I've gone from trepidation about servicing my outboard, to actually getting excited about it! Thank you for this clearly explained, clearly shot video!
Thank you!! Followed your video and got my 2hp running perfectly again after sitting for 6 years! I was told by the mechanics that it would be an expensive job and requires a new carburetor. You saved me a bundle!!
I just did my carb, took maybe an hour with setup plus I soaked the main jet (totally clogged) and emulsion tube in carb cleaner for 20 mintues. I cleaned the fuel tank and once all back together it started the first pull. I did notice that it backfires occasionally when going from full throttle to slow quickly.. can't wait to try it out on the water.
Without question, this was the best instructional video (on ANYTHING) that I've ever seen. And believe me, I've watched thousands. I subbed. I don't know what else you posted, but that was great and I'll follow you. Great job..
👏👏👏 2.3 motor honda tamirciye götürdüm karbüratörün değişmesi gerektiğini söyledi yaptı ama rölantide duruyor Bu videoyu buldum izledim yarın sökeceğim cok iyi paylaşım 👍
I just did mine today just bought it yesterday but didnt know there was or take out that emulsion tube starts first pull so in order not to fight with those 2 gaskets again ill just leave it. You don't need a barrel to run it but it would be a lot quiter that way.
First of thanks for your video but had a question for you. I recently bought one of these and was told it’s air cooled and didn’t need to be in water to run.
Dude thanks so much, it worked!!! Im so proud of myself lol. Have a small issue tho, the engine wont run when in neutral gear, only if i gas it runs, any clue?
You are the mechanic now! Check if there is a neutral safety switch attached somewhere to the lever on the inside of the case. Maybe it needs to be serviced or replaced or adjusted.
you should also tell that customer to change out the ANODS on the lower unit ! they already look like they are in bad shape from the salt environment .. The “ Anods “ help keep the corrosion in once place instead of eating away at the engine of lower unit ... a lot of the bigger engine have them internal and external like this engine does .. another thing is you should use Marine grade lower end oil , they come with anti corrosion additives .. that lower end hasn't been change ever judging how black it is lol .. you want to change your lower end unit every season or if your in the warmer climate ever six months .. if you do the oil will still be clean . even if its clean its good practice to change it ! there is a lot of Science behind it ... feel free to look it up if you want to .. they sell a lower end unit pump for like 7$ because they want you to fill from the bottom up .. Sorry for so many comments lol Not trying to act like a MR know it all just trying to be helpful on this platform .. Cheers everyone !
Very helpful video. Can you tell me what year that motor is? It looks exactly like the used one I bought, and I am having trouble determining the year for ordering parts.
@@machinesnmetal I didn’t remove mine, wasn’t sure how to without damaging the carb- it had limiters cast into the carb, the screw would only turn about 1/3 of a turn each way and then it would hit the stops on the carb
Because there's too many know it alls on UA-cam and I didn't feel like moderating dozens of stupid comments about burning the impeller out running it out of the water 💦 😂.
another helpful tip IF you have a big gas tank that you can’t take out or its just a bitch to do ,, DO this ! Drain the tank go out and BUY some SHOP paper Rags from SCOTTS its what I use .. next though a bunch of them them in the tank and Grab you air gun with a long tip and stick it in the tank at a angle or until you can get the rags flowing in a tornado affect this does a hell of a Job on cleaning out any tank ! .. then to remove the rags just use a mechanic grab tool with the claws that spring out you can pick those up cheap cheap from any parts store .. this trick is like having your own little Smurfs helpers whipping your fuel tank clean clean lol ... Hope this was helpful to someone !
Surprised you didn't change or at least check the spark plug. The idle jet on these are the smallest little needles ever and plug up pretty easily causing issues off idle just as the clutch engages. You need to use a small torch to get the EPA cap off before removing it to clean and adjust. The powers that be don't want us common serfs adjusting this jet but they do gum up if you leave old alcohol-content gas in them. Avoid fuel with any alcohol content if you can find it in your area. There are a few videos here that show the process of removing this EPA cap without the tiny screwhead autoself-destructing which it is designed to do when "tempered with." The bowls on these rust something terrible and the bottom needle drain seizes up. The cost of a new bowl is a sizeable fraction of what a whole new carburetor goes for new. Aftermarket carbs are a little cheaper than genuine Honda units that run about $90, and dispense with the fancy needle drain and use a simple threaded bolt plug instead . I wish I could just buy the aftermarket bowl for $10, but ai have seen whole aftermarket carbs on ebay for what Honda charges for just the bowl.
You can get carb bowls for free off of GC lawnmower engines it's the same one. Your mower shop will have a hundred of them in a milk crate in their used parts room.
Good to know, but it seems the GC carburetor bowls don't have drains. The drain comes in very handy out in the field if water gets in the tank. It'll get you home with just a quick flush to clear the bowl. We live full-time on our sailboat and this motor the our dinghy make up our "family car." We have learned to close the vent and the petcock every time we shut it off to keep rainwater from running right in. Even when the vent is off there is a little water sitting in the cap waiting to run in the moment the vent is opened. We blow it out with a puff of air if there has been a recent rain. Many crowded marina dinghy docks have "motor down" policies to protect inflatables from prop damage The gas cap on the newer 2.3hp versions with the charcoal filter inside them really are a terrible design. I wonder if gas caps from other honda engines fit on these outboards?

This has been a definitive video on how to service the 2hp 4 stroke Honda outboard motor. Thank you for the good demonstration of "how-to."
You! Are the mechanic now.

Fantastic video, it really helped me out! No waffling just good practical help, brilliant!
Glad it helped!
Great video. I was thinking, "there's no way I have wire small enough to clean the jet".... and then you suggest bike brake cable! Awesome. Thank you!
I find that the bicycle brake wire seems to work best for all carburetor jets I deal with
Very clear video. Thank you. Our engine is now running again! 😁
Glad it helped

Guys spend lots of money on their BMW's to make them backfire when they throttle down, consider yourself lucky 😅
Great Video, so practical and helped me so much with my service. Thank you from Australia

Really excellent video ! Given me the confidence to have a go at the carb on my BF2 A ( constantly flooding) .. many thanks 😊👍
Great informative and sensible video, thank you for sharing your knowledge.
My pleasure!
I bought a 2hp from 1998 and The motor runs great
Thanks mate! Our engine was out of use 6 years and with this video we got it running!

Great video. Excellent camera work too. Thank you for sharing. 👍 😊
Great video. Thorough and to the point.
Thank you, best explanation I have found!

Muchas gracias por este gran video. Perfecto para un novato como yo.

That's correct on the air cooled . I just run it in water just to be sure

Customer didn't want to spend any money, he only wanted the carb cleaned, nothing else. I did the other stuff on my time for the viewers sake.

I'm not sure the year it is long gone sorry.
nice video best I could find thanks Ray UK
Question
You clean or check fuel hosecas sometimes with modern fuels it bulges or breaksdown the inner wall on the hose ?
Good clear video..
Great video! Thanks.. what about the idle mixture screw? Do you remove it and clean it?
I would.
@@machinesnmetal I didn’t remove mine, wasn’t sure how to without damaging the carb- it had limiters cast into the carb, the screw would only turn about 1/3 of a turn each way and then it would hit the stops on the carb
Great vid ,thanks, helped allot
Maybe a dumb question, but why did you put it in water to test it, if it is air cooled?
Because there's too many know it alls on UA-cam and I didn't feel like moderating dozens of stupid comments about burning the impeller out running it out of the water 💦 😂.
@@machinesnmetal Also most air cooled recommend it so seals dont overheat in prop gear box!
Cool videos
👊
Great video will try and get it going tomorrow thanks.
Good luck!
Thank you very much for making this video!! Q: Isn't this an air-cooled motor? If so do you need to run it in water?
Air-cooled. But need load on it to know you've done the carb correctly
@machinesnmetal Ah, Good stuff. Thanks!
supposed to fill foot from bottom hole to avoid air bubble

How do you increase the idle speed? I have the 2.3 hp model, almost new but it idles far too slowly and stalls.
There should be a little screw on the carburetor that presses on the throttle arm. That or tighten the throttle cable a little bit
@@machinesnmetal thanks. I found it.
Is there no in-line gas filter on these?
Shit, ive run mine not in water, is that problematic?
Thought air cool wasn't necessary
short periods are ok , but dont run super long without water
I have this same engine. Did the carb clean but cuts out at higher rpm's. Any idea what could cause this?
Does not cut out if you leave the choke on slightly at higher rpm?
Hi again. Does this have a fuel filter I need to clean out?
If I remember, it has a strainer in the end of the hose that pushes onto the barb on the fuel tank.
@@machinesnmetal Thank you! I'll take a look.
Since it's air cooled does it have to be in water to run it?
No, but being in water when you run it simulates more of a real life situation, so you can see if it runs properly under a load.
I cleaned the carb and tank, runs for a second with starter fluid but doesn’t run on its own. Has to be fuel supply, but at a loss. Any suggestions?
The fuel turned on?
Turned out the fuel line was partially clogged.
great thanks
Can you fill it from the top? Why does everyone fill it from the top?
Air bubbles will mess up the fill. Alot easier from the bottom
Surprised you didn't change or at least check the spark plug.

what type of motor oil did you put in?
Straight 30
how do you replace the carburetor

Rusty parts on a honda outboard- not like any honda I have owed. I suspect this is a chinese version not made to normal honda standards.
