As an American spurs fan, I chose them because they are just straight up fun. I love the players, the kit, the chants, the way they play, etc. Being outside of England you hear some banter, but not to the point where I imagine it'd be living in London so from that perspective I don't mind it. Admitedly there's also a bit of a masochistic side of me that doesn't want to just pick the easiest route (ie City, Liverpool, or even other dominant clubs outside of England) and would rather support the underdog with the hope that one day they will win something (which even if it takes another 16 years I do genuinely think it will happen and I already know the mental high will be incredible). As a spurs fan, I think the main thing is that Ange's system requires every player to give 100%. This means that for games against tougher opposition, we play so well because they're giving everything, and in other cases (E.g. West Ham, Brentford) we only played better once they scored first, to try to overcome it. When it comes to teams like Palace or Ipswich, there's a hint of complacency, thinking that we'll win anyway even when they've scored, thus making us wake up far too late to make much of a difference within the game.

Maybe the Spurs thing is coming from the point of view of bandwagoning and people starting to support teams not in their area cus of their top club status.
I think what he's trying to say in that regard, "if you're after success and glory why did you choose Spurs?"
Now while I don't support Spurs they are prolly my favorite club out of the top 6 out of a neutral perspective because of their style of play during the poch era and their somewhat easy likeablity and one of bffs is a spurs fan.
The whole concept of the top 6 clubs comes from their success and performance in league tables overall, but compared to the others the outlier here is the lack off success to show for their reputation as opposed to their compatriots.

I’ve been asked by a lot of my Family and friends (of which support West ham and Palace) why I support Tottenham, I believe you sort of just know/ find out once you go, it can’t really be forced.
Luckily my Dad was a Tottenham fan and I was so soo lucky I was born and got to experience the early 2000s.
I new 100% that I was at the right place when I went to Defoe’s last game for my Birthday (which was a 2 - 1 win against palace with also Defoe scoring) and it was amazing the way everyone connected over one thing making you feel at home just has the most unforgettable feeling.
I did fall a little out of Football during our stay at Wembley, but when the stadium was finished we decided to go back up there, went on the tour during the first week of it’s release, with also Tickets to the Pre season match against Inter Milan.
I’ll say I’ll never forget the Pre season match, it was amazing the Football was alright that day but the Fans and the atmosphere I’ll never forget.
I was lucky enough to go to the Kane Homecoming match this pre season and it was just as amazing as it’s always been, especially the way we gave respect to Kane for his service and loyalty to the club.
Just making me realise I chose the right club to stick by, even if the road ain’t always perfect.

It was the same at Celtic, always did well against teams that gave us a good go, but the hardest games to watch for us were always against the lowest ranked sides because they would just have 11 men in the box, it works well when the team you are playing against tries to actually play football but its shaky when they dont.

So as someone not born in England, I think spurs being the club I support was a good choice, like they are definitely good, but not good enough to just win trophies. So when they finally take that next step and get over the line I think it’ll be pretty satisfying.
Also am I the only one that thinks Tottenham could’ve won stuff with poch if he actually got money? I mean the team they assembled from 2015-2019 was really good, but they never had enough depth since the new stadium was being constructed. Like it was the same story about not having enough int he transfer budget to get some more depth.
Being able to challenge for the prem title twice and get to the Ucl final should’ve been the sign that this team could actually win things if they maybe have some super sub if they needed some goal when they were struggling.
Idk I just think they actually could’ve won a lot had Poch actually had money to spend.

I grew up going to White Hart Lane a lot. I grew up in the late 2000s and early 2010s. I've watched players like Bale, Modric, De Foe, Kane, Son, and so on. Honestly, I probably say I wouldn't be a Spurs fan if it wasn't in the family.
The joy and misery of supporting them is what makes the experience feel more real. And it's our history that made me fall in love with Spurs. We've had legends like Greaves, Mackay, Nicholson, Ardiles, Hazard, and so on.
Watching the 100 Years of Spurs documentary probably helped, too. Whenever I put on that lilywhite jersey, I always do so with a smile. Don't know what the next game will bring, but I'll be there for Spurs no matter what. Through thick or thin.

Spurs fan from the US: I wasn’t able to watch footy until I was about 10-12 and when I finally was able to, the first game I watched was a Spurs game that Bale absolutely dominated. So I started watching them for him, but after he left I just kept watching them week in and week out and they ended up with the squad of Eriksen, Kane, Son, Dele under Poch and I fell in love with them. The colors, the stadium(s), the “classy” font, idk, something just felt right.
I’ve thought about like becoming a neutral, since I’m an American who doesn’t really have a local MLS team, just to see if I could find a new team eventually, but I couldn’t stop following Spurs. They always FEEL like they can win something because they’re always good enough to make you believe, and that’s what’s exciting because the day they do win something the joy all the fans are going to get is going to be absolutely mental. Spurs just feel like my team, and I truly believe I’ll always feel that way.

I think spurs are the most misunderstood team in the league. Tottenham are definitly not a counter-attacking team. They are an ambitious team that use a constant attack mentality as a way to bring the team together. The players they use are to really exagerrate the style. The are still getiting better every game, still building, and i believe when you watch full games, you see the philosophy and how unique Ange has made this team. Also it brings a sense if belief too if anything, that anything can happen if they pushing, ie shieffeld united last season, mancity draw last season, first burnely game last season, first chelsea game last season. The proof becomes apparent.

Spurs just feel like the perfect underdog team from someone on the outside (who isn’t from Europe), there’s a tragic angle to it and there’s always real potential which makes it more exciting (and more painful).
I used to really only watch international competitions and UCL big games, so when I started watching PL games I watched different matches from all the teams and I just liked something about the Spurs story, like they were a real protagonist in the merciless world of football. The other big teams felt wrong, like can you really celebrate a man city trophy if you were able to “choose” that team? Obviously yes, but you get what I mean. The other teams kind of blur together to casuals if you’re not English.
Ironically I was rooting for Liverpool when Spurs were in that UCL final. Everyone from my part of the world wanted Salah to lift it, and I thought “oh those other guys have Harry Kane and Lloris and Dele freaking Alli, surely they win all the time”. lol

Seems a bit weird to specifically criticise Spurs for not winning trophies when 95% of the other teams in England have also won very little recently. At least Spurs aren’t monotonous and boring. So to answer you question as to “why”: You can either jump on the glory hunting bandwagon and support one of the obvious teams because you’re a weak willed sheep. Or you could support one of the other teams who don’t win much and be bored by how consistently mid they are and how they play to scrape wins. Or you could support Spurs and ride a batsht mental rollercoaster every weekend where you’re guaranteed brave/stupid football, goals in either end, and endless bipolar drama.
The question shouldn’t be why. The question should be why not.
(there’s also another obvious reason: because local club/family ties, so asking why is just silly anyway).

    You aint wrong
I support my club because I didnt wanna be a bandwagon fan when i began watching in 2017/2018
As a Boston sports fan I have been spoiled in glory across the numerous sports teams we have, Patriots primarily- not great now but amazing as a kid back then
Poch and plyers like Eriksen and Dembele made this team stand out, when it came time to pick my club for this new sport I wanted to follow
Almost chose Brighton, almost chose City- I was verrrry close to city but heard they were the reigning champions and did not wanna pick them
Then one day I caught a game of West ham vs Spurs and Tottenham just had this magical pull to me- I understood the flow of the game and the tactical understanding of our identity
Pochettino instilled it- to a nonfollower like me, I learned about our history, the founding, the ups and downs, the heartbreaks
But i still wouldn’t change it for any other club as insane as they drive me, Levy Out would be our greatest advancement if anything but until the we have to be masochists and support the club and the players for what I hope is the last painful rebuild and stick to a manager and break the cycle of inconsistency

I love being a Spurs fan, it has destroyed my life. We have an underdog flare that makes us hope and pray we can pull off what others have deemed impossible for us and I think the anticipation of something greater has brought us to this club. Do we experience confusion and suffering often? Absolutely. But the joy we feel when we win something with all odds against us is just so immeasurable I just couldn't see myself with another club. It's insanity but I love it. I hope we get a trophy one day because it does suck being made fun of all the time and I hate it.

The biggest difference I would say compared to before is their Goal difference is standing out big now, they surely can't be far away from a run of some sorts, Ange has them playing alot different with their attacking first style, their main weakness is obviously against the lower quality sides and leaving open gaping holes for the counter attack and really it's the only thing they need to solve to transform the team at this point.
It's very similar to early Kloop at Liverpool I would say.

my dad was born in the almost center of england (chesterfield a 20 min drive south of Sheffield ) growing up in the late 80s early 90s there was united and liverpool dominating for a long time. My dad in all his wisdom chose to put the rest of his bloodline in purgatory. he loved to watch gazza as a kid and names him the reason he and in extension i support spurs. (we still follow chesterfield and go to games, support your local) We can beat anyone but we can and will loose to everyone. its been better to watch anges style than jose or conte but sometimes it feels like watching england in the euros. passing around the box with little direction, putting a risky ball though to no one and being on the counter. Theres been quite a few injuries this year (were playing a welsh full back and a 22 year old Romanian as the centre backs)

Leaving aside Newcastle and the gooners, which were two games they didn't really deserve to lose, and you may notice a pattern in the other 3 defeats they've had this season.
They all came after Europa League games on the Thursday night, whereas 5 of their 6 of their wins didn't, the exception being a 0-3 win at Man U, who are also playing in the Europa.
So Spurs play Roma this Thursday night, followed by Fulham on Sunday. Lets see if they struggle to overcome a team who just got battered by Wolves at home.

Spurs fans support spurs not because of titles, but because of family ties or usually location, both are my reasons. In terms of fans, i think we're the most hungry in terms of titles but also one of the most genuine football clubs for fans, no glory hunter will support spurs unless you were born in the 60's, 70's or 80's. Every top 6 side bar spurs bought their titles. We have never spent money like we are now, and even then, the money we have spent under ange, 50-60% of the players are prospects and depth. I think the timer is ticking down, i think the trophy drought will end sooner rather than later, may not even be this season, but it feels like we are going in the right direction.

Watching our games What I've seen is that the way to beat Tottenham Hotspur is to sit back park an air bus and wait for an opening and hurt them, like Arsenal and many more.

This exact stretch of games has made me tap out of club football almost completely. I can’t stand the inconsistency. How can I expect Spurs to rise to the occasion and win a trophy when they can’t beat Ipswich at home? Last year I felt amazing after the Villa game, then felt like garbage when they lost to Fulham. The Brighton away game that was embarrassing, Ange is in his second season and the new Brighton manager is in his first year with the club, that advantage should have been felt. Palace away and Ipswich at home were so infuriating. If they make it to a final, I will watch otherwise I’m staying out of it.

Spurs fan here, and while you did get some of the problems at the club, you missed out on some big points. Problem 1: we signed loads of young players. Although these lads will probably win trophies in the next few years(whether its with us or someone else), right now the wonderkids that weve signed are struggling to make a noticeable impact on our results. The one player that weve signed that isnt a wonderkid, dominic solanke, is having a huge impact right now which shows how much we still need to do in the transfer market. Which brings me to the second problem: lack of leadership. As much as i love sonny, he isnt a leader. Hugo lloris, harry kane, even hojbjerg, are leaders, but nobody in our squad has that kind of leadership mentality where they feel the obligation to set the bar high every game, no matter the opposition or the form theyre in. It has a huge impact that you can see in games like ipswich where nobody seemed to want to win.
Once we do fix these problems though im willing to bet my life savings ange will end our trophy drought.

Yes It blows watching an unrecognizable team lose to Ipswich, but every time they come back to tie or win in the final minutes of a match (like, all the time) then it makes it worth the heart palpitations. It’s that explosion of emotion and unpredictability that makes this game so entertaining imo. I’d almost rather watch a game on the edge of my seat waiting for a comeback than one where they dominate.
Unless of course, it’s City 😏

It’s not that confusing. Styles make fights. They counter City’s possession style, but are bad against Chelsea, and then teams that play low blocks.
Their way of playing football doesn’t work against most defensively sound teams that don’t play forward as much and rely on counters.

  • @meatmog

I support Spurs because they are my local club. The game of football started before the Premier League. Successes are cyclical for instance when Spurs won the double, Liverpool were recovering from relegation. Spurs were robbed in the European Cup against Benfica. That squad should have won the cup that season. John White being killed on the golf course in 64 effectively ended their dominance in that era. I do believe they would have won the trophy in 65. Spurs were a big reason why British clubs became more confident in European Cup Competitions against horrendously biased refs. This was caused by the fact that British clubs didn't take the European Cup seriously in the earlier days with clubs sometimes electing not to compete. It makes the achievements of Spurs Manchester and Liverpool over the next 15 years so remarkable. Remember too that Graham Souness was a youth player at Spurs at the time wasn't good enough to get into the squad ...No way he could replace Dave McKay but what he learned there was invaluable for his future career.
Spurs are my club and I have watched football for the best part of 60 years. I resent the tags we get by hack pundits who's appreciations of the game are based on post Premier League narratives. The game now needs to change its name to Moneyball because it has lost its soul a bit like my club. Spurs were the first football Plc and Keith Burkenshaw said 40years ago "there used to be a Football Club here"...he was right.

Don’t agree with the point about Brennan and Dom Solanke. Cherries played very modern football in which Dom excelled, proving to be pressing and goal scoring machine, he plays great for Tottenham. As for Brennan - Ange likes to use fast wingers that do the low cross or arrive late to the box and finish. Johnson is exactly this type of player. The whole point is lazy to be honest.
Look at Klopp’s Liverpool, they’ve bought Mane and Van Dijk from Southampton, Robbo from relegated Hull and Salah from mediocre Roma. All of those became the best in their positions.

for my eye, there's two major things Spurs need
    1. depth, I'm Australian, I know what Ange is like from his time with our NT, and you need players to rotate through, they will get tired, they will need time, especially over an entire season, it's exhausting, their depth rn, let's be real, is shit, they have a first 11 that could win the league, it's that strong
but unlike the teams that do win the league, that's where it stops, how many players from their next 8 could win a league? cause if the answer is less than 5, they won't, and that answer is what? 1, 2 if we're generous, so a few injuries, especially to key areas in the spine, as shown especially with VDV, they're in trouble, and it's not a unique to Spurs issues, it happened to Arsenal when they were building under Arteta, Liverpool under Klopp, Spurs is in that same bracket, a good team, but without the boundless wealth of City, United, Chelsea, so it takes time to build the team, but moreso the depth
    but the second issue
    2. they don't have that one player who can just go "goal somewhere" and just turn those draws into wins, losses into draws, now don't get me wrong, these players aren't easy to find, they did have one for a long time in Harry Kane, but they just need to find another one, whether they try to find an unearthed talent in their academy, or maybe an even riskier play of trying to pull a young player out the Championship, cause I doubt they'll be able to sign a proven made player like this cause they're the ones with the biggest pricetags, so to try to get one it will be an incredibly risky move if they do, but if it came off it'd work wonders
overall, I don't think Spurs fans need to be worried, but I do understand their frustration, if Ange can even get an EFL Cup this season it'd do wonders to keep morals up in fans, so if we do get to pointier ends of the season, maybe throw everything at the Cups if that's the only way silverware will come, but outside that, I think, like Arsenal with Arteta, just time is needed

  • @thelinedrive

Tottenham are basically at the phase of the project where they got to get the talent to get the system to be second nature. Johnson is basically the poster of the process here.
These are the growing pains you go through before you take that next step with a system. Firmly believe they win the EFL Cup and Euro League with how they are progressing.
