Unfortunately the other driver died.😢 "The driver was at home on Saturday (29 June), four days after the accident, and became unwell. Whether his death was related to the accident is currently being investigated. The body has been secured for examination," the police officer points out.
He was driving the speed limit on an open two way road? Was doing nothing illegal at all. It was an accident. But yes it’s unfortunate the man passed recently and I’m sure the autopsy will explain why. May he rest in peace.
If anyone else is curious (like I was) I looked up what the speed limit for crews doing recce was. "The maximum speed allowed during Reconnaissance is 80kmh on special stages unless a lower speed limit is indicated by road signs or by written instructions in the roadbook" At all other times "Competitors must fully respect the Polish Traffic Law regulations including use seatbelts and speed limits" Which are 50kmh in build up areas, and 90kmph outside of build up areas.
80-90kph is still a lot, for a tight road like this, unpaved, driving head-on with a regular family car. I believe they didn't have to follow the lower limit of 50 there, since the accident took place far from any houses one could consider a build-up area.
Yeah, they obey the speed limits ofc but that doesn't mean driving that speed would be safe for every corner and blind crest, and the drivers always want to get the best understanding of how the road will look at race speed as legally possible. Not to mention sometimes stopping on the road to check notes and accelerating and concentrating on things to add to pacenotes while trying to look at the traffic at same time. Such a sad accident :(

Because they're using the road at safe and legal speeds during recce. It's already logistically challenging to close roads for the rally, closing it for what is essentially just casual traffic adds stress to both organizers and local residents.

Not to be funny but I've seen some "recce" runs where they were nowhere near 49kmh (30mph). It would be interesting to know if they were "well under" the speed limit, under the recce limit and for how long before impact. On the other hand there are car crashes all the time where speed isn't a factor so it could just as easily be someone pulling out without looking.
@@qoorsix And the speed limit in Poland for public roads outside cities is 70 km/h, 50 in cities and villages. Unless they closed the road (which I assume they didn't as the other driver was there), then the legal limits should apply.
