My one and only personal interaction with Greenpeace took place in the midst of one of their demonstrations in Vancouver when they blocked traffic (the Lion's Gate Bridge during rush hour if memory serves).
When it was pointed out that creating a monstrous traffic jam only caused more wasted fuel, the "leaders" of the group started hurling insults and choice words at bystanders and innocent passers-by.
My one-time sympathy for their cause vanished.

Good point. There is a psychological principle called primacy. The first information one gets on a subject is considered true, and it takes a lot of convincing to reverse a person’s belief system. That is why it is so important to teach our children to listen to many aspects of an argument before coming to any conclusions. Also, REQUIRE FACTS before believing anybody’s argument.

In all of my four decades as a biologist, you are the first person I have seen who described your environmentalism so honestly. Thank you! It has been incredibly frustrating so many times as I work to heal and improve the land and water only to come up against activists who have no grasp of ecology. In particular in western North America our forests suffer from political meddling to the point of causing huge wildfires, not because of climate, but because of legal hurdles to managing the ecology of the forests to avoid these fires. I am not sure if this will help, but many current activists may listen to your history more closely because they align with the way you were thinking. It is so difficult to use actual science to persuade because I am not in the activists' clique. I hope you will spread your message!

As soon as any organization of any kind gets too large or too powerful, it becomes vertical in nature. That is, power becomes concentrated at the top. Which in turn disproportionately attracts psychopaths and various other flavors of the power-lusters. Always with the same result: too much power in the wrong hands. This is the structure of the road to destruction, from the organizational point of view.

"One basic truth can be used as a foundation for a mountain of lies, and if we dig down deep enough in the mountain of lies, and bring out that truth, to set it on top of the mountain of lies; the entire mountain of lies will crumble under the weight of that one truth, and there is nothing more devastating to a structure of lies than the revelation of the truth upon which the structure of lies was built, because the shock waves of the revelation of the truth reverberate, and continue to reverberate throughout the Earth for generations to follow, awakening even those people who had no desire to be awakened to the truth." - Delamer Duverus : Behold A Pale Horse by Bill Cooper. HL Menken : "Men become civilized, not in proportion to their willingness to believe, but in their readiness to doubt. The more stupid the man, the larger his stock of adamantine assurances, the heavier his load of faith. What is a lie? It is something that man says to his neighbor who has cut a truth in him that he wished to remain hidden. A lie, in the preponderance of instances, is a truth, perverted out of recognition. What, then, of truth? Truth lies in our belief in it, not in our denial of it. Truth, to be truth, must be alive. The truth that is only thought is dead. It must be incarnate. In this lies the true value of the lie. It is a way of testing the truths of others by putting them in terms that we can understand. The final lie of all is the one that substitutes one lie for another. This is the most common of all lies. Truth is replaced, not by another truth, but by another lie."

I resonate with this deeply. For years I flirted right along the dark shadow of this anti-human impulse myself. I've spent much time in the natural wildernesses of the world (a great privilege I remain grateful for) and have often felt the tension between imperfect human development and the dire impacts it has on those places we value deepest in our hearts.
But then I started encountering those 'deep greens' whose choice was to put the planet ahead of humanity. Morally I could see no difference between them and the great mass murdering monsters of history. Our pathway must be to continue to progress and refine our scientific and industrial societies in order they may fully flourish and allow us to become true stewards of this blue marble planet.

I actually stump them with the nuclear winter theory because it is two sides of the same coin. Do you believe in nuclear winter and why? So has thousands of nuclear tests slowed global warming? So does that mean that in only 80 years time you believe that the US gained the ability to heat and freeze the entire planet at the same time?
The nuclear winter theory was cooked up during the Cold War by Carl Sagan to secure more funding for NASA. Proving that scientists lie, and will lie for money. Even their favorite ones.

I can fully confirm that anti-human change in gp and other organizations inthe early 80ies.
Met Dave McTaggert, Paul Watson and a few others back in the days.
And yep, the was a lot of influx from the political left, maoists and a bunch of other weirdos these days. Not to mention the infights.
This change came with a massive drop in the longterm efficiency of their campaigns in the early eighties. It went downhill from there.
A friend of mine managed a greenpeace campaign to shut down a chemical factory. And they suceeded. The operation was shut down, the municipality was left with a highly contaminated area and operations continued in Latin America, causing worse pollution than ever before.
Antiwhaling and seal protection campaigns were a great fundraiser.
At least, campaigns against unregulated whaling made sense at the time.
But behind the scenes, it was a dirty, dishonest game. Russian antarctic whaling did not stop because of protests, but because their fleet was falling to pieces. Rust saved countless whales. And there were plenty of threats to end whaling by terrorist attacks. One guy (John Gordon Davis) even wrote a terrible fiction book about a large scale terrorist operation and just when you think that this was a bit far-fetched, in 1981, some guy in Florida was arrested with weapons, dynamite, a submarine (!) and detailled data on the Russian whaling fleet. Somebody had put money into the idea. Never to be heard from again.
And as to unregulated whaling, the socalled pirate whalers were a lame duck by the late 70ies already. Unknown radicals actually put an end to an iconic whaler named „Sierra“ in Lisbon. By means of limpet mines.
And that broke the back on the illegal whaling ops. All the campaigns since were largely counterproductive.
Like japanese antarctic whaling. Some experts say that the Japanese would long since have quit whaling ops if it where not for the environmentalist they did not want to loose face with.
And yes, I agree. However, the Japanese could not escape their cultural patterns in the confrontation with Greenpeace and Sea shepherd.
The campaigns were fueled by epic pictures of „good, heroic, daring environmentalists“ in their tiny runber boats against „cruel, dark hunters“ in their rusty grey ships. A strong visual narrative.
Had the Japanese painted their ships in bright colours with rainbows and doves and other symbols: the campaigns would have ended immediatly. You can not campaign with pics that need explanations. 🤷🏼‍♂️
There were some cool daredevil campaigns in those days like stopping French nuclear testing in the Pacific.
But the more they turned from pro peace to anti everything, the worse it got. Cut all ties with Greenpeace and their likes in the early 90ies.

We promote the concept of creating small lakes on private land as refugia for sensitive species of fish with an emphasis on salmon and trout. We are also working on designs for recirculating streams that can be used as "hatcheries" in order to produce fish that are identical to our threatened and endangered wild salmon and trout.
