    The way Home Free has progressed over the years has shown all of us who they really are. As much as the judges praised Tim and Austin, they still went on to give the lead vocal to whoever sounded the best singing it. And still not an ego in sight. One of the reasons i love these guys so much. They feel like family.

    “I Want Crazy” was my favorite Home Free performance.
    It’s still my favorite of the three versions: Austin lead from Sing Off, Tim’s lead off in the Hunter Hayes medley, and Rob leading in the one from this year.

    Home Free, as winners of the Sing-Off, were invited back the year after they won and sang with the judges! Ben Folds was not there then, but he had a replacement. They sang “Stand By Me”.

      Um, what? This was the 4th and last season of the Sing-Off. Unless there was a special or something? Or maybe you're thinking of the Sing-Off traveling show that came after?

    • @brendasorenson6186
      @brendasorenson6186 7 місяців тому +4

      @glowormrdr6183 Yes, there was a so-called fifth season that consisted of one two-hour episode. We can split hairs whether or not that consisted of a season or a special, but, regardless, HF did perform on it, with the judges showboating. I do not understand NBC's logic.

    • @patriciamcl54
      @patriciamcl54 7 місяців тому +1

      @@brendasorenson6186 The logic of not running a 5th season was simply that audiences had fallen so it was no longer economic to put on ahorrifically expensive show. I suspect the "special" was to fulfil contractual obligations.

    Keep in mind the other groups had a LOT of choreography. A lot of energy. Some of the costumes were VERY brightly colored and there were a lot of gold sequins.
    Home Free wore dark colors and suit. And they did a lot of sitting.
    The judges comments were in the context of the other groups Home Free was competing against. Vocal Rush was 12 high schoolers with a lot of energy.

    It was shameful that not one word from the judges acknowledged Chris's presence. But they didn't know he was the founder of the group, and that his arrangements were stellar. I still miss that "Chris touch" -- he is so good at it, and has a really fine voice, too. And so far as "star quality" goes, I'm sure Jewel was seeing lots of visual glamour and/or theatricality from all the other groups that we aren't seeing in these HF clips. She, herself, had congratulated them for being themselves! Keep going, J. and J., there's more yet to come.

      A show like the Sing Off had so many contestants in the other groups that they did what is always done to focus audience attention, they told the groups to nominate two members to be featured in the intro production numbers and in the songs. The band agreed with the producer that they would choose Tim, as the only basso profundo in the show, and Austin, who beside the looks and the voice had extensive experience of production numbers. Are you suggesting that the show should have given every single member of every group (in total must have been over a hundred) a special mention? Saying it was "shameful" is going much too far. There were dozens of other contestants who were not mentioned by name, so I'm not sure why people think the judges had a special responsibility to mention Chris.

  • @beadwright
    @beadwright 7 місяців тому +6

    The judges did compliment the arrangements, just not acknowledging Chris by name. He did get to speak in the intro video and said that he and his brother were the founders and the three other guys were later additions. But Chris was the one who wanted the sing-off competition so much!

    Ah, you've discovered Tim's "bass hand". He uses it a lot, and you can tell if he's going up like in "My Maria" or down like in "Ring of Fire". There have also been times in their live shows that Adam will point to Tim, then point to the ground and you know there's about to be an earthquake!

    They were not mostly country before the sing off. They just had a handful of country songs that they did. The rest were pop, some 50s, some r and b! Just a large variety of songs but the producers of the show asked them about doing country and when they had a few to pull out of their pocket the producers told them they would have a better chance of winning with country. I did think this was one of the best that they did. They had been working on it while they were on tour before sing off. Great job guys! Love you comments! Low bass Kenneth

    I love how protective Jillian is of HF lol. You have to remember though that this was at the beginning, before all of it blew up and when they were still just touring on their own. Tim had only been with them for about a year and a half and Austin maybe a year or less. The producers of the Sing Off noticed something and asked them if they would continue in the show as a country acapella band since there were none. According to Tim they were divided at first. Chris said he would do anything. Austin was all for it. Adam didn’t want to because he didn’t want to do country. And Tim had just done a solo country album right before he joined HF that he put his blood seat and tears into and it didn’t take off so he was less than thrilled to do country again. I think maybe it was Rob that was neutral but in the end they decided to go for it….and the rest is history of course.
    Since they weren’t famous yet I think the judges are really there to not only critique but since they were/are famous they feel like these groups need their input. Which if you think about it they do. The guys all say it was helpful to them. Of course I’m sure it helps the judges stroke their ego a bit too😉.
    As far as you guys thinking Rob wasn’t getting enough chances to sing…just think for a minute. Chris with Adam of course was the founder of the group. They persevered for years before the other guys came along but both of them were willing to take a step back and do what was best for the group. Rob, as wonderfully talented as he was and is was willing to do the same thing.
    He did get to shine a little but as far as their decision on who would do the do more of the singing I really think that had to do with the fact that only Austin and Tim at that time were from the south. They had the accents and they knew the country songs. This being new territory at the time for them I think the Minnesota guys..Chris, Adam and Rob were happy to let the southern boys take the reins a little.
    I know it wasn’t Tim or Austin being divas as they have both talked about how the judges asked for so much from Austin that he almost lost his voice and was exhausted. They wanted a lot from Tim too but his low Timblivion notes were a little fear and further between Austin’s parts lol.
    The important thing is that it opened up the door for them and it was at least a beginning to getting them more exposure.
    They left the label and the Sing Off touring behind to handle all their stuff themselves of course which I believe was a good move but still that Sing Off experience was good for them at the time.

      @jadaskye 7 місяців тому +1

      I think in the Home Free History series that Chris produced Tim said that he and Rob weren't that keen on doing the show, Chris and Austin were all for it and the deciding vote was Adam. Thank goodness for Adam.

    • @nemaheptinstall2896
      @nemaheptinstall2896 7 місяців тому

      That’s probably correct also @jadaskye. I was talking specifically about the decision to “change” to a country acapella group of course which I know several of the guys have recounted. I believe Tim has even admitted it was so long ago that they don’t remember all the details.
      They had tried out before as a lot of Home Fries know of course I think twice with another line up of singers in the group and had never made it that far. This was their first try with Austin and Tim added to HF. It seemed like they just finally got the perfect blend of voices that just sounded so great together.

    • @nemaheptinstall2896
      @nemaheptinstall2896 7 місяців тому

    Home Free did not go into the show as a country group, but for the audition showcased a couple of songs that came off country. The show pushed Home Free into the country box by guaranteeing them a place on the show. Tim and particularly Austin actually sound country being from the south, while the other three are from Minnesota. I always felt that was why they wanted to focus on their voices. Great reaction and comments Jillian & Jeremy! I watched The Sing-Off at the time and called #HomeFree as the winner from the first episode - they were head and shoulders above the others IMHO, and so have been on this journey for 10 years. They have grown and come into "their own" and once they went independent you could really see them break out of the "mold/lane" that the producers were wanting to keep them in. As others have said, the show wanted to focus on only a couple of "leads" per group, which left Rob and Chris on the peripheral during the show, with Adam getting the occasional comment for his beatboxing. We have grown to love all members of HF and love how they really do love to share the lead among the group members. We KNOW how much Rob and Chris and now Chance truly contributed to the group and love them for it. Looking forward to your final Sing-Off reactions, and then hoping you'll review their 10th anniversary renditions of these songs to see their growth, where the songs weren't rushed to fit into tv timelines, and the arrangements were done to perfection.

      I actually prefer most of the original SingOff versions to the new ones. The new I Want Crazy, for example, lacks any urgency, in fact the arrangement + video have little to do with the lyrics.(I don't know who hired the company making the band's videos now, but they are poorly edited and in some cases downright weak). Look at the amazing build-up in the live version, through a "false ending" and virtuoso singing. There's not much sense of that in the new version.
      In any case you can't compare a live performance of a song they had had a week to prepare, on top of endless rehearsals for the intro production numbers, with something endlessly polished and corrected by a brilliant producer.

    Today, Jewel would be appalled that they come out in t-shirts and jeans, hats and beanies. But that’s how they are comfortable. It doesn’t take away from the quality of their performances. And like you said, I wonder if the judges, especially Shawn, still follow them. I believe that Shawn does still follow and encourage them. I wonder how Ben would feel about the maturity in their voices now, and how Chance contributes to the group. It’s all “what if”.

I am not being critical, trying to point out that this was 10 years ago. They have had time to hone their skill, their voices have matured, their stage presence has changed - they are much more comfortable now. There were interesting producer pressures going on. They told Home Free, who'd twice auditioned but didn't make the cut, they would get on the show if they would be "the country group." (The producers pressured VoicePlay - if you know them - to put a female in the group.) Then they told them to dress the part, which they didn't in the beginning. Those suits were not in the budget! I believe there was also some pressure to put Austin out front, because of his looks. 'All about ratings, of course. At some point, Home Free voted on whether they should call themselves a country band. Tim voted against , but was outvoted.

  • @nancyholter5646
    @nancyholter5646 7 місяців тому +5

    With the pressure they put Austin under to be front and center in the group things as well as the individual songs, he actually lost his voice that week. He was whistling during rehearsals to try to be able to sing 'for the prize'. I can't imagine the pressure that he must have felt that night.
    I think that Hunter Hayes song might have been considered pop, not country.
    HF was the only group that wasn't "uniformed" or glitzy. They were just themselves - like they still are. Which might have played into her comment. But I think they did have a bit more 'something' in that performance, frenetic energy, perhaps. I have heard the new version of this and although the speed/bpm is the same, the effect is less frantic - can't explain it.
    And, no, as far as I could tell, they had no ears. They do now, of course, but not on the show. I have seen Adam 'be' the metronome for them when they have done off-mic off-stage.
    Baritones don't get a lot of spotlight in a group like this. And I know the judges had no idea of the arrangements Chris can do - the ones he and Tim did for the show were pretty tame compared to some of theirs - especially the older stuff Chris did before the SO. Again - go watch the Joy to the World from the Christmas performance in 2013( better yet, the entire show!), or dig up the audio of their albums. SOOO not country.

      in fact I believe the stylists wanted the guys to look rather shabby, so they had to go and buy secondhand clothes! I think Jewel meant an overall visual image, as opposed to a collection of guys on a stage. I completely agree about the new version of I Want Crazy, which to me was disappointingly lacking in any passion or urgency.

    • @minneyruth
      @minneyruth 6 місяців тому

      I agree with " I want crazy" the new version isn't as energetic and the video didn't go with the song. Nobody was getting crazy 😅

    • @nancyholter5646
      @nancyholter5646 6 місяців тому

      @@minneyruth I haven't quite figured out why the new version seems less energetic - it is 104 BPM as opposed to 106 on the SO, you wouldn't think that would make much difference, And although the new one seems to speed up toward the end, all that changes is the underlying beat doubles, the BPM stays steady throughout. What we don't have is Austin's nearly frantic delivery, or even the delivery he had on the Medley - which was 107 BPM. Ah Ha!! I just noticed that the new one doesn't have the staccato delivery that the older ones have, it is much more legato - more ah-ah-ah instead of ah! ah! ah! - if that makes any sense at all. It is closer to the Hunter Hayes original, which was even a beat or two slower, but toward the end has some vigorous guitar picking for 'movement'.

    After the Sing Off, Home Free took the "star quality" to heart and hired the choreographer from the show to be their choreographer for stage shows. Still no crazy dancing but a better stage presence perhaps? Otherwise, they were doing it all themselves. And with Chris...I think he was comfortable in the background. He did quite a bit of arranging and seemed okay with letting the guys shine. It wasn't until later, when he had the urge to write and sing on his own that he felt he had to step out, thus leaving the group. And he is happy with his career now...singing, writing, arranging, producing and even some competitive dancing thrown in.

    • @patriciamcl54
      @patriciamcl54 7 місяців тому

      From things that Chris has said, there were also creative differences about what the band should be doing. The band's management and some of the other members (don't now who) wanted the band to be more serious in its appeal, whereas Chis seems to have wanted to continue with comedy.
      The band also hired a stylist/photographer at this time, which also led to a better overall presence.

      @patriciamcl54 I miss the comedic parts. They each have such a great sense of humor and it only makes them more loveable in my opinion. I had not heard that with Chris. I do know there was something about his desire to write and sing in a solo capacity.

  • @higglety230
    @higglety230 7 місяців тому +3

    This is more my impression of these sorts of shows than something I actually know, but it always seems to me that a lot of the judges comments are theatre and not reality. There needs to be a kind of impression of suspense-a sort of will they/won’t they advance to the finals. So even when it’s obvious to the judges who is the best, they have to give them enough criticism to maintain the illusion that someone else could possibly win. I think that also, for their own egos sake, want to make it look like it was their critique that spurred the artists on to their ultimate success. In this case, they took a group that performed all genres and made them pretend to be a country group, then they encouraged them to “go outside the box” and praised them for becoming what they actually already were.

    You two are so much fun!! True Home Fries to the core! 👍 Now you know why the poor reactor gets put through the ringer if they don't like a song. 😄
    I watched that season when it aired (and been a rabid fan ever since) and the thing is... the guys got rave reviews "every week" until Colder Weather. It wasn't the judges that didn't want Rob, it was the show producers. They could see how much the audience was in love with Tim and Austin, so they kinda went with "don't fix what isn't broken". After all, they only care about the show, not the singers. And the competition was fierce that season. "Ten", who ends up in the top 3 were all pro singers (all 10 of them) and had individually toured as backup singers in some huge name bands (like MJ, Beyonce, etc, I think). The high school kids group, also in the top 3, were crazy, incredibly good too. So the judges had to get real nit picky towards the end. Believe it or not, the guy's critiques from the judges were wayyyy better than the others got. You could also tell after week 3 that HF was a favorite for "everybody". We didn't know if they'd win yet (well, I did/hoped!! 😉), but they were still a favorite. They're just fun guys and you could see that with the judges interactions. Even the other groups and their families were cheering for HF. 😄 In the show's opening numbers, they kept bringing Tim and Austin out front all the time and gave them solos too. So keeping all that in mind... I'm sure the critiquing for the guys looks worse than it was. I didn't like it either, but I understand it.
    This journey with y'all has been so much fun! I can't wait for the rest!!

    Jerism: An new tertiary subcategory of English; see Common English> Colloquialisms >Street Slang. *Editor's Note: Please be advised that this category is frequently subject to changes and additions. . . . . . . . ABOUT THE JUDGES: I have felt from my first time seeing some of the Sing Off videos that HF was unexpected to them. A group of 5 guys who all had lead voice capabilities, who voluntarily choose the most fitting voice to lead which song. A group who does not appear to have a diva in the bunch. A group of friends out to have fun, doing what they love, producing good music. The fact that they are all musically masters of their Universe was probably the last thought on their minds. Looking back from present day, and seeing that all of those attributes seem to have shown up in all of their music catalog, gives the Judges a few grace points for not recognizing the unique strength of the group individually or in their spectacular aggregate. Once again I love, love love home Fry days. Up here in the middle of the country I would tell you to keep warm, but in Arizona I guess that it is a year round state of affairs. 🌞

    I think it is so much fun that y’all are reacting to these way off the path songs with the judges comments.
    And I hate to say it, but their newest version of this song with Rob singing the lead is just so wrong. This song was meant for Austin‘s voice.
    The sing off is where HF learned to perform for the crowds. And they took every suggestion to heart, and became the amazing HF they are today.

    The producers kept the guys rehearsing for hours every day, especially Austin, who almost lost his voice as a result. He was so worried about it that he didn't even warm up before the show, to keep the voice rested before a song with a very demanding lead part. Jewel had told him not to be afraid of the top notes, and thought he had indeed gone for it, but in fact what you can hear is desperation, as he had no idea if he would get to the end of the song. That's why he's a bit pitchy in the last section.
    Actually it's quite funny to hear Austin talking about the endless round of gigs and doing the same show over and over, as if he had been with the band 20 years instead of a few months!
    I don't care for the new video and to my mind they lost the urgency of the live version and of the version in the Hunter Hayes Trilogy video. I don't know who directed/edited the new video, but since when do Home Free have videos ogling at girls' legs? Lots of second rate pizzaz can't conceal a rather boring narrative line, unpleasantly reminiscent of the 80s John Carpenter horror/satire movie, They Live.
