    Kids today will never know the excitement of buying the game in a store and staring at the box reading everything multiple times giving you a glimpse of what was to come as you sat in the car on the way home... Then as the game installed reading the little intro booklet over and over.....

      Back in the day I would force myself to read the entire manual before even starting the game. I no longer do that of course, you'd be lucky to even find a manual these days. The greatest manual ever might be the original Fallout.

    I must admit I was one of the people who didn't know about dragging spells to your hotbar. I played a NE hunter until like lvl 7 with the spell book open and i constantly spammed the autoattack button, not knowing it was a toggle feature as such. I may look back and laugh at this, but ill never retrieve the sense wonder and feelings of an overwhelming expansive world that I had back then.

    • @TaskForceSixTwoSix
      @TaskForceSixTwoSix 3 роки тому +7

      Yes, that sense of ignorant exploration and naive wonder was a huge part of Vanilla WoW's magic. I did a *ton* of super noob stuff back then too.
      For example, I absolutely hated to quest, and so I literally grinded mobs all the way up to 60. And that grind was made all the more torturous since 1) I was a warrior who played by myself; and 2) I didn't understand how the gearing system worked at all.
      I would grind mobs for hours so that I could sell the drops for copper and silver and then buy new gray-tier gear from blacksmith NPCs. And since I was only upgrading my armor value and none of my other stats, not even stam, I had to farm mobs that were several levels below me or else I'd die.
      And I did that for *months* all the way up until like level 38(!) when someone finally randomly came up to me in ararthi highlands where I was farming the same raptor spawns day after day and said something like "Um, why are you still wearing all gray gear and farming these same mobs all day?"
      That guy was *super* nice. He basically held my hand and walked me through how to play the game properly. He even escorted me to the major Alliance faction cities like Iron Forge which blew my fucking mind since they were so freaking cool.
      I don't remember that guy's screen name or even which class he played (all I remember is that his character was a dwarf male), but I still remember you dude 15 years later.

Believe it or not, but the people that were warning that this would be the end of Blizzard's reputation for quality were a pretty small minority in the community. It sounds condescending and boomerish but I sincerely feel bad for people that will never know the hype that was early WoW. There's a triple A open world every other week these days, but Blizzard entering the MMO market when all we had were the EQ/AC/UO trifecta. Not knocking those games, but Blizzard was one of if not THE biggest PC developers at the time, and anticipating an MMO with that kind of pedigree and budget was just world changing at the time. And the question as to whether it lived up to the hype can be answered in the fact that we're still here watching videos about the damn game in 2020.

    Something that remains true all these years later - up to Wrath, the game had great audio feedback. You could close your eyes, and know what kind of attacks and spells were going on, could probably guess at the environment, could even get a good idea of what classes were involved.
    Sound design used to serve the gameplay more than it does now, in a lot of games.

    Hey, Rend is the first ability you use after you charge at a mob during leveling! Before you have mortal strike or blood thirst, it has the highest damage and definitely better rage efficiency than mortal strike. And a warrior kills a mob so damn slow that sometimes it takes 2 full rend durations before the mob/ I died!

    • @yeetdeets
      @yeetdeets 3 роки тому +3

      Even sunder armor is often more efficient than BT/MS due to the time the mobs take to die. I saw most success with charge->rend->sunders until half hp->pool rage and repeat. At 35 sweeping strikes+whirlwind+whirlwind axe made pulling more mobs and skipping sunders viable. Even then rend and sunder are good skills to use when killing 1 by 1.

      @yeetdeets 3 роки тому

      @@blizzardaddict1383 Yes but you don't get any rage from next swing, which is something like 20-40 rage depending on gear and RNG of the swing. So you do like 60 damage or whatever heroic strike is for you at the time, for 35-55 rage. It's a very expensive burst of damage, and you can do way more damage spending the rage on rend and sunders.
      Heroic strike is only really good for dual wield fury warriors in the end game, and even then mostly due to how it interacts with miss chance on the offhand, which is outside the scope of my comment.

    In Poland we had our CD-ACTION magazine (in fact it's still around even today!) and I remember their WoW review. I was just a little kid so I couldn't afford it by my own, and my parents were too poor to buy my one. So I had to play bugged private servers (honestly nothing was working back there), but after years of waiting, finally I found a job and my first thing I bought with my first payment was World of Warcraft up to WoTLK (because it was around that time).
    And then I remember playing in warm summer days with my window opened up, a little breeze was just calmly going in to my room, everybody were sleeping and I was questing. I was in almost trans-like state. I didn't wanted to eat, pee, drink. I was so immersed that I was able to sit even 28 hours non-stop.
    Good times, good memories.

      I blame the pay-to-win multi accounters, multiboxers, rampant bots, and Blizz not caring anymore. The WoW players themselves are probably the same as in vanilla: mostly decent and willing to try to be nice with a relatively large percentage of sweaty, angry trolls thrown into the mix. We don't feel the same because minmaxing takes away from the excitement and unpredictability of adventure and discovery but that's natural and fine. The loss of innocence regarding MMOs and the internet in general makes it unnecessary to share information and learn from each other too, but overall I think the WoW community is still fun and full of endless possibilities, whether good or bad. I don't think we will ever see a community like vanilla again but people are still cool.
