Just for the record: the pavan was a kind of entrance dance at the beginning of an event such as a celebration of some kind. The purpose was for the people of the highest social class to show off their finery and perhaps begin to flirt with their partner. Still, a pavan was a solemn dance, the prelude to an evening party renaissance style. Look for a video of a "galliard" which traditionally followed the pavan. That will show you how lively dancing during this era could be. BTW, the name "pavan" is derived from the Spanish word "pavón" meaning "peacock." The word galliard on the other had comes from the French word "gaillard," meaning "merry." I guess you can tell by now this is a subject that I'm very interested in. To quote a line from the "Rocky Horror Show," "No shit Sherlock!"
Thx for helping me out in the middle of the night, I need to perform this dance tomorrow in class and I didn't know how to do it. Now I do. Gifted you your 1000th sub as a thank you!
Nice to know they've recreated steps for these dances. Like I was puzzled what "Bouree", etc mean, only to find out later that what I have been listening to are music made for dances of the same name.
Isnt´s there something missing? I know the dance with a little 'hop' after each step to the rithm (which I also miss) The Pavane d'honneur is a very simple dance on it´s own anyway, but this is just walking basicly. Nice executed, but just walking.
+Karishma Changlani (LearningSpanish) ahaha, no. This is not an accurate depiction of a pavane. There were lots of pliés, demi-pointes and turns in it. Hops were in other dances like gaillard. At any rate, it looked more like slow ballet with less turn-out and lower legwork, as ballet was developed from courtly dances.
According to the dances I watched on UA-cam tonight, the hop dance was the Galliard, but I was looking for the one where the man would bow as the lady would curtsy. I just can't find it. It would have been danced at the time of the Musketeers, I think, 1640's - ish.
I cannot believe this video was only a bit over 1 minute. I thought it went on for hours! After the first 10 seconds, I was was really hoping someone would start playing Sir Mix-A-Lot's, "I LIKE BIG BUTTS"
While reading a fiction based on the Tudors of England, I came across this word "pavane" ( when Princess Catalina/Katherine , bride of Prince Arthur - future first wife of Hemry VIII - is requested to dance on her wedding feast). I must say, after watching this (and other various forms of Pavane) I must salute those people back in the Medieval times for being able to live through such a monotonous thing as this.😅
"Belle, qui tiens ma vie" is the title of the melody, published by Thoinot Arbeau. He also published the dance description. But why do you omit the lifting of the heels, when closing the feet ? See youtube watch?v=TFuBLqUqDIo
thanks for telling the name. The crux with instrumental version is that you can't really search "dumm dumm di dumm di doodle di doddle doodle dumm" on google and expect to find sheets for the piece of music. XD
tom Dobl I do at least. I'm pants at remembering titles. OüO I hope at some time, we'll have a search machine that works with humming/whistling in melody snippets. :)
As a former musician and dancer, I would like a tiny bit of real dancing in between the walk. I can think of the movements in my head from modern dance days.
This is a dance that even old people post hip surgery can enjoy , I guess . Imagine the guy whom invented this dance showing everyone , all proud , being like ' Then you walk forwards slowly , then you stop - then you WALK BACKWARDS GUYS ..! ' and everyone applauds , mouths agape in awe , their minds blown .
awefull. horrible clothing and horrible violin playing. playing renaissance music on a modern violin as if it a Brahms piece with an overload of vibrato.
Got to admit it; this dance was EXCITING.
😂
😂😂😂😂😂😂
Agreed. This was a stimulative and radical activity compared to sitting on my couch all day!

I imagined this dance in Renaissance dress, and it made much more sense. Think of a hall filled with people in elegant procession. Wow!
mrnibelheim Indeed, very Eyes-Wide-Shut-ey.
I totally agree.. very elegant if in proper clothing and set👌
Yes - it really needs the costumes
Damn, I hope they stretched for this.
Loved this comment hahahh
The best comment! LOL
F Howl 🤣😂☺️😂☺️🤣
Ahahahaahah
I could never get this good at holding hands and stepping.
Touché!
Imagine the Renaissance people walk into a club now :D
😂😂😂😂😂😂
Qui est venu accose de sa prof
Considering how “scandalous” the Viennese waltz was when it came out I can only imagine the shark of seeing someone twerking.
It would take forever
Really love this period violin playing. Really makes me feel like they know what they are doing.
The pavane is not a “dance” strictly speaking, it is really more of a procesion set to music.
Thx for helping me out in the middle of the night, I need to perform this dance tomorrow in class and I didn't know how to do it. Now I do. Gifted you your 1000th sub as a thank you!
They Killed it!! lol broke a sweat haha

It’s so sad and beautiful.
Here cause someone just hit me with this in Words with Friends for an obscene amount of points.
Beautiful. back to the 16th century!
#lol
:)
Now that dance looks so hard :P
The tune is “Belle Tiens Ma Vie” by Thoinot Arbeau, which is typical for this dance.
THANK YOU
pareille
La même
Renaissance must have been so FUN
Gracias. 😊🙏🌻

I think its just to lay out the basic foundation. You are supposed to add more frill onto it, but what you saw is the foundation.
more than beautiful
Was it really like this. I was expecting just a little more hop, maybe makes more sense with the right clothing?
+Karishma Changlani (LearningSpanish)

I was expecting more sway. Can someone post a video of a more typical pavan.
