    this particular dance is a tradition passed down through the generations when young women came of age and were introduced to the 'lord or the land' and declared as of a marriageable age. This is now a continuation of the tradition in the Hungarian community in Toronto for the past several decades.
    Now the ladies are introduced to the Governor General at a great ball once a year.
    I was lucky enough to have my eldest daughter dance this dance with her father a lot of years ago. It is a beautiful memory for all participants and let me say that you don't have to be rich, or even Hungarian to participate. You have to love music and good company.

      Giselle, there is a certain strand of the Chicago Polish American community that has been doing very elegant debut parties for almost a century, in the Grand Ballroom of the Conrad Hilton Hotel. The "debs" wore white gowns, as in this video, and the previous years' debs wore red gowns and they did their dances as well, sometimes mingling with the white-gowned debs. It was all to the lovely Strauss Waltzes. Everyone behaved appropriately, as I recall. Not only was the "White and Red Ball" a lot of fun, but so also were the rehearsals, the tea parties, meeting new people. Such fun! Such memories!

      That's awesome! Recently I've read a lot of manhwa with nobles setting of 17th & 18 th century, and there are a lot of ball scenes, beautifully illustrated, making me wonder if such concept of 'introducing to the society' still exists nowadays. It's great to know that indeed it does. That must've been a wonderful experience

      Because America doesn't have any class anymore. I wish I could have lived in the late 50's early 60's. The height of American culture. Has gone down hill since. Worked at a banquet center for awhile and I couldn't believe the style of Dancing now days! (I was blessed to be homeschooled, by older parents who saw where the school and world was headed. So I was not in the "narmal" culture). I could hardly believe "dancing" that way and in front of children! By a Quinceanera was going on in another room. They where dancing great! That was the party we watched. It was funny. It turned out to be a girl My sisters know. (They don't have each others contact imfo) She kept trying to get me to join the party, but since I was on the job sadly I couldn't. But My older Mexican coworker wouldn't even let me in the other party room unless it was necessary for a sweep clean. I do know how to square Dance though and it is fantastically fun! Sadly young people are joining hardly at all, so Clubs are having to close and the art is threatening to disappear. Our club close and sadly the nearest one is over a 1 1/2 hours away so we only get to go maybe once or twice a year. If you get a chance join and learn! It may be mostly older folks but they are way more fun then younger folks! The guys are seasoned smartypants. And love a good banter.

      That's why you change the step and direction of spin often. It helps combat the dizziness. I don't think a more beautiful dance was ever invented, but it's incredibly difficult since it is so fast. The Viennese waltz's meter is usually twice that of normal ballroom waltzes - whew, difficult and quite the workout.

With dance it gives confidence, respect for each others space if given the proper instructions something we can all gain. You don't need fancy clothes to dance. Returning to some basics can be a start in an increase to love, patience and tolerance. Doors to future possibilities. Need I say more 😊

    As a former ice dancer I realize just how difficult the timing and execution of the Viennese Waltz can be given the unusual syncopation of steps in relation to the music. These dancers all of whom are probably amateurs did a remarkable job of creating both the atmosphere and elegance of this "classic" ball room dance. Unfortunately the audience were just a bit over the top on more than one or two occasions as many others have mentioned. Nonetheless, very well performed indeed.

      You think whooping and hollering was invented yesterday? Look. When dances like this were popular they were still held at parties. Where people laughed and ate and drank, alot. If you think a ball is some kind of sterile occasion where some people dance pretty and others talk quietly, you're wrong. Its a party. The men would go off in other rooms and puff on cigars and get shitfaced. The women would sip on champagne and giggle and talk. Theres a reason why at the end of balls an idiot in a full tux would wake up with his shoes missing in a fountain. These parties were were wild. Held from sun down to sun up. Drop this illusion that everything used to be elegant and quiet and realize that people have always enjoyed being loud and making a scene.

    Usually, I’m a huge fan of clapping and cheering in competition and in showcase, and it normally is exhilarating, knowing the crowd is cheering for you. However, I do kinda think that cheering here isn’t really... applicable to the situation. They’re not so much dancing to impress with their moves as they are with their dignity/class.
    Also to the people who are saying this dance is superior to other dances FOH. No dance is superior to another. All dances are meant to evoke something. Hip hop doesn’t try to be dignified, it tries to be fun, and show a lot of skill while simultaneously making it look natural (although I suppose the same could be said about v-waltz, but they’re just different). We don’t need all this division in dance (and no, b4 anyone comes at me with you probably just to hip hop or rap, nah, I do mostly latin but also ballroom)
    Thx for coming to my TedXtalk

    • @joestrout3331
      @joestrout3331 4 роки тому +12

      I'm surprised the cheering is the main topic of comments on this video. It didn't bother me at all. Obviously this is a showcase (and a 16-person showcase at that). The audience members are family, friends, and probably a fair number of other dancers in the local club. If they want to cheer for their loved ones, why not? I get what you're saying about dignity/class, but I think you can show that by studiously ignoring the cheers as well as not having any.
      Mostly, what I see is over a dozen people who worked really hard to put on a cool show, and pulled it off with style. There must have been an awful lot of evenings and weekends getting all that to come together. Well done!

      Correct me if I am wrong but weren't debutante balls in North America especially, held by rich families from eg Boston or New York, (I am also thinking that Southern aristocratic families held similar type of ball / dance) who wanted to flaunt their wealth and find suitable partners for their eligible and desirable sons and daughters... I think the Viennese Waltz is beautiful as far as elegant historical dances go and the music is awesome, must be nice to have the money to afford this extravaganza.

    • @Irnbru4ever
      @Irnbru4ever 4 роки тому +4

      The history of the Viennese Waltz dates back to early 1800s and is an Austrian and German mix. It is a ballroom dance which I think was popularised in the early 19th century and better known through the use of music by Johan Strauss. In ballroom dancing today there are two versions, the International one and the American one. I have read a long time ago in some books where debutante balls were held in America throughout earlier history... I think I may have worded it different from you but my meaning was similar. It wasn't the Viennese Waltz I had issue with but the pretentious debutante reference. Mutton dressed as lamb in my opinion.. All show and definitely elitist

      You can. You danced when you were a toddler. We all did.
      It's like learning to play an instrument. Easier, because it's more natural.
      Nobody would try to learn guitar by taking a group lesson once a week and not practicing in between. That's how most people approach dance lessons.
      Practice a bit every day and you'll be the star of your classes.
      If you really want to make progress, take the occasional private lesson along with your weekly group lessons.
      Compared with learning to play an instrument, which would be a private lesson every week and daily practice.
