during your chess break, i discovered the chess content you had done with dan gheesling from a year ago and it was like a beautiful comedic spinoff, i would love to see a bit of that come back
"Remind yourself that overconfidence is a slow and insidious killer" a la Darkest Dungeon has rarely been more perfectly showcased than the second game
My honest opinion is that it isn't necessarily that your opponents are amazing in the opening, but that you don't look for ways to exploit them in the opening. You sort of do what you do and they do what they do, and then when there's less pieces on the board, you turn on your brain and start thinking of ways to exploit their bad moves. I think if you focused more on the opening, you would be as good in the opening as you are in the late game. I'm not trying to knock you at all either, I'm only 1100, so you're obviously better than me, I just think that it's easy to not evaluate as deeply in the opening because there's so many more moves to make than there is in the late game
So true, watching Naroditsky's speedrun videos made me realize how badly you can actually punish people in the opening when they make weird moves and you understand the weaknesses they create. Now applying that in my own games is another story, but nevertheless...
The problem is that the opponent's opening preparation is an unknown variable, so there is no obvious path to exploiting them unless your own opening knowledge tells you they made a mistake - and that means hours of studying.
I'm the same as Northenlion when it comes to the opening, just play enough natural moves to weather out the storm that is opening theory and hope that you're in a not too bad position then full focus on mid and end game. In all honesty, opening theory would definitely up my game but I'm happy where I am
@@TheS1lentX "but I'm happy where I am" And where is that, if you don't mind me asking? The reason I'm interested is that I'm more or less in the same boat as you lol.
I saw the forced mate in two during the last game and when he moved the queen into a mate in 3 situation against himself it made me die a little inside haha
Hey NL. I don’t know if you ever play chess off stream, or even have time to, but daily games are really awesome for your board vision. They allow you to use the “analysis” board during the game. I’m a 1200 and I often get 85-90% accuracy in the daily. Keep up the good content!
Important lore left out at the beginning of the video: NL's doctor told him this sort of thing (presumably the double infection) is very rare outside third world countries.
It's so painful that my opponents play at 85-90% accuracy every game, and than my egg will hang his queen clean and the opponents will just miss M2 and instead hang their queen right back. Where's my queen hangers smh. Granted I'm a bit higher rated but not that much it should make a difference. 31:51 This here is actually a common motif in openings like the Caro and the Slav. You are opening the dark square bishop, then playing Nd7 to enforce the c5 push. The Slav actually plays similarly to the Caro except white's e-pawn is less advanced leading to more solid and manoeuvring positions, so since you play the Caro it's definitely a good one to consider!
you blundered mate in two and they decided to give you their queen. 1400 chess at its best oh my god, now in a different game they blundered mate in two and you decided to give them 𝘺𝘰𝘶𝘳 queen. Truly spectacular
Egg I flipping love you, but you gotta take the computer's advice with a big ass grain of salt. They're like: "ah no that's horrible. 0.2 down. Play for draw" I think blunders/mistakes/missed wins is ok to keep in mind tho
As a noted Queen's Gambit enthusiast, the Slav Defense (2...c6) is kind of an anti-pog, not because it's good, but because it's turbo boring. Every time I see it played against me, I immediately just do the exchange and say "congratulations, you've chosen to draw on move 2." Honestly if you don't take the pawn you're kind of a coward. edit: okay the Semi-Slav Defense (2...e6 followed soon by c6) is actually respectable and doesn't have an easy counter. Thumbs_Up.jpg
NL it's not that everyone is 1900 in the opening and trash afterwards, it's that you are a 1000 in the opening and actually very good at middlegame complications. People don't play insane opening theory against you. I don't know why you keep thinking that. There are some basic gambits sure but if your opponent is thinking on move 3 they are not in theory.
He's pushing his pawns, I'm pogging my gourd
proof?
y man he pushin' p
29:45 I cried when he missed the checkmate 😭
Man I saw that and thought he was gonna go for it.
19:30 somebody revoke this man's (the opponent) 1300 card, he missed the most obvious check and mate I've ever seen.
I'm pretty sure the guy started throwing because he had checkmate
Game 2 was a Guess The Elo masterpiece
Someone send it to Levy

And he's back ❤ the small break had me fiending for chess content
Really enjoy your chess videos. Glad to hear everything is getting better! Let's hope it keeps going
4:12 Bishop to f2 is the move that saves his fork
Love to see you playing more chess. Glad to hear you're feeling somewhat better and I hope the health issues continue to back off!
Love his chess content! Glad to hear he is getting his medical stuff figured out
10:33 My best guess is it follows standard principles. Opens more room for further development, takes the centre and centralises the knights.
Nothing like a little brain massage to brighten my afternoon.
That last game fucking killed me. It was such an obvious mate too.

Hope your recovery continues on the right path! Wishing you the best of health for the future 🙂 loving the chess btw
9:36 This position for white is an awesome one to play against the Sicilian. It's called the Grand Prix Attack and it can get wild.
Happy to see you feeling better. Thanks for doing more chess, too!
Glad you feel better! Thanks for more Chess content.
Chess pog! Glad to see you're feeling better NL :D
I saw the forced mate in two during the last game and when he moved the queen into a mate in 3 situation against himself it made me die a little inside haha
Wow! I think your second opponent felt bad. He had mate in two with the queen. That's fair play!
funniest shit ive ever seen when the engine called the move that caused the opponent to resign a blunder lmao

Never get tired of NL chess content!
Thanks for making some bespoke youtube content!
Glad you're feeling better!
Can totally relate to be hypnotised with the fork and losing my queen. Go from Einstein to Trump in one move 🤣

Oh thank god mister! I’m glad you found my fix, I was fiendin!

4:10 why not bishop f2?
Saves bishop and can't take knight
There were some cool ideas this episode, well played
Holy hell, moves with (!) in the analysis? I think NL's back and ready to make big plays
check mate at 29:40 with the rook or im dumb??
Did he have mate in 2 at 29:43? And miss it completely?
“No pieces are hanging” (bishop stares down the queen)
no queens were harmed in the making of this video

Glad you're feeling better, NL. When the doctor asked if you had eaten anything unusual, did you mention the pawns you've been gobbling up?
Yesss Chess! Glad NL is feeling better.
Bob Dylan reference…that’s all I need baby in a NL vid
Love the chess content
Nice to see Ryan Gary Chess back at it
Feels nice to have a chess video again (Chess)
The pattern you identified at 12:30 doesn't quite work because the knight is hanging.
We're here. We're pogging. It's good.
