    I feel like if BBC promoted loona well from the start then they would have a lot more money than they do now. It’s been 3 years since loona has debuted as a full group, you can do a lot in 3 years. It’s just sad to see how the workers aren’t even being paid and the girls most likely aren’t either. I hope they get their sh!t together because if loona disbands then there is no hope for this company again, like ever.

    • @loonavlog

      yea the promotion is so off it's weird. their best promotion period ever was why not/star with the radio thing and international push, not to mention the star website, and then they drop the ball with PTT. ik there was the covid incident with a staff member but they could have done more social media promo for this era.. super weird. i think loona won't disband but they won't reach their full potential yk?

      The thing is I don't think people above even care about the small company. Like the video say mostly like BBC was a subside company made to laundry their **hard earn definitely clean money** but they somehow win the lottery and get the best artist and stuff the could so BBC and Loona keep going. If we think about it through out Loona career there are so many chances that they could blow up as a big group no less than big 3 GG but it always something behind the scenes stopping them At first I felt like Loona was handicap but now I felt like the whole BBC was handicap by those people.

      FR! especially the first subunit. They spent so much money sending the girls to Paris, Prague, Hong Kong, Thailand, England, and Iceland when I'm sure they could've just used the money to promote their songs more and had equally as beautiful scenery. Also, some of the MVs that they spent so much money to travel to didn't even have particularly interesting/unique sceneries.

    One thing BBC could add as merch is video calls with LOONA. They could charge whatever they wanted and orbits would buy, like a minute with each member. They could make SO much money like this. You could do them once every 2 weeks or something.

    disclaimer: i don't support or condemn anyone in this video. i'm holding comments for review bc i think some people are going to take this video that way, but maybe i'm misjudging you guys.
    things i'd like to correct:
    - i do not think loona will disband, but this news isn't good for any group and i think that is why we have such long gaps between cbs.
    - some stylists aren't good people and can sabotage groups but that's not the majority obv.
    - the CEO of polaris may be LJM's mother currently, but all the popular translated sources still say lee jong myung.
    - i included the thing about jinsoul's hair because regardless of it's truth or not, it was blown out of proportion because someone heard something at a fansign, and i recall kim lip having scalp pains in an old OEC interview (*needs fact-checking ok) but nobody seems to mind her being blonde at all.
    - when talking about lee gyu tae, i sound like i'm saying "LJT", but i am indeed saying "LGT", sorry about that confusion!
    thank you sooo much for watching i'm gonna post more lighthearted content bc this is so serious (aside from the memes ofc)

    I am on the opinion that the quality of their output are the reason they are as successful as they are. I do not know Jaden Jeong personally but I do believe that his contribution to Loona is what made them unique and marketable in the first place. Their current approach is not bringing the attention that the company wanted either (except for a bit more publicity and US radio), so this drastic change in goals didn't work in their favour fully. There are ways that they could have maintained their artistic vision without blowing their money away, it's a terrible case of unseasoned business practices, really. K-Pop is also an extremely risky market so we can't say for certain whether something will work out or not. Them relying on Loona to recuperate their losses is immature imo, especially when they could've likely solved it through more efficient methods instead of hoping for a miracle. Loona's pre-debut discography has already garnered a cult following even outside of K-Pop circles (like actual critical acclaim from the music community), which proves that their original plan is working, it's just coming more slowly. Not Letting the money spread out over time and instead throwing all in the bin was also likely the reason that Jaden left BBC, and let's not even talk about their failed obligations to their investors... They weren't even at a horrible desperate place at first but they kept digging themselves into a hole while alienating their fanbase through their music output while failing to reach the thing they abandoned so much artistic integrity for....
    Overall I love them and I think that they will be fine. I still think that BBC have the chance to reset and not be stupid, but the nihilist in me might disagree.

    Thanks for this great recap of events! Although I was keeping track of everything that happened in September, I am a bit unfamiliar with the Jaden era since I became an orbit just this year. One thing I found interesting is your explanation that Jaden wanted Loona’s music to be popular but the girls to be more mysterious. That explains a lot about their lack of social media presence while Jaden was there which persisted for the most part after he left. A recent development though is that the girls are now free to go live any time and on any platform (as long as they are in the company building). Any thoughts on this recent development? Also if you’re taking video recs, one about their lack of social media freedom throughout the years would be interesting. Like all the crazy rules they had (like no mirror selfies). Another interesting deep dive would be on Lee Soo Man’s involvement with Loona. Anyways, thanks for your great work again!

    • @loonavlog
      @loonavlog  2 роки тому +6

      i'm obsessed with this comment and these are such good ideas! i think the SNS freedom is truly a BBC thing and not so much influenced by jaden bc they could have let the girls be free a while ago, but who's to say right? it could have been.
      i think he was looking for a balance in how commercialized k-pop is, while still keeping them from being on-demand products. i'm sooo for the recent push in SNS usage, the girls really want to communicate more, just sucks that BBC has to face consequences and the wrath of orbits in order to do anything good.
      i'd love to talk about those topics sometime, so thank you and thanks for watching!

    I remember when Loona made headlines at first because the company announced the plan to make each member have solo activities before debuting and willing to spend millions of dollars on them. I found it interesting so I decided to investigate more about it and found it that they were subsidiary of another big company.
    I questioned myself if the project woul really work because BBC is a small company and Loona were their first ever kpop group. I wasn't a Loona stan during this time since big groups with a lot of members never intrigued me and I just felt there was something fishy that wasn't being told. When I would see comments about the huge investment being made with Loona, most people were oblivious about the situation and said that they would be okay since the CEO had a lot of money to spend.
    I just found this very odd because that isn't just how kpop works. Why would a company spend millions of dollars into a girl group especially their first ever kpop act if they knew that they were not going to get much of the money spent. Even big companies wouldn't risk themselves in that way if they knew a group wouldn't be as big. I thought that somebody was probably lending them all this money and they expected it back since that's how the music industry works but a lot of fans were reassuring themselves back then with the theory that the company that owned BBC was a part of the government and had a lot of money to spend etc...
    A couple of years later and we find out that the company is in debt and hasn't been able to pay its staff. The girls haven't even received a paycheck (even Chu who has the most gigs out of the girls) and BBC is going bankrupt. Considering how big Loona's fandom was overseas we probably thought they would be okay but I think the real problem here is BBC. They had a lot of chances to make the girls blew up and promote them better. When that clip of ViVi went viral for dancing to Russian Roulette blew up, what did they do? Nothing. Or when Orbits get together and made Loona trend #1 in the itunes chart? Not enough.
    Look at dreamcatcher who has a smaller fanbase than Loona yet are doing well. Even though the type of music they are making isn't public friendly, they've found what suits them. They probably knew that Dreamcatcher wouldn't be big in Korea but they still decided to go forward with the concept. That's the difference in management.
    I really wouldn't want Loona to disband. I don't think anybody does. So many people have been supporting Loona and giving them reinforcement but the real problem here is BBC and their awful management. Loona has such a great lineup and it is sad that this is happening to them. Even if people were to start a fundraiser in order to help reduce the company's debt, unless BBC realizes that they're wasting more money than they can get back then nothing is going to get solved. I wish somebody else would take care of the company's finances because sometimes they spend too much money on music video sets that they don't even use like the butterfly video.
    A director who worked in the MV said that BBC made the girls perform a lot of times and there's a lot of clips that never made it to the video. They have those recording but don't use them. If they were smarter they would use whatever resources they have. I just hope the best to Loona and wish that they can get out of this one.

    I COMPLETELY AGREEE with you I though the exact thing for a long time, I'm so glad to hear someone else think the same. I think the business model for Loona is what's failing, not the girls (obviously), not the choreographer, or stylist, or AR team, or makeup etc. I think their business model blew way too much money early with all the solo stuff before anyone had a chance to even see loona as a 12 girl group and before the girls really had any professional experience, so before everyone could really get to know and fall in love with loona. It's so sad! cause they can be so successful! Their songs, dance, visuals, concept and especially their performances are top notch!

    Good video. I really don’t know anything but here are some thoughts. I do think that JJ and BBC did part ways because of creative differences. BBC needed Loona to have mainstream popularity, and either they thought he couldn’t deliver, or JJ didn’t think he could/didn’t want to. End of the day, it doesn’t matter.
    I think, from BBC’s point of view, it makes total sense they are preparing a new group. They have no choice. They also know a girl group would be more well received by Orbits than a boy group. And they are sticking with what they know. BBC cannot survive without another group. They must be closer to debut than I thought, because they have turned the Loona members loose on social media. Obviously this is some damage control, but they are trusting the girls more.
    Most Kpop idols come out of their contracts making almost no money. Loona is so weird in this regard. They are having a lot of record sales, few mv views, and uneven member activities. I hope Chuu actually gets paid money at the end of this. I am worried. Lip thanked Chuu for all she has done for the group in their photo shoot interview. My heart sank. My question to Orbits that complain about member promo would be, how to get an advertiser/sponsor to pay for appearances by members that aren’t popular in Korea? Like I want to know ideas. You can’t do it for free, because you have to pay staff to go with them, so you will just loose money.

    • @loonavlog
      @loonavlog  2 роки тому +1

      that's true. i hope they have the resources to take care of a new group. the worst part is that it seems like they do have the resources but the money isn't going back into loona like it should. and i agree about the member promo thing, to have members make appearances it needs to be profitable.

    I so happened to find this video thanks to auto play and I stayed the whole way thru, length of it was totally justifiable. I thank you for all of the context, data and resources you highlighted throughout the entire video, I learned a lot of things that you wouldn't necessarily know about in a regular twt environment and I appreciate it a lot, pretty much agree with most of the opinionated parts of the video too so this was an amazing listen and great video essay! As a former stan of the group who even at that still wants the very best outcome for them, I can only wish for a miracle that gets them out of this terrible situation. It reeks corruption, shadiness and incompetence all over it from the executives and decision makers at the company this entire time and I couldn't feel more horrible for the girls and staff to be the ones catching the strays and consequences of it all. Fuck Chaebols.

    now that you say it... bbc wanting butterfly to be loona's breakout song makes sense but they printed less copies for that album than what [+ +] sold in less than 20 days... this company is just a fucking joke, I might sound delusional but I just know LOONA could've sold nearly 100,000 copies with that album but they decided to simply sabotage them by printing less than 45,000 copies and by the time I'm writting this, still haven't even thought of doing a massive reprint when we all know it could go sold out in minutes

    I really disagree about the unreleased content. If it is meant to be *initially* shown in concerts or meet n greets/fan events that’s fine, but what Orbits are upset about is that BBC doesn’t release that content later on when enough time has passed. Orbits clearly want the content and it doesn’t harm BBC whatsoever to release it. It would actually benefit BBC because then they can at least get the ad revenue from UA-cam rather than orbits having to upload it secretly and not even have subtitles bc it’s “stolen” content. Especially since a lot of the earlier content directly dealt with the Loonaverse and added IMPORTANT explanations to the storyline. A big appeal to new fans of LOONA is the Loonaverse, so why not release that content so new orbits can get to learn the Loonaverse as much as orbits who have been around since pre-debut? I think it’s ridiculous that orbit theorists have to reference bootleg recordings of key videos about the Loonaverse when they could just link to LOONA’s channel if BBC actually uploaded the content.

    • @loonavlog
      @loonavlog  2 роки тому +5

      that's fair, it's a pretty unpopular opinion. for me, the nature of those videos is what got me really into loona, since it basically combines "lost media" and kpop, but ik for the majority of people it's not the best thing.
      i just don't really think it would make much of a financial impact at all to release it now randomly. maybe on an anniversary?
      i think nowadays they wouldn't mind too much in uploading it, but i think they want people to forget about the loonaverse's story and just enjoy the little references and throwbacks.
      and bbc is just so weird about content in general, it's so bizarre.
      i think orbits should definitely have the right to learn about the loonaverse without watching a video recorded from inside someone's jacket pocket though!
      at the online premier greeting from & era, they could have shown new loonaverse short clips, but it was totally different from that. i think they just want to bury all the complex loonaverse things that hint at a real storyline but also keep oldbits interested.
      thanks for watching! i appreciate it :)

    Great video!! I really appreciate the amount of research you put into this! Research and Facts are so important to creating credibility. This is what happens when Entertainment Companies (especially smaller ones) don't have a CFO or someone in charge of finances, like an Accountant. Spending and Revenue is not managed correctly, resulting in the current status of BBC and Loona. And like you mentioned, this is not the first time this has happened, causing an ongoing uncertainty amongst the fans, business partners, and staff...I hope by exposing BBC's mis-management of Loona, will evoke accountability on their part. Members of Loona have worked so very hard and have always stepped up to plate in everything they have been asked to do! Where I am sure, they sacrificed their well being and health to do it! This is their DREAM to perform and be an idol. So I hope BBC realizes, the girls deserve BETTER.

    this was a fantastic video. really informative. i know no girl group stan really wants to hear this right now, considering the controversy over gfriend's sudden disappearance, but really honestly, i feel like a much larger company with a decent reputation investing in or purchasing bbc, or even just the group, would be so so beneficial to the girls. yes, i'm talking about hybe, now that pledis has acquired fromis9 and things (as far as i'm aware) seem to be running smoothly. and until somu pulled the plug on gfriend, they were thriving under hybe. maybe hybe isn't the perfect answer or the best fit, but i feel like bbc are going to have to be willing to consider a joint acquisition of loona if they care about their career continuing much further. especially if they're planning to debut a new group soon and they've run out of money to pay their staff, someone else is going to have to be helping pay their bills. unless of course, like you mentioned, the company itself is just a cardboard company for tax purposes, in which case, they would never agree to someone else's acquisition.
    it's also interesting considering the structure of bbc as a subsidiary, especially since the ceo is married to the ceo of polaris, which is tied to the chaebol and on and on and on. the fact that they have run out of loans and investments only, what, five years into the company's life? under a chaebol? with what **should** be a rather large money pile. jesus christ.
    again, thanks so much for this. i usually don't watch videos like this because they tend to be full of orbit panic and misinformation, but it seems you really did your research to try to get to the bottom of the problem and not just blame jaden for everything like so many people do. keep up the good work!

      @loonavlog  2 роки тому +1

      yeah, the last thing i wanted to do is be too sensational with my title/thumbnail, and i honestly probably should have been, but the last thing orbits need is to be worried or misinformed.
      i'm personally ok with hybe acquiring the girlies in any form because it has a higher chance of being better than what we have now, and i think longtime orbits are used to change by now. it's an unpopular opinion though, and they don't necessarily have to have the same fate as gfriend either since they're totally different. kind of like how ladies code and loona are on different paths. but i get how some orbits worry about that.
      the whole bbc/polaris/ilkwang setup is as chaebol as you can get and ofc i say alleged, but i definitely think there's money being pocketed or even being laundered through loona's group activities. it's so unnerving to think about..
      truly hoping for the best, not expecting disbandment because they seem like they are chugging along despite everything, but i think they won't reach their full potential as 'artists under this company.

    I think what happened with loonatheballad is Jaden was in his feelings and really couldn’t resist posting about it. Like he was clearly upset about going separate ways from the company, and I feel for him to that extent
    Do I like him? Not necessarily, the one thing that sticks out in my mind as “unprofessional” IS the loonatheballad post. Also it seemed clear to me that he meant he deleted the files off his computer, not that he deleted every single part of the album off everyone else’s computer? Like he obviously didn’t compose all that himself. I do respect his vision though
    Big vision creative types are often difficult to work with, think about someone like James Cameron. Is it okay to be an asshole because you want your ideas to be faithfully realized? No, but also the only thing we’ve heard other people say about Jaden is that he had a lot of ideas and sometimes it was difficult to follow. Wasn’t that from someone at Monotree...? Regardless, I don’t expect Jaden to be some unproblematic king, I expect him to be good at his job and to not make embarrassing Instagram posts where you unfortunately made it seem like you deleted an album out of sadness. And he only failed with the latter portion so I really don’t care about twitter threads where they blame him for things that they would realize someone with his job isn’t in charge of if they were less mad and more thoughtful

    Also not to be a manager fan, but honestly I think they’d be bringing in a lot more money if they stuck with their original concept, you can tell BBC is trying hard to make sellable music these days rather than unique, high quality music that Loona is known for.

    Don't just scapegoating company for their project, any project can fail even with perfect management especially when the project related to customers taste/preference. There's even more factor than company management that decides project succession. There's also more fierce competition of behind the scene of a group which even harder for small not-well-known company.What loona need i believe was great start, and in kpop industry means a very very good song. Performance or visual is most times no doubt great, but a great great song?, not every group start with one. That great song is like an opening that decides group fate. Cause when they start great they start with good exposure, good earning,good turnaround etcs. Most group start with hit song are doing fine. With sorta failed start, they failed to show their charm not because they arent beauty, talented or unique but because they had no chance to get great exposure, the fact that they have 12 members makes it even worse. I hope that even when they disband some member who are well recognized can still pursue their dream in ent industry

    I honestly don't think most people know how much it cost to create songs and content for a group. I read somewhere that a big 3 company spends about $500K (I'm assuming USD) for a comeback on average. Not only that, but you probably have a huge support staff you have to pay because managing a large group, not including the cost of maintaining a building, legal issues, copywrite/trademark stuff. Let's say a solo/unit comeback is much cheaper since you don't need as much support staff it still cost money to make the songs and mv. I've heard for US artist if you sign a 1 million dollar album contract, you need to make around 10 milion back in order for the company to be profitable. I honestly don't think they are bringing those numbers in with their appearances and album sales. I know for US artist a majority of their money now comes from performances at their own concert and idk it doesn't seem like Loona does them.
    There's another just overarching problem. Since they have already releases hogh quality content they have to continue to do so or else fans will be mad. Any regression usually comes woth backlash, so they kind of have to spend the money for high quality content. Also, the rest of the industry is pour loads of money to do this so if they aren't doing it as well they wouldn't have any eyes on Loona. Most US companies only consider a few artist to be super successful and they make the bulk of that company's revenue (like a Taylor Swift or Drake). Everyone else on the label that isn't that level is usually considered to be a flop in the companies' eyes. It sucks to see groups go, but it hard to maintain if there is no domestic support. I think part of the problem is Stan culture, can't support other groups if you stan one group. Also Kpop groups have just an entirely different model when it comes to merch and concerts. Honestly wish there was more official like T-shirts and hoodies we could buy from any group. But I think a reason they don't do this is because they can be easily replicated and sold for cheaper.
    Anyway just a random dropping by adding my two cents in.

    • @loonavlog
      @loonavlog  2 роки тому

      yeah there are a lot of factors that go into stuff like this, just unfortunate that even the smaller/mid-size companies engage in shady business practices that can hurt their artists.
      but i think stan culture helps k-pop artists financially; i don't understand what you mean by not being able to stan more than one group? most k-pop stans i know actively follow and spend on more than one group. and stan culture makes it so that people are willing to throw money at group before they even debut.
      but i've definitely noticed that there's a quality standard k-pop groups are expected to have or they won't be noticed, which is a shame :(
      there are so many elements to it all, it's complicated haha. thank you for your comment and for watching!

      @@loonavlog Most people are stans of the biggest groups so most of the market goes to them. That leaves very little for the rest of market. but that's just what happens when there is this much competition in the msrket. People at the bottom are just fighting to get 1% or more. The industry also doesn't like banking on talent that has already been established it seems like. If a group doesn't want to stay with their original company it's very rare to see them just move the whole group to another company. Usually just ends in disbandment. I think this is probably because the resources it would take to keep an established group going is just a lot higher than making a new group.

I also think the parent company is going broke otherwise why dont they have the money to pay back stuff if they are really "rolling" in money, money not their own of course.

      they tried to pander more internationally with why not/star promotions and then disappeared basically. i think it's important to cater to domestic fans since that's where all the appearances and opportunities will be, but they just don't ever do it effectively.
      and yeah seems like bbc is "broke" but the parent company has more than enough assets.

      if you mean hula hoop or yummy yummy, hula hoop is a japanese release so it was barely promoted which is typical for those.
      yummy yummy is a cocomong collab so it's cute but not really a "real MV" haha. and it was delayed so i think people lost hype.
      PTT did really well though because it was promoted pretty decently :)

    Didn’t they just release a new mv? Or was that a Jpn promo? Either way how are they still able to promote them?

      yes, and it was done with universal music japan. :) faryoung kim claimed she wasn't paid for hula hoop's choreo at the time as well. it's not that bbc doesn't have any money, it just seems that it's not managed well.

    never thought I'd say this but bbc should take notes from sb (chn48 company) when it comes to coming up with creative ways of milking fans' wallets.
