The Elysée Palace first occupant was the count of Evreux, Louis-Henri de La Tour d'Auvergne, built by the architect Armand-Claude Mollet and was called Hôtel d'Evreux first.
A 125-year-old French embassy elsewhere sits on a wooded real estate 17 times larger than these palace grounds even though it lacks its ornate, some say gaudy, facilities.
