I remember clearly the very first time I was a young musician on a gig and an older drummer turned to me in the middle of a jam and yelled "hey, play the Bo Diddley beat."
Lucky for me a few months before this when I was about 16 I got to go on a west coast blues tour opening up for John Lee Hooker Jr. On that tour we played Bo Diddley every night in the set. So when the drummer yelled that in the middle of this other song I knew exactly where to take the rhythm.
In this guitar lesson you'll learn how to play Bo Diddley by Bo Diddley.
The Bo Diddley beat is a syncopated rhythm that is super common in rock & roll and pop music.
Bo Diddley popularized this beat with his self-titled debut single, "Bo Diddley", in 1955, and in this guitar tutorial I'll break down the Bo Diddley beat for guitar players.
This is an essential rhythm and groove every guitarist needs to know. First I'll show you the rhythms/chords, and then I'll also show you more of a lead part that Bo Diddley plays as a solo using double-stops higher up the neck.
To me it is very similar to the Latin clave rhythm. It's more active and complicated than a typical rock rhythm, but less complicated than say Afro-Cuban rhythms.
    Let's break it down!

    🎤Lyrics:
Bo Diddley bought his babe a diamond ring
If that diamond ring don't shine
He going to take it to a private eye
If that private eye can't see
He'd better not take the ring from me
    [Verse 2]
Bo Diddley caught a nanny goat
To make his pretty baby a Sunday coat
    Bo Diddley caught a bearcat
To make his pretty baby a Sunday hat
    [Verse 3]
Mojo come to my house, you black cat bone
Take my baby away from home
Ugly ole mojo, where you been
Up your house, and gone again
Bo Diddley, Bo Diddley have you heard?
My pretty baby said she wasn't for it

My friends backed BO one night and he wouldn't spend more than two minutes rehearsing them. when he was walking away the drummer said "Are we gonna play "Hand -Jive?, that's a great one". Bo put down his guitar and yells " THAT'S NOT MY SONG, IT'S THAT FUCKIN' JOHNNY OTIS" Hilarious scene! Cool lesson!

Thanks John! I dig that you use the thumb over the top chords. They seemed strange to me when I first started using them, but I am getting used to them and like it.

Oh this is great. I actually asked in the comments of a more recent video if you've covered Bo Diddley. I didn't see it in your channel, but the UA-cam algorithm just popped this into my feed 👍🏼😅 thank you!

I’ve looked at about 10 videos teaching the Bo Didley beat. I like how much time you spend on the initial chord and rhythm. I’m gonna try this. I need more thumb chord and muting practice.

Yeah! Keep in mind I've been playing these shapes for years so my hands have stretched out over time. Yours will too. In a lot of ways thumb chords are so much more efficient and actually make playing guitar way easier once you get past making it over the first high ground. Keep it up!

Bo played for the most in open E and used a capo thus if you really want to get his sound add a some tremolo, reverb, and delay.

Bo Diddley commented that he thought the only guy that really got his beat and understood it was Brian Jones.
Jon, I think you’re the second guy that really understands it great lesson Second only because Brian was a little bit before you.

He used open E on this song. You can see in his performance on Ed Sullivan that he is just using one finger to play the chord.

If you are good at math and remember thousand of keys and notes, you can play guitar.

Don't overthink guitar, find music you like, and learn to play that. Music's easier when you enjoy playing it, play what you like and your finger dexterity and knowledge will grow over time. Learning new music gets easier, so start by playing something fun and don't stress about it.
