We had a gehl mill on the farm we raised alot of hogs , ground feed 3 times a week , makes me think of a memory riding home on the bus it was pouring rain like 38 degrees out as I was the last to get off the bus having a talk with Marge are driver this is gonna suck grinding feed in the rain , dad left me a list of chores mom told me to change clothes n get a shack n get busy Temps to fall freezing rain to heavy snow . Got the 1650 diesel it was always on the mill one load in the rain n freezing rain one in a snow blizzard chores all done sure glad gramps showed up in the snow storm , had alot of responsibility for a 14 year boy best thing I remember my gramps standing frozen bill of his hat covered in snow n ice and a smile on his face as I was cleaning the mill n tractor off as he gave me a hug you do as your asked and never complain . As we walked to the house to get warm think your mom would make some coffee, I said I bet she sure will walking in 4 inches of snow . From turkey creek farms be safe n thankful

Here at a sale that would be $750+, and most days with good weather at a sale probably a $1000. I say you gave $300. Good mills are getting hard to find in my area, the salt rusted them out when the feed was left in them drawing some moisture. In the 90's, I bought a clapped out IH 1150 for $400, used it for a few years, came across a hydraulic drive NH 357 that was pretty good at another sale and bought it for $500, sold the IH for $200. When the cows left in '04 I sold the NH for $2000 and the guy thought he stole it. Got a different place 10 years ago, decided to run some beef so looked for a mill, after going to sales and seeing junk bring $1500, I put up a wanted ad online. Local guy answered and said he had a Gehl 65 for $900. I went and looked at it, was ok, ended up buying it compared to what was at sales. Replaced bearings, belts, auger flighting on it. Worked ok, but hated the mechanical drive on it and it was slow with the elf hammer mill. Seen a MX120 Gehl hydraulic drive with a scale on auction time in IA, paint was in the augers yet, hammers never turned. Watched it, got it bought for $2k, local trucked it here on the neck of a detachable while hauling a corn planter for next to nothing. Had it a number of years now, put a few bearings in, but have done nothing else to it. Works good but not quite as nice as a NH 355 or 357 but those are taller and wont fit in my building to unload. I went to a consignment sale here right after it came and one was there in rough shape and brought what i paid, so I felt better about myself. There aren't many out there now to pick from and the prices show it.
A few around me had those shellers, was a way to use one piece of equipment instead of having a separate sheller, I seem remember some guys shelling out of cribs, not running the hammer mill, corn fell into the bottom auger and into the tank, they then bagged the shelled corn out of the tank to sell.

For ear corn try the 3/4 inch screen first. That tube added to the drag auger is to help direct shell corn into the flighing. I have a lot of trouble with super dry shell corn spilling back down the auger. Take the tube out for ear corn.

Ross on the feed auger extension , take the c clamps off slide the extension out and rotate 180 degrees , the ear corn falls into the sheller! Ross here in windy south central Kansas i'd put my right arm up wind , blow the cobs out of it ! My bear cat grinder looks bigger then your grinder. Grinding corn stalks I can pull the engine down on a John Deere 4010 diesel (70 h p). On my 4020 diesel I don't pull the engine down (80 h p ). Hope this helps you!

I saw a New Farmhand grinder/sheller at the Clay county fair at Spencer Iowa in the early 80's. In the early 2000's I saw one on an estate sale on the Clay/Buena Vista County line. I assumed it was the same one? The manual for my Artsway shows a picture of a sheller attachment available but no further information.

  • @kenshaum3994

It was not as bad as you think, we used the sheller all the time. There is a piece that sits on top of the opening to the hammer mill that feeds the to the corn sheller . You just put a trailer to the side of it to blow the cobs into

  • @larryfrey1283
    @larryfrey1283 11 місяців тому +1

If you pick a load of corn and decide to put it through the sheller the cobs and husks are good for drying wet spots in the pasture although wood chips from a local tree service work better you just have to avoid conifers

I watch Iowa Country Girl channel, they use a Artsway mixer. They combine ear, shelled corn and then add mineral. Don't remember what ratio they used. Might help you get an idea. When we did chicken feed, we used shell corn, mineral and a bale of hay. Also, Ross if you don't use the strings on your hooded shirt, get rid of them, please. I have seen a close call.

  • @bradleyhughes6853

As far as the sheller goes, for feeding hogs that grinder would have been great. We used to shell corn for the sale hogs and use ground up ear corn for the breeding stock to keep them more lean, didn't have anything to do with their body not being able to handle cobbs.

    • @rosstheoliverman

I rolled a 352 mill like that one on flat ground. It is easier than you think. I drove across one of those groves cattle walk in the ground at an angle. One wheel dropped in and popped out the same instant the other wheel dropped in. Flipped it instantly. Tore it to pieces. I was not traveling fast or careless at all. Needless to say I just sat on the tractor dumbfounded for awhile.

We had a arts way 4?? something. We ran it with our 1800 gas Oliver straight geared,,later my dad converted it to LP,,Boy that cleaned up that engine,,after doing so ,the engines oil stayed so clean as the day you changed it ,,the tank was mounted just ahead of the steering wheel,he had some modifying of the hood,,and he removed the carb and mounted a injector body. Boy it made a nice tractor ,and it always started even in the coldest winters.-4IH pucker on it ,,0 below in Iowa,,Nice,he filled it from our big 1000 gal LP farm tank that had a extension fill nipple hose conversion on it as a qiuck attach,,the engine ran very smooth and winded,, nice ,,he mounted a 234 IH corn picker on it also,,he was able to run that pretty fast with the 1800 under it,,I couldn't keep up with wagon change outs,to keep him going ,,hauling in to the corn cribs and unloading. We ran a JD pull behind combine also off the Oliver 1800. I believe it's was a puller model JD 62,,the Oliver was hard on the combines PTO gearbox,,and PTO shier pins

Greetings from Davison Michigan! Great buy on the grinder mixer. Mine is exactly the same minus the sheller. My loading auger works exactly the same. Make sure you crawl underneath and service the mixing auger gearbox. Check the oil and grease the clutch for the discharge auger. We did the gearbox on the bottom of ours. It's a real pain. I'm not sure how you are supposed to get the shaft unhooked that goes to the unloading auger. We ended up cutting it and putting a coupling on it

@@jamieebersole6755 We welded a ring to the top of the mixing auger, then hooked a backhoe to it lifting the tires a few inches off the ground. Reached in with a torch and heated the splined coupling up cherry red. Sounded like a 30.06 going off when the splines let go and the auger shooting out of the top! Super sketchy!!

Nice old grinder-mixer...similar to the JD 400 unit we have. First move on getting it home was liberal use of grease and oil to be sure all was free. Hadn't been used in several years. Ground a little junk hay to attempt to clean old residue out of the inner workings. Price? We gave $400 for ours and quickly got a ROI doing feed at home, not having to wait in line at the local feed mill. Have used some salvage and new parts over the years to keep it going. A lot of the engineering looks similar to your NH.

Very nice machine. Our neighbor had a mixer mill with a sheller on it. It was a New Holland but I don’t know the model number. He used the sheller a lot for hog feed. I’ll say $600. Nice piece of history!!

You're cow's will love ground cob corn. I mix 100 pound of dried molasses per 1000 pounds of corn they eat it like candy. If you paid any less than 750 I consider you a thief !
