Now, this was a great interview. I remember as a kid in the 70s, we would get stoned and play Alice Cooper's Telephone is Ringing on 78. But, on a serious note, as an art major and guitar player, I always knew the importance of protecting your ears. In the 1980s, I joined the Army for college money and had no idea that I would suffer with permanent hearing loss. Hearing protection was always a big part of Army training. However, hearing protection does not stop the concussion from a 105mm howitzer. Half of what I used to hear was tinnitus. I was about to give up playing guitar, and then I received a new set of hearing aids from the VA. Unlike my old hearing aids that amplified everything, these are full-blown sound processors. I even have an app to control everything. Now I can hear things that the other band members can't. God bless Alice Cooper for his involvement with hearing awareness.
I'm 72 now, I saw Alice in 1971 in Denver when he was touring the Killer shows. He is still my all-time favorite Rock star. As a drummer, I've never played or covered any of his songs. Only with ear buds playing my kit to some of his old songs, mostly from the Killer album. I did go to his bar in Phoenix in about 2001 or 2. There was a special room I stayed in and enjoyed for over an hour. Never even got a drink.
I've interviewed several hundred music artists and performers--including Alice in 1989. Alice is one of the nicest, funniest, and most down to earth people on the planet. God speed Alice!
Good interview and discussion with two people who know what they are talking about. I helped on a Starkey mission in Peru in 2016 and it was very much as Alice describes. Those little 90 year-old grandmas were very gracious and got a kick out of an almost 60 year-old American white guy who spoke Spanish. And, most importantly, I received blessings by the sign of the Cross after hugs; a very powerful and moving experience I was very humbled and grateful for, and still am.
I slammed Bass, Guitar, Drums in bar bands all my life and was a Beatle's baby. Now I'm 70 years. I went through the same story. My wife of 50 years finally talked me into hearing aids and the hole world opened up. I was missing so much. The story of Alice is the same thing of what happened to me in my past. Now I can hear.
I had temporary tinnitus after concerts from my 20's. It would always disappear the next day until one day I went shooting. I only had earplugs and emerged with permanent tinnitus. I can't empathize how much hearing aids help. Nice interview. I have the Costco behind the ear ones and wish I could go to a small shop that has all the latest and greatest hearing instruments.
Very good interview, Dave & A.C. !! I picked up my first guitar in 1954. Played in bands since 1959. Met well over 100 famous people and musicians. Got married in 1968 and we're still together (56 years). My hearing loss started about 25 years ago, and am glad I found the Starkeys brand. About every 7 or 8 years, I advance to the latest tech - but nothing has made my tinnitus completely go away. Maybe the next pair that I get (March of 2025) will come closer.
Ya know, I can't believe you didn't mention the most important improvement hearing aids give a musician. I got hearing aids and I got all the high frequency hearing back again. I got to the point that I thought there was something wrong with my guitar. I would put new stings on and that would not help. I could no longer hear the high notes I would play. Hearing aids fixes that. That my friends, is the most important benefit a musician can receive.
Great to see Alice. Fan since Here's More Pretties For You. But in your interview, you should have also mentioned that a lot of the time, hearing aids HELP eliminate the ringing and buzzing caused by tinnitus. This is key. And yeah as someone mentioned, Costco hearing aids are great! I first went to Miracle Ear and their arrogance made me sick. I would not buy from them if they were the only hearing aids on earth.
Great interview! I’m retired and disabled at 68 years old. I started in High School and College playing then running sound for bands. This went on for about 20 years. I also worked in an Aluminum factory for 37 years. Both careers led to about a 50-60% hearing loss. I’ve also been a Professional Nikon Photographer since the 1970’s. In the beginning I shot major Rock Concerts like Led Zeppelin and The Rolling Stones with no hearing protection. I now for the last 21 years have been a Volunteer for the WVDNR and the OHDNR doing Bald Eagle nesting research. My wife talked me into going to have a hearing appointment with my local Audiologist. I ended up with the Starkey AI hearing aids. It was life changing. I can hear things that I had forgotten were all around me, like the small songbirds but more importantly, I now can hear everything that my very small Grandchildren say to me. I had forgotten what it was like to hear everything around me at normal volumes! Thank you Starkey for such a great product! Jay Smith👍❤️🎶🦻🏻😊🙏
Alice Cooper fan here since the mid 70's. My question - does Alice Cooper wear hearing aids on stage or does he stick with IEMs that are mixed by FOH guy that are tailored to his hearing loss? I'm a musician and I wear hearing aids - the HA's are not always so good on stage at band-stage volume. My fav AC song - No more mister nice guy.
This is all great but who is surprised by a 77 year old rocker having hearing loss? However, as someone who has to wear hearing aids everyday since being diagnosed with 2K and up high frequency hearing loss as the age of 58 it’s not the same. I have been a musician for 50+ years but NOT as the level of him or others his age. I understand genetics plays a role, nerve damage from Open Heart Surgery, being in the Navy for 8 years which we wore hearing protection though, and manufacturing for 40 years. This has affected my life so much that even after over a year of wearing them my musical passion that fed my soul is essentially over. The IEM idea is great in theory however my experience is all the highs that my hearing aids gave back to me are gone with them because you can’t wear both at the same time and most local bar band musicians EVEN older ones with hearing loss don’t wear them and they only work if EVERYONE in the band is wearing them! The PA’s at venues are brutally loud even at folk shows. Unfortunately hearing aids no matter what brand WILL NOT repair the damage that has been done. This video is great so more awareness to the music community is out there! Sorry to vent… Thanks for listening!
The first thing out of Coopers mouth was his dissatisfaction with battery life. I’ll never give up my 10 year old Halos that lasts 7 days on one battery. The Halo is smaller than any of your new versions too. No recharging required. The worst thing Starkey did was to go rechargeable. Causing us to lug around a separate charger. These Halos are excellent and extremely durable. BTW, I’m a musician.
Yep, this Boomer's right ear is WOUNDED! LOL - it's the "cone of silence" - I don't even know if a hearing aid would help me with it. And standing in front of ZZ Top's mountain of speakers back in '76 certainly did not help - my ears rang for three weeks afterward. I remember when the Rev. Billy G started hitting his lead notes, it felt like my body was being pierced with a sword! MAN, were they LOUD!!!
I have had the pleasure of enduring Minieres. Great fun! Still have continued to work at protecting my hearing, to the point of nagging the bandmates to keep an 'ear' on their volume..... of course, it also makes it easier to get a good mix on stage. So much easier for the soundman!
I'm going to start using Shakespeare as a verb, to mean the act of repurposing. I'm also going to reattribute it to me if someone is already using it that way.
Great content, as always! A bit off-topic, but I wanted to ask: My OKX wallet holds some USDT, and I have the seed phrase. (alarm fetch churn bridge exercise tape speak race clerk couch crater letter). Could you explain how to move them to Binance?
Alice is truly a deeply committed Christian.Search out his interviews addressing this and listen to his recent albums like The Last Temptation and Brutal Planet. His songs now have solid faith based lyrics that are there to hear if you’ve got ears.Do the research and don’t be a doubting Thomas.😊
Respect your opinion but Alice's dad was a Pastor, his grandfather an Evangelist and his wife's dad was a Pastor. It is because of Alice's faith that he was able to overcome a serious drinking and Cocaine addiction for good in the early 80's
Accepting Jesus is a personal transformation. God does not want robots or any cosmic arm-twisting. Obviously, you must be willing to admit you are a sinner in need of salvation. We are full of pride and it’s hard to bring ourselves to admit we are in need of saving. Even after you accept Jesus as Lord and Savior, you will still wrestle with sin. The difference is your soul is with God, not against Him.

New album hint by Alice. Really good interview!
Love this conversation between Alice and Dr. Fabry!

My main man always. I'm going to have "I am Made of You" at my funeral. Love this man and so glad he is a professing Christian.

That Alice...what a great guy.
99.9 % of guys are great guys. So?
You rock, @AliceCooper!

EXCELLENT episode, Dr. Fabry and Alice!
I've love Alice Cooper from the 60s. Great guy.
So cool on several levels!!! Thank you for sharing.

Going to see Alice tonight at the Christmas Pudding show

You should see what the other one is 😂yeah I get it 👏👏👏
you don't have time to charge the hearing aids because you don't charge overnight as you are a vampire!
Hearing Loss can happen to anyone but only women bleed.
Huh?
I applaud AC for just about everything he does but you lose me when "christian" enters the conversation...

Total clickbait. I’m a big AC FAN but the heading is misleading. More of a historical documentary rather than a discussion on hearing loss. WTF?
You obviously didn’t listen…he talks about them plenty, starting at 14:00
