  • Adam Pearson is on a mission to explore disability hate crime - to find out why it goes under-reported, under-recorded and under people's radar. In this documentary, Adam challenges people into questioning their attitudes towards disability and disfigurement, to uncover the roots of the issue.
Adam has neurofibromatosis type 1, a condition that causes benign tumours to grow on nerve endings - in his case, on his face. He is disfigured and disabled and has experienced disability hate crime first-hand, like a number of his friends, some of whom he meets with in the film. Their stories may differ, but their disability as the motivating factor is constant.
Just days into his investigation, Adam becomes the target of some grossly offensive online hate speech. While this isn't unusual for him, for the first time Adam decides to take action, reporting it to the police - with some unexpected outcomes.
Undeterred, he looks to understand the laws specific to disability hate crime, and finds that a mixture of ignorance and inequalities mean that these crimes often don't make it to our courts, or are sentenced less severely than other hate crimes when they do.
Adam looks to uncover what attitudes and influences may be causing people to commit disability hate crime in the first place, questioning whether the portrayal of disfigurement and disability in the media, for example, could be leading us to associate them with being 'the bad guys'.
With help from Miles Hewstone, professor of social psychology at the University of Oxford, Adam conducts an experiment measuring peoples' innate prejudice towards disfigurement that gives some shocking results, and leads him to question if he alone can hope to affect a change - and if so, how?

Adam, thanks for this production. While my disability isn't visible, I deal with a lot of discrimination. I have a mild traumatic brain injury from an electrical accident, and I've found out just how cruel some people can be.
It's sad that grown adults would behave in such a terrible manner when they encounter someone with a disability.

SNUFALUFAGUS 3000 What? I do try my best to ignore disabled people. When you're out in public you do, for the most part, ignore everyone. You might smile at someone you make eye contact with, or mumble an apology as you brush by them, but you do mostly just ignore people. I know people with disibilities get starred at all the time. Everywhere they go, they know they're being watched. I had very obvious, very visible stitches on the side of the face once, and being watched by strangers just gets exhausting. I always felt relieved when the people around me would just ignore me, just like anyone else.

I have no clue how someone's physical appearance can make you wanna hurt them so much. I really don't get it. I simply don't understand what happens in peoples brains that hate these people for their appearance. If it's not tribalism, if they look too different to remind them of someone who did them wrong, if it's not hatred of weakness, then what is it? I really, even when I try to think every possible reason to instinctively hate someone that I can, can't understand why you'd hate disfigured or disabled people

I think it's partly because people love to find any excuse to feel better about their own insecurities. When they see another person who looks unconventional or is physically impaired they gain a kind of sick satisfaction that their own insecurities or physical unattractiveness can be finally outweighed by someone else, so they strive to bring more attention to it and to mock it.

He's a cool dude, people could easily get over his physical disability because his social skills are great. The issue is the bullying in schools and growing up all the way to bullying as adult destorys peoples' social skills. People JUDGE based on physical attributes first, that is the sad truth. If the person doesn't have the social skills to get past that physical judgement then there will be issues.
The whole youtube segment is completely wrong though. UA-cam does not allow "content" that violates those policies. In this comment section you are literally invincible and can say whatever you want, anonymously.

When I was healthy I took the picture you see now. Since dropping below 95LBS at nearly 6 feet tall my body has been eating itself to stay alive.
After five years of slowly starving to death ( due to illness and multiple surgeries, not diet) I have had my eye lashes, eye brows, 1/4th of my teeth fall out. I have lost all my body fat and my body mass index ( BMI) is 2. That means less than 2% of my body weight is fat. I fit in boys 3x under wear at 47. The
The hardest part of being ill is having to go out into the public eye.
I have been rudely kicked out of stores and restaurants because some fat guy/ woman (who can afford to skip a weeks worth of meals) lost his appetite due to my being grossly under weight!!!
The very worst however is when the store staff follow me around and examine everything I touch! Wiping my germs off everything! As if cancer is contagious!!! Some even go out of their way to embarrass me and treat me like a thief even though I have not been charged or ever taken anything.
The rudeness of strangers who judge me based on what they think they know about me before ever meeting me and their need to share their judgemental insight with me to further ruin my day hurts.
Do you people really think we do this to ourselves on purpose?
Stop living in fear of what you don't understand and start living with love and compassion for others. Be the change you want to see in the world around you. Live in love
Respect all life for it is sacred.

It took me until shortly after I started college when I realized why my mom snapped at me when I was provided with a specific payment method for attending college as an individual with that particular diagnosis, much to my dismay, as being placed there required exposure to some more individuals I'd feel uncomfortable around, much to my dismay. Of course, this was around the same time when I realized why I had to go through those experiences, since Asperger Syndrome is a legal diagnosis, albeit an invisible one. I was quite dumbfounded when I realized the importance of inner beauty, which I tend to believe might be sugary sweet behavior, if not diabetes-inducing, to the point where I felt ashamed for not being able to fully understand and learn that important lesson when I was younger.

I'm legally blind and use a cane, biggest problem I've had is with people being skeptical, telling me they don't think I'm 'really blind' because I get around so well. Been called a liar from passing vehicles. I don't typically care what people think, I need my cane and am not going to stop using it, it's none of their business, but it's difficult when you're forced to interact with people who think they're experts on disabilities. I just hope people can understand that there are many disabilities out there and many gray areas, leave diagnosis to the professionals, reserve your judgements, and just don't worry about it. That's all anyone can do.

Legally blind means your vision is bad enough to be considered blind by legal definition, it can be anywhere from vlow vision to completely blind. In my case, I have a little bit of sight left after cateract surgery and glaucoma. In the case of blind people (I know a fully blind person who bought graphics from me online), they use Voiceover (for Mac computers, it's built in) or Kurzweil (for Windows) text to speak software. Voiceover is also on iPhones under the accessibility preferences. If you have it you can try it out for yourself, super handy when I have bad days (eyesight is worse sometimes and I can't read on my own so I turn it on and it speaks).

+john kindon (kinkong) He is not a hero for going on camera at all, did you actually watch this video? That is the face he wakes up to everyday, it's odd to most people because it's unusual. He knows how he looks, he didn't do this because of that. He did this to draw attention to the treatment of disabled people in general. He is a hero because he is helping others, it has nothing to do with his disfigurement other than that he has a deeper understanding of that kind of bias than most people do. He is not brave for allowing a camera take his picture, as if he should be cowering in a cave, but brave because he stands up for those who he knows are the silent victims. I think the point he would most like to see understood about himself is simply that he is a man, not a disfigured face. He doesn't ask for sympathy or special treatment, just humanity. I am sorry I know you mean the best, but its deeper than the surface.

What i was trying to convey is what you have just said as i am disabled as well being stuck in a wheel chair and mobility scooter with spinal problems with people stepping over me like i was not there and ignore me and speak to the guy who is pushing me as if i'm some dumb mute,
so when i look at a disabled person or so called normal person all i see is a human being no more no less what ever persuasion colour or creed and as society is today when looks are so important and people have become so shallow i am not to good in wording things correctly as the morphine i am on does affect the way i type and speak which tends not to come out right i hope i got that across this time lol.

Is it just me or does Lucas seem to be an especially bright individual? Fantastic video! My daughter, who has a very severe case of schizencephaly, often gets long odd looks in public, my daughter looks like a normal child as far as proportions so people often misunderstand her level of disability ... I remember taking her to the mall and she was in pain and crying so I took her out of her wheel chair and held her... the looks I got were... disgusting. People blatantly walking in front of us and staring as if I had no right to bring her into a public space! Well I calmed her down and we finished our shopping, admittedly I was rattled, we hurried and left as soon as possible. I dont bring her to the mall these days because she can feel my tension and becomes upset if people focus on her like that, she cant see or speak but she knows. Anyway, I wish there were more video's like these, wonderful message, thank you.

It's interesting to note, around 20 minutes into the video, where you point out the estimated vs recorded hate crimes, it's disturbing how many overall hate crimes occur and go unrecorded. A quick calculation from your numbers show 76% of racial crimes go unreported, 88% of sexual orientation, and 91% of disability. Similarly, approximately 80% of rapes go unreported. People seem to fear making the move to report, or as the guy in the bar assault said, they don't think it's worth it because they are so accustomed to such treatment. Maybe they don't expect to be taken seriously, maybe they don't expect to be believed. Or maybe, worst of all, they think they deserved it or asked for it. It really is a societal problem that takes time and action to make any change. So thank you to Adam for making this and starting the conversation.

    • @cassie3037
      @cassie3037 8 років тому +3

Another point is that it is incredibly hard, in some cases impossible, to actually impose any sort of legislation on the internet. The only hate crimes that get attention are those involving people with high public exposure, like celebrities or politicians. It is a crime that comes with little fear of punishment, because it is so easy to hide behind usernames with privacy restrictions. Investigation takes a lot more work than the typical crime, and can get shoved to the back for more pressing cases where a concrete threat is prevalent. Not to mention there are millions of people on the internet, and multi-millions of hate speech comments. Idk if it's physically possible to implement legislation on that scale...

There are a lot of "-isms", and I don't blame people for not knowing what this perticular word means. What I think is most important, though, is that people learn to respect others no matter what the term of not doing so is called.
It is in human nature to be curious, but you don't have to be an arse.
Also, I think it's perfectly understandable that individuals with disabilities want to be left alone like anyone else. They might not want to be asked questions about their appearance when going grocery shopping, for example.

I don't have a disability, but I was called all kinds of names for having a large nose once I hit puberty. On top of that problem, I have Scolioses. So I was abused by fellas first by name calling, and later by using me, and losing me. Now things have changed for me. I had my nose fixed, and I stand as straight as I can after much exercise and remaining flexible. I guess I am a very strong person, because I moved forward in life, and was able to compensate my problems. You don't have to be declared disabled to actually feel it. Well, I felt it only because people claimed my ugly, not me. I really like me. Now I'm a mother of three, married to a pretty good guy, and I deal with my back issues. Still not disabled.

There is a big difference between starring and committing a hate crime or being mean/rude to someone. We are pattern seeking creatures and we make judgements based off of what we experience. People stare, doesnt mean they are bad people and unfortunately for you, you are unique and stand out. I can get anxious if I overthink about people staring at me but it certainly does not give me the right to deny them their right of sight. I feel like this is also a tactic used by bullies or mean people. "What are you looking at?" sort of shit.

I agree that hate comments get posted everywhere, but the system should be able to take care of a larger portion of them so people who have to encounter that sort of thing over and over again don't have to as often. It's obvious that all youtube does is check the reported comments for trigger words, and as the comment didn't meet the usual requirements it was 'ok', even though it literally suggests another human being to be burned to death. Such a powerful company as UA-cam can be expected to hire a handful of people to actually READ reported content.

I didn't even know why (even though I didn't have any disfigurements) that I was being bullied and I still don't know why. I kept asking myself, is my head too small or big, are my cheeks too puffy, am I just not enough for anyone? Not even for friends. Still thinking this way, I want to find out why I'm still being bullied.

I live with debilitating chronic pain as a result from a motor vehicle accident. I rately leave my home because it's so taxing & painful. I get stares & hateful comments when I use handicapped parking. It's really upsetting. I fight depression daily as a result of my immobility. I have 2 medical post graduate degrees but I'm unable to practice. All because a person was too lazy to tie down their truck load. I'm just a shell of whom I used to be. 😢

It's difficult to know where to draw the line with free speech, I don't understand how anybody could make such horrible comments. Maybe the solution is to better educate people on the effects of their abusive words rather than to try and remove what seems almost endless. Honestly though it just makes you feel sick that people say and do these things.

I think the messages behind the video were good, but it shouldn't have been centered around that one hateful comment. It just hurts the video. It's almost as if he has never been on the internet before. The N word is used all the time in a derogatory way, and youtube rarely does anything because there are millions of videos and that would be too difficult. The comment is obviously mean, but its extremely tame compared to most comment sections. If the comment was saying "I'm going to go to your house and kill you you disfigured fuck" then that should definitely be taken down. But this weak troll comment is just so small compared to other things that hurt disabled people.

There are videos saying the Holocaust wasn't real on youtube, and have been for years. And I have a hard time believing that there was not one person who reported those, but they're still there.

The worst kind of bullying is against people who can't fight back, and for things that are out of their control such as this. Like it's one thing to make fun of a fat person, but making fun of disabled people or someone's (facial) appearance is pure mean because it's out of their control.

As much as I understand the message the documentary is trying to present (in relation to Google in particular) you have to understand that you're dealing with a company based in America where "freedom of speech" is one of our most highly touted rights. Unless the comment is directed at you in a way that would put you in danger in the future then it's hard for the police or any company to justify going after an individual. People say heinous things on the internet to each other whether or not it's driven by racism disablism or any other kind of prejudice.

NF1 is disfigurement, but not defined as a disability though, which negates the whole argument of the video. It's unfortunate that he has been a target of abuse and bullying, but I don't fully agree that it's a hate crime. A disability is being blind, deaf, in a wheelchair and unable to walk etc.

I have normal hearing, but I have deaf friends. Once when I was out with several of them, and using sign language, a young woman came up to me, grabbed my shoulder, and screamed at the top of her lungs right in my ear. She thought it was a hilarious joke to mock a deaf person. Unfortunately, I'm not deaf, and it was very painful. I was shocked and said something, and she again laughed, and said "you talk real good for a deaf girl." Unfortunately, my friends were walking ahead of me, and of course they didn't hear her scream or see the altercation. This was before cell phones so I couldn't call the police right away, and unfortunately there were no other witnesses, so they couldn't do anything. People who would mistreat Adam Pearson or others with a disability are the ones with a real disability of empathy and humanity.

  • @Saragato
    @Saragato 4 роки тому +1

I've been witness to Disablism since I was a young child. While I'm not pinning Christians as bad, I attended a church up to the age of 12 that let a lot of harassment slide, and one of the worst cases was against a young man who was mentally disabled because his birth mother did drugs while pregnant with him. He was very outgoing and friendly, but adults ignored him and children bullied him with names and throwing things at him. Kids wouldn't want to sit next to him on a pew, claiming he stunk or had germs because he drooled a lot and chewed on one hand. He had an older brother who tried to protect him, but because of the age gap was not always there. He was one of the sweetest people I ever knew.
I know it's more or less human condition to be wary or even afraid of those that do not look the same as others, but we really need to stop treating them like they're an alien race or a sideshow attraction set free on the streets.
