The Ugly Face of Disability Hate Crime - BBC Documentary
Вставка
- Опубліковано 8 вер 2024
- Adam Pearson is on a mission to explore disability hate crime - to find out why it goes under-reported, under-recorded and under people's radar. In this documentary, Adam challenges people into questioning their attitudes towards disability and disfigurement, to uncover the roots of the issue.
Adam has neurofibromatosis type 1, a condition that causes benign tumours to grow on nerve endings - in his case, on his face. He is disfigured and disabled and has experienced disability hate crime first-hand, like a number of his friends, some of whom he meets with in the film. Their stories may differ, but their disability as the motivating factor is constant.
Just days into his investigation, Adam becomes the target of some grossly offensive online hate speech. While this isn't unusual for him, for the first time Adam decides to take action, reporting it to the police - with some unexpected outcomes.
Undeterred, he looks to understand the laws specific to disability hate crime, and finds that a mixture of ignorance and inequalities mean that these crimes often don't make it to our courts, or are sentenced less severely than other hate crimes when they do.
Adam looks to uncover what attitudes and influences may be causing people to commit disability hate crime in the first place, questioning whether the portrayal of disfigurement and disability in the media, for example, could be leading us to associate them with being 'the bad guys'.
With help from Miles Hewstone, professor of social psychology at the University of Oxford, Adam conducts an experiment measuring peoples' innate prejudice towards disfigurement that gives some shocking results, and leads him to question if he alone can hope to affect a change - and if so, how?

Adam, thanks for this production. While my disability isn't visible, I deal with a lot of discrimination. I have a mild traumatic brain injury from an electrical accident, and I've found out just how cruel some people can be.
It's sad that grown adults would behave in such a terrible manner when they encounter someone with a disability.
Youre incorrect.
Jolls Not necessarily. I'm considered to be disabled because of a speech problem, but you wouldn't guess until I start talking and I sound half my age.
Don't despair. These grown adults are assholes. There are a lot of assholes around but there is also a lot of good people around.
What kind of "human beings" terrorise someone who already has a disability?! What were these people taught at home? Despicable!
people are dicks to everyone..
Kids can be cruel and stupid. I know I was a real douche bag :(
soffy2002 they are also not taught in school about these conditions. Biology class needs to include real teaching about real conditions.
Apparently you grew up. Good for you.
watchgoose My mom taught me that if I made fun of people with disabilities, I would either become disabled or have a child who is. I was around five years old and I never forgot it.
his face is quite shocking when you see him at first, but you need to stop and realize that he's just a human being and he's still a nice guy.
Pretty much how I reacted too.
Jamie Jared yeah. I think if someone asked me when the freakshow was, I'd ask why, and say „you can't afford tickets anyway.”
yeah I mean I would honestly be shocked at first and try to maybe figure out if it's real and blink a few times, but then I would try to treat him as nicely as possible
I truthfully have much more troubles dealing with the mentally handicapped; I am not mean but I don't know how to deal with their behavior and so I get anxious.
Jamie Jared dude why even mention that about his face?
We're all fucking dust soon enough anyway. Enjoy it while it lasts.
I always try my best to completely ignore disabled people when I just see them in public. Just because I feel like it must be so damn tiring to always be stared at.
saying you try your best to ignore them sounds really ignorant they're just people treat them how you treat other people omfg
SNUFALUFAGUS 3000 Exactly. I don't go out of my way to stare at other people. You don't look at other people like their spectacles. You don't give them a second look.
Sarah Clark then why you say you always try your best to ignore them??? just dont like how difficult is it for you
SNUFALUFAGUS 3000 What? I do try my best to ignore disabled people. When you're out in public you do, for the most part, ignore everyone. You might smile at someone you make eye contact with, or mumble an apology as you brush by them, but you do mostly just ignore people. I know people with disibilities get starred at all the time. Everywhere they go, they know they're being watched. I had very obvious, very visible stitches on the side of the face once, and being watched by strangers just gets exhausting. I always felt relieved when the people around me would just ignore me, just like anyone else.
Sarah Clark yeah I never look at them cause I feel like they will think I'm looking at them because they are disabled lol
Adam honestly has such a bomb personality that I completely forgot about his disability for most of the documentary. Just goes to show that all the people who are mean to him are missing out on the opportunity to have a really kickass friendship with him.
B ly You have to have a good personality when you look like that
I agree, he seems so cool. I stopped even noticing his appearance after 5 mins.
***** Whoa!!!!! That's out of line.
tgideon if someone is racist towards you, do you like it..how about if they said you need a personality due to your looks..seriously ugly inside chick..
@tgdieon -you must know that, right? Except, you are ugly inside out so no wonder you are bitter and miserable little piece of shite.
The rude comments and pointing and staring are so infantile and mean-spirited.. My parents raised me not to treat people that way. I wish more people were brought up to respect others.
I agree sadly some people aren't educated very well
me too
I know right he may look different but everyone doesn't look alike and he's still a person
Obviously, he is a person. :) The fact that you even need to mention that proves the way society looks at people with disabilities.
***** Whilst there is a difference I would say that they are treated in a similar fashion.
I have no clue how someone's physical appearance can make you wanna hurt them so much. I really don't get it. I simply don't understand what happens in peoples brains that hate these people for their appearance. If it's not tribalism, if they look too different to remind them of someone who did them wrong, if it's not hatred of weakness, then what is it? I really, even when I try to think every possible reason to instinctively hate someone that I can, can't understand why you'd hate disfigured or disabled people
You are a good person
Its gard to imagine being dumber than you are...so we cant ever really underatand stupid thought process as competent humans
I think it's partly because people love to find any excuse to feel better about their own insecurities. When they see another person who looks unconventional or is physically impaired they gain a kind of sick satisfaction that their own insecurities or physical unattractiveness can be finally outweighed by someone else, so they strive to bring more attention to it and to mock it.
+Jaegar Ultima Wat..
Jaegar Ultima The fuck is going on in that head of yours, where did I ever make fun of people with deformities?
He lives in my area and I see him all the time, nice bloke.
+Freddie Hawkins He's GREAT! If ya see him, ask him to peek at his UA-cam comments. My son has Down syndrome, we are fighting for education in America too! I think he's a man made in the image and likeness of God, and I swear I find Adam beautiful! I can also see completely past the tumors, although I like him with them better. Not patronizing, I WELL understand the stares and teasing..
+Freddy Hawkins, What is a bloke?
A gentleman/friend
Bloke = guy
Ayyy Croydon
I too am disabled, yet mine is an "invisable disablity" which comes with its own set of unique issues. Adam is an awesome individual. This was a great documentary. Very thorough! And wow, he's hysterical. God bless you Adam!!!
That lady literally asked the dude without legs to pop a wheelie and stand up. That is nuts
I can't believe the way that girl acted towards the vet using a wheelchair.. "ooo do a wheelie!" ok at first i thought it sounded dumb, but maybe she's trying to make light of the situation? (albeit in a disrespectful way) Than she proceeds to repeatedly ask him "why are you sitting in a chair? can you not walk or something? try walking, stand up, you should just stand up and see if you can walk! So can you walk? show me! So i still don't get it....why are you siting down? Can you walk or not?" I mean seriously...has she genuinely never seen a person in a wheelchair? uuugh that was painful to watch...
she was drunk
I wanted to bitch slap her. Tf!?
NymphetaminexXxGrrrl she's a bimbo and got pwn3d by the vet hard.
ziyad, drunk AND stupid & rude!
the chair dude should have asked her if he could eat her tasty snatch
Just because somebody does not appeal to you aesthetically does not mean you should treat them with disrespect. What some of these people have gone through is disgusting. They def should take self-defense classes because if someone lays a finger on them or behaves in a way that is unwarranted towards them, then they have every right to lay them the fuck out.
Ever heard the story of "The Ugly Duckling?"
What exactly is his disability? Just having an ugly face? Calling his disfigurement a disability is an insult to those with true disabilities such as being blind, deaf, in a wheelchair etc. In fact in the UK where he lives.. his condition Neurofibromatosis (NF) Type 1 is not recognized as a disability per se.
so he should be hated and insulted right?
+bagh hazarika No, but him getting insulted or hated is not a hate crime.
Yes it is. If you hurt someone out of hate, it's a hatecrime no matter what the victim is like, gay, disabled, just a guy in the street you want as a punching back. So Ingen Ting, what you say is bull.
He's a cool dude, people could easily get over his physical disability because his social skills are great. The issue is the bullying in schools and growing up all the way to bullying as adult destorys peoples' social skills. People JUDGE based on physical attributes first, that is the sad truth. If the person doesn't have the social skills to get past that physical judgement then there will be issues.
The whole youtube segment is completely wrong though. UA-cam does not allow "content" that violates those policies. In this comment section you are literally invincible and can say whatever you want, anonymously.
+mad0uche That and they're frequently stuck in special ed classes, even when they have no learning disabilities, so they have a harder time learning to socialize.
+mad0uche --- people could easily get over his physical disability because his social skills are great. - LOL ...the guy is discriminated because he has a very ugly face and people especially women are shallow as fuck
+mad0uche Lol do you seriously believe that a girl could get over his disability because of his social skills?
+Thonis Sifu Hey, quit being sexist.
I have a friend who also has one of those physical disabilities. She looks "squat" but it's not dwarfism.
And guess what? She can't get a guy.
Aubren Lewis yeah average or above average guy
Wow. I remember seeing this guy walk past me in Croydon. I was shocked and thought he had elephantiasis. I never would've reacted like some of these people. Incredible seeing him again and getting to know the man behind the disfigurement. Much respect to him and others like him.
Cup O Tea yea much respect for that kind man, you might be shocked and grossed out which is what most people will feel when they see him for the first time, but they need to get to know him better and treat him like another fellow lad
He does unfortunately takes himself way too seriously and albeit he think he is funny, he is not. If he embraced his condition then he wouldn't care if people stared. You don't have right not to be offended unfortunately. He could instead actually try for a proper movie career.. not necessarily as a monster, but he could seriously be great in a Hunchback of Notre-Dame movie as Quasimodo, or in a remake of the classic movie "The Elephant Man".
@@cakestalker are u seriously saying he doesnt have a right to be affended by people staring and makin comments? If someone said something offensive to u im guessing u would be okay with it? Doubt it.
@UC8VfGw-c2MtZEFQ38ygPFDg you're so dumb
I mean, it's okay to be shocked, it's not okay to interfere with their life.
When I was healthy I took the picture you see now. Since dropping below 95LBS at nearly 6 feet tall my body has been eating itself to stay alive.
After five years of slowly starving to death ( due to illness and multiple surgeries, not diet) I have had my eye lashes, eye brows, 1/4th of my teeth fall out. I have lost all my body fat and my body mass index ( BMI) is 2. That means less than 2% of my body weight is fat. I fit in boys 3x under wear at 47. The
The hardest part of being ill is having to go out into the public eye.
I have been rudely kicked out of stores and restaurants because some fat guy/ woman (who can afford to skip a weeks worth of meals) lost his appetite due to my being grossly under weight!!!
The very worst however is when the store staff follow me around and examine everything I touch! Wiping my germs off everything! As if cancer is contagious!!! Some even go out of their way to embarrass me and treat me like a thief even though I have not been charged or ever taken anything.
The rudeness of strangers who judge me based on what they think they know about me before ever meeting me and their need to share their judgemental insight with me to further ruin my day hurts.
Do you people really think we do this to ourselves on purpose?
Stop living in fear of what you don't understand and start living with love and compassion for others. Be the change you want to see in the world around you. Live in love
Respect all life for it is sacred.
c.a. greene been through it's worst being a guy in London always I got to show them that yeah I lost the weight but when my eyes they tell Papi is still there
I'm so sorry you've had to endure that kind of behavior. It's not your fault whatsoever, but just because you know that doesn't make awful behavior less hurtful. It says so much about the people you encounter and their own fear/insecurities than it says about you though, and I hope you know that no one deserves being treated that way. I hope you're doing okay despite the profoundly challenging circumstances you're in.
I felt sympathetic towards you until you displayed the same harmful attitude by cussing out overweight people.
It completely contradicted the entire point of your post.
What a shame
@@mayflower2158 until I was sick I WAS THAT OVERWEIGHT PERSON I SPEAK OF, only difference is I didn't shame anyone for being thin.
Have you any idea what it is like to be asked to leave a restaurant over 150 times because someone who could miss a meal or two doesn't feel comfortable eating 15 servings in front of my veiw because I'm thin???? They do this from fear of being judged - so instead they should have the right to judge me based on my outer appearance and I should feel cruel or insensitive when I show anger towards them???
I also get sat between the 2 fattest people on every flight I take.
I never get to sit in my own seat, the o e on my ticket, nope.
As soon as the stuart see me they instantly pull me aside, telling me they have two big fat people that won't fit in their seats, they refuse to buy a bigger seat, and so because I am the tiniest person width wise on the flight I'm gonna share my cattle car seat with these two rude fat people. ( both well over 400 lbs and shouldn't be flying cattle car)
I don't get a refund. No one helped pay for my seat.
Yet every time I fly, and I used to fly often to treatment, I have someone else's fat in my lap and squeezing me between them while they sweat like pigs all over me. No sorry, no embarrassment for eating their way into gross obesity and expecting me to be crushed beneath them...my prejudices are born of contempt for their behavior, not because they are fat.
And yes it was well over 150 times in nine years I had been asked to leave restaurants- even the empress hotel asked me to leave on mother's day while I was at high tea with my two sons and their father was the manager of the cigar shop at the time!!! We were dressed well- so the only reason is usually the same, someone couldn't eat their dinner because my medical pole or my weight caused them to loose their appetite.
People give me money on the street as I pass by and tell me to eat something!!! That's how thin I am...and not by choice
I use what energy I have left to run a charity for homeless youth - gives me something to do besides pity myself
I hate how cruel people can be, especially over things that can't be controlled. I'm thankful for this video. He and all disabled people have my prayers and well wishes.
+NANI SORE ღ I sadly had that problem growing up as a girly female Aspie with the numerous experiences I had to go through growing up. It took me until shortly after I started college when I realized why my mom snapped at me when I was provided with a specific payment method for attending college as an individual with that particular diagnosis, much to my dismay, as being placed there required exposure to some more individuals I'd feel uncomfortable around, much to my dismay. Of course, this was around the same time when I realized why I had to go through those experiences, since Asperger Syndrome is a legal diagnosis, albeit an invisible one. I was quite dumbfounded when I realized the importance of inner beauty, which I tend to believe might be sugary sweet behavior, if not diabetes-inducing, to the point where I felt ashamed for not being able to fully understand and learn that important lesson when I was younger.
+Sara Houck hey Sara you pretty
Yeah. :/
Unfortunately, it's inevitable though
Tiffani Real God bless you Tiffani. Agree 100%.
Thank you for educating me on this Adam!
welcome
I'm legally blind and use a cane, biggest problem I've had is with people being skeptical, telling me they don't think I'm 'really blind' because I get around so well. Been called a liar from passing vehicles. I don't typically care what people think, I need my cane and am not going to stop using it, it's none of their business, but it's difficult when you're forced to interact with people who think they're experts on disabilities. I just hope people can understand that there are many disabilities out there and many gray areas, leave diagnosis to the professionals, reserve your judgements, and just don't worry about it. That's all anyone can do.
How tf did you type then😂
Legally blind means your vision is bad enough to be considered blind by legal definition, it can be anywhere from vlow vision to completely blind. In my case, I have a little bit of sight left after cateract surgery and glaucoma. In the case of blind people (I know a fully blind person who bought graphics from me online), they use Voiceover (for Mac computers, it's built in) or Kurzweil (for Windows) text to speak software. Voiceover is also on iPhones under the accessibility preferences. If you have it you can try it out for yourself, super handy when I have bad days (eyesight is worse sometimes and I can't read on my own so I turn it on and it speaks).
@@jconx1680 Not them, but blind people can type by using special keyboards, speech software and using accessiblity features on computers.
I have the same condition as Adam, NF type 1, and honestly, it's great to see another person with the condition online :3
I’m nf1 to
I have complex mental health and physical health conditions and abuse was shouted at me in the street I was pushed and spat at and intimidated
I would like to say thank you to this gentleman for standing up for us disabled individuals who do not have a voice or who are silenced by their disability
Thank you Sir
Put yourself in Adams place could you put yourself on tv and do a documentary on disfigurement The mans a hero .
Of course! Abiding by that phrase is highly important to feel someone else's heart other than your own! I feel pretty damn lucky to have learned that lesson the hard way around the time I was provided with my payment method for attending college as an Aspie!
A LEGEND!!
+john kindon (kinkong) He is not a hero for going on camera at all, did you actually watch this video? That is the face he wakes up to everyday, it's odd to most people because it's unusual. He knows how he looks, he didn't do this because of that. He did this to draw attention to the treatment of disabled people in general. He is a hero because he is helping others, it has nothing to do with his disfigurement other than that he has a deeper understanding of that kind of bias than most people do. He is not brave for allowing a camera take his picture, as if he should be cowering in a cave, but brave because he stands up for those who he knows are the silent victims. I think the point he would most like to see understood about himself is simply that he is a man, not a disfigured face. He doesn't ask for sympathy or special treatment, just humanity. I am sorry I know you mean the best, but its deeper than the surface.
What i was trying to convey is what you have just said as i am disabled as well being stuck in a wheel chair and mobility scooter with spinal problems with people stepping over me like i was not there and ignore me and speak to the guy who is pushing me as if i'm some dumb mute,
so when i look at a disabled person or so called normal person all i see is a human being no more no less what ever persuasion colour or creed and as society is today when looks are so important and people have become so shallow i am not to good in wording things correctly as the morphine i am on does affect the way i type and speak which tends not to come out right i hope i got that across this time lol.
john kindon IKR? It's a shame no one has x-ray vision to look into each other's hearts.
I love that the mum talks about headbutting the doctor.
ah he arrogance of doctors, so many incompetents about in the health services. i know, I've come across a few who are us winging it through the system.
Yes EXACTLY! The doctor who didn't analysed adam properly should take full responsibility on what has happen to adam. If at that time he found out earlier i think adam can be saved.
Excuse the pun !
Nobody deserves this.
What a tough man is this Adam, its lovely to know there are people like this in the world.A calm & patient gentleman.
What an insightful, intelligent, compassionate and courageous man you are, Adam Pearson. Thank God for you.
I haven't watched this yet, but I think simply being exposed to different kinds of disabilities is helpful for people. People fear and hate what they don't understand.
This guy has a great attitude and personality. I know that just sounds like something you say when someone's disfigured/disabled but he really does. Hope he's doing well, I can't imagine how hard it would be. Everyone would treat you like a monster.
I like this guy. he is funny as hell. its freaking amazing how in this day and age, that people can be so rude and cruel. it makes me sick
Wait, so if the disabled were gay, the system would protect them. That's all I got from that judge. That is messed up completely.
your video is inspiring me. first of all let me say that I have delt with people giving me "the stares" and "the looks". people place 100% of their thought about you in the first couple seconds of looking at your face. this disgusts me. People are not how they look, they are who they are. your video has given me the confidence to make it through my day. I can't thank you enough
+Kokujin Sensei Desu me too , i had a very low self esteem .
Kokujin Sensei Desu people judge on how they see you, physically. As much as I wish this ideology would die, it's still gonna be that way
Its quite rude to just go up so someone you dont know and be like "what happened? Can you see? Can you walk?" Maybe the disabled person doesnt want to talk about it. If you engage in a conversation with that person, and it goes smoothly, maybe you can ask "im sorry, im very curious. Can I ask why you are in a wheelchair?"
The bullies are weak
Just because people are unfamiliar with the term 'disableism', doesn't mean they are unaware of the discrimination against the disabled.
I've never heard of such an attitude, let alone the term. I've been disabled & in a wheelchair since early childhood, & I've never come across this kind of treatment. I'm amazed. And appalled that the police wouldn't take it seriously.
I think the point was to highlight the fact that the discussion just isn't happening as widely as the discussions on racism, sexism, etc.
The term is now ‘ableism’, as the people who attack disabled people are clearly favouring people who are physically more able to do certain things than disabled people.
Thank you! I'm disabled and living in Germany. I have always just let things go, when someone is hostile towards me or spits hate speech due to my disability. From now on, I'll do something about it, even if that's just making it known. Great video, thank you for uploading this.
The police should stop wasting it time on car parking fees, and instead go help these people. Its a huge huge shame these people do not get the help they need. And politicians.. go do your work!
Adam Pearson is an inspiration and brave
I don't want to watch this not because of how he looks but it's because of the way people treat him. It's really hard to listen what he went through.
Yeah, but at the end you walk away with a smile of your face - he is very funny and helps restore your faith in humanity
i hate the comments people made about needing a thicker skin- he made a valid comment about the comparisons how the companies don't treat the threats with any substance. thosevwith disabilities have at time less ability to fight back.
Its a shame we as humans disrepsect each other espically those with disabilities; It boils down to the fear and the unknow, just get to know these individuals.
I think Adam is very brave in being so public with his own life to bring these issues to light. Although I don't understand why he is choosing to focus on UA-cam comments and trolls, when there are surely other more pressing issues affecting the disabled community with regards to violence and disablism.
Sadly, not everyone has X-ray vision to look into each other's hearts.
Stranger: asks him his name, tells him he loves him and hugs him
Adam- Being disabled makes me public property. Strangers hug me and patronize me
Yea that throws me off. I understand his feelings towards other people disrespecting or harassing him but that guy was sweet and seemed genuine. I didn't really like adam's approach of that situation...
WordsSaidLikeHabit hi, would you like people you don’t know hugging you, touching you, asking you questions when you go out? People do it because they feel sorry for him and it makes them more comfortable not him.
Not to mention that the way people do this is often inconsiderate of the person's disability. Like when people try to pet service dogs, block someone in a wheelchair etc.
It's more of a "I'll be nicer to you more than the usual person because you're disabled"
Is it just me or does Lucas seem to be an especially bright individual? Fantastic video! My daughter, who has a very severe case of schizencephaly, often gets long odd looks in public, my daughter looks like a normal child as far as proportions so people often misunderstand her level of disability ... I remember taking her to the mall and she was in pain and crying so I took her out of her wheel chair and held her... the looks I got were... disgusting. People blatantly walking in front of us and staring as if I had no right to bring her into a public space! Well I calmed her down and we finished our shopping, admittedly I was rattled, we hurried and left as soon as possible. I dont bring her to the mall these days because she can feel my tension and becomes upset if people focus on her like that, she cant see or speak but she knows. Anyway, I wish there were more video's like these, wonderful message, thank you.
+Joseph Zaccardi Please don't let the ignorant idiots stop from living your life. You and your daughter deserve to have as much enjoyment of public places as anyone else. If I saw you, I would stop and politely ask if there was anything I could do to help.
Just saw you on sbsk
So much common sense wrapped up into one person..
amazing outlook on life !
Sbsk...that's why I'm here,lol! ...isn't it great!
I can see this documentary is two years old.. I am so compelled to tell you, Adam, what an awesome documentary that was and how it really dug down deep inside me and got my creative juices flowing as to how I can further support and enlighten the community about these issues. Bravo Mr Pearson.. you are a bloody legend!! 👍😊
I am disgusted at certain people who have the ordeal to comment on someone who is disabled, like you must be so fucking insecure that you need to hate on other people to make yourself feel better.
Every time I'm around disabled people, my whole personality changes because I try to treat them as normal as possible like I can't offend them.
It's interesting to note, around 20 minutes into the video, where you point out the estimated vs recorded hate crimes, it's disturbing how many overall hate crimes occur and go unrecorded. A quick calculation from your numbers show 76% of racial crimes go unreported, 88% of sexual orientation, and 91% of disability. Similarly, approximately 80% of rapes go unreported. People seem to fear making the move to report, or as the guy in the bar assault said, they don't think it's worth it because they are so accustomed to such treatment. Maybe they don't expect to be taken seriously, maybe they don't expect to be believed. Or maybe, worst of all, they think they deserved it or asked for it. It really is a societal problem that takes time and action to make any change. So thank you to Adam for making this and starting the conversation.
Another point is that it is incredibly hard, in some cases impossible, to actually impose any sort of legislation on the internet. The only hate crimes that get attention are those involving people with high public exposure, like celebrities or politicians. It is a crime that comes with little fear of punishment, because it is so easy to hide behind usernames with privacy restrictions. Investigation takes a lot more work than the typical crime, and can get shoved to the back for more pressing cases where a concrete threat is prevalent. Not to mention there are millions of people on the internet, and multi-millions of hate speech comments. Idk if it's physically possible to implement legislation on that scale...
When I was in school we were encouraged to help our disabled students to stand up for them even protect if necessary. you didn’t get anything special for it but that wasn’t the point. You developed a friendship with them and they are still good friends today! A few of these friends even live in my neighborhood!!
I am watching this because of my criminology studies but really I am so happy to get educated about hate crime to disable people ...It's hard to change society but this man took the step to increase the awareness of this crime...I hope one day this world become a better place for all the people...
There are a lot of "-isms", and I don't blame people for not knowing what this perticular word means. What I think is most important, though, is that people learn to respect others no matter what the term of not doing so is called.
It is in human nature to be curious, but you don't have to be an arse.
Also, I think it's perfectly understandable that individuals with disabilities want to be left alone like anyone else. They might not want to be asked questions about their appearance when going grocery shopping, for example.
Smart !
Just like genders which there is only 2.
Marry me gorgeous x
I'm with you. I don't think anybody deserves to be castigated just because he/she isn't familiar with the word. What important is the understanding of underlying concept and treat people as you would like to be treated.
LadyDoloris I think people should be allowed their curiosity, just not overbearingly. I still get ask, “where are you from though I’m home grown”, but forget sometimes I am little different and it’s OKAY! However, the nasty assaults to ANYONE.... unforgivable!!!! You definitely don’t need to know the “ism” to know compassion!
Wt*??? Why isn’t a company like Ggl* doing something about this online Hate Crime activity especially on Fb & Yt??? Y don’t they feel any social media pressure to support, assist these Hate Crime Victims??? And then going forward, y don’t they do it right and protect them so it doesn’t happen Ever Again!!
WOW!! This 1 of the most hard hitting documentaries I've ever seen. FK all the h8r bullies. Adam Pearson is a legend & i am blown away by Adams humble & awesumness. Adam you Rock man, &, thankyou 4 being a #HERO
Robbie Robinson Well said =)

I don't have a disability, but I was called all kinds of names for having a large nose once I hit puberty. On top of that problem, I have Scolioses. So I was abused by fellas first by name calling, and later by using me, and losing me. Now things have changed for me. I had my nose fixed, and I stand as straight as I can after much exercise and remaining flexible. I guess I am a very strong person, because I moved forward in life, and was able to compensate my problems. You don't have to be declared disabled to actually feel it. Well, I felt it only because people claimed my ugly, not me. I really like me. Now I'm a mother of three, married to a pretty good guy, and I deal with my back issues. Still not disabled.
It doesn't surprise me that it happens. People are attacked for being different all the time. As a black woman in an interracial relationship, I've had people actually come up and try physically seperate us while we're holding hands.
That's f*d up..
*not being in an interracial relationship, but being messed with for it.
I just dont understand why folks have to think like they do...
I once told my wife, that if enough people had an interracial relationship, then soon we'd be all one race and all the fighting would end!
Seriously UK? The rest of the Western world doesn't think this is cool at all. You need to get your yobs and chavs under control. I have a disabled friend who lives in Croydon, and he gets beat up and stomped on a regular basis. He's terrified to leave his flat, even for a loaf of bread.
+Grace Acosta filthy chavs
To be honest America isn't very better when it comes to the disability community. Especially those with Invisible disabilities.
Thank-you for saying that. I have disabilities in my internal organs and I am constantly discirminated against.
This happens all over the world. It is part of being human and probably always will be...
well maybe you should allow him to carry a knife... hmmmmmmmmm?
It takes a special kind of evil to abuse the defenceless
Trying to understand the dislikes.
The only thing that I can think of, is that these people have the natural instinct to disassociate themselves with others that have different properties that don't match up to theirs, and in-turn react aggressively. These people, in the "modern" world, are globally known as...arrogant. Arrogance doesn't take you far.
i don't understand people sometimes. it shouldn't matter what a person looks like on the outside, i mean he is absolutely darling. he seems such a sweet man, people shouldn't discriminate towards anything really. God bless this lovely man. I wish him every happiness.
There is a big difference between starring and committing a hate crime or being mean/rude to someone. We are pattern seeking creatures and we make judgements based off of what we experience. People stare, doesnt mean they are bad people and unfortunately for you, you are unique and stand out. I can get anxious if I overthink about people staring at me but it certainly does not give me the right to deny them their right of sight. I feel like this is also a tactic used by bullies or mean people. "What are you looking at?" sort of shit.
I use crutches to walk and recently been reviving hate and bullying,I told my school and they gave the abusers a warning! It really is rediculous
You can't always rely on 'telling people' and expect it to work out and people to get a warning! Ffs, learn to defend yourself, this is a cruel world...
@@Dinneen Victim blaming. A lot of disabled people can't defend themselves, or at least are at severe disadvantage.
Being,a black person is not a disability. Stop comparing,.Black, people to your disability.
Ok, who thinks he looks like Elton John?
BLACKM00NSTUDIOS how?
Thank you.
She was cremated, so no.
Hahahaha
LMFAO
don't take internet comments seriously, I understand that bullying in real life is very shitty, but even if you're not disabled everyone is gonna make jokes about everyone on the internet lol
What a watch! the lack of awareness is very dissapointing but i'm glad this is here to watch and help spread humanity.
opposing those hateful comments, I'd like to say you are a great human beig, Adam, with a bright soul.! I Wish You the best!
15:04
did he just compare getting bullied on youtube to genocide or am i missing anything?
What's not genocidal about suggesting all disfigured people should be destroyed at birth??
+iamzs dawgy he was referring to the fact that the person said that he should have been killed at birth because he is disabled - which is exactly what the Nazi German party thought, along with jews, homosexuals, and gypsies. He wasn't saying that name calling is genocide.
yeah, keep up..
All this commotion over a youtube comment? Yes, the comment was horrible, but you're not going to be able to go anywhere on the internet where there won't be hate no matter who you are. Disability or not.
I agree that hate comments get posted everywhere, but the system should be able to take care of a larger portion of them so people who have to encounter that sort of thing over and over again don't have to as often. It's obvious that all youtube does is check the reported comments for trigger words, and as the comment didn't meet the usual requirements it was 'ok', even though it literally suggests another human being to be burned to death. Such a powerful company as UA-cam can be expected to hire a handful of people to actually READ reported content.
+Melanie-hime ASMR I believe that its also what it can do to you. Another documentary talked about a person who had hes entire private life taken from him, because one person repeatedly send angry and aggressive messages to him, personally. Also, when people physically threatens to do all kinds of things to them, I believe that to some it creates fear that someone may take action into their own hands.
Theres more than just a few comments online.
I'm so sorry that you have to deal with these people's hate and utter ignorance. i would totally be your bud if you needed one
I completely agree with his friend. I was bullied and I was always alone. I didn't even know why (even though I didn't have any disfigurements) that I was being bullied and I still don't know why. I kept asking myself, is my head too small or big, are my cheeks too puffy, am I just not enough for anyone? Not even for friends. Still thinking this way, I want to find out why I'm still being bullied.
I live with debilitating chronic pain as a result from a motor vehicle accident. I rately leave my home because it's so taxing & painful. I get stares & hateful comments when I use handicapped parking. It's really upsetting. I fight depression daily as a result of my immobility. I have 2 medical post graduate degrees but I'm unable to practice. All because a person was too lazy to tie down their truck load. I'm just a shell of whom I used to be. 😢
worked with Adam on a short film this year, amazing guy! We even played some Crash Bandicoot and Mortal Kombat in between the shoots! :D
trust me. there are TONS of racist comments that go unreported on youtube. racism is actually a very normal thing on UA-cam, it happens all the time but as a black person I do not let it get to me and I laugh at some of these ignorant individuals.
Keirena Williams you are welcome :)
Knolkanker lol
+Samuel115s
You don't look black.
Rayve Napsu really? what would you say i look like?
Samuel115s
Middle Eastern, Hispanic, or Mixed Race. You have a racially ambiguous look. If I saw you walking down the street, I would never think you were black.
Very nice man. He has a beautiful personality. His hands are beautiful. I would befriend him right away. I don't. see his disability.
Yes he is... he is so cute adorable.. he smart, strong, brave, courageous guy... yes he has got nicest hand..I would be friends with him too.
You wouldn't shag him..... you're prejudice
I’ve seen this guy in a few different things, and it always upsets me how people treat him.
He didn’t choose to look the way he does, and we should treat him with respect.
It's difficult to know where to draw the line with free speech, I don't understand how anybody could make such horrible comments. Maybe the solution is to better educate people on the effects of their abusive words rather than to try and remove what seems almost endless. Honestly though it just makes you feel sick that people say and do these things.
I think the messages behind the video were good, but it shouldn't have been centered around that one hateful comment. It just hurts the video. It's almost as if he has never been on the internet before. The N word is used all the time in a derogatory way, and youtube rarely does anything because there are millions of videos and that would be too difficult. The comment is obviously mean, but its extremely tame compared to most comment sections. If the comment was saying "I'm going to go to your house and kill you you disfigured fuck" then that should definitely be taken down. But this weak troll comment is just so small compared to other things that hurt disabled people.
agree
If it was posted on HIS page, why didn't he delete the comment himself and then ban the person? I definitely see the N word etc. all the time on youtube. There are videos saying the Holocaust wasn't real on youtube, and have been for years. And I have a hard time believing that there was not one person who reported those, but they're still there.
This is so cruel, people only act like that such as not sitting close to him probably because they think he has something to catch? That's so awful, everytime I see someone in a wheelchair and then out in public with a family member or mate I always try to help because they appreciate it.
I fell bad for this guy it makes me cry when people picking on him
+Cory Paulich Is it because you look like him?
muh projecting
People who commit hate crimes against disabled people should be aware that they themselves may one day end up in a wheelchair or with a facial disfigurement as a result of an accident or disease.
The man who is narrating the documentary seems like a really pleasant guy, and truly respect him. He's very strong. I would love to talk to him, he just seems charming.
why would anyone be so mean...
i'm only 10 seconds in and im crying please protect these people
he thicc
+amer ica that's one weird fetish you've got there buddy, but hey you do you.
He is sweet and not ugly at all. He looks different for sure, but not in ugly way. Not everything is looks you know. Best of luck to him in his life and fuck the haters :)
+Sabina Мёд yeah !!! he's more braver than me .
SWAN HEART same for me. You gotta admire that confidence :)
Sabina Мёд totally , i don't have 0.01% of his confidence .
+SWAN HEART Everybody struggles with self confidence. You gotta work on it :) It's like training a muscle. I see it this way confidence is practicing your strength of character. And it's the best gift you can give yourself. You can achieve it too dear!
Sabina Мёд you know , i look so young for my age , the first thing that strangers say to me when i say my age : ooh my dear lord you look so young and it's not fluttering at all , and my personality doesn't helps at all , i can't seem to get angry at people or defend my self the right way so most of people tend to take advantage of my situation . and i can't change that it's who i am . lately i got the chance to work for the first time in my life as high school teacher , i stood the first day in front of the students and oh my god , i felt like i'm in the jungle , i couldn't control them sadly , they had way more confidence than i do . i knew this job isn't for me no matter how much i got knowledge , so i'm jobless again and lost of what kind of a job that suits my look and personality.
The worst kind of bullying is against people who can't fight back, and for things that are out of their control such as this. Like it's one thing to make fun of a fat person, but making fun of disabled people or someone's (facial) appearance is pure mean because it's out of their control.
This video does a superb job of illustrating how human bias manifests itself - and more importantly that it can change, and very quickly. If you want to know true beauty, be sure to look beyond the exterior of any given human being. You might be lucky enough to meet someone like Adam Pearson.
Not being funny but the CPS and Police have better things to do than help a person because someone called them a mean name online.
Sam Buckley People have been murdered due to being disabled. Disabled people are also attacked and harassed. Disableism isn’t just about a few unpleasant names. It can ruin lives.
True unfortunately they won't do anything about cyber bullying even tho it's agianst the law!
Sam Buckley yeah, like sitting on their asses collecting our tax dollars and taking kids and placing them in foster care when it's not necessary or returning kids to their abusers. The police are never at the station, if you need a deputy it has to wait between 3-4hours to get one and all they give you is an incidence report number...yeah...they're too busy doing NOTHING AT ALL
@@CedarMountainsnow Also since it's online, the perpetrator might be in a country where discrimination is not apart of their legal system in the same extent.
think it's more than 'a mean name online'...
Beauty is skin deep, and most of the time, some ppl with beautiful faces have the worse heart. like the old saying face of an angel but the heart of a devil. And u can also notice he have a beautiful soul. God bless & protect him. The sky is the limit . And dealing with a disability it's already enough . Why make his life harder by being mean too him. I takeout my heart too him. He is a very brave & courageous man 🙏🌟🙏.
cute, but in reality first impression and looks get you further than being a nice soul as this guy here.
Let’s be honest, you wouldn’t marry him.
@@ew1068 don't think anyone mentioned marriage buddy.
As much as I understand the message the documentary is trying to present (in relation to Google in particular) you have to understand that you're dealing with a company based in America where "freedom of speech" is one of our most highly touted rights. Unless the comment is directed at you in a way that would put you in danger in the future then it's hard for the police or any company to justify going after an individual. People say heinous things on the internet to each other whether or not it's driven by racism disablism or any other kind of prejudice.
5:20 the whole back seat section was empty too. i feel this guy is making this a bigger problem than it really is.
It breaks my heart when people can be so cruel to others... 😢
The "Golden Rule" has been attributed to Jesus of Nazareth, who used it to summarize the Torah: "Do to others what you want them to do to you. This is the meaning of the law of Moses and the teaching of the prophets"
People are assess when they don't understand others that are different... 😟
I have a lower form of NF1 Like this and I respect and looked up to him is an inspiration to meney
NF1 is disfigurement, but not defined as a disability though, which negates the whole argument of the video. It's unfortunate that he has been a target of abuse and bullying, but I don't fully agree that it's a hate crime. A disability is being blind, deaf, in a wheelchair and unable to walk etc.
I literally cannot get my head around why anyone could be so cruel and horrible to another human being?
It's the fear, and the inability to face a reality that makes people go to such extremes to hurt those that are disfigured....
Our body is only a shell that we had no part in creating.
Omg some people are so mean to disabled people they are just the same as you not any different
Sorry but this guy needs to stop reading comments on the internet
I have normal hearing, but I have deaf friends. Once when I was out with several of them, and using sign language, a young woman came up to me, grabbed my shoulder, and screamed at the top of her lungs right in my ear. She thought it was a hilarious joke to mock a deaf person. Unfortunately, I'm not deaf, and it was very painful. I was shocked and said something, and she again laughed, and said "you talk real good for a deaf girl." Unfortunately, my friends were walking ahead of me, and of course they didn't hear her scream or see the altercation. This was before cell phones so I couldn't call the police right away, and unfortunately there were no other witnesses, so they couldn't do anything. People who would mistreat Adam Pearson or others with a disability are the ones with a real disability of empathy and humanity.
I've been witness to Disablism since I was a young child. While I'm not pinning Christians as bad, I attended a church up to the age of 12 that let a lot of harassment slide, and one of the worst cases was against a young man who was mentally disabled because his birth mother did drugs while pregnant with him. He was very outgoing and friendly, but adults ignored him and children bullied him with names and throwing things at him. Kids wouldn't want to sit next to him on a pew, claiming he stunk or had germs because he drooled a lot and chewed on one hand. He had an older brother who tried to protect him, but because of the age gap was not always there. He was one of the sweetest people I ever knew.
I know it's more or less human condition to be wary or even afraid of those that do not look the same as others, but we really need to stop treating them like they're an alien race or a sideshow attraction set free on the streets.
What an amazing personality this man has! Inspiring.
