  • BVLOS or beyond visual line of sight is a desperate goal for the drone industry. But LiPo batteries and tiny electric motors aren't going to do that. But there are plenty of engine makers out there working on hybrid and heavy fuel solutions. At AUVSI Exponential, AVweb's Paul Bertorelli looked at four examples.

    What is missing from that line up is the DARPA Funded Liquid Piston Engine, optimally integrated with the generator of the first unit in the video. The marine industry is waiting for this combination for backup power. The Liquid Piston is a 3 lobe rotary with 30% efficiency, low noise, and low vibration. The extra efficiency comes from the “Piston” being used to channel both exhaust and intake air so becomes a heat exchanger. This LPE Generator will also be used to provide backup power for Solar installations where it will be built into water heaters so it generates both electricity to recharge Lithium Batteries, but heats the water as well bring its operating efficiency to over 60%.
    Come on people, make it happen. There is a huge efficient energy need out here.

    Really impressive BSFC on that Launch Point engine. I was rather shocked.

    That was some cool stuff! There will be a point when uav and general aviation will merge. It'll be awesome but with a ton of growing pains.

    some of these would be nice as replacement powerplants for old ultralights getting rebuilt.

    Those cylinders are stihl cylinders designed for chainsaws ,,I recognized them as soon as I seen them ,,they are set up as case reed intake with the original intended intake ports closed off,,carburetor jetted on A V fuel, ,I have used them on the motorized bicycle engines that iv been building for over 2 years now there very dependable

    I was looking to make my own drone i can fly on and wanted a 4 rotary motors to drive the props or a gas engine powering electric motors...guess lots of people had same ideas.

      My thoughts exactly. A person who is building something like this himself is able to meaningfully comment on these.

    knowing that a Reaper drone can take on 1.4 ton of fuel + two extra wing tank for an autonomy of 40 hours+ flight, weighting around 5 tons in all with great performances ,I don't get why this engine tech is not applied to modern GA small planes...!!

    • @joedoakes8307

      Because the owners of small planes can't afford the ridiculous prices these mfgers of these engines charge the US govt !

    Much distorted audio. Please learn proper sound recording.

    • @AVweb
      @AVweb  7 років тому +2

      Only the last segment has some distortion. You try recording in these halls in the six minutes we have to get it done and see how it works. But then, I know your thing is complaining. :)

    • @bjs2022
      @bjs2022 7 років тому

      No, most of the clips had over modulated/distorted sound. Listen to it on a high fidelity (accurate) big speaker sound system and you can hear the defects. Good audio is more important in telling your story than the video. I offer constructive criticism to help people improve. I've been doing professional video production since 1980 (and I also started flying and owning an airplane since about 1963) and I want you to succeed and improve your production values. As you probably have found out, sound is the poor stepchild of video production and it's usually harder to do then video. I commend you for using body microphones and in very noisy environments you need a shotgun microphone about which I've commented on an earlier video and I think you were using a hand mike in one/some of them.

    Nah, don't waste your time on this stuff. Electric motors and batteries are getting to the point where they're just about to overtake chemical engines. It'll be just a few years now, so why spend your time developing a technology which will be obsolete in a year or two?

    • @numb3r663
      @numb3r663 6 років тому

      chemical engines?....combustion engine driving electric motors is my guess....

    • @mikelastname9444
      @mikelastname9444 6 років тому

      By chemical engines, I mean that their energy is stored chemically, in the chemical bonds of fuels such as kerosene, rather than electrically. Combustion engines are a form of chemically powered engines, as are rocket engines and fuel powered jet turbine engines.

    • @BluntForceTrauma666
      @BluntForceTrauma666 6 років тому +9

      How do you figure that battery energy density will equal that of a "chemical" fuel in just a few years? Motors? Yes, electric motor power could exceed that of IC engines long ago. But batteries AND a motor? Hell no. Last I read, actually having a REAL product (battery) that could even come close to the energy density of say, gasoline, AND be affordable, was at LEAST 20-30 years away. Remember, there's one hell of a delay between dicking around with super caps and uber graphene amidst a pile of wiring and tubes and making something WORK and THEN mass producing it AND combining all that with a lightweight motor and speed controller, and doing all THAT at a price and weight that's EQUAL to or less than that of an equivalent internal combustion engine.
