This may have been one of my favorite tours that you've done. It would be marvelous if you could go back and do a follow up episode when their event space is completed!
We lived in Birdsall for over 50 years and i met 3 different Lord Middletons and i have learnt more in this you tube than i ever did living there. What a great job Lady Cara and James are doing.
Thank you and Cara Willoughby for this Victorian kitchen tour. It is amazing that for 150 years, no one has significantly altered the original kitchen and we get to see it! Birdsall House is a truly beautiful place. If possible, I would love to see a manor house kitchen evolve over time, with photos of every phase from, say, the eighteenth century (drawings, if they existed) through the nineteenth (early photography) and into the twentieth century. I realize the earliest kitchens were in a sub basement area and later kitchens were moved upstairs to a different floor.
I LOVE what they're doing with the downstairs kitchen. History is indeed being brought to life. Bless all of the wonderful people who work so hard to sustain these properties.
What a spectacular house! The 'downstairs' area is very reminiscent of the downstairs area in the movie, Gosford Park, which was also written by Julian Fellowes, who then wrote Downton Abbey! When that movie was filmed, there were still members of staff still alive who worked in similar kitchens in the early 1900s who were advisors to the film makers regarding authenticity. Amazing that so much was preserved, which can now be refurbished to modern times! What a great episode, Julie! Please plan a large special birthday party once the 'downstairs' has been completed!
This video was definitely a 10! She is truly the queen of the kitchen❤ I love that she’s not trashing the place and trying to restore it it will be a most excellent venue. I would like to see it when it’s done.😊
WOW 🤩 What a gorgeous estate! So well preserved, and all the beautiful portraits and yes, the ballroom is exquisite! Thanks Julie, for introducing us to all of these spectacular historic houses! As I have said, before, I feel privileged to experience these places through your channel. Places I doubt I would ever get to see. Keep up the good work, and take care of yourself as well! Peace ☮️
32:25 ooh, the old sinks would hold bottled drinks chilling on ice very nicely, especially if the drains still work to let water out. Beautiful, ambitions project. Thanks for the video, Julie & crew.
This one is special! Just came to say, the people weren’t ALL short; the household help , however, was often made up of the Irish, girls, even children. That sinks area was the scullery! Good to remember!
Julie your excitement in viewing and sharing this amazing estate was wonderful. What an incredible place. Thank goodness the Willoughby family has honoured and preserved this amazing historic home for today and for the future generations. Just beautiful. That view from Lady Cara's kitchen is worthy of a painting.
Julie is a wonderful interviewer, keeping it informal and comfortable, and being wonderfully inquisitive. She makes sure all our questions are answered. Julie and Lady Cara riff off each other wonderfully without being cliquey or anything, even though they’re friends. Wonderful tour.
As I watch all of these historic homes, being preserved, the cost, the love, we owe such a thank you to the families that are putting their blood sweat and tears into these projects. During the entire coronation of King Charles III, I longed that these families would have been represented in their robes and coronets. These families are the future of the nations, not the charities that come and go, that were in attendance at the coronation. So happy about these families. So sad that they were not recognized at a critical time.
Absolutely 💯 I was so looking forward to when all the dukes etc put their coronets on when the crown 👑 was placed on Charle's head. And such a pity they were not in their coronation robes.
Well done, Julie. This series and this episode is a triumph, to be enjoyed and savoured. Hearty congratulations to everyone involved and, yes, it would be great to revisit after the old kitchen renovations have progressed or been completed. Thanks for all the effort you put into this. 🥰💐🤗
This was your most enjoyable tour. Incredible history. Those short sinks are surprising. So glad she's keeping everything. I wonder if the sinks were short because the older children were working at them? Thank you, so much, for the tour.
The generations before us were much shorter than us so I think the sinks are for adults. Letters from the lady of the house showed us how passionate she was about Children’s education and getting all the Estate workers children into the local village school.
Beautiful home! I think it is so interesting that people still wish to recreate the past. I think the show Downton Abbey has rekindled our interest in the early 1900's and earlier. Not because it's considered romantic. But shows that you can live a simpler life. And we can step back and history and check out. This series also has kept me interested in my own English heritage and the homes that my ancestors had.
THANK YOU FOR THIS MOST AWESOME INSIGHT TO HISTORY!!!! PLEASE PLEASE GO BACK WHEN THE RENEVATIONS IS DONE. BIRDSALL HOUSE IS JUST SO SPECTACULARY BEAUTIFUL!!!! IT IS OBVIOUS THAT LADY CARA WILLOUGHBY LOVE THE HISTORY, BUT SHE IS INDEED A WOMAN WITH VISION!!!!
That was an amazing tour. I live in the Chicago area, far north, and have really enjoyed both of your channels -- this one and Mapperton. You are right -- what they are doing at Birdsall is so incredibly creative, taking advantage of the unchanged 1870s staff area, but making it usable and preserving history at the same time.
Fantastic photography! Amazing portraits! What a glorious house! Love the kitchen! Would love to see the restored downstairs when it’s completed! Love Julie’s enthusiasm!!
Wow ! This house is spectacular! My brain did summer saults going from the historic laden spaces to the more modern kitchen. The view from the kitchen window is heavenly. Fabulous work Julie, thank you so much for sharing!
This house was , I think, my favorite of all. The amount of sunshine through the huge windows was awesome. I loved the size of the rooms and the wall colors. Sigh…..🥰❤️🤷♀️
Love the Vette.❤Birdsall is so homey and comfy looking for a huge country house. My God, the basement is enormous! Cara was so excited showing all of the basement renovations. Excellent.😊
I think this was my favorite tour that you have done. Beautiful home, and amazing history! As she said, very old England. I could just imagine a ball in full swing. The ties to Lady Jane Grey and Jane Austen are something that could write a book. The award-winning kitchen is spectacular and, along with the views and animal life, gives this formal home a sense of charm. The "downstairs" tour was amazing! I would love to see the final project and hope you return upon completion. Thank you so much for bringing this to us!
Thank you for sharing be impressive of the size of renovation at Birdsall houses ! Fascinated! Being Canada we don't have that kind of history! My home was a bungalow built in 1963 and my husband was the third Joe that lived here now just me third owner but love my modest 700 square foot home lot 50 by 100 square feet at 69 Joe planned to find a home I could manage as he had lots of health so knew I would be the last in the home ! Love it doing work to update so when it sold my executors will have little to do and Iam, comfortable!
I've been a watcher/lurker of both your channels for a few months now, but this kitchen transformation below stairs has my goosebumps flowing! o...mY,,,GAWD!!
What a wonderful old kitchen space, so brilliant that the main features will be preserved. A lot of British people are very petite even now. Oh, I love the connection to Jane Austen.
Excellent tour of a beautiful historic home. Really enjoyed Lady Cara, what a lovely, gracious and down to earth lady. Look forward to seeing the finished party venue.
Great episode, and what a wonderful idea for the old kitchens of the historic house. I am sure it will be a super success. Especially interesting family background of the Willowbees!
I'm so glad you showed your Opening segment again 🎉❤! I love your car! Beautiful! This was a fabulous episode! I'm rewatching it now since I only caught a part here and there before! I'm so glad you were able to visit this lovely home! ❤
Beautiful house with large yards, very quite but nobody people look around... still good looking, better than nothing... Spectacular... I have a dream to have my own home then my family has heritage to be proud... 🌐🇬🇧❤️
One day, I hope to see you Julie, returning to the place in America where you grow up, with Nestor. That would be a great inspiring episode. But for now, thank you fpr these beautiful works! Padayon Julie!
Lovely! The kitchen sinks were low because of the size of the cooking and roasting pans. Easier to lift large pans out of a low sink than to reach high.
This house is so beautiful! On the short kitchen sinks and counters of the old kitchen, my guess is it because the scullery maids who did the dishwashing were kids (between ages 10-13 usually).
I love all your videos and all the heart and hard work you all put into the estate! Also, the banter of the pecan made me laugh! Such is marriage!! ♥️🤣
Such a vast home, it's full of beautiful antiques, I notice glass built over some pieces so you could still see the ornate work.and the ballroom was beautiful.
Cara thank you so much for showing us through your breathtaking home!! This incredible estate is very lucky to have you now taking care of it, you are very respectful of the homes rich history and supremely capable and game to take on such a vast legacy. I would love to know if you have always lived here or if you married into the family perhaps? Thank you again!! Julie please, please have a party here once it is completed!!
Hi, thank you for you comment and question. My husband family, the Willoughby’s, have lived here since 1540. I joined the family and we moved into the house 6 years ago. I am glad you enjoyed the episode. Best wishes, Cara
Hi Cara, thank you so much for your answer!! You are one brave woman, what an epic home/family for you to be dedicated to. They are certainly incredibly lucky to have you as a part of the family now, you certainly seem more than up for such a gigantic responsibility. Have a gorgeous Christmas season Cara.@@BirdsallHouse.Yorkshire
Thanks so much, I throughly enjoyed my tour around that magnificent house, yet extremely homely too. Cannot wait to hopefully see the Victorian kitchen project, it looks fabulous. Thanks again.
What an amazing place and what an excellent job of restoration they are doing there! Used to love going to these type open houses when I was growing up there.

Really love this manor and Lady Cara is a lovely hostess and guide to the history!
Thank you!
THIS tour was smashingly WONDERFUL! Thank you Julie, Luke, family and crew! Was a media vacation! 🩷🌿💙 Special thanks to your hosts! Beautiful estate!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Julie, you have to give a tour when this is finished. It is magnificent!
That's the plan!

My entire 1 bedroom apartment can easily fit into that first bedroom - with extra room!
Please do another tour when the renovations are complete ❤

Such a beautiful place. I hope you will have a follow up video showing the place when the renovations are complete.
Beautiful 150 year old kitchen! Love that they are going to keep it!
This is going to be FABULOUS!! I love all of the plans.

That ballroom is a fab colour. Would be great in your library
LOVE that you went back to the vintage car intro 🤩 Cara did put it very well on how these homes can survive.

This is my choice as the best historical house for its designs in its every corner and layouts and proportions in every room.
Thank you, we can’t take the credit, the Georgians were great architects and designers.
Please go there again, so much we haven't seen ❤

Hahaha as an American I thought the same of the gas lit lights! I was gonna be like wow that’s impressive if they are still working 😂😂😂😂
This house was , I think, my favorite of all. The amount of sunshine through the huge windows was awesome. I loved the size of the rooms and the wall colors. Sigh…..🥰❤️🤷♀️
Wow, it could be used as a set for period dramas, Mrs. Pattmore eat your heart out!
The highest level of elegance. Stunning.
Going insane over the ballroom. The way they use mints, golds, and whites. Just so good
What a fabulous house 🏠 the paint colours are stunning and I love that kitchen.
Love the Vette.❤Birdsall is so homey and comfy looking for a huge country house. My God, the basement is enormous! Cara was so excited showing all of the basement renovations. Excellent.😊

Delightful! Thank you so much, Julie, for bringing this history alive.

Beautiful house with large yards, very quite but nobody people look around... still good looking, better than nothing... Spectacular... I have a dream to have my own home then my family has heritage to be proud... 🌐🇬🇧❤️
Simply breathtaking estate! I won’t think what it cost to heat that giant home in the damp UK climate. I simply detest being cold, and worse, damp!
Her vision and home are so perfect. I love home that can adapt with character. Great job on the tour and your enthusiasm.
Outstanding. Loved this!
One day, I hope to see you Julie, returning to the place in America where you grow up, with Nestor. That would be a great inspiring episode. But for now, thank you fpr these beautiful works! Padayon Julie!
Thank you for the video! Please do a video when this wonderful place is finished. Very exciting!
The old kitchen area could also be converted to house the Great British Baking Show during their filming season. It would be the perfect backdrop!
Please go back when it’s finished and show us!
