  • Do you have a GE side by side refrigerator with a water and ice dispenser in the freezer door that just doesn't work any more? The green lights in this unit would go out with the cup switch was pressed. This video shows you the likely culprit and how to fix it.

I watched a number of videos on reasons/fixes for the water and ice NOT dispensing from my refrigerator. When I saw this one I said to myself - "It couldn't be this easy" I was WRONG!!! This is exactly what was wrong with mine. The white wire had corroded and snapped off at the pin. I cut all of the wires from the connectors, soldered them together with the sequence indicated and I'm back in business. I haven't been able to dispense water or ice for over 6 months - it took all of about 20 minutes to get the tools, cut, solder, and turn the electricity back on. Saved a bundle of cash by not having to call a repairman!!! THANKS!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks for your help Greg! Our in door dispenser was dead - no lights, no activity. First thought was, crap, gotta buy a new frig. Then I started looking for a new interface panel. Found out they are no longer made and very hard to find and over $100 if you do. Then I came across your YT video. Watched it, went to work on checking the connections at the bottom and they were a corroded mess! Got out my electrical tools, cut the power, snip, snip, added the heat shrink connectors, tape, put it all back together and BAM! Back in business! Thanks for sharing this fix!

My goodness you just saved us over $2,000 on us buying a new appliance package! Because we thought our refrigerator was unfix-able (we had an appliance repair guy come out and he said it was the motherboard and he had no parts to fix it). I really do like our refrigerator, but we were lead to believe it could not be fixed. My son followed your instructions and in less than an hour our refrigerator was fixed! We cannot thank you enough! Totally awesome video!

OMG!!! I had a GE technician come into my house and he charged me a fortune to change the "main board". I live in Brazil and everything related to electrical appliances, including replacement parts, costs a lot. I doubted the diagnostic. Called a non-brand tech. Another mis-diagnostic. This time, the guy said he would have to change the front panel (the one with the LEDs and buttons). Then I decided to search for the solution online and came across this life-saving video. My connector was all rusted. Actually, it was so rusted that one of the wires easily came loose. I was so happy to find this out but also outraged by the lack of knowledge and fair play on the part of the techs. Anyway, thank you very much for this. I ended up just connecting the wire without soldering.

Not sure why the design is like this, it didn't seem like my connector is sitting in water but the sleeve was wet. I'm guessing condensation from the interior to exterior transition? That's a bad design... Thanks for the video, I was going to start troubleshooting somewhere else but this is a good reminder to always check connections first!

It is a good video with the right diagnostics for the ice and water dispenser problem. However, I would not have soldered the wires together like this. I would get new electrical connectors similar to the old connector or any three wire connectors and install the wires into them instead, making sure that the wires from one connector would go to the right wires on the other connector. When you done putting the wires into the new connectors, you can just plug them back together. Of course, a large heat shrink tube over the connector would prevent future corrosion. There is a reason that GE engineers designed the wiring to be replaceable, doing this will prevent you from replacing the wiring in the future.

Thanks for your video Greg!!! I had the same issues but no broken pin in the connector. I decided to try spraying some DEOXIT contact cleaner in each connection as the pins looked a little corroded. Plugged the connection back in an no luck.

My GE refrigerator isn't the same model as yours in the video, but basically the same connections behind the lower plastic panel. Thanks to your video, I went straight to the problem. The connector was corroded! Not as badly as your though, so I was able to avoid the cutting and resoldering of the wires. I cleaned up the individual connections to get as much of the corrosion off as I could. I then applied some moisture preventative dielectric lube to the connector and reconnected it. Problem solved! Total repair time was about 15 minutes. Thank You!!

Kudos to you, sir. I cleaned the connections. I did everything I could do just so that I would not have to cut and solder the wires, but in the end I had to do it exactly the way you suggested, and viola! It worked. Thank you so much. This video is as relevant today as it was 7 years ago.

Great video, this solved my mysterious issue! My water was not working, press the button, it sounded like water was about to come out, but it doesn’t, seemed like frozen water line issue but it wasn’t, hav t had a frozen line since I branched off my reverse osmosis filter. The ice works, dispenses ice. If I disconnect water line coupler at the front bottom of fridge and press the button, water comes out, so something between the door and floor water line. Without any other options to try, I checked my wires as you outlined in video, no obvious corrosion, it it didn’t look great either. I crimped to blue with and black wire together with low voltage crimp connectors. The red and white I soldered together since I wasn’t sure if I could use the connectors with a wire that supplies power. After doing this, my water dispenser started working again! Great video!

GREG !!! Thanks mate !!! Just the little piece of information I could not find from all the others relevant videos on the subject, I was getting crazy checking voltages from the board to the soft touch panel on my GE, and all the problem was corrosion from the tiny connection at the bottom of the door !!! Thanks again, my GE is now dispensing as usual. In my case, instead of soldering the wires I tried first with a wire connector, and it worked 100%, so I insulated the area and voilá !!!

I crimped on some quick connect plugs, cut the black sheath back to about 2” before it enters the door and made a drip loop. Should be good till the fridge dies lol

The method of thawing it out to get the water flowing and then get some styrofoam and HVAC silver tape works great. Cut out two pieces of styrofoam, one for the angled part and one for the vertical part on the back of the dispenser(inside freezer) tape it up and you are good to go. Yeah, I'd figure ANY connector on an appliance that has water or condensation on it would be waterproofed. I guess that would add $.05 to the cost of manufacture, so they don't do it.

Like my hyundai they must of put the ac drain tube on and didn't pop the plastic cover.since day one if the ac had to work hard my windows would be fogged up almost like when a heater core goes bad. I googled it and allot of people had the same issue.other then that its a great truck.
