I was THERE that night! We had NO idea that we were about to get our heads blown away. Just one of the most amazing musical moments in my life. The SONG! The Vocal DUET! That guitar solo FINALE! Everybody in that place was blown away. And no one knew it was coming.

I can imagine. I tuned in for the Musicare Tribute to Bruce (2014, Jon Stewart etc) and when Tom played the song by himself I was floored! Even the stiff crowd (at tables, all being "important" in the popular music scene)
      They're absolutely even better together.

Tom Joad has been a staple of Tom Morello/Rage Against the Machine shows forever. But this was the only tour Spirngsteen inluded it in his playlist. And this Anaheim show - which I attended for wildly different reasons - was the first one Tom Morello joined the E Street Band for. They have since repeated the collab several times since. It's a Socialist Dream performance!

Bruce Springsteen is one of my dads childhood idols, Tom Morello is one of mine. I've known of this song for ages but i usually listen to the RATM version whenever i listen to it. My god, how have i missed this? There's something special about this performance, Bruce's raw emotion in his voice and Tom's raw emotion in his guitar, it's a perfect mix. That solo from Tom had my laughing at how talented he is and crying for how beautiful it is at the same time. Absolutely incredible.

I couldn't agree more. The combination of this song and the current pandemic inspired this song: ua-cam.com/video/JDAYxAdWIR4/v-deo.html
This whole performance is legendary. Historic. Especially for Tom Morello, who gave a Hendrix-at-Woodstock-level performance and made me a fan.
And, of course, Springsteen's heartbreaking, gut wrenching writing and intense performance.
You know, now that I think about it, what makes Morello so great here is that he matches Springsteen's intensity. It's like they're both performing with life-or-death consequences hanging in the balance.

Same. For the past ten years I’ve watched various renditions of this act. I especially watch it to remind me that there are people out there actively fighting injustice. I really love is the acknowledgment of Bruce Springsteen for Tom Morello. In a real way, the Troubador’s rejection of inequality passes from Woody Guthrie, through Steinbeck and Springsteen. And now Morello reminds us that Tom Joad is just as relevant as ever. Waiting for the last to be first...neath the underpass, in a cardboard box. Damn.

Americans were suffering due to the greed of bankers making money. They killed people and smiled.
John Steinbeck channeled that suffering and wrote "Grapes of Wrath".
Bruce Springsteen lived a time where the suffering was less, but he felt that it was bubbling under the surface. He channeled John Steinbeck and wrote this song. Tom Morello was feeling the Rage and used what he had to channel into that energy passed down from generations.
This was performed 11 years ago, at a time when it was relevant.

They did it again in 2007. So now we have a Great Recession to go with a Great Depression. Both parties did it as anyone from the Clintons, Schumer, Bush, Boehner, Gingrich and the Gramms all sold us out to bankers and the already wealthy. So the anger is real. While American gets sucked into Red vs Blue the real problem is Green as in money. You can't have a democracy when money pays for power. Neither party taking money is going to deliver our government or the economy to we the people until we wise up and take it back. Yes, the parties have differences, but they have both made the system rotten and we pay the price. Tom Joad for the 21st century.

This is a fabulous arrangement. The addition of Tom Morello is inspired and his playing quite sublime.

Tom‘s solo at the end is one of my favorite guitar moments ever.

I just listened to this last night!!! I've had this version for awhile. It still gives me goosebumps! Springsteen and Morello work so well together on this version, it gives the song much more emotional weight than it had in its acoustic version. It's like together they created a whole new form of "protest song." I love this.
