Great to see some love for Kull. And that del Rey edition is just great with some fantastically dark illustrations. Really look forward to a video on Bran Mac morn now. I may have said it before but...Worms of the Earth!!!

I've never heard of the Kull stories, unfortunately. I grew up reading a few of the Conan comics (looking back, probably a bit too violent for a child to read, lol), but I had no idea that they were based on books. The idea of a lost world combining fantasy sounds amazing! I'll definitely put the Kull series on my TBR.

There were some very deep thoughts in the Kull stories, you wouldn’t think a guy from a small town in Texas was exploring such thoughts as the multiverse in the late 1920s.

Love seeing a spotlight on Kull, Michael! “Kings of the Night” is such a great story. The ante-antediluvian nature of these stories gives them a stranger energy from the Conan stories. It’s also interesting to see how the “brooding intellect” we get with Kull shifts into the reflections he gives Conan. Always enjoyable to see these. I hope your week has gone well.
    Best, Jack

I have never read Kull, but I do like me a good Atlantis story. I do hear a lot of Conan in it, and really interesting how Kull was developed from a failed Conan story.

I love REH. I even took a trip to Cross Plains, Texas to see the house he lived in and the tiny room where he wrote his stories. Such a talented writer.

You've made another compelling case for Howard. I ordered The Coming of Conan the Cimmerian a month ago after watching your previous Robert E Howard video. Alas still waiting for it....sigh.....As for Bran Mak Morn, I'm intrigued. I read a wiki. I will start lobbying 🤣

    KULL.👍😁👍
My Favorite Conan(outside of REH books) was The big Black & White magazine (comics)..that a lot of times had Kull, and, or Red Sonya in the back stories.
I have comics of Kull , and Conan meeting. 👍
I can't say I liked Kulls stories better than Conan in REHs work, but each 2 their Own.👍
I was just about 2 say they both became Kings by their own Hands.😁
I still can't believe You haven't read David Gemmell. REHs writings is what got me into David Gemmell. Just like H.P Lovecraft got me into REH.
LoL. I always thought of Kull as Conans weird Great Grandfather. LoL.
    Made myself laugh.
Shoot Robert E. Howard is why I got into Fantasy at about 11 ,or 12.
If it wasn't for him I may never have read fantasy .
Because even though a lot of family members read ....none read Fantasy, but Myself...thanks 2 REH.
    Great video 👍👍👍👍👍

Michael LOVE your Kull videos. I personally think after Oliver Stone & Edward Pressman sold the Conan movie rights that John Milius, Arnold & everyone involved sat down & agreed that for 1982 KULL worked better on screen & suited Arnold better but Conan was the bigger draw so Arnold's 2 Conan movies were Kull in everything but name. Kull is my favourite character of Howard's. I have a Facebook page dedicated to him & love the underrated 1997 Kevin Sorbo movie

Kull holds a weird fascination on me. As a Conan fan I initially dismissed Kull, thinking it a proto Conan. But then I actually read my first Kull story: the Shadow Kingdom.. and well, if you don't know already, it's possibly R.E.H. Best work. And kull has deeper influence on pop culture than people realise: Skeletor from he-man is virtually a Thulsa Doom. Serpent Men infiltration has parallels to ufo Lizard Men, etc

I agree that Robert E. Howard is amazing. I have a Conan book that looks a lot like that Kull book. I have the movie about Robert E. Howard on DVD; it's good, but sad. By chance, do you name your hats? I feel like that hat could be a Trevor or a William, maybe a Cole.

I felt the Kull stories were more introspective than the Conan stories. Kull was a deeper thinker than Conan. My favorite Kull story is "Delcardes Cat".

  • @paulforder591

The contrasting barbarians: Conan was ready to confront the monster and/or the villain in person. Kull, on the other hand, seldom ventured out from his castle, and stayed there for his own protection.
Kull was also more Byronic in his way of expressing himself, in addition to being
a brooder. I personally prefer him over Conan as the former is straightforward in attitude, and a reformist king, as the story "By This Axe I Rule!" clearly shows. 🗡🗡🗡🗡🗡😺

You have to wonder in how much this reputation of R.E.H. being a "weird guy" is due to L. Sprague De Camps later character assassination. Which was not based any facts as far as I can tell.. he didn't know R.E.H. R.E.H. also clearly had a bunch of friends and had a girlfriend. Not typical of "the town weirdo". You also have to wonder how much of that discrediting was intended to justify and elevate his own rewriting of the REH originals. (Which people consider inferior because he redefined the character of conan as a Chivalrous type, and toned down the eroticism (which by today's standards is already mild at best ))
