Kim E is me even when watching this for the 40th time, such an emotional scene. On another note I'm glad I've stuck w/ early editions of the films, so things like the added Noooo are news to me.
I can't remember what re-release added the "Noooo", but when I watched it on TV around 2000 on one of those movie channels, I already knew that it wasn't the original release (as I was lucky that one of my family members had the original VHS or whatever the media was at the time), but I remember not hearing the "Nooo" when I watched it that day.
That wasn't Anakin, that was pure Vader. He finally achieved what all Sith Apprentices must, to defeat their Master and take the title. After 22 years as Jedi and 22 years as Sith, both Anakin and Vader proved themselves!
No, that wasn’t Vader. That was Anakin fueled by love and his desire to protect those most precious to him, in this case his son. Honestly I don’t like that scene in the special edition because of the ‘No’s’ it takes away the emotion of the scene.
Whoever wrote the prophesy of the chosen one is a bit of a dick for leaving out the part where the chosen one goes Sith and puts the galaxy through two decades of misery first, then kills the dark lord.
Funny, I stopped watching them when they did their Empire Strikes Back review because Hannah missed the point of, "I know." That little performance certainly makes me never want to watch them again.
Anakin IS Vader. There was no "split personality", he wasn't possessed, he didn't become someone else. Let the man own his mistakes, it makes his choosing his son over Palpatine that much better.
I saw this when it was first released before that stupid “noooo” line had been added. At that time you had to imagine what was going on in Vader’s head which made a lot more suspenseful and intense. And when Vader finally destroyed the emperor the audience went nuts! They were practically on their feet cheering and applauding! It was a truly great moment.
Gah. I can't get past that stupid "no" line added in the special edition. This scene was much more effective with Vader not uttering a word. It's like George Lucas lost all confidence in his own audience.
This is the ONLY change that George made, that I don't agree with. It's SO much more powerful seeing the cogs turn in Anakin's head. I know why George did it. He did it to mimic Anakin's "Nooooo" from Revenge of the Sith after the Emperor tells him about Padmé dying. But in this case, less is more.
Anikin is the prophecy, that he will bring balance to the force and he did….well, until Disney and Kathleen Kennedy got their hands on the property! 🤦♂️
To this day the added Nos are one of my least favorite changes in the Special Editions. Not just because they give away his decision before the very last moment, but because it drowns out the absolutely gorgeous music. The tension building and building as you watch Vader look back and forth, hearing Luke’s agonized screams as he pleads with his father for his own sake. Then the sweeping, powerful rendition of The Force theme enters as Vader silently and heroically sacrifices his life to save his son. It is so immensely impactful to the point I’m genuinely getting a lump in my throat right now just thinking about it. It did not need either of the “no” add-ins loudly playing over the score. It spoils the moment. I’m very glad I grew up with a version before the “no” stuff was included.
The emperor couldn't comprehend love at all. That's why Vader's attack caught him off guard. If Vader attacked him from the dark side to conquer him and steal his throne the emperor would have sensed it in the dark side. The fact is that he thought Anakin was 100% gone. Vaders attack came from Anakin's resurgence and a place of love which completely blindsided him.
@@wadahtahjones8940 Agreed. I saw it when I was about 12 in the theatre, and many times since. The 'No" definitely isn't necessary, as he's showing us what he's doing. We don't need a verbalization to go along with it.
@@Myrdden71 Cinema is supposed to be more dramatic than real life. My first viewing at 14 was awesome, but on further viewings, I felt Vader's reaction was lacking. I agree, the second NOOOOOO is over the top, but the first one is wonderful--it's the first time on film we've seen Vader stand up for both someone else and himself against Palpatine, and it's powerful and shocking. After that first NO, it would be better if it was just Anakin's actions speaking as he yoiks Palpatine up like a rag doll and over the rail.
@@rikk319 True, Vader could have had a more vocal reacation. But that "Nooo" was a poor idea : A "Yes, Master" (the master being either Obi-Wan, Yoda, or even Qui-Gon) would have been loads better
Had to "peace out" from this at 5mins-ish... It was soooo much better without the "No"! Just Vader looking on, and then the music describing his turn back to the light side. That's all you needed. I got that, even watching it as a kid. You don't need every character's next intention vocalised!
"I can't leave you here, I have to save you", "you already have, you already have, tell your sister, you were right about me". Ok in the day we saw this on the bigscreen, not a dry eye in the house. in that time, all sniffling were we all. To say otherwise, means you weren't there. JMHO.
Dude, Ash missed the skull glowing while celebrating with a shirt over his head and eyes! You only get one shot to see it for the FIRST time! If anything, these compilations are fun and also get to realize how many reactors miss out on so many small moments. I dunno, Popcorn Roulette, a ton of evil people in the world are flesh and blood people just walking around too. Being all kinds of powerful (even fantastical powerful) doesn't make one invincible. But you know, somehow, whatever.
i find it hard to believe most of these reactors didn't see this before or went in knowing the ending. Even Gen Zers grew up watching these with their parents, the OG crew. Up until the mid 2010s I'd say every household had some kind of SW exposure.
The reason Vader caught Palpatine off guard is because Palpatine had too much faith in the dark side. Someone evil like him cannot comprehend the strength that can come from love and the desire to protect those you care about. This, he didn't expect Vader to turn back to the light side and didn't know what to do. He also didn't expect Vader to throw him into the reactor since Vader's suit was vulnerable to his lightning. Vader killed him even though Sidious shorted out his life support systems.
To truly understand just how huge this is, you have to first watch the prequels of Anakin's origin. "Do somethin, that's your son!" If they'd known all that Anakin did...... they'd know that he had not had any problem with it up until now.
Even though this was the edit with Vader saying no- if I am hearing it correctly, it sounds like the Jedi music very faintly before he says it so that was the clue that he would stop the emperor 👀
This scene has always fascinated me. Because, unlike you, who saw parts 1 to 3, we didn't know what power the Emperor had. The lightning that shot out of his fingers was the most devastating thing I saw in the cinema at the time. The ultimate evil!
The added "No. Nooooo!" absolutely violated the "show, don't tell" rule. This really cheapened the scene. George must think we're all drooling idiots who couldn't figure out what was about to happen. I wonder if he also thinks we need subtitles on the Alphabet song?
@michaelschroeck2254 exactly it kept you guessing like is Darth Vader going to save his son or is he really more machine than man and when he finally just picks up Darth Sidious without uttering a single word that is like epic drop the mic redemption
What these people who react don't understand is that Vader was terrified of the Emperor whose powers he had seen on several occasions. Moreover, he had to concentrate and use all his power to defeat the emperor. He couldn't have missed his shot! The girl who called Vader a coward annoyed me, I would have liked to see what she would have done in his place!
Any time a reactor called him Anakin, I knew they had seen the prequels first. When you do that, you never see Vader as menacing as we did when he was a bad guy from the outset. I think that sorta ruins his impact as an antagonist. And George Lucas adding shit to these movies is just shameful! Scene carried more weight when Vader acted silently.
The villian of a good story doesnt end the heros life in one stroke or big swoop, there is a poetic way of gloating and boasting on how I will make you hurt before you go, just so you know I am better, stronger, its is all about the arrogance + overinflated ego of major bad guys. This is why 007 villians give Bond so much time ot escape because the villains dont off the hero as quickly as they should, after all anyone can pull the trigger and BANG..that is the motive and style of a low level thug but not a major baddie.
i've always hated the added dialogue in the "special edition"... it doesn't need and has NEVER needed the "no... NOOOOOOO!!!!11!1!" that were ham-fisted in there. Vader's body language says more than enough. and besides, Palps would have heard something. it's ridiculous. it's telegraphing what's coming next in the worst way. you could *argue* that he was too wrapped up in torturing Luke to have heard, but no, i doubt it would have gone unnoticed when that 6'+ asthmatic gimp standing right next to you rumbles out something in that robot voice of his. kinda hard to miss. Vader: "no..." Palps: (stops the lighting for a second) "... I'm sorry, what was that? did you say something?" Vader: "um... nothing. forget it." Palps: "that's right, bitch!"
If Disney knows what's good for them, they'll undo most if not ALL of the Special Edition changes. Above all, the two times Vader says "No" here. Treats the audience like we're idiots.
@@lizletilburn6011 Nothing wrong with others being so heavily into it that they legit think Vader will let Luke die. You're supposed to feel the anticipation build. What George Lucas failed to realize is that the anticipation is supposed to build up until Vader himself lunges at the Emperor and NOT with Vader verbally acknowledging it right before he actually does it. * Be like instead of him saying/yelling "No!", he turns to the camera and says "Hey everybody, watch me turn against him and throw him to his death". It takes away the dramatic tension AND it also draws unnecessary attention too.
I swear, one of the worst Lucas edits was dubbing in the "No. NOOOOO" into ROTJ for the special editions. It was SOOO much more suspenseful wiithout it, where Vader just quietly grabs the emperor and yeets him. Vader's dignity took a hit with that ad in.

Okay…who else laughed hysterically at 2:23? 😂😂🤣🤣
All of their reactions are like this. These two are gold.
I felt my soul leave my body for a sec I laughed so hard, that s*it was absolutely hilarious.
Those 2 are gold 🤣🤣🤣
Nope didnt think much about it
yeah lol
The Emperor/Darth Sidious learned something new. What two letters does a person scream while falling; "I" and "E".
Kim E is me even when watching this for the 40th time, such an emotional scene. On another note I'm glad I've stuck w/ early editions of the films, so things like the added Noooo are news to me.
epic and incredibly touching moment! turns out vader has a heart after all! ❤
I saw the movie in the theater in 83. When Vader goes "Nooooo" He didn't say that in the 83 original. They added that later. 😉
No
No, that wasn’t Vader. That was Anakin fueled by love and his desire to protect those most precious to him, in this case his son. Honestly I don’t like that scene in the special edition because of the ‘No’s’ it takes away the emotion of the scene.
Emperor Palpatine is the most evil out of all the villains in cinematic history!
We the fans have to give an applaud to Ian McDiarmid playing most evil of the villains.
George did say he's basically Satan of the SW universe. There's literally no redeeming qualities about him, and everything he does only benefits him.
The prophecy said he will kill the dark Lord of the sith. And eventually the prophecy was correct
Yep. Took longer than they thought, but he fulfilled it
Whoever wrote the prophesy of the chosen one is a bit of a dick for leaving out the part where the chosen one goes Sith and puts the galaxy through two decades of misery first, then kills the dark lord.
In that scene, Darth Vader is dead, and Anakin Skywalker is alive (not for long sadly).
"Kiss my nipple" ~ Ash to Hannah.....😂
Funny, I stopped watching them when they did their Empire Strikes Back review because Hannah missed the point of, "I know." That little performance certainly makes me never want to watch them again.
Anakin kept his word to Padme many years ago. He said he is more powerful than the emperor, he can overthrow him. It just had to be over a railing
Everything that created Darth Vader was for the protection of his family. The prequels actually make this scene make so much more sense
Fun fact: That wasn’t technically Vader. That was Anakin (according to the official book version of the movie.
You forget one thing : the surprise grunt Palms pulled as Vader lifted him off the ground...
Wish I couldve seen this in theatres, what an epic moment between Luke and Vader
Vader took the full brunt of force lightening at the end and didn't even slow down. He could have clocked Palpatine any time he wanted.
Given that Palms tried to turn it all on him, hoping Anakin would stumble and let him fall. Had Anakin stumbled, Palms would have killed them both.
I will just pretend that episode 8-9 never happened.
I hate that 'no'. I have the original trilogy theatrical versions on DVD and will only ever watch those.
youre so lucky. and the final yub yub song slaps.
6:20 Yes and no, his spirit survived and was able to escape in a clone body. This is one of the best scenes in the whole franchise :)
Anikin is the prophecy, that he will bring balance to the force and he did….well, until Disney and Kathleen Kennedy got their hands on the property! 🤦♂️
Summary of the scene: Don't test anyone with their child.
That's a SPICEY MEATTAA BBBAAALLLL!!
Imagine being trained by Yoda for ages and knowing he didn't bother to mention that btw the sith have force lightning.
....or that he should never throw away his light saber. D'OH!!
I love the reactions of complete surprise, as if any of them could not see that Darth Vader intervening was not brutally obvious.
The Emperor underestimated the power of a parents love for their kids.
It's one of the only times, maybe the only time, you hear real emotion in Darth Vader's voice. "NOOOO"
Originally it was better. Vader says nothing. George changed it in the re release.
@@wadahtahjones8940 I disagree but that's just me. I saw the original in the cinema when it came out in 83 so I've seen both. No disrespect to you.
I'm kinda hooked on reaction videos recently and "kiss my nipple" is the greatest moment of them all.
Me reacting to James Earl Jones: WHY GOD!? WHY?
Everyone else reacting to James Earl Jones: DAYUM DAYUM DAYUM!
Had to "peace out" from this at 5mins-ish...
It was soooo much better without the "No"!
Just Vader looking on, and then the music describing his turn back to the light side.
That's all you needed. I got that, even watching it as a kid. You don't need every character's next intention vocalised!
That no takes it from an epic scene into a parody
I love this episode
R.I.P. to the legendary James Earl Jones the voice of a legendary figure.
Who knew that the Emperor survived that fall and has been plotting his comeback ever since?
He didn't. Neither did maul, except in bad fanfiction
He didn't.
@S.M.Jean-Mahmoud_Ier Rise Of Skywalker says otherwise
"I can't leave you here, I have to save you", "you already have, you already have, tell your sister, you were right about me". Ok in the day we saw this on the bigscreen, not a dry eye in the house. in that time, all sniffling were we all. To say otherwise, means you weren't there. JMHO.
Remember Yoda said "do not under estimate the powers of the emperor, or SUFFER your fathers FATE you will"
I honestly preferred the vhs versions, before Lucasfilm went back and added new scenes, vocals.
It was better when Vader was silent about it. The action spoke more than words could EVER convey.
Vader never said a word. Saw this opening night, and a fictional character got a standing ovation. Everyone went nuts.
i find it hard to believe most of these reactors didn't see this before or went in knowing the ending. Even Gen Zers grew up watching these with their parents, the OG crew. Up until the mid 2010s I'd say every household had some kind of SW exposure.
"I was gonna say are you sure he died, but I think that'll do it."
About that....
It took the loss of his wife to push him over the edge into becoming Darth Vader. It took the possibility of loosing his son to bring him back.
*This* is where Star Wars Ends.
*You Can't Change My Mind.*
If they ever redo the movie, I think they should have Vader use the force to retrieve Luke's lightsaber and have a proper fight with sidious.
Who was there? Loews Astro Plaza, NYC on day one?
This is who they make star wars for now dear me.
For having heard "The Emperor's Death" Clean multiple times, I can safely say there's no Force theme in until Palps is off the ground
I was reacting to this when reacting to UA-cam wasn’t even a glimmer in Vader’s eye.
This scene has always fascinated me. Because, unlike you, who saw parts 1 to 3, we didn't know what power the Emperor had. The lightning that shot out of his fingers was the most devastating thing I saw in the cinema at the time. The ultimate evil!
Sadly, Disney Star Wars made this moment of redemption irrelevant.
Darth Krispy.
They must be watching it for the first time.
I hated how they added the No! less is more in my opinion
Very nice clothes you are wearing at the outro.
i've always hated the added dialogue in the "special edition"...
it doesn't need and has NEVER needed the "no...
Vader: "no..."
Palps: (stops the lighting for a second) "... I'm sorry, what was that? did you say something?"
Vader: "um... nothing. forget it."
Palps: "that's right, bitch!"
Did the host really go there with a “shocking moment”? Good improv!!! And yes, I hated the added “No” too…
Stewie Griffin - "something something dark side"
"Something something something complete."
If Disney knows what's good for them, they'll undo most if not ALL of the Special Edition changes. Above all, the two times Vader says "No" here. Treats the audience like we're idiots.
These people certainly are 😂
@@lizletilburn6011 Nothing wrong with others being so heavily into it that they legit think Vader will let Luke die. You're supposed to feel the anticipation build. What George Lucas failed to realize is that the anticipation is supposed to build up until Vader himself lunges at the Emperor and NOT with Vader verbally acknowledging it right before he actually does it.
*
Be like instead of him saying/yelling "No!", he turns to the camera and says "Hey everybody, watch me turn against him and throw him to his death". It takes away the dramatic tension AND it also draws unnecessary attention too.
Vader could have force pulled a lightsaber to his hand and just stab Palpatine in the back with it, and have kept living.
NO and NOOOOO wasn't part of the original version, hate they added it. It was much more "oh sh!t" with Vader picking up Sidious without a word
It was so much more emotional and satisfying in the original cut when Vader just does what he does without the Nooooooooooo histrionics! 🤦♂️
