A true Land Rover rival? 2023 Jeep Grand Cherokee review: New SUV goes premium, challenges Defender!

  • After a very long wait, the 2023 Jeep Grand Cherokee five-seater has officially launched in Australia, following the Grand Cherokee L seven-seater, but doubts remain over the new-generation large SUV's ability to find anywhere near the amount of buyers as its predecessor.
Why? Well, for one the Grand Cherokee is now a lot more expensive - and we mean 'a lot'. So much so, that it now finds itself going tyre to tyre with the Land Rover Defender and not mainstream family SUVs. Land Rover is, of course, a premium brand, while the same can't be said of Jeep, despite its climbing prices.
So, in this expert review, CarsGuide News Editor Tung Nguyen tests out the new Grand Cherokee's Overland flagship, complete with a very familiar naturally aspirated petrol V6 engine, to see if it can truly justify its premium positioning.

I actually like the V6 pentastar. About 10 million have been made, they have been tested over many different jeeps and sedans. Problems have been addressed and I find the performance a great blend of smoothness, responsiveness and mileage. The reality is that in the states, 93 octane is just too expensive, maybe it changes in '24. But where I live, it is so congested and crowded that I would rarely get to really enjoy a v8 hemi.

$98k auz $ thats prado or low spec LC300 $ in the states they are backing up on the dealers lots and $1000 cash rebate , overland spec and above is the only ones with a true low range, one can order the off road group / trail rated pack with 18" off-road tires I priced it at $62230 U.S our GC trail hawk is now 4xe @$67055 U.S. lot of us are moving away from the jeep brand

A low spec LC300 goes for an additional $10,000 and you only get cloth interior, no heated / cooled / massage seats, no heated steering wheel, no air suspension, a vynil (not carpeted floor), no multi-terrain select, no trail / terrain camera, only a 9.3" infotainment screen etc. I got really excited about your comment as this is within my budget but all I would be getting is a farm truck from Toyota with a 1-2 year wait time :(

Can’t see the value at all in this. Needs a better engine for those who like a little more performance.

How anyone can afford a car like this, with all the cost of living, is beyond me. Simply not worth it. It will also devalue so much over a few years and have limited dealer support.

By the time you add in poor reliability and terrible customer service, there are very few reasons to consider buying this car.

Yes the V6 is dismal at best. Wouldn’t own this vehicle with the V6. V8 is much better with pick up and torque at almost 400 ft/lbs.
