I actually think that Kestrel was a pretty decent character despite the fact about how she raised the dod's. She was extreamly interesting to read about and I loved her backstory about Sky and Peril. Her story gave the readers (in my opinion) a little bit more to work off of about how cruel the skywings were about firescales and/ or really any powers that could spell possible doom for their kingdom. I was a little bit disapointed that she didn't get put higher but, I do understand that she treated the dod's terribly during their time under the mountain. Older fan here, just gotta say: Smolder, and specifically the Smolder+Thorn ship is refreshing for being one of the only "mature" relationships in the series. Not in the saucy way, but specifically all the other romances are presented as "puppy love", very sudden and passionate and not really based on much (except for like Clay+Peril, which also rules). By contrast Smolder and Thorn are both experienced in love, have a child from a previous serious relationship, and give each other a soft/quiet support, where they don't necessarily need to prove anything to the world. They have what seem to be healthy boundaries for each other (in another less well written series, Onyx challenging for the throne would have made Smolder immediately turncoat, and have melancholic back and forth drama where HE MUST CHOOSE OMG). On smolder himself, while he certainly could not be called heroic, he is definitely relatable. He's not an bad dude, but he does questionable things because he is in a world that has deadly consequences for standing up for himself, as proven (to him) by what happened when he was even secretly defiant with his baby mama. While most of us don't have that level of pressure (or those kind of crazy choices to make), we can all gel at least a little bit with being in a circumstance where doing the right thing is very hard, and we sometimes can't muster up the courage to do it in the face of society. He can do better, he'd like to do better, and is kind when life allows, but trauma and circumstance hold him back a bit more than is ideal.

Winter is my absolute favorite character so I’m excited to see him ranked, my second favorite character ever is actually Sky, but I see a LOT of people hating Sky so I was pleasantly surprised to see him ranked so high! I love him
12:21 Hey JMA, what happened to Undauntable btw? As someone who adored his character and liked the theory about him being Bandit (more about that later), I certainly would like to know what happened to him 👀. Also theory time. So some people believe that Bandit's true identity is Prince Undauntable. While it isn't exactly direct evidence to support it, there are some rather interesting clues to suggest this could be plausible. If we consider the ominous ending of Dragonslayer and Bandit's introduction in Moon Rising, Bandit is described as "exotic" by Winter's standards. Granted, this could just be Winter fanboying over his pet but remember this detail for later. Throughout Moon Rising, Bandit pretty much does nothing of value, other than lazing around, eating Berries from Kinkajou, and having a moment of Sympathy from Moon, Bandit is pretty much like every typical scavenger we saw from that point. However, let's take a moment from the graphic novel. In the graphic novel, we see Bandit oddly wearing pale-orange clothing that resembles a robe and his face happens to be round-shaped (though this could just be how Mike Holmes designed him). In Dragonslayer, we see a character who oddly matches this description: Undauntable! Wren describes our boy as having a moon-shaped face and wearing pale orange robes because he is royalty. Coincidence? I THINK NOT! And it gets even better. In Escaping Peril, Peril happens to notice a sad-looking scavenger wearing orange clothing, riding on a camel. Along this scavenger happens to be a group of humans traveling and guess where we see humans again? Back in Qibli's book, Darkness Of Dragons! Considering Tui like to have connections in her storytelling, it's pretty much safe to assume that the scavengers we see in Vulture's Maze are the same ones we see in Peril's stories. I summarize that Undauntable has decided to escape his city and risk himself to forward Wren about his dad's intentions for her. However, during his travels, he gets captured by Winter and ends up becoming his pet. Failing in his quest, Undauntable's spirit is broken, and he is isolated. I like to think Tui could use this as development for Undauntable since it's made rather clear that he is an abused child, is looked down upon by many, and is lonely. But this would make sense considering Bandit was fed dead rats and humans obviously can't eat raw meat. Anyway, the final piece of the puzzle is Bandit not willing to leave Winter's cage. If we consider Bandit to be Undauntable, then this would make the most sense because Undauntable lacks knowledge of survival. So in conclusion, I think Tui is setting up a redemption arc for Undauntable. He goes to Jade Mountain during his search for Wren, and we learn about his problems, he is freed by Winter and comes across a group of people, he enters Vulture's palace and most likely learns the sad truth about human nature and what life is like outside his city and gets rescued by Winter and Qibli. This moment inspires Undauntable knowing that there is some good in dragons and he matures. Instead of being like Wren who outcasted humanity, Undauntable decides he would help make peace with both species since the two are the same and goes on a different quest: to seek a way of becoming The Undauntable Lord and to help create a paradise for all of dragon and humankind. I get S1 Prince Canute/S3 Prince Zuko vibes from Undauntable and honestly, I am down with this and hope this theory comes true. LET HIM COOK, TUI!!!
Hahaha, I forgor his audio so I skipped him in the visuals - he will be on the final list though! What a crazy theory this would be though. It would be so cool if it was true!
Really interesting how people don't like Cattail for being the perfect MudWing mother. She did absolutely nothing wrong. Maybe through the view of other cultures, it feels wrong, but to MudWings, it's how they live their life.
Well, people might also not like Cattail because she was kind of rude. Clay was obviously unaware of MudWing cultural norms, so she could've acted a bit more considerate towards him instead of brushing him off. People hating her for just being a MudWing doing MudWing things is unfair, though.
i think a lot of people rate characters based on how much they like them and not based on how good of a character/how well written they are, so whenever a character is meant to be hated, they get low ratings even if they are an objectively well written character.
@@Lookink54-utagreed. Same with characters like Smolder who get put in tiers they don’t belong just because of positive association to an objectively good character (thorn in smolders case). I just about died when that idiot got put in a tier 😭😭😭
Unfortunately I was unable to rank the characters, as trouble with my device kept me from accessing the form. However, it was so fun to see everyone’s opinions on these characters!
I really want a canon event where Sky and Peril finally meet. Then one day all of the DoD meet up bringing along their partners, and Peril (Clay’s gf) decides to bring Sky and Wren along so Wren can finally see Murderbasket again. OKAY, BUT THAT SCENE WHERE SHE STABS HIM IN THE TALON WAS ACTUALLY SO FUNNY. HE WAS SO FRICKING SHOCKED. 😭
Preyhunter be like : *cough*, *cough* am I a joke to you? Is it because I’m dead? Like I mean I wasn’t a super amazing character but like, even Fierceteeth and Strongwings were on there 😢
I’m so glad Glacier made it as high as she did. I think she was the only one of the reigning arc one queens who was actually a good queen. Scarlet was insane, Coral was really awful to her guards and kinda her tribe in general, the RainWing queens were… themselves… the SandWing sisters only cared about themselves and not the good of the tribe or continent for that matter, Moorhen I admit we didn’t see much of but she didn’t seem to care about the major losses her tribe was enduring nor the insanity of her allies. Battlewinner is honestly the only other queen I would argue was remotely alright, given that while the invasion and takeover of the rainforest was an awful plan morally, she was pretty forced into it. It was go to somewhere safe on the mainland or face the complete annihilation of her tribe. Glacier, above all the others, was shown to have a love of her family and her tribe as a whole. She allied with the most “stable” SandWing Queen and was doing at least a little to teach Blaze to be a strong queen. Yes she got murder-y at times, but considering what we know of the IceWing crown, is that surprising?
Also, I'm pretty sure that if Sutherland rewrote the book today, she'd change the epilogue of book 4 so that Glacier doesn't casually say she'll murder the dragonnets if they don't support Blaze. I think Sutherland decided to make Glacier a more positive character only in Winter's Turning. Before that, she was just another generic evil queen.
Agreed, though I'll also say that Glacier's remarks at the end of book 4 played the primary role of creating tension for book 5 - a form of cliffhanger setting up the finale. We needed to see that all three of the SandWing sisters were going to make the DoD's goal difficult if not impossible to accomplish. I'm not sure how many other ways to do that with Blaze would have worked without Glacier being willing to... take matters into her own hands.

I honestly don't know HOW Flame ranked so low. He was honestly one of the best written side characters. I feel like at the very least he should've been able to get A Low A
I mean, he was kind of just a massive hothead who hates anyone who had any remote connection to his misfortunes. And he was a jerk even before he got the scar his face. And nothing else really comes out of his character. There’s also his love for his mother but that doesn’t really go for much of anything.
@@TrickyTalon23 I'd like to disagree. (This is going to be a bit, so if you don't wanna read it all, there'll be a TD;DR at the end, but I think it would be worth a read, just for my point of view. Like a lot of the false DOD, Flame just wanted to live with his family, so when he was taken by the NightWings and then forced to go to school both against his will, of course he'd be a bit hotheaded. We've seen moments when he hasn't been hotheaded, mostly when he was told he might have a chance to go back home/get out of the NightWing island in Book 4. in Book 6, he was one of the calmest people, and only got upset when he sensed someone in his mind that wasn't him. In Books 9 and 10, he was imprisoned for trying to kill Stonemover, but it's heavily hinted in the books that Darkstalker controlled Flame to do that when he healed his face because he wanted to either get rid of competition or have an excuse to use magic on Stonemover and be able to control him later while he did so. If he was *really* upset at Stonemover, his first instinct would've likely been to kill Stonemover when he was given the ring to be freed from prison, since again, he said he wished he thought of the bombs, because then he'd brag about it. Instead, he just immediately goes back home, because that's what he's wanted from the beginning. He never wanted to be at the school. He never wanted the NightWings to kidnap him and almost kill him. The book shows and states that all he wants is to go back home, and to be taken seriously. In fact, when he does wish he had set off the bomb to kill people, Moon reads in his mind that he only wishes that because he wants to be taken seriously. He's just a dragon who's misunderstood, both by readers and by other dragons in the books. TL;DR Flame isn't as hotheaded as many people perceive him as, and he had many great reasons to be upset. He's just a dragon who misses home and wants to be taken seriously
Eh, I feel like Flame has a bit of missed potential... I would've liked to see him develop more. Luckily, though, the WoF fandom is on top of that 😌✨️I love the fandom versions of him.
Dude umber is one of the most underrated charecters in the book like literally, my top question is after I read all the arcs WHAT HAPPENED TO UMBER & SORA like we didn’t hear from them at all after book 6. And I’m curious to know what happened to them,, maybe they went back to queen moorhens palace or somewhere far from icicle? But ngl I also think umber, kinkajou and riptide deserve their own books. 1. I want to know what happened to umber and Sora 2. Kinkajou REALLY deserves her own pov. 3. Maybe it can show riptides adventures of being the new leader of the talons of peace?
Im surprised sora and umber are so night, isn’t sora literally “one who is not what she seems” other than that I think clay and starflight deserve to be higher but 3-4 spots.

@@pyronuke4768 yeah, but it’s understandable. Tui just completely forgot about the character development he went through in his pov book 7, which ended in him staying put in his frowned upon role as Moon’s school bully. It’s actually sad, he could have been an good, likeable character with better writing
@@FIamboyancewell for me, Winter was really interesting in the first half of the arc. In Moon rising he's introduced as the bully character, but through Moon's mind reading we find his rough exterior stems from his self-loathing and lack of social skills, and deep down he yearns to be a person who's worthy of love and respect. The classic Jerk-with-a-heart-of-gold trope. In Winter Turning we get a deeper dive into his psyche. He feels like he's always in someone else's shadow, and he spends the entire book trying to prove himself. In the meantime he starts to realize Icewing society isn't all that it's cracked up to be and that the mentality he was raised with is actually pretty toxic. In the end he renounces his tribe, frees Foeslayer, and heads off to reunite with his Winglet, something he never would have done at the beginning of the book. It's actually some really well written and realistically paced character development. ...And then he spends the second half of the arc faceplanting down a staircase because Tui hadn't planned what to do with Winter after this and just reverted him to being the bully character to create friction with whoever the current book's POV was. At this point Winter's character was still kinda salvageable, but then in the rushed climax of Darkness of Dragons he gets thrown under the bus for plot conveniences. Watching this character who started off with a ton of potential take L after L just makes me wanna reach into the pages and give him a hug.
@@pyronuke4768 Interesting. Many of Winter L’s are of his own doing canonically, but I blame them on Tui rushing. Even as a Qibli fan and Moonbli shipper who was rooting against Winter for all of arc 2, I still wanted him to be happy. Maybe his character arc will redeem itself in a possible book 16, idk. All I do know is that his poorly thought out role in books 8-10 kind of overwhelmed the promise that he showed in 6-7, and left a sour taste in my mouth after finishing arc 2. I only wish his story lived up to its A+ tier potential, but I honestly can’t give him anything higher than low-mid B+ tier.

Winter is my absolute favorite character so I’m excited to see him ranked, my second favorite character ever is actually Sky, but I see a LOT of people hating Sky so I was pleasantly surprised to see him ranked so high!
I love him
Winter's my favorite too.
:D
The Simpsons style for Heath was great, I have no idea where you got the image but it was hilarious.
It's from Disenchantment haha, I'm glad you liked it!
Glory deserved to be in S tier.Deathbringer would agree😅
Really interesting how people don't like Cattail for being the perfect MudWing mother. She did absolutely nothing wrong. Maybe through the view of other cultures, it feels wrong, but to MudWings, it's how they live their life.
Oi.
Would you like your mom if she sold you for a few cows?
Sometimes people just love hating on a character because everyone else does
Great point! Cultural lenses really do be out there.
Well, people might also not like Cattail because she was kind of rude. Clay was obviously unaware of MudWing cultural norms, so she could've acted a bit more considerate towards him instead of brushing him off. People hating her for just being a MudWing doing MudWing things is unfair, though.
@@randomperson-kx6mv That's a fair point.
Morrowseer is underrated imo, D tier is way too low. He should've atleast been rated higher than blister.
Agreed he is my favorite villain. I could write a long paragraph about what makes him such a great antagonist.
Ikr, he’s definitely one of the most well written villains in the series
i think a lot of people rate characters based on how much they like them and not based on how good of a character/how well written they are, so whenever a character is meant to be hated, they get low ratings even if they are an objectively well written character.
@@Lookink54-utagreed. Same with characters like Smolder who get put in tiers they don’t belong just because of positive association to an objectively good character (thorn in smolders case). I just about died when that idiot got put in a tier 😭😭😭

Also, have you read the first 17 pages of Guide to the Dragon World?
Nope!
@@JadeMountainArchiveYou should!
@JadeMountainArchive
Yeah, you really should, the little we got was quite interesting!
I do want that two, but I want them to realize their siblings too.
We all know that queen moorhen is one the most underrated queen
Family reunion with blister blaze and burn at 2:29😂
I’m so sad I missed the form 😂
Fav character though is Freedom! (arc 3)
Respect that opinion! Freedom had a legendary character arc 🔥
@@FIamboyance I know right! She’s awesome. Wish we could have more from her, but she did what had to be done. 🫡

Man what a great JMA love the tier list so far can’t wait for part two
Also I recently found out Smolder has a daughter if you didn’t know her names is onyx if you did know then that’s ok but I’m still surprised that she is Smolders daughter
Also if it’s not to much to ask will willow heart join you in the next one
That’s all I have to say hope your having good day or night bye now #JMbli
Interesting point hahaha - I hadn't considered that connection before. Makes it extra interesting when Onyx tries to kill Thorn in book 10!
It is so cute how Sky and Peril ended up right next to each other!
I havent seen the video yet, but i alreay know people are gonna underrate Morrowseer
Magnificent is the embodiment of the rainwing stereotype
Princess Greatness is called Somptueuse in the french version. Tbh, I think that fits the character better.
I’m so happy!
finally pointed out that coral is such a bad queen! Like I thought I was the only person who realized “Hey she isn’t really good but more half bad”. But in arc 2 she got better.
I liked her a lot more in book 9 because we could finally see how she treated Turtle, and how much she loved him.

JMA about Tui writing more
Rumour has it that book 16 is coming out Oct 3, I’ve heard a few people talking about it and it does say on Google but I haven’t seen/heard about any cover art. I’m not sure if it’s just to early for Tui to reveal it but we’ll just have to keep our talons crossed
I think you're talking about the Field Guide, which releases October 3rd. Some art from it has leaked, and it looks absolutely gorgeous!
@@randomperson-kx6mv oh awesome thanks for clearing that up for me
Anemone saved the wof fandom by killing whirlpool, we need to give her more love.

Yeah but she was kinda a jerk in the second arc
No the eels did she only helped them
Okay, honestly, i agree with almost all of these placements.
Though pretty much everyone but cattail, wh.rlpool and Coconut i kinda love as a character, because i can see why They make their choices.
Lets gooo my boi Starflight got A tier, I am too much of a Starflight fan lmao-

Yes! Another tier list!
Yes! Glory, you go girl! You are the Queen! (Literally)
Thanks for the break-down, I like him too!
1. I want to know what happened to umber and Sora
2. Kinkajou REALLY deserves her own pov.
3. Maybe it can show riptides adventures of being the new leader of the talons of peace?
All of them? Can't wait for Qibli to be rated

S+ tier should be made and reserved for our Best Boi.
6:13 Hey we can’t forget her character development in book 9. And it even gives us a better vision of her being herself at the end of book ten
Im surprised sora and umber are so night, isn’t sora literally “one who is not what she seems” other than that I think clay and starflight deserve to be higher but 3-4 spots.
@_chxrrxx it could be many characters, Sora, pyrite, onyx, moon, peril, icicle, or even anemone

We all know qibli is gonna be the highest ranked but I think winter deserves to be in A+ honestly
Really? Could u explain a bit more why I’m curious
I agree. I feel like a decent portion of the fandom are turned off by his attitude and don't take the time to connect with him.
