  • As we enter the 4th quarter of our homeschool year, I wanted to give you an update on all the curriculum and courses we have been doing this year. In this video series, I'll share what my teens and I have thought of each subject, what worked and what didn't, and our overall ratings. In this fifth and final video of the series, I'm discussing our Electives which includes Philosophy, Nutrition and Fitness, and Chemistry in the Kitchen (Food Science on our transcripts).

Thanks for sharing! The Chemistry in the Kitchen will be perfect for my oldest son who is going into his junior year next year. He's not strong in math or science, loves cooking, and likely won't pursue any careers that are heavy in math or science.

Thank you for this detailed breakdown. I've been interested in the Chemistry in the Kitchen in a similar way, as an elective rather than our main Chemistry. One thing I have been wondering about it is whether or not most of the recipes are sugar-heavy. Thank you!

It’s a good mix of recipes. Cheese, breads, meats, sweets, etc. Little bit of everything

Hi Abby! Did you get a printables packet with your Guest Hollow download? We are doing Chemistry in the Kitchen next year, and there’s a lab form like you describe in the printables packet 😊

I did see that included in the printables. And while it does have spots to record the concept covered, I think I’m just still stuck on how I’ve always done chemistry labs (hypothesis, results, analysis, discussion) and wanted to merge it with the cooking projects. The printable is a good starting point though. When I have some spare time maybe I can whip up a PDF of more what I’m thinking to add to my homeschool resources.

We are going to do Guest Hollow’s ‘Chemistry in the Kitchen’ alongside ‘Chemistry’ by Gather Round. I believe Gather Round has a Student Lab Notebook supplement broken down exactly as you mentioned. I’ll be sure to include it while doing the recipes. Thanks again for the heads up!! 😊

This would count as a science with lab credit, correct?

Yes, there are definitely enough recipes/experiments to give lab credit for the course
