Oh man... I envy you. This is a really cool build and I've always dreamed of building a high-performance Socket A-based Win98 machine, but I was always put off by the 5V rail issue, especially when pairing with power-hungry graphics cards.

socket A is really quick on the single core which pushes minecraft to a playable level my pentium 4s don't typically do, the corsair psu I used is basically an older model that has a stronger rail, solving that issue,
if it ever interests you, I do run a discord full of hardware/retro enthusiasts, some of which with 3dfx collections bigger than my house, and experimental prototype cards as well
currently our project has been trying to get IPX networking to work between modern pcs and dos/win 95/98 ones, and, its been working so far, we partnered with Brain Drain LAN recently

Basically what you’ll end up with if you try to build your gaming pc for pocket change, luckily, i resurrected kali.net and my video is featured there, which means online gaming is back on windows 98, any game that doesn’t typically work without a LAN party, command and conquer, Star Wars monopoly, deathdrome, it now works again, so retro online gaming is viable again

I do, I think that pentium 4s are decent for that, but socket a has better 98 driver support usually, I've done one recently with socket 775 and core 2 duo e6600 w 6800 xt, but 98 really doesn't need this, my ideal system with 98 is the one here: ua-cam.com/video/gqt0pL_OnMo/v-deo.html
So to get java 8 to work do I have to install kernelex and the 2019 update then install java 6 and update it to java 8?

would be terrible, unless using PCEM, even then, IPX networking would probably have bugs in emulation

Im running windows 98SE, Windows ME, and Windows 7 with ASROCK 4CoreDual-SATA2,
Intel Core 2 Duo E8600 SLB9L 3.33GHz 6MB L2 Cache Socket LGA 775,
BFG Tech NVidia GeForce 7950 GT OC 512M PCI-E x16,
Sound Blaster Audigy2 ZS and a Aureal Vortex 2 A3D PCI sound card. I have the 3DFX wrapper and EMBM Environmental Bump Mapping working.
thats very insane, for 98 I can imagine that might hurt some compatibility but having that 3dfx wrapper is probably handy, I've found that certain chipsets like socket a and 440bx are more of a sweetspot for 98 recently,
@@psychoticgiraffe Well yes, I had my Phil of P4 AGP 7900 GS but then tried for sata, pcie 7950, and 1gb ddr2. The Asrock has all working win98 drivers and pci slots for sound cards. It allowed agp or pcie video cards. I could have both if needed.
The Geforce 6800 supports DirectX 9.0c, install that and nGlide version 1.05 and you can then play many of the Windows 98 games supporting Direct 3D, Open GL, and Glide games also. The limitation for complete compatibility however lies in the choice of the graphics card, that driver he installed will render many Windows 95, and 98 games unplayable as you need older drivers to make them run properly without artifacts and other glitches. If he had chosen the FX5700, with 256mb of ram, and 128 bit interface, DirectX 9.0a, and used driver version 56.64, then he would have had no issues.......that's what I did, that and nGlide 1.05 I can play about 100 +/- Windows 95/98 games with no issues, save for the odd patch required, and many games require patches to run properly, no matter what the operating system is! Some of the titles shown, like Serious Sam, run better on Windows XP, which is where I run mine on a high end Windows XP system.
I've used that but found that it had some bugs, either way though it works on most of the games so it's pretty solid. I can't use 56.64 as it needed to run halo

yes, it is. however, I usually find that the fx 5700-5950, geforce 6200, geforce 4 ti 4200, and voodoo 3 3000 are the minimum reccomended cards for various eras of games, the 9200 sits in a strange spot on that, worse than geforce 4 but better than voodoo, but doesnt do glide, so its not as good for the older of the old games that use glide.

this one here is athlon xp 3200+, geforce 6800 agp 128mb, 1gb ram, 120gb ssd, promise tx150 sata controller, corsair 650w psu, floppy drive, cd drive, vanguard rgb case
this is probably the most unstable windows 98 pc i have, it works but it goes very fast for 98, hence why i could get minecraft to run,
for a 98 system i usually advise to use 440bx chipset or tualatin instead for compatibility, but if balls to the wall 98 build is your thing try making something like this maybe a p4 board with agp and 98 drivers could work as well, or perhaps even a core 2 duo board if it has 98 drivers.
That's like my build, I like to use AMD cpu's in retro PC's.

Just a heads up for anyone building a socket A machine, you need a power supply with a -5v rail especially if the board only has a 20 pin ATX connector.
does it actually? this one doesn't have a -5v rail, but it has a strong 5v rail though
I don’t think yoo need -5v for socket A. It’s important for 386 & 486 and even then only for certain sound cards.

So, SDD’s are I think slower for windows 95 or windows 98 and so on, I don’t think this occurs on windows vista tho
SSDs are much faster for 3.1/95/98/xp than HDDs are, this is incorrect.
in the video or previous one I show the read write speeds as around 90-100 mb per second average, which is much faster than any IDE drive or CF card can do
I've not tried using a board that has native SATA with 98 though, but it would be sata 1 if it supported 98 so the speed wouldn't go any more than 133 and a spinning HDD tends to bench pretty poorly compared to the nonstop speed of the SSD;
The problem you might be referring to is a lack of TRIM, if you overfill an SSD you might notice slowdowns on older pre XP OSes
however, my solution to that was just to save about 4gb of empty space that isn't allocated on the drive, and to partition it into an 8gb and 108gb partiton so that it doesn't degrade as much, my ssd also has garbage collection automatically
this solves those issues for the most part;
hence the fast boot time. and file transfer speeds (far beyond the 33mb/s top of an IDE drive on average)

I'm trying to do the same with that sata pci card, how did you configure it to take the windows 98 ssd?
you use the bios on the SATA card to format the drive, go to fdisk, initialize partitions, sometimes you must use easeuspartitionmaster to add addtional partitions if the drive is too big, 128 and below is suggested

Hey ! New Subscriber here ! Just curious, and this is probably a noob question but... How are you able to run Doom 3 so well if its not compatible? I've seen other videos on UA-cam from ppl playing Doom 3 on their windows 98 machine and it looks horrible... Your's looks like the way it should be played. Thanks !
doom 3 requires patching to run in 98, the installer tries to stop it from running unless you patch it or mess with the ini file, LGR also did the patch to make it run he has a video showing it working

@@LoftyCrofty if its a custom built, the motherboard inside the case and graphics card have labels or numbers usually, if its not, the model number of the PC is somewhere on it or the name (hp pavilion e555) or whatever

How did you get Minecraft 1.14.4 to run it needs java 8 I managed to get 1.11.2 working the last version that supports java 6
I was actually able to force java 8 to install with kernelex 2019 rev, it does not work with standard kernelex because it needs some system files to be able to run java 8, but kernelex 2019 rev was able to bypass it, note: that revision is rather unstable so do it right after a fresh install, not after you've installed 100 games, its only safe if you do it after a perfect clean install of 98 se

How do you browse with opera in win98? I couldn't browse with most browsers on Win vista a year ago.

Awesome build. How long to source the parts? I have an audigy2 zs in my x2 2.6 xp/win7 build with a 9800gtx+ and 4 gigs, trying to source 2 more gigs. Its hard to find 2-3-2-5 ddr400.
I’d say about 2 weeks to source the correct parts, but due to this video, using some of the links in description I think most people could do it in under a week now, I also did all the necessary research to insure an install is optimized for 98, this one can do both xp and 98

@lively nic I am not sure what is wong with my PC. It turns on but my moniter doesn;t recongize that i plugged the vga cable into in. im not sure if its the moniter that doesnt work, the cord, or the PC.
u gotta test a bunch of different things to diagnose it
unplug the pc and hold power for a minute, try plugging it back in, make sure the vga cable is properly connected securely on both sides,
try using only one stick of ram, cleaning it out of any dust with compressed air
check for any busted capacitors
error codes, beeps, etc
different monitor;
if you continue having same issue after the above try a different video card inside; if that still doesn't fix the issue, then your board is probably fried
you can replace the motherboard in that case and see what happens

You made a Windows 98 system to play Windows XP games? 98 games: Diablo, Commandos, Thief, Incoming, etc.
many of those I consider bordering on being windows 95 games but this is a 98 system meant to handle the full spread of games compatible with 98, however it does cancel out some 95 compatible games since a wrapper is needed for glide support on those early 3d games, hence why I've got two 98 systems, this one meant for the top end and the other one with voodoo 2 sli for that gap this doesnt hit
@@psychoticgiraffe For the spread of compatibility, my preference, is to split games pre and post XP. The hardware available for XP is vastly superior able to run GTX 670 as on my LGA 775 XP machine, modded drivers a 980ti even works. Crazy powerful and cost effective. Also google PC Games released 1998, great way to remember what the hell I was playing twenty years ago.
Currently, I've three 90s systems running. The AMD K6-III is the 98 experience, ATI rage and dual creative voodoo 2s and a SB live.
My other 98 systems are more like what you've shown, a P4 and an Athlon. What I finally ended up making??? finally?? is a Machine ~1990/4 to 2000. The XP machine 2000/1-2008/9

Do I need a specific mouse for the Windows 98?
you should have a ps/2 mouse on hand just incase your board doesn't auto detect usb ones, but many bios emulate ps/2 and will work with usb; ie: not really but get a ps/2 mouse as a backup if the usb one needs installation

Have we tried Striped SSDs with the SATA Controller? Might be overkill if it's possible, but, with "Ultimate" being in bold choice for a title for Windows 98, if there's anywhere we can make a system more responsive and anymore overkill, I'm interested in knowing.
440bx is basically the most stable 98 chipset, yes the controller is designed to be able to run striped, if you put two drives in it can do raid0, I've not found any reason to do such though; the only two things I haven't done for this system is try using a Slotket with a Tualatin 1.4ghz p3, or try raid0
reason I didn't do the slotket is because of stability concerns and requiring a specific one to actually do it.
there is a part 2 though where I upgrade a few parts of this later on my channel;
if someone actually sends me a slotket with the correct type for tualatin, I would give it a shot, but for such a meager speed improvement over the 1ghz I didn't think 600 dollars was worth it.
raid0, I've used it on this controller before, but I've not thoroughly tested it, I might at some point delve into that more

That’s basically what I was back when this was put out, but this system actually ran minecraft a lot better than the core 2 system did and my configuration was a lot more stable, kept this one running for a year before decomissioning it
Very nice build! One question why didn't you install the sound card in the bottom PCI slot and the low profile Linksys WIFI in its place? Wouldn't the 6800GT would breath much better that way?
IRQ conflicts in DOS, when you set video card slot 1, sound card slot 2, DOS cooperates better, now, if you had an ISA sound card, then this wouldn't be the case, but I'm using one that isn't typically used with DOS, hence the reason for that, I'd get issues when I put it in a bottom slot. temps were only about 65c on load which didn't seem bad

How did you get the SSD working with Win98? Was it just like any other hdd?
the raid controller has its own bios, and no it doesn't work same way since sata doesnt have slave or master
but basically you tell the raid controller to recognize the disk and then fdisk it and format then install
for stability sake i put a 8gb partition then the rest as a secondary

I didn't bother doing that in the video because this system was able to run far cry which is far more demanding on high settings
and quake 3 arena at like 300 fps

@@cutflow2 something like 250-300 bucks, the power supply was the largest hit to the budget, mainly because Socket A eats the 5v rail, in all honesty the psu i use in the video is the bare minimum for socket A on that rail. they actually suggest 50A on the 5V

Do you use the service pack 3? It seams to screw up my installation on my two win 98 machines and they keep crashing. I cant load DOS ither afterwords. One of my PC:s is also an athlon xp3200
no, that service pack sucks and while some of the pieces of the pack are useful, the whole pack just crashes stuff and only works properly on i5/i7

@@gorbynr1 minimal patches, primarily just the odyssey WPA2 wifi tool, speedtest.net network patch that uncaps the network speed for downloads, dx8 (skip dx9 if possible, in my case I couldn't skip it because of certain games wanting it), kernelex (I don't actually use the features of this, but it needs to be installed to launch minecraft etc), thats about it

Athlon XP 3200+ ? It says 3000+ in windows. Maybe the wrong fsb set.
It’s a finicky board, I had to manually overclock it because of the fsb and it identifies it wrong, but it’s running at the speed of the 3200+ hence the minecraft performance
