Gaston is what Beast would have been if he was never punished, he has basically been shaped all of his life to be a narcissist and that is the fault of the town people who in my opinion are the cruelest mfs ever, these people willingly teamed up with Gaston simply because Gaston was insanely charismatic, and that is what makes him scary, he might lack education, but his natural manipulation and gaslighting are something that an idiot would not think off, he is a briber and a schemer, he might lack education but he is an intimidating presence

What's sad is some of Gaston's character traits can be found in a genuine leader. His strength, bravery, charisma and general ability to rally people behind him are leader-like traits. Gaston could have been a great leader if he didn't have the one trait that makes a Disney villain: He was selfish.

@@everlastingdragon4520 Yeah, it's what separates characters like Cinderella from Lady Tremaine or Ariel from Ursula. And Gaston is no exception. He selfishly believes Belle should be his wife. He doesn't care about her opinions on the matter. Same with the Beast. To an extent, he became a less selfish person over the course of the movie. But Gaston, not so much.

Gaston is a perfect representation of just because you’re handsome doesn’t mean you’re a good person, it’s not you’re looks that make you who you are, it’s what you do to others that make you who you are.
The beast and Gaston represent two kinds of people
The first is someone who started off as a selfish asshole and regrets their past actions, while they can be bitter sometimes they still have a big glowing heart within and they’re willing to change for the better. They eventually grow as a person and become better than who they were in the past.
The second is just a selfish asshole all the way through, nothing but a cold stone heart . No regards for others, treats others like shit to get their own way, manipulative, thinks they’re untouchable and above everyone else. They’ll also do anything to keep their pride and fulfill their ego they inevitably destroy themselves
It’s like that riddle from the end of hunchback of Norte dame.

What I love most about Gaston and honestly about Beauty and The Beast is how filled the movie is with parallels and foils, but Gaston and Beast’s is my favorite parallel dynamic. Beast is more human than any beast and Gaston is more beast than any human. Beast actually grows as a person and becomes more generous, affectionate, and caring of others, whereas Gaston swirls deeper into his selfishness, his desires, his ego, his pride, and even stoops so low as to scheme throwing Belle’s father in an asylum to get her to marry him.
Simple, but effective writing. These juxtaposed characters just makes the film all that more compelling and impactful for me, and will forever stand as a crown jewel among Disney’s films imo. It’s a top 5 Disney movie for me no doubt.

    • @a.jthomas6132
      @a.jthomas6132 5 місяців тому +11

Couldn't agree with you more. The parallel of these two characters (Gaston and the Beast) fits perfectly but in the opposite direction each are taking.
I feel more related to the Beast in some ways as I got older. I was a spoiled brat in my teen years and a bit of a hotheaded since I had a bit an emotional temper. Even I had troubles getting along with my old man just like the 2019 live action remake since he likes to yell at and takes his own problems on me for no damn reasons. But as I got older, I became a bit selfless, more generous, and more concern of other people's wellbeing. Even I tried my best to not end up like my father regardless of growing up without one.
Beauty and the Beast have been one of my favorite Disney movie from childhood.

  • @a.jthomas6132

His unhealthy obsession with Belle and jealousy of the Beast being with her had become Gaston’s downfall.
If you remembered what the old lady (the Enchantress in disguise) from the prologue narration, she stated to the Prince to not be deceived by appearances 'for beauty is found within'. Belle sees that through the Beast whom has a warmth heart in the end. But Gaston is more rotten to the core ( a hunter with an idiotic nature whom is hunting for another trophy) and thinks about his own self image as a beauty in perfection (mostly his love for himself). Plus, he is very narcissist who sees himself as superior to everyone around him and Gaston is the embodiment of toxic masculinity.
In my humble opinion, I would considered Gaston to be among the best Disney villains since Jafar, Maleficent, Judge Doom, Scar, Oogie Boogie, Judge Claude Frollo, Yokai, Ursula and Cruella De Vil.

What makes it even worse is that some people in the internet defend this prick. Saying Belle would be better off with Gaston than with the Beast. NO SHE WOULD NOT!!!
Already he was stomping through her boundaries, insulted her hobby, never taking the hint she was not interested, and tried to force her to follow his wants and desires. And when that didn't work, plotted to threaten her father to force her into obeying. He is a hunter and a predator. She was a trophy and his prey. And with the entire village lapping up his every word and action, she would have been trapped. Whether the Beast existed or not.

Wait people defend Gaston Does this have anything to do with the stupid Stockholm syndrome thing. Yes they fell in love with that context in the background and I can see where the line is blurred. But there is a deleted scene which they hopefully kept in the movie on Disney+ that kind of fixes this by adding the additional 10 minutes showing them bonding in the library. But first off she willingly chose to be prisoner so her father could get home and get some medical help. And him changing his ways helping her When she immediately took off the first time. Is how they started becoming friends. And then he lets her go and she leaves. Kingdom hearts two points this out but she does not know the significance of the rose or the curse on them. And it’s pink and escalated as quickly as they did maybe she would’ve gone back to visit once her father was better

Gaston is a deconstruction of the Disney Heroes we have seen like Prince Eric or Prince Philip, and also a dark parody of a fairy tale prince:
-Gaston, on paper, has everything to be the hero: He is tall, handsome, beloved by the town, charismatic and skilled with weapons, who tries to woo the lovely maiden and rescue her from the evil monster so he could win her heart. However, those qualities have given him a massive sense of ego and believes himself entitled to Belle, even though Belle is not remotely interested in him at all. He looks the part, but his personality is far from being heroic: He is cruel, narcissistic, entitled, misogynistic, manipulative and brutish, trying to murder a sapient being out of jealousy and his sidekick, Lefou (who in a traditional fairy tale would act as the moral conscience of Gaston) enables him on a perpetual basis, allowing him to be an abusive brute.

Your dissection reminds me of when I was recently viewing a YT short on the Theology of the Body Institute’s channel, and a commenter asked to define “toxic masculinity”. I tried to create my own definition, which fits the intended connotation/scenarios, provides some concrete substance in its wording, and incidentally could describe Gaston’s character:
“A set of behaviors in which one seeks to greatly emulate certain qualities traditionally admired in men, such as being authoritative, handsome, bold, physically strong, and carnally passionate, while egregiously lacking in virtues needed to properly order them, such as humility, wisdom, self-discipline, gentleness, restraint from aggression, chastity, and respect towards women.”

Gaston and Frolo are some of the best villains as they represent some of the worst characteristics of human nature, greed, Vanity, Lust, prejudice and and intolerance, this is why is so easy to hate them but what makes them some of our favorites is that despite all these negative aspects they still have a lot of charm and intelligence to manipulate anyone even the audience watching, this also makes me appreciate a little more the other human villains in Disney who not get as much love as these 2, Mother Gothel who is an underrated amazing villain with her manipulation controlling Rapunzel almost entire life, have a little of Gaston in her main negative human aspect is her vanity for stay young forever and is willing to go to any extreme for keep it that way..... Clayton, Ratcliffe and Rourke are on the aspect of GREED as money and fame and pride are their main human negatives these display and all 3 use deception to manipulate their way to get what they dean priceless, Clayton capture the rare apes to sell them, Ratcliffe his desire to find gold, and Rourke who wants the Atlantis technology and power to sell it for profit and can't care less who gain that power as long he gets his money, man These villains are a bit more complex people give them credit to and I think Gaston was the architect for many of these great and underrated Disney villains.

This just came to me but one of the reasons the enchantress cursed the servants, as well.
    Was so they couldn't leave.
If everyone ran away, then the Beast would be all alone , he wouldn't have any human interactions with other people, he'd probably go insane from prolonged isolation ,then turn completely feral and there would really be no hope for him then.
there is no guarantee, from the enchantresses point of view, any of them would stay of their own free will.
This way, with them cursed too ,the Beast will at least have someone to talk to.
Also with their curse tied to break his. They have an incentive to help break his curse.
Also they're also needed for maintenance of the castle.if they left, the castle would fall further into ruin than it already did in the movie
Is it fair they got cursed to?
    Most certainly not.
    was it a necessity?
    maybe.
All the servants seem like good, kind and loyal people. But staying with a beast is a really tall order.
Another more messed up reason, the reason they all take the forms of inanimate objects . It is so the Beast isn't tempted to eat them. From the looks of him he doesn't look like a herbivore.
Any way those are my thoughts.

It's interesting how the as the film progresses Beast (Adam) and Gaston invert their inhumanity and humanity.
Beast in the very start, looks like primal with wide, intense eyes, walking on all fours, and looking like something out of a nightmare- with an aggressive attitude. As the film progresses with his relationship with Belle, his expressions become softer, his features become gentler, his feral voice becoming calmer, and he starts to walk on two legs/wearing clothes- being becoming truly human in appearance/attitude with a truly compassionate heart.
Gaston in contrast, starts off as a cartoonish human buffoon, but as his obsession gets more prominent, his macho face becomes more of a mask to the evil inside, his hair becomes unkempt, his macho voice giving into pompish elitish, and he walks in a primal stance- showing himself as an ungrateful, cowardly animal.
While Beast imprisoned Maurice for trespassing into his home without permission (excessive, but understandable) out of anger, Gaston in his clear mind, tried to orchestrate Maurice to be sent to be imprisoned in an asylum just to get Belle back to him- a far more monstrous act. And when that fails, he uses the town people' s fears as a means to an end to settle his petty grudge.

Raise your hand up if you think you can fathom the possibility/theory that Belle and Gaston have dated a year before the he would fight and lose (his life) to the Beast, they did briefly date just for Gaston to bang the Bimbettes when he knew he had Belle at that time, and then that’s where his villain arc (literally) grew and he became that incel who would pursue Belle for her marriage even though she no longer said yes after cheating on her with the Bimbettes.

In my opinion, Gaston, Frollo, and Mother Gothel are arguably the most terrifying villains because they are the most realistic. Men like Gaston are becoming more popular thanks to the Andrew Tate red pill community, honestly believing that women shouldn’t have rights. Along with that, there’s a rise of “Christian” nationalism that in many ways mimics Frollo, trying to use religion as an excuse for their blatant racism. Finally, Mother Gothel is the perfect representation as narcissistic mothers, who emotionally stunt their own children so that they can live out their own fantasies. Mind you, none of these three villains have any magic or tech, they’re just awful people who know how to manipulate to a T. The fact that there are people defending Gaston, Frollo, and Gothel only proves my point.

Gothel has magic. Granted, a lot of it comes from Rapunzel's hair but Gothel needed to have some power of her own to cast the spells that let her retain her youth. Nobody else in the movie automatically got younger but just touching Rapunzel's hair.

I just hope that in the movie of Shrek 5, once Disney buys DreamWorks, all The Official Disney Princes and all The Official Disney Princesses appear, especially the most important character in the movie of The Little Mermaid 2: Return to the Sea, Melody, The Daughter of Prince Eric and Princess Ariel, with her best friends Zephyr, Tip, Dash, Kiera and Catalina, and besides, they will be the new main characters of the movie of Shrek 5 so that they help Shrek, Princess Fiona, Donkey, Dragon, Puss in Boots, Kitty Softpaws, Perrito, Dulcinea, The Three Diablos, Goldilocks, The Three Bears, Prince Lancelot, Princess Tiffany, King Artie, Princess Guinevere, The Children of Shrek and Princess Fiona: Fergus, Farkle and Felicia, The Children of Donkey and Dragon: Bananas, Parfait, Peanut, Eclair, Coco and Debbie and The Others to defeat Rumpelstiltskin, Death, Drizella Tremaine, all The Official Villains of Disney and all The Official Villains of DreamWorks, as Queen Grimhilde, Lady Tremaine, Captain Hook, Hades, Maleficent, Cruella de Vil, Marina del Rey, Ursula, Gaston LeGume, Jafar, John Ratcliffe, Shan Yu, Yzma, Dr. Facilier, Zhan Tiri, Judge Claude Frollo, Mother Gothel, Tamatoa, Drago Bludvist, Grimmel The Grisly, Mor'du, King Runeard, Prince Hans, Pitch Black, Dr. Zara, Queen Nerissa, King Magnifico, Rapunzel (Shrek) and Morgana, and to prevent Rumpelstiltskin, Death, all The Official Villains of Disney and all The Official Villains of DreamWorks from ruling and destroying all The Multiverse Forever, especially The Kingdom of Far Far Away, Shrek along with his wife named Princess Fiona will need help from their new friends which are all The Official Disney Princes and all The Official Disney Princesses, as Prince Florian, Princess Snow White, Prince Charming, Princess Cinderella, The Baker, Anastasia Tremaine, Prince Philip, Princess Aurora, Prince Eric, Princess Ariel, Prince Adam, Princess Belle, Prince Aladdin, Princess Jasmine, Prince John Smith, Princess Pocahontas, Prince Li Shang, Princess Fa Mulan, Prince Naveen, Princess Tiana, Prince Flynn Rider, Princess Rapunzel, Varian, Cassandra, Maui, Queen Moana Waialiki, Hiccup Haddock, Princess Merida, Kristoff Bjorgman, Queen Anna, Jack Frost, Princess Elsa, Miguel Rivera, Princess Raya, Walter Beckett, Princess Mirabel Madrigal, Jin, Yi, Connor, Ruby Gillman, Starboy, Princess Asha, Mateo, Queen Elena, Prince Desmond, Princess Amber, Prince James, Princess Isabel, Prince Hugo, Princess Sofia, Namaari, The Futuristic Four, The Other Six Princesses of The Kingdom of Atlantica and Melody, but actually, Melody is The First and Only that she is not a True Official Disney Princess, because Melody made her debut in the movie of The Little Mermaid 2: Return to the Sea and it is also because she is The First and Only Daughter of an Official Disney Princess, but Shrek, Princess Fiona, Donkey, Dragon, Puss in Boots, Kitty Softpaws, Perrito, Dulcinea, The Three Diablos, Goldilocks, The Three Bears, Prince Lancelot, Princess Tiffany, King Artie, Princess Guinevere, The Children of Shrek and Princess Fiona: Fergus, Farkle and Felicia, The Children of Donkey and Dragon: Bananas, Parfait, Peanut, Eclair, Coco and Debbie and The Others also need Melody's help to protect and save all The Multiverse, especially Their Kingdom of Far Far Away away from Rumpelstiltskin, Death, all The Official Villains of Disney and all The Official Villains of DreamWorks, because Melody is The Daughter of Prince Eric and Princess Ariel, but also The Death of Queen Lillian, because since her husband named King Harold passed away in the movie of Shrek 3, she has felt heartbroken and that caused her own death in her Kingdom of Far Far Away, and all The Inhabitants of The Kingdom of Far Far Away are saddened by The Death of Queen Lillian, because now she is with her husband named King Harold in heaven, and now they have lost their queen, that means now The Kingdom of Far Far Away needs a new queen and King Artie said that his love interest, girlfriend, fiancée and former classmate from Worcestershire school called Princess Guinevere would be the one to be The New Queen of Far Far Away, so King Artie decided to return to his old school called Worcestershire along with Shrek, with his older cousin Princess Fiona, with Donkey, with Dragon, with Puss in Boots, with Kitty Softpaws, with Perrito, with Dulcinea, with The Three Diablos, with Goldilocks, with The Three Bears, with The Children of Shrek and Princess Fiona: Fergus, Farkle and Felicia, with The Children of Donkey and Dragon: Bananas, Parfait, Peanut, Eclair, Coco and Debbie and with the Others to meet again with their friends from their school who are actually Prince Lancelot, Princess Tiffany and his love interest, girlfriend and fiancée Princess Guinevere to take them back to his Kingdom of Far Far Away, and also The Romance of all The Official Disney Princes and all The Official Disney Princesses, especially The Romance of Maui and Queen Moana Waialiki, The Romance of Hiccup Haddock and Princess Merida, The Romance of Jack Frost and Princess Elsa, The Romance of Varian and Cassandra, The Romance of Starboy and Princess Asha, The Romance of Prince Lancelot and Princess Tiffany and The Romance of King Artie and Princess Guinevere, because I think that Maui will be Queen Moana Waialiki's love interest, boyfriend and fiancé, while Hiccup Haddock will be Princess Merida's love interest and boyfriend, Princess Tiffany will be Prince Lancelot's love interest, girlfriend and fiancée and Princess Guinevere will be King Artie's love interest, girlfriend and fiancée, because Queen Moana Waialiki is going to fall in love with Maui, Princess Merida is going to fall in love Hiccup Haddock, Princess Tiffany is going to fall in love with Prince Lancelot and Princess Guinevere is going to fall in love with King Artie, but they don't know how to tell them their feelings towards them and neither how to win their hearts, because every time Queen Moana Waialiki gets too close to Maui when it comes to true love, she gets very nervous with him, while which in the case of Princess Merida is also the same, because whenever Princess Merida gets too close to Hiccup Haddock when it comes to true love, she also gets very nervous with him, in the case of Princess Tiffany it is also the same, because whenever Princess Tiffany gets too close to Prince Lancelot when it comes to true love, she also gets very nervous around him, and in the case of Princess Guinevere too, because every time Princess Guinevere gets too close to King Artie when it comes to true love, she also gets very nervous around him, but luckily for them, Princess Fiona will help Queen Moana Waialiki to win The Heart of Maui, also Princess Merida to win The Heart of Hiccup Haddock, also Princess Tiffany to win The Heart of Prince Lancelot and also Princess Guinevere to win The Heart of King Artie, and I also want that Jack Frost will be Princess Elsa's love interest and boyfriend and Varian will be Cassandra's love interest and boyfriend, because Jack Frost leaves fall in love with Princess Elsa, but he doesn't know how to tell her his feelings and how to win her heart, because every time Jack Frost gets too close to Princess Elsa when it comes to true love, he gets very nervous with her, because Varian leaves fall in love with Cassandra, but he doesn't know how to tell her his feelings and how to win her heart, because every time Varian gets too close to Cassandra when it comes to true love, he gets very nervous with her, but fortunately for they, Shrek will help Jack Frost to win The Heart of Princess Elsa and also Varian to win The Heart of Cassandra, except Melody, The Daughter of Prince Eric and Princess Ariel, because she doesn't need a love interest, but also The Rivalry of King Artie and Queen Anna because they both want to compete in a challenge to see who is The Best Ruler of a Kingdom, because both want to do what is best for Their Own Kingdom, because King Artie wants to do the best for his Kingdom of Far Far Away because now he is The New King of Far Far Away and Queen Anna wants to do the best for her Kingdom of Arendelle because now she is The New Queen of Arendelle, but at the end, King Artie and Queen Anna become best friends in the world, because at the end, they both learned from their mistakes that they have made since their challenge to compete to see who is the best ruler of a Kingdom, and that at the end, King Artie and Princess Guinevere see their first true love kiss and that they become a romantic couple, just like Prince Lancelot and Princess Tiffany, and also that at the end of the movie of Shrek 5, Shrek becomes The New Leader of The Official Disney Princes and Maui, Hiccup Haddock, Kristoff Bjorgman, Jack Frost, Varian, Jin, Connor, The Baker, Starboy, Mateo, Prince Desmond, Prince James, Prince Hugo, Prince Lancelot and King Artie become The New Official Members of The Official Disney Princes, while Princess Fiona becomes The New Leader of The Official Disney Princesses and Queen Anna, Princess Elsa, Cassandra, Yi, Ruby Gillman, Anastasia Tremaine, Princess Asha, Queen Elena, Princess Amber, Princess Isabel, Princess Sofia, Goldilocks, Namaari, The Other Six Princesses of The Kingdom of Atlantica, Princess Tiffany and Princess Guinevere become The New Official Members of The Official Disney Princesses and that one day, Princess Tiffany will be The Wife of Prince Lancelot and that they have a family in the future, and that also Princess Guinevere is The Wife of King Artie, that they also have a family and that she becomes The New Queen of Far Far Away in The Future.

I've always felt the best Disney villains were the ones that were grounded in reality, and I think Gaston might be one of the most realistic of them all. He's a toxic misogynist who won't take no for an answer, but instead of being feared or hated like Frollo, the townsfolk actually _condone_ Gaston's actions solely because he's handsome and charismatic. He's not discreet about the things he plans to do and even admits it out loud, but the other villagers clearly see what he does as charming and cute instead of predatory red flags, and they even aid him with no hesitation.
It just shows how easily people with good looks, money or other benefits can use them to get and do whatever they want, and their nasty, bullying behaviour will be excused and supported by the people around them because of this. You probably won't ever meet someone like Jafar or Maleficent in real life, but we've *all* met or will meet a Gaston at some point.

Clopin: “Who is the monster and who is the man?” It’s also implied he would be a abusive parent especially if he has a daughter and how he treats Lefou shows how abusive he might be. But he’s not a villain, but definitely a antagonist. I’m half convinced he wanted to kill the Beast because he saw it as a threat to society since Maurice told them he locked Belle in the dungeon and he was confirmed to not be insane. Maybe he thought Belle was crazy for falling in love with someone who put her in the dungeon. He was justified in believing Maurice was insane because there not aware the beast exist and the live action remake has it that there memories of him as human were erased. How would you react if someone came in claiming someone is locked in a dungeon by a beast, would you think the person is crazy. We the audience know the beast exists and Maurice is not insane, but Gaston and the others don’t. But yes Gaston is still exactly what you said about him.

Now that I think about it, beauty and the beast goes against the common stereotype perpetrated by many older disney movies, that the ugly, scary looking characters are the evil ones and the cuter, more atrractive characters are the good guys who get victimized. The hunchback of notre dame, like this movie, also puts emphasis on character, but claude frollo and his guards did not have cute or attractive appearances by any means. Anyways i think we all can agree that this fits: "what makes a monster and what makes a man?"
Edit: So this movie also does the same thing that the well known disney movies did a little given that we have Bell, but you get the idea

What I love so much about Gaston as a villain is that he’s a perfect representation of certain men who aren’t very respectful towards certain women’s boundaries and wanted to do everything it takes make certain women “theirs” for his own selfish desires, and that’s by taking advantage of the people they love, which we see with Gaston plotting to capture Belle’s father by falsely accusing him of being a crazy old guy.
We’ve seen most of Gaston’s screen time obsessively stalking Belle just to win her affection in a very unhealthy manner, and Belle clearly wanted nothing to do with him.
Indeed Belle was captured by the beast who had anger issues, but unlike Gaston who’s a monster from inside and out, the Beast who does look like a “monster” still has a pure heart inside him since not only did Belle help him change his attitude and the way he behaved towards his clients, but also found love and happiness within
    himself.
Gaston only cared for his own selfish needs to making Belle “his”, and wanted to kill the beast out of pure evil, which his pathetic heart and lust led to Gaston’s own satisfying gruesome downfall.

He was. In the mobile game Union X/Unchained X, the player character visits Beast's Castle during the events of the movie. In typical KH fashion, he turns into a Heartless that you have to defeat. I still wish we got to kick his ass in KH2 tho.

Nah i dont think gaston is
    Sexist, hes just a superficial
    Narcissist who was treated
as a hero who can do no wrong
    this attitude made him treat
    Everyone badly not just women
& he was obsessed with belle
    Because she didnt have the
    Same attitude everybody had
and it drove him mad, honestly
this is what happens when people
Treat people like a god it makes
Them think they truly are, I think
    He's like homelander who's obsessed
With personal image a man who's
So in love with himself that he
    Views people as less then.

Gaston's obsession with Belle was cringe and gay. She was obviously a terrible feminist with daddy issues. If he would've settled down with one of the better women who wasn't quite as pretty on the outside, he would've retained his position as leader of the boys.

I liked that one of the earliest Disney musical depiction where they didn't have a high enough platform for Gaston to fall from so they quickly solved it by just making Belle a total badass beating the shit out of Gaston to death from pure rage for stabbing the beast! THAT should be a part of the freaking live action version because that would make a better excuse for making Belle an empowering girl boss since it's based on that one particular musical!

Tbf. From what he knows the girl he likes was captured by a monster. No one knows hell become a human. I feel like anyone would do something like he did in trying to kill the beast.

@@a.jthomas6132 Andrew Tate is a disgusting misogynist who made a name for himself online from his rants and how he shit talks about woman and the traditional boomer misogyny you’d find, he’s allegedly been accused fir trafficking (though idk if it’s confirmed) and he’s just a massive twat who hides himself beside a cowardly facade of “masculinity”
