This is an amazing video. On our homestead our well water has high iron as well. My son got a 15'x4' pool for his birthday, and after shocking it the first time it went from normal rusty to reddish brown overnight. I came to UA-cam and found your video first. It made sense so went out and picked up the couple of pieces I didn't already have. Threw it together in less than a half hour, and had it connected and running at 4pm last night. 4500 gallons of water went from so dark couldn't see 4 inches down, to seriously crystal clear in about 16 hours. Took the bucket off and connected the hose back up to the jet, and removed the polyfil from the bucket. Like you it wasn't near as bad as I'd of imagined but it certainly made my hands orange after pulling it all out. Cleanup was surprisingly simple as well. Your video saved my family over $100 in products that wouldn't have really worked anyways, and from being exposed to the harshness of all those chemicals as well. Thank you so much!! We will be following your page and sharing with everyone we know!
oh fantastic! Great to hear!
Watched the video and built one myself. Recycled old pool parts and cut up a pillow so it did not cost me a thing! Worked great and highly recommend! 24 hours huge change. Should take 3-4 days for my 5,000 gal pool
I watched this and built one for my pool. It worked. I let it run for two days, crystal clear.
So glad I found this! I cannot thank you enough. Was at my wits end with my new pool, sides were starting to stain, water samples taken to pool stores were fine. Then I found this. 12 hours and you can actually see the bottom. You are a life saver!! Just amazing how well it works, who would think simple poly fill pulls out iron deposits. Happy swimming 🐳🦭🐬
IT REALLY WORKS!!!! had to do it for 4 days, replaced the polyfill 3 times in the bucket, but with time, it works!!! and best of all-on a budget!!
irony water
Wanted thank you for posting this. I had the same problem and your video saved me a lot of headaches. Built it and used it to clean my 18 foot pool and it's now crystal clear. Once again thank you so much for posting this.
Did this a few years ago after watching. Used old pillow polyfil, replace when it flows slow. This is good stuff 👍 TY
The poly fil and bucket method works very good but I discovered last year another way to get the brown water clear. The pumps that come with these pools are kind of underpowered. I just upgraded to a bigger pump(1500 gph). I've been using mr clean magic erasers over both suction lines. This doesn't really restrict the pump too much either because water is still flowing freely on the sides of the suction ports. I just ring them out twice a day they get really nasty dark brown but within 2-3 days my water is Crystal clear.
We watched your video and tried it, and man, within 24 hours what a difference!! Thanks!
We used a large sock filled with poly-fil. We had a clamp so it only cost a little over $4 for the poly-fil from Wal-Mart. It took 1 1/2 days and our pool is clear this morning. We also used the same contraption on the end of our hose when filling the pool after that.
Recently moved into a house with a well, this video was extra helpful with the kids pool. I’m gunna hit like and subscribed. Thanks buddy!
Pretty cool fix for that problem im on well water also and we have an iron issue but not quiet that bad. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks, ALthough I was very sceptic, it really worked. IT took a few days to get our big kayak pool clean, but it did the job. After the job was done, we decided to also add fiber fill to the filter and this summer our pool has never been cleaner. Saves us a lot on electricity as we don't run the pump as long. Together with the shark vacuum this did the trick after filling up our big pool after we got the new liner..
Fantastic, we have since upgraded pools. The same filter system, just a little longer waiting time now. Great to hear!

Thank you. Worked great. We used our sum pump on it and it took about 12 hrs on our 10,000 litre pool. We even left the filter unit submerged in the pool during because we were worried of it falling out of the pool. I tried everything on this pool (on a budget) and was ready to give up. we have rusty water to begin with. I'm so happy we tried this
thank u so much! we just moved to a new place with well water and we filled an intex 18'*4' pool and shocked it... naturally we were horrified the next morning when our pool was a deep brown/burgandy and completely un-see through through mess. came across this video and tried it...today is day 3 and our water is completely clear...it's truely amazing thanks again.
It really does work. It seems the poly fill is not as tight a filter as the pool filter so I don't think the poly fill is as much catching the iron particles as it is creating stagnant water for the iron to settle out. I arranged my bucket so the pump water enters at the bottom and the filtered water comes out the top. Thanks Farmland for a great idea.
Thank u for making this video it worked just as u said it would. We were so frustrated that the water was brown and didn't know what to do. U made are summer! Thanks again!
This totally worked! 5 days and a couple vacuuming and our big pool was clear. Thank you for sharing!
I filled my pool with well water and i found that there was a lot of iron in my pool. I went to the pool store and they really didn't have a solution to my iron problem. I ran across this video so i thought well i have nothing to lose. I built the filtration system. After three days of uaing this system my pool is getting clear. This bucket idea works well. Thanks for the tip.
Hey guys, I have used everything. An old pro educated me on iron removal from pools. Very simple, change filter media to zeolite media widely available. Shock it with chlorine turn it brown, let filter run will take it out in a day permanently and keep it out. Very easy. I have done it for years.......
Thanks for the information. We gave up our pool dreams for the summer because of the well water. After your video I'm ready to head to the store for a pool and have some summer fun! 😀
Hello, Great video. How is it when you water your garden? Do you use drip tape or sprinkler method..Thanks
Currently we use a sprinkler. When we get the back to eden method more in place we plan to move towards soaked hose. We have that type of setup n my wife's flower gardens in the front yard. It has been working really well for use.
Not that it is bad for the iron in the water, but you see an orange tint to your veg plants?
I am draining my pool right now. We have this issue. Nap. Then back to work. Thank you for the info.
Thanks for the tip. We plan to use rain water catchment on our new home, but will occasionally be supplementing with well water. thank you for posting Eric
What size hole do you drill for the rubber/plastic piece?
What did you use to drill a hole through the bucket?
Definitely worked. Have a 12×20 and 3 days later it's clear and ready to swim!
I have an inground pool and simply put old tshirts in the skimmer baskets. It worked like magic! I may try the stuffings from some old pillows in the skimmer basket next time. I only see the brown water when I introduce new well water to my pool. But now I know what to do for it!
I'm glad you mentioned this, Dannielle!!! Same problem, in-ground/well water. Figured I would have to replumb the pump system for this. I bought filter socks and am going to stuff the baskets with poly!!!. Win-win!!!!!
@@corvetteshorts4670 Great! It is still working like a charm! Everytime I add well water it turns slightly brown but I put the same tshirt in the skimmer basket and it clears up within 24 hours. Only thing I do differently now is put a heavy rock on top of the tshirt so it doesn't float around in the skimmer basket. So you may need to put something in it to give it weight.
We have this exact pool, I made this out of old parts I had laying around and an empty kitty litter pail (and this video helped a bit). it's working like a charm. Very happy with results after the work involved but it saved a ton of money so I'd do it all over again (with a bit of hindsight this time :)
Just wanted to say thanks for the video, I watched it and re created your filter and it worked amazing.
THANK YOU!!!! We filled our 10'x30" Intex pool and by the afternoon it was greenish brown. The shock treatment made it look muddy. My husband saw your video and set up our filter. 48 hours later our pool is clear and ready to swim in in!!
This 100% works. $30 fix with almost zero chemicals
I did the same but my stores did not have polyfill. I got a 2 pack of cheap polyester stuffed pillows for $10. I cut them open and used the filling, so I had two filters worth that I could run and clean/exchange out. After my water was clear I shocked it and it immediately turned brown again. Be prepared for the last cleaning after the shock. My water is heavy iron, looked like chocolate milk.
This is awesome! We went out this morning and got the stuff to make this. It's currently running. Im excited to see what it looks like in the morning.
Excellent! You will have to let me know how it turns out. We just connected ours back up again because we need to add some more water. The rain was not keeping up. The water has been crystal clear up until the hose was pulled out again.
+Life in Farmland it's so crazy how well this has worked! Our pool is basically clear! We are gonna run it for a little while longer, can't wait to get itl
That was supposed to say I can't wait to get in it. Lol
Thanks! I have a larger 6000 gallon Bestway pool I filled with water from a spring across the street. HAVE THE SAME ISSUE. It seems like no matter how much chlorine i put in, I cant get the water to clear up, if anything it looks cloudier. I keep cleaning out a redish slimy substance from the bottom and in the filter constantly. Im thinking it is IRON. I'm going to try this method. Thanks again!
If you get a cartridge filter system this will filter out the Rust/Iron. The small little things filter systems these pools come with aren't designed for iron/rust removal. Great idea.
Why is mine not working 😭😭😭...i have a 5 gallon bucket filled with the batting and i even put iron out in it and its still not working.. Its been 3 days running non stop and still nothing.. The water is working fine through the filter.. The pressure is fine.. Idk what i could possibly be doing wrong..
I used 4 bags of filler and once I shocked it it went back to brown from the oxidization. I then used a product called Metal Free and haven’t had an issue since.
Do you shock the pool without checking CYA level first?....I have no CYA in my well water, debating if i should add that before shocking. My Leslie's pool water evaluation only showed 0.1 iron, but it is yellow brown, and that is after using a Hayward Bobby to fill it. The Bobby is indeed dark rusty brown
Would this work with a smaller kiddie pool? My pool doesn't have a filter.
I found a way to clean your brown water I filled pool with well water after two in a half weeks of shocking and putting chemicals I detach my filter for my pool added a longer hose from filter and end of the hose I made a homemade filter get a gallon of water empty drill holes like an inch apart around the bottom of the jug get a clamp to attach the jug to the hose that's connected to the hose but before that step fill the jug with stuffing like cotton like an old pillow or something stuff as much as you can then clamp the jug on the hose put in pool then turn pump on. Everyday change the the filter on pool with new one or clean and take jug off and remove cotton and put new cotton u can use filter clean its five bucks put in filter and valcum brown stuff from the bottom trust me it will work its going through two filters repeat u will see change in a day or two
Should I do a chemical treatment before I filter the well water or after I filter it? Great results for you though! Hoping ours looks that good.
Instead of 1 big hole at the bottom and all the small ones on the lid to one side, i just made holes throughout the entire lid with one bigger one in the middle for the hoes and just ran the house though the hole down to the bottom of the bucket. Put a few rocks at the bottom and stand the bucket upright in the pool and let it run. No fittings needed and no holes in the bucket. In 8 hours my 18ft x 48inch pool was nearly clean and i had about a gallon of orange rust mud.
Thank you so much for the info! We built one and used it, crystal clear water!
How often do you have to replace the polyfill?
I’d like to know this too lol did you ever find out?
awesome filter. amazing results within 24 hours!
So...Do you shock the water then filter it with your bucket? If that's it, I go back to my regular way & let the shock settle, get my goggles & snorkel & wet vac the stuff off the bottom of the pool. (I have alot of fun doing it. )
I found the best thing at the hardware was the irrigation fittings haha they have a 1 1/4 barb 👍
My pool is in the same situation as yours.
I want to fix this problem before I remove my pool.
How do I get rid of brown stains in and on the walls on a gunite in ground pool
alkaline powder from pool shop
Also the time it requires will depend on how many gallons per hour your filter is pushing threw it
How long will it take for about 2200 gallons? Water is pretty Brown.
I've seen a lot of videos on this and they all seem to be above ground pools. I have an in ground pool with a minor iron problem that continues to stain my pool liner. I'm tired of using chemicals, etc that is only a temporary fix. If I can get the iron in suspension and off the liner, which I know how to do, will this set up work on an inground pool system? Thanks!
Good video. Thanks for sharing
What chemicals are you using?
Name of the plastic fitting?
This is not working for us. I'm not sure if it's because we set a larger, sand filter to our 24ft Intex pool, but it's been running for 24 hours and there is no change to the water.
What a great idea. Thanks for sharing.
Do you pack down the polyfill until it's super dense? I have watched some videos where they pack the polyfill to the point where it's almost rock solid.
mkappel05 not to crazy. this year we got a pillow from the dollar store cut it open and took the poly filling to fill the 5 gallon bucket
Life in Farmland thank you! We have the exact same pool, but instead of using our well water, we filled our pool with water we pumped from our pond pump house. We cleaned and sanitized with shock and chlorine, and tried flocculant, but it is still brown, so I'm hoping this will work!
My pool is twice as big, still running the poly with the bucket. After four days water is still brown and water is slowly running out of pail. I think the poly is dirty and will need to change it with new one. Thanks for video.
Sorry just saw your comment. Check the pool filter. We had to pull ours our several times and spray it off with the hose since the iron would clog it up. Our poly fill was pretty gross when done. Might want to check it, Might want to put a bucket under it when you move it so nothing poors back in.
Just put a new bucket with new poly in it. The water was brown but now its green. Can't see the bottom of the pool yet. Checked the poly on first bucket, super dirty or black or whatever it is. Hopefully this one will work. Thanks for the video.
Wow that really cleared it up real good Great tip
Does fibers from the polyfil get in the water or the pump?
We have noticed any in the time we have been using this method. Hope that helps.
Can't wait to try this!! So, after you run the filter and the pool is clear, do you just add chlorine/ shock like normal? Does it stay clear after its added?
Christina Berens we add it before. When it is added before being filtered it will look its worse. Little filter time and will clear up. Adding after won't effect it any more clearitywise
WOW Eric that was pretty cool, great tip...I hope Gracie has lot's of fun in her new pool, lot's of hot days to cool off from... great job!
I use the inside of my old pillows and buy my family all new pillows once a year and use this idea for our pool.
Cool! I have uber-rusty well water. Will have to give this a try.
Nice filter, I used to work at a pool company and that is a work of art.
That's how I did mine works great!
Great video, THANK YOU!!!! Can't wait to try this.
Runnings had everything you need. No messing around
Man that's cool glad it worked God bless buddy
It works awesome...ty so much
Instead of 1 big hose at the bottom and all the small ones on the lid to one side, i just made holes throughout the entire lid with one bigger one in the middle for the hoes and just ran the hose though the hole down to the bottom of the bucket. Put a few rocks at the bottom and stand the bucket upright in the pool and let it run. No fittings needed and no holes in the bucket. In 8 hours my 18ft x 48inch pool was nearly clean and i had about a gallon of orange rust mud.
What did you use to drill the big hole in the bucket for the hose?
@@gracemaglaris1547 i used a 1/4 inch standard bit. I made about 40 holes around the outside. For the center i used a utility knife to cut an oval shape hole that was a little more than 1.25 inch by a lottle less than 1.75 inch for my 1.5 inch hose. By being oval it was able to flex some to have a little tension on the house so it would not slip back out on it's own.
Josh Nelson thank you!
@@gracemaglaris1547 other fun fact. By putting all the holes in the lid, If your ph is high and alkalinity low you can submerge the bucket standing up and not raise you ph any more. If it's the other way and your ph is low and alkalinity high, raise the bucket above the water line some to help raise ph so you can lower it while you decrease the alkalinity.
Josh Nelson wow thank you so much for your advice and help!
That's a very cool idea
cool filter what abt the smell
Works amazing thanks so much!!
so i did it today and didnt saw no change at all in 4 hours then the pump turned off (the pool is new) as so is the filter its the first pool i ever own in my life is the filter supposed to be running all the time cuz i saw you run it for alot of hours or did you turn it on and off?? or does it turn on and off by itself hope u answer
When we do the homemade filter we just leave it on non stop for a day or two. I believe they recommend running it 8 hours a day. To be safe you could do that but we just let ours run while getting the iron out.
ok thanks i will def try it hope it works thanks for answering!!
Great idea, thanks for sharing.
nice tip, nice video, thumbs up
PS: It must be a sand filter, and zeosand or zeolite media only need less than half of qunatity of sand
thanks for posting.
I tried your solution and it so worked. We had crystal clear water.
we have a 18' pool. we are trying it now
So, basically, had you run the water through that filter to begin with there would have never been any iron in the pool?
Need to shock the pool to get the iron separate
Looked like it did the trick for you folks which is awesome.
nice idea
Is anyone concerned about the chemicals from the polyfil going into the water?
Wish you'd shown us the condition of the polyfill after use.
Not only rust, It also filter algae
Saving money. I believe you said the polyfill cost 8 dollars for that bag? Did you notice the bag is about the same size as a pillow you can buy at walmart for 4 dollars? And the pillow is filled with..... =0) And now you even have a piece of cloth you can add as a cover over your bucket lid, for just a little more filtering.
Hey I saw you posted this recently. I was wondering what did you use to drill the hole in the bucket?
Looks like he used a regular drill bit to make the series of small holes. And a hole saw, to make the big hole.
Awesome!!!!!!
Same thing, thanks for save us some time)
Good share! BTW will Send pics of my giant pumpkin plants soon. Up to my armpits in chores. 🌞 But who isn't. :)
Awesome! I am excited to see how it is going. Our plant has just been sitting still. Not much growth. I would be surprised if we came any what close to the winner.
The fittings you used are for electrical not plumbing, that's why you see corrosion on them
Thats the iron, You should of seen how much was in the bucket. We got the fittings out of the plumbing dept.
I just added vitamin C to my brown well water in my pool and next day water was back to clear blue again.
Marcel Max can you do a video please?
I've been using vitamin C powder for years after topping off my inground pool with well water. But the problem is that the vitamin c depletes your chlorine levels and as soon as you bring your chlorine levels back up, the brown water comes back. After watching videos like this, I tried simply putting old tshirts in the skimmer baskets to filter out the iron before going to the pool filtration system and it is a much cheaper option than the vitamin c. However, the vitamin c is great for old stains...it makes everything nice and bright again.
@@DannielleElliott thank you for the knowledge God bless 🙂
can this convert hard water into soft water??
yea, but you need around 2000 pounds of the poly-fill
ha ha ha ha ... you guys like a driving from ny to fl going thru ca... damaging buckets.. wasting time... put the pipe straight to the bottom of the bucket. fill-up with the same material (you even can experiment with different types of media) and cover the bucket with the potato bag or some other net material, letting the pipe go out of the bucket. sank the bucket to the bottom of the pool.. that's all! the best of all - to buy boat bilge pump and connect to the bottom of the pipe at the bucket - don't need to use and overload (or even burn) your original pool pump. and also - if needed - buy more pumps and make more filters to do the job in hours. i cleaned 7000 gal pool in 3 hours with 4 bilge pumps (780gph). also don't rise ph before cleaning calcium/rust - even lower ph with muratic acid if needed. add bleach shock later when you will be done with calcium/rust
good, but be aware of the carbon fibers that you introduce to your pool
Is that lipstick on his mouth
Oshane Reid lol, strawberry popcicle. J/k no idea why
