Tried fire for the first time last night after watching this guide and it was super helpful. I always struggled with the spec in 25 man ICC and the other mages were never of much help like they didn't want to share their secrets with me. Assholes. But last night, I was on fire. lmao. for the ST opener would you not cast scorch first to get critical mass then living bomb since it increases living bomb dmg?

Good question. Once all three of your dots are up and critical mass is on the target, the combustion icon will glow.

in AOE, do you need to keep the critical mass buff on 1 target, 3 targets with living bomb, or all targets?
That's very min-maxy but I would just worry about the 1 priority target for Crit Mass
When do you work in Mirror Image in relation to combustion? Will MI boost dots already applied meaning you can MI AFTER combustion or do it before you lay dots?

Does the dots remaining duration have any effect on combustion damage? Or does it calculate the dots TOTAL damage rather than remaining duration?
I'm not 100% on this but I think Living Bomb is the only dot that needs to be reapplied before combustion.
It calcs the dots their damage per tick and adds that into the new dot, you do not reapply any dots especially not living bomb, all you have to do is make sure the 3 dots are present before you press combust and make sure you have high ignite ticks
Does flamestrike (DOT) as it's called in details meter count as an actual dot that can couple with combustion?

@@rcpclassic Dang, but appreciate the guide! My DPS has been insane since understanding the proper rotation. Before seeing your vid I would still usually top the charts in dungeons cause fire mage is stupid strong but now its just untouchable with the right rotation.
Can't you use fireblast proc to spread living bomb and save yourself like 4k mana casting 2 more times?
I do it all the time. I just have one beefy boi that I put everything on, then blast him to spread it to everyone else.
I got a question, if your dots are super big BUT are about to run off should i still use combustion or does the duration of the dots affect the combustions dmg?
I don't know 100% but I think the only dot duration that matters and needs to be reapplied is Living Bomb.
It takes the total remaining damage of your combined dots and adds it into fireblast. So the ideal scenario is a huge damage # ignite that has JUST refreshed + other dots > combust. There are weakauras and tools that track your biggest ignites and will write them in the chat for you after fights. If you pay attention to those you'll start to get a feeling for what your ignite damage range is, which will help you when making the decision about when to combust. Obviously the best scenario is giga huge ignite that just refreshed (this is usually off of a fireball or a pyroblast, since the damage of your last crit is what determines the damage of your ignite) but this isn't always realistic and often times it's better to just send it because holding it for too long will mean you'd lose a cast over the course of a fight.
This is a big part of the reason that fire mage gets better as expac goes on: more stats on gear, more crit chance (which gives more crits so more chances for a big crit) and more haste (which at certain breakpoints adds extra ticks to all of your dots, thus increasing their total damage), which means a much more consistent playstyle. It can feel rough early on as fire because your crit chance isn't as high and so it's easy to feel like you're getting fucked by bad RNG since you're kind of at its mercy
Specifically for combustion damage + duration. It is only effected by what your current dots + how many of them you have will make combustion stronger, for example:
You always want living bomb and pyro on, what can make a really good combustion is tracking if your ignite is doing 5k per tick or 25k, if you also have any cleave, it will take all the dots (Like ones you've spread with fire blast) so if 5 targets have 10k ignite + 5 pyros, and the 3 living bombs, then that combustion will suck them all up into a super dot, then you can spreading them again with another fireblast (impact proc) spreading combustion for juicy 800k aoe dmg in dots! On trash, I'm doing 1.4 mill in just combustion alone, I have a foji tracker for it.
Tl:Dr make sure living bomb, pyro and high ignite is ticking before combustion

Which stats are we going as a fire mage?
Int > Hit cap (17%), Haste cap (12.5%) Crit, then Mastery.
Reforge all Mastery into Crit if you're hit capped, otherwise put into hit till you're capped.
We have several haste caps, remember to take raid buffs into account when going for them
Why not use scorch for fishing for crits?
It's close but Fireball does a bit more damage. If you really need to jump into Combust like on pull and you couldn't pre-pyro, you will use Scorch over Fireball just to try and crit as fast as possible.

One thing I would change about this, I would recommend on AOE pulls not using 3 GCDs to individually cast Living Bomb. That's a lot of time just setting up. Instead use Living Bomb on your primary target, go into your AOE rotation and as soon as your AOE rotation procs Impact, use Impact on your primary target to spread Living Bomb and all other DoTs to nearby mobs.
Staggering actually isn't a bad idea if the size of the pull is right. Here's why: staggered living bombs have separate timers (obviously) so when the first living bomb goes off you can impact spread one of the other living bombs onto the first time which will then cause 2 explosions. If you do that right then you get 1 living bomb explosion, then 2 explosions, then 3 explosions for a total of 6 explosions (each of which can crit and ignite) as opposed to just 3. Obviously if the pull isn't going live long enough for the explosions to hit everyone they need to then you wouldn't do this, but in that case you wouldn't want to spread living bomb anyways besides incidentally
I have duel frost and fire bit only use fire because she is a FIRE Queen 3-5 mill in damage every time way more than frost my question is how are fire mages for raiding
It's impossible to really know but when i was looking at raid testing and different damage logs, it looks like Fire is going to be doing pretty good in the first phase. Probably somewhere in the A-Tier.

I've played for a few hours in pre-patch and can tell that your guide is wrong..
1. You almost never use combustion just because you have all 3 dots up, you need to have a few big criticals in a row from pyro or fireball to have a huge ignite tick + other 2 dots (which the weak aura shows) only then u can use combustion. If we use it like you said in the guide, combustion will deal only a small % of dps due to low ignite ticks.
2. In my opinion, for AoE when you are about to face a lot of mobs, you focus on the highest HP mob that is in the middle of the pack because the "Impact" spread is only 12 yards from your target, Ideally Pre-cast Pyro on it (for the Pyro dot) > Fireball while Pyro is mid-air > Only 1x Living Bomb > If all dots are up and mobs wont live long use combust as 4th button > Flamestrike > Blast Wave > Dragon's Breath is the priority order > the moment you get impact proc, you use Fire Blast to spread to all targets in 12 yards (your pyro dot lasts 8 seconds, if you are fast enough 8 seconds is more than enough to spread all 3 dots) > After than you just spam Flamestrike > Blast Wave > Dragon's Breath.
P.S. At 81 we get Fire Orb, I don't know how much dps it will do, so that will depend if we use it early or later after spread.
This sounds good until you get ZERO big crits and never use Combust because you wanted to wait until the absolute perfect moment when all the stars align.

Jimfro in aoe you are fishing for impact procs with blastwave/dragonsbreath/flamestrike, its practically impossible not to have an impact proc on 5+ targets or more unless the stars aligned to give you the biggest misfortune in the world

Theser are very specific scripts that you need to execute, like a computer. There's no place for interpretation or do anything differently, it's executing the script mechanically and then you're golden. Boss encounters also went into this direction, instead of being mindful of some abilities, it's executing tasks precisely, like a computer. It requires the intelligence and creativity of a factory conveyor belt worker. :(
Idk what you're talking about...in vanilla and tbc all mages did was spam 1 button...this is the slow curve that leads to retail where the rotation is much more complicated

This guide is pretty useless without the most important factor mentioned. Macros. If you followed this guide and are still last in DPS, it's because of Macros.

In aoe you WILL have a proc because your blast wave/flamestrike practically make it extremely easy to get an impact proc, never spend 3 globals placing living bombs unless all 3 targets are spread away fro. Eachother
yes very true i just precast pyro > living bomb > blast wave (usually have an impact proc by now) then fire blast to spread dots. Then you can db/flamestrike if mobs are close to dying or you can scorch and fish for some more pyros/ignites to spread to the rest of the pack.
I do this as well…the fireblast proc will also spread the living bomb but only the duration of time that is left on the original bomb target…basically gives you all that time for living bomb to explode to allow you to get the fireblast proc
