I feel like Paul while he never showed it always had a respect for ash. He learned from him and taught him something almost every time they met. Sure he proply thinks ash is childish but at the end if the day he still beats gym leaders and champions and Paul admires ash it his own way. Best rival in the anime and honestly I hoped that the gane platinum used Paul instead of Barry as the rival for a more serious rival but whatever
Paul didn't have respect for Ash until the end. The closest things to the game with Paul personality would be Silver, but it wouldn't make sense since in the game, you have to defeat your rival everytime while in the anime, Ash consistently lost to Paul before the SInnoh League

@Funtime_x Actually in Heartgold/ Soul Silver you have to beat Silver every time. The only time you can lose and keep progressing is the first battle. Every other time you have to beat him to progess the story. I remember not being able to go to Ilex forest for a min because you have to battle him directly after beating the bug gym leader when you try to leave town. It's a scripted event.

When Paul didnt know Ash was a seasoned trainer he was harsher against him. Ash was using his Sinnoh team all the time. Paul was switching between his Johto and Sinnoh. Thats how he was so fast at train and evolve his pokemons. His final team was a mixup with his old pokemons. Thats why he wanted to know which pokemons Ashs going to use in their battle. By the time Ash was in Sinnoh he already been in Kanto Johto and Hoenn. Mixup of that team could easily beat Paul already. But hes proven his strenght by beating Paul with the team hes gathered in Sinnoh only. That made Paul respecr him even more after losing to Ash.
Ash basically said he didn't take paul seriously because he held back his best and strongest mons with the newest and freshest team he got
i personally think he would of lost even with his old Pokémon. it was stated that they both pushed each others growth as a trainer and both grew way stronger by the end of dp. it took ash all of his dp experience to beat paul.

After rewatching dp, i realised Paul had respect for Ash ever since he got to know Pikachu knew volt tackle. He didn't admire Ash's style and called him pathetic. In almost all their encounters, you see Paul emotionally challenging Ash, this could be way to see how many of Ash's decisions in a battle are based on emotions, which he later on used against Ash in the battle of Lake Aquity where he destroyed Ash. After seeing Reggie lose the Brandon, he always felt that raising pokemon strictly would be the only way to make a team Strong, thats why he always called Ash pathetic, cuz he was supportive towards his pokemon.

I have always felt like the anime with Ash came in two separate parts even though they never really said so. There’s Kanto through Sinnoh being just one Story start to finish, with all stories coming to a respectable close. And the rest are just entirely separate entities from that or each other. And the fact of how much Sinnoh connection was in the last Journeys seasons, I believe that was a callback to it.
In Kanto Ash learned how to treat Pokémon in a way no one else could. In Johto he learned to battle and to beat his childhood rival. In Advanced I think he learnt the most in the Battle Frontier Saga again about battle philosophy. In Sinnoh he learned so many I cannot even name them, but also gained the respect of the world and Paul, and Brock too had a major full rounded end to his Story.

Ironically,this video shows a lot of Paul's development towards the series. When he meets Ash,he thinks of him(Ash) as nothing more than a mediocre trainer with a naive mentality about training pokemon. When Paul realizes Ash has defeated the Battle Frontier,he starts to treat him as an actual rival,to the point where he even helps him save his pokémon from Team Rocket.
