  • Took the family to Western Maryland Scenic to ride but we never did
get on board. But it was still a good day with some quality family time
together. Couple of coach cars separated from the main train on their
way to the depot. They told me there was a car problem so that is all
    I know.

When you get back to work, you need to tell the bosses that your railroad needs a steam locomotive about the same size as 1309😊😊

I wanted a steam loco at work since 1977 when we started Chan.
Free fuel, but tons of maintenance and now with the EPA they
probably wouldn't allow it unless it was only used for excursions
which we don't have. Thank you for taking the time to check out the video and may you have a very good day my friend.

Oh well, things happen specially with old equipment and yes they
reimbursed us. We will go back and ride later in the fall when
the leaves are turning. That day was rainy and foggy and the
views wouldn't have been very good anyway. Aiden was disappointed but they got him a funnel to play with at the store

We appreciate the try, Thanks. For a real thrill when it's running at speed, take a walk to the next car, that between car action & noise & smell has stuck with me for almost 70 years. Then again, the newer passenger stuff is probably somewhat better at not scaring little kids!

Amtrak having problems is an understatement 🤣 i used to take the southwest chief weekly, rode so often i knew the crews on first name basis. Even got to take the controlls of the 42s when they first got them (they got in a bit of trouble for that one but thankfully only a verbal). The saying was (and still is i think) "If you arrive or depart on the same calender day as youre supposed to, we are on time". 72 hour delay was the record when i was on board due to a power unit derailing in the middle of nowhere in New Mexico. Thankfully they were running two so we kept power in the cars since it was the lead locomotive that ended up on the ground. Miss those days

Several years ago before the big virus, I road this RR. Really enjoyed it. At the time, the diesel was in use. Nearing the end of the line at the turn table along with the gentle swaying of the cars, I fell asleep. The engineer slowed the train to a stop so smoothly that he didn't wake me up. A crew member working the passenger cars had to wake me up. I laughed and said, "send my compliments to the engineer for such a smooth stop." I hope to return and ride the steam train someday.

    • @ccrx6700

It is a very nice ride isn't it Daniel. Many people find it easy to
fall asleep riding the rails so don't feel bad about that. It's rhythmic and lulls one to sleep. Imagine being a mid night shift
train operator trying to stay awake all night! Really appreciate your watching and may you have a very good day my friend.

Yes Dave, that GE #558 certainly was built for the Norfolk Southern...a DASH 8-32B, or as the railfans simply call it, a B32-8. You can see the original NS logo in the back of the conductor's and brakeman's seats as she rolls by you. Your keen eyes will also spot that there is no control stand on this side of the engine as it rolled past you, and that the long hood stepwell sports the "F" designating that as the front of the engine. Pure NS circa 1989. Also, the snowplow with the clipped wings...NS. She's looking mighty sharp in that WM Fireballs paint scheme! Bummer you guys didn't get to ride, but maybe when y'all return, 1309 might be doing the honors. 🤠👍

Family time is good anytime, but family time with a train ride is better. Sorry you didn't ride this time but maybe it was a blessing in disguise, at least the train didn't breakdown somewhere after leaving the station with two new riders. The storm Debby that brought Maryland rain brough lots of wind and rain to us in South Georgia. The eye of the Cat 1 came within 20 miles to the east of Valdosta area. We live 7 miles west of the city. Fortunate this time, minor damage, just some limbs down and didn't lose power this time. Will watch the steamer vid. Keep them coming.

#1309 certainly is a big critter, my wife could certainly use that to brew a lot of tea for her and coffee for me! 😁 I just took in your video of the trip behind #1309, the "stack talk" you caught would be worth the trip all by itself.
Sorry you guys got your train cancelled on you, I think it would have been special for your grandson. I've got a great nephew just a little younger than he is I think, and I think he would get a kick out of a train ride behind a steamer, either one of the WM engines or maybe up at Cass. We're still drying out from Debbie here, some of the rivers are still way up from the drenching they got up in the mountains, and we're downhill from those.
Wish you better luck on your next attempt.

Well, boy howdy!! Ironically, I was born in Cumberland, and spent the first 21 yrs. of my life living a few miles West of there. The WM ran behind our house and were still in operation then .. spent many a day "playing" on that railroad, and surrounding areas. I've been a railfan ever since. I'm sure you're well aware that Cumberland was a major rail hub back in the day, and at one point there were 5 different railroads that had trackage through The Narrows .. the WM served quite a few mines in it's heyday. Our family relocated to NC in 1980, but I still call Cumb. home, and go back to visit friends at least once annually. Pretty cool to watch a couple of your vids from there .. as always, thanks for sharing more great content.

I understand your frustration when you offered to help and were turned down. Years ago at we were delivering an A/C machine mechanics use or and expensive tire balancer. The automotive dealership had a forklift. An employee working for that company drove the forklift. He was dreadfully terrible at it. I offered to operate the forklift and told him I had a license etc. He turned me down. At that point I told him, if I drive the forklift and something happens to the machine we sold you, we will go good for it. If you drop it, you have to pay for it. There are a lot of people like that and apparently you ran into a couple. For sure they might say the insurance company won't let you help, but on the other hand you can quickly assess the problem and simply offer good advice without even having to lift a finger, so you wouldn't be breaking any insurance company regulations. So I am quite disappointed how you were treated. Thanks for another great video!

Oups.....but it was a rainy day. And with Debbie.....
I remember long time ago, 2 excursions days on the defunct Lamoille Valley in Vermont. We made on saturday the 50 miles Morrisville Alburgh. It was cloudy and rainy
Probably the last train ever toward Alburgh. We had some troubles with the RS3, but she made it. On sunday behind red RS11 we did the other 50 miles, Morrisville to St Johnsbury. We covered the 100 miles of the line with runpast and rain. No more trains will pass under Wolcott covered bridge, the last one that was on railroad service in the US, nor their horseshoe curve. Only bikes pass there now.

The Western Maryland has always been my favorite RR. I lived just a few blocks from Walbrook Jct. in Baltimore as a young child in the early/mid 1950s. Later, from the period 1965 to 1974, I rode several excursion trains on the WM out of Baltimore to Hagerstown, Cumberland, and Elkins. Beautiful scenery and enjoyable trips! Interesting fact about the WM - the company was noted for using 4 bolt joint bars on their tracks instead of the usual 6 bolt bars. I noticed the 4 bolt bars are still there from WM days.

EDIT: Oh, man - LOVE the 1945 rail!😎 And a Fun Fact: In the late '80's, Coors Brewing would ship cases of Coors to their distributor in Miami, FL in insulated box cars - not refrigerated, just insulated and they'd pack all those cans in their TIGHT. In the 3-ish days it took the train to get to Miami, the temp of the cans barely dropped 5 F!! At the Miami distributor (where the rail cars could actually drive in - it was that huge) they then would be refrigerated. Could still be done that way, I do not know.☺

Like airlines that cancel flights or in this case train rides when they don't have enough custmers to make it worthwhile. I've gone to ride trains before and they never even opened up to sell tickets. You can't get mad because they operate on shoestring crew and funds.

    • @ccrx6700
      @ccrx6700  24 дні тому

Your right about their operating budget, they sorely need a lot
of ties replaced but no money to do it Gary. Not enough riders
could very well have been the reason or a good part of why
they didn't run. At 11;30 when the train was supposed to leave
there were less than 50 people there.

A friend of mine owned that 558 and leased it to WMSR, I believe that they bought it, was a former NS locomotive. They do a good job there.. did a cab ride in one of the GP30s we had a pair on our train. Turned them on the table up at Frostburg.

    • @ccrx6700
      @ccrx6700  28 днів тому +1

Your right Kevin NS built it from a kit supplied by GE. Pretty cool
your friend once owned it. I do like the black color on it, reminds
me of the PRR black locos. Yes WMSC does a good job, it
is an impressive place and a fun ride too. The only problem with
1309 is they can't use that turntable, it's too long to fit on it.

First time I rode the WMSR was in 1989 behind a beautiful steam engine. I believe it was ex Canadian Pacific. Belonged to a fellow named Ross Roland if I recall. Many times afterwards in various diesels painted for WM. Last time in 2016 we rented the caboose, unfortunately a rock slide shut half the line.

Awww gee whizz 😢 that just sucks family didn’t get to enjoy …. Here in Michigan?? Once a year they fire up the old steam engine A run from Indiana to Michigan on an old scenic track… It the absolute greatest ! When I was a kid I lived in Ohio a besides the old Wabash cannonball tracks an seen it a few times … 😂 I should be in jail for life for the amount of United States currency I laid on the tracks an defaced government property ( yep it was against the law as well laying coins on the track 🤷🏻‍♂️ I was a young kid ) an after the train went I’d walk the tracks for weeks looking for the egg coins .. lol I found about 5% rest must of stuck to the wheels till their was nothing left …. lol this old man now wishes I had the coins back I would be rich😂 back in the days a penny was near pure copper an a nickel was nickel dimes an quarters actually had silver in them 50 cent pieces?? Like a silver dollar always shot out from the track a wheel🤔🤔 2 a.m.? She would go through an hear the whistle blowing at 3 intersections … I remember finding Lt. blue glass marbles between the rails over the years I have lost track of all but 1 .. back in them days the power lines AN phone lines ran down the tracks… I loved winter time the engine would blow snow 20-25 feet each side of the tracks …. lol that’s back in the late 50’s early 60’s …. I will always have a soft spot I. My ❤ for the old engine s….. I seen spikes 1/2 out seen nuts missing off of splice plates… a kid living beside the rails😂😂

Based upon the quip about 2.5 minutes in, one is able to deduce that GE diesel-electric locomotives must not be very reliable, at least not as reliable as EMDs.

@@ccrx6700But Dave, sometimes the rain and fog can make for some very intriguing, interesting and sort of eerie/creepy videos.
You never know how the weather can turn an outing into something out of the ordinary.
It's why when I railfanned, I would go out in all kinds of weather conditions and video trains.
However severe weather like tropical storms or hurricanes, those were definitely no-goes.
However, thunder/lightning⚡storms, I videoed from inside my vehicle under those conditions when one would pop up suddenly, which happens in Florida quite regularly.
But I always loved to video trains in misty rain and foggy conditions, especially if I could do it from a cemetery that was next to the tracks in foggy weather, talk about some eerie/creepy feel, and if there was a crossing the train had to blow the horn, and ring the bell, even better.🤣🤣🤣🤣
