Riding the Rails MP 0.0 to MP 4 on the Cumberland Mine Railroad

- Опубліковано 4 чер 2022
- You can take a track ride with me as I give you a tour of our
track here at the Cumberland Mine Railroad. This will be a 4 part mini
series. Today we start out at the prep plant and travel to
mile post 4. In the 3 follow up videos you will see the entire
line from start to finish, 16.8 miles on this very unique short line railroad.
So many folks have asked me to see the entire track so hope you
enjoy these videos and get a better understanding of what all our
railroad here is about.
We haul exclusively coal from the mine and prep plant located at Kirby Pa.
to a river barge loading facility at Alicia Pa. on the Monongahela River.
Almost all of our coal is for domestic steam power plant generation.
We do sell some coal to a concrete plant that is taken by barge to LaBelle Pa.
where it is off loaded and put on CSX trains. We currently also sell
some coal to Hyundai located in Korea and S. America and
that coal is sent via CSX from LaBelle to Baltimore Md. for overseas shipment.
We have 3 locomotives, 2 of which are EMD SD 38-2. #1 was built in
1975 just for this mine, #22 was built in 1978 for Yankeetown Docks
and #3098 is an EMD SD 40-2 built in 1966 for Southern Pacific.
(built as an SD 40, converted to a dash 2 by Boise Locomotive Works
after the SP/UP merger upon which it was retired and sold to Boise).
First video in the series from MP 0 to MP 4 is here:
• Riding the Rails MP 0....
From MP 4 to MP 8
• Riding the Rails MP 4 ...
From MP 8 to MP 12.5
• Riding the Rails MP 8 ...
From MP 12.5 to MP 16.8 End of line
• Riding the Rails MP 12...

Your very welcome Donald. This series of rides was made specially for you. You've been one of our early subscribers and I know you've wanted to see this track for a long time now. We so have appreciated your wonderful support my good friend. And making this video I often was thinking of you!!!
Dave, if nobody has told you, people like you are the reason I love youtube. Real working people, not professionals showing us things we would'nt ordinarily see. We love you, keep it up.
Well golly gee.... what a very nice thing to say. Your comment is
very much appreciated. We really thank you for stopping by and
taking in the presentation today my friend.
Please be sure to thank your company for allowing you to do this and show us behind the scenes!
Thanks Peter for the very kind words and I will do that. This is
a pretty cool company to work for, we are pretty lucky indeed.
Appreciate your writing in and for stopping by today my friend.
When it started I said to myself, "Ugh, 24 minutes of slow-moving track footage". But the excellent commentary and stories kept me interested; and when you announced it was over it caught me by surprise, in that the video went by so fast! Excellent video.
Thank you so much Northern Chev, when I was making it and the
minutes kept climbing on the video counter I was getting worried
that no one would want to watch this long a video, so your
wonderful comment has really made me feel much better now.
So appreciate your riding along with us tonight my good friend.
@@ccrx6700 Well I certainly enjoyed the full 24:49 and I am waiting for the next segment.

@@ccrx6700 Fer sure fer sure!
Fantastic stuff most people never get to see. There is a location on the old CT&V division called "Bryan's landing". Someone (finger pointing to myself) went through a private dirt driveway crossing, and it was a rain sleet snow mix and miserable. This dummy didn't get out to make sure he cut the flanges through, but instead felt the truck run smooth, so just was sure as heck he was good...........Until the track made a left hand turn and the truck went straight. You know, I never dreamed I could almost bend a steering wheel trying to turn it.....and my foot put the brake pedal into the floor. but the tires left the rail as I bounced on the flanged wheels on the ties....no brakes on those railroad wheels....found out that ballast and radiators don't like each other either as the truck came to a stop at about a 45 deg. angle over the ballast line! First you say it, then you do it. LOL I learned my lesson. :) This was back around 89 or 90 when I was young and dumb. I am not the young part anymore! :)
Thank you very much Bryan, really great to hear you enjoyed it
and we do want to say how much your comment and watching

Happy to hear you enjoyed and thanks so much for riding along
with me today mathue.
What an outstanding video. I've always wanted to see the very beginning of the line where the cars are loaded. Getting to ride the rails with you and listening to your stories and history of the line is a real treat. I did have two questions, though. First, what is "long-walled"? I don't think I've ever heard that term before. Second, I realize that with two locomotives, you don't need to use the run-around track normally, but is it still in good enough shape to use if needed?
Re "Long-Walling", Copied Dave's answer to another comment:
There are 2 methods of mining coal, room and pillar and long walling
for under ground mines. Room and pillar they leave blocks of
coal that are not mined out which support the strata above the
coal seam. With long walling they take all the coal out and the
the entire roof falls in behind the mining operation which also
drops the ground surface.
Hope this helps, it did for me. And Thanks Dave!
Thank you Thom.
Thank you Dave very much for the tour of the track. The commentary was excellent there is a lot of history in those track's. These video's are a walk back in history when the mine was built. Looking for more video's in this series. ❤❤🇨🇦

Fascinating to hear about the hill sliding down to the tracks. Sounds like a big mess to clean up.

Very glad to hear you are enjoying the videos Thomas. Thanks for the nice comment and for taking the time to check out the riding the rails show my friend.
Very nice Dave. If I remember right, our colour wasn't great here either last fall. I always look at woodlots and forests here from the roads during spring and fall. If you know the sequence of tree species when they tend to come out in leaf, or lose their leaves, you can get a good idea of what species are dominating or present. Oaks are about the last to come out in leaf, and about last to lose their leaves. Beech saplings tend to hold their dead leaves through the winter and are easy to spot in winter. Where I live is the same kind of forests (originally) as much of the eastern U.S., so I grew up thinking it "typical". But relative to the rest of Canada, South Western Ontario is pretty unique this way. There's tree species like Paw Paw, Kentucky Coffee, maybe Shag Bark Hickory and a few others that only grow here.
Thank you very much Rod, really great to hear you enjoyed it
and we do want to say how much your comment and watching

So the mountain slid, eh? Back on 14 Apr '83, when I lived in Utah, there was a mountain that slid a tad. Ever hear of a place called Thistle, on the DRGW? Messed things up for several months. Thing that I loved was it took the DRGW only three months to survey 5 miles of bypass right of way (including a 3,000 ft tunnel), grade it and lay track, running the first revenue train on July 4th. (They took their time for the second line and tunnel.) Thing I loved was that it took the U.S. Guvment that long just to decide what they were going to do with US HWY-6/89!
Love your vids!
Glad you are enjoying the videos Tom and we do appreciate
your stopping by and for sharing the comment with us my friend.
