    Amazing. That looks quite hard work! I was fortunate enough to go air to air refuelling with the RAF a couple of years ago. We had Typhoons alongside.....some newbies, some clearly old hands. Incredible and really challenging, but with rotors.....that adds something just a tad more dynamic to the whole situation!! Great post, thanks.

    I don't see how this would be more effective then refueling on an airbase. Sure if you had to exceed the range of your aircraft to reach a specific target then this would certainly be useful. But otherwise...eh...

      @@adam45011 The propellers move heaps of air and create alot of lift over the wing at low speeds compared to a jet, which needs airspeed to create lift over the wing. It's pretty much a massive stol aircraft.

    Fixed wing pilots fly through the air, they just Thrust through.
    Helicopter pilots beat the air into submission with their gigantic Titanium balls!
    (Brass is too heavy... Tankers and ground forces keep the Brass balls)

    Holy crap that fuel must be under some serious pressure to fill up a tank as big as that helicopters in such a short time. Those tanks hold several hundred gallons...

    Bloody hell that's difficult! Plus the added adrenaline from actually being able to sever that fuel line with the main rotor. This makes aerial planes refueling look easy

    Now that I think about it, this is harder since the pilot needs to mind the chute not hitting the main rotors. I guess that's why the probe is very long.

    That looks like a bunch of ignoring your gut instincts flying up to that for refuelling. Then maintaining the right speed and attitude throughout. Intense flying.

    Question : What do you look at? The drogue ? I've heard when you tank off a boom you don't look at it or you'll start oscillating, you look at reference lights and let the boom op fly it. With the drogue is there a reference point, or just fly the probe tip in?

    What a great find! I worked on avionics on both HH -3s & HC-130s at Hill AFB in the early 1970's - including the Cubic ELF in the Super Jollies. Met two of my unit's birds at Hill Aerospace Museum, & donated Comm Shop night shift log book there back in May 2019.

    They made that look like stopping at a Shell for some unleaded. That is hard as fa and nothing good can come out of a failure there. Our armed forces are the best trained with the best people in the world.

    Where is the wake turbulence? You were directly behind his left wingtip at one point but does not seem to effect the helicopter.

      It's just hard to see and it's more prevalent on the right side, we definitely feel it though.

    Procedures hasn't changed much since when I was flying during the late 90's. Cockpit still looks the same as well, thought the 60 would have received a glass cockpit upgrade like the Kilo model by now.

    maybe a dumb question but are there any safety measures in place for if the rotors hit the fuelline? like it giving way easy so incase that happens the heli doesn't crash?

    Like it how the pilot pull up to flatten the fuel line (and avoid risking to cut it with blades) and out to avoid wakes.
    Is that fuel boom retractable in some sort ?

      Nope, AFAIK it's fixed in place.

      The probe does extend & retract. I'm not sure of the exact length, but the fixed portion is about six feet, then it extends another six feet.
