  • Factory Farming: Over 99% of farm animals in the U.S. are raised in factory farms, which focus on profit and efficiency at the expense of animal welfare and environmental annihilation. | Plant Based News' co-founder Robbie Lockie, sat down with
    Leah Garcés, Director, who is the US director of Compassion in World Farming. We met at Extinction and Livestock Conference in London in October 2017.
    Compassion in World Farming (CIWF) is a campaigning and lobbying animal welfare organisation. It campaigns against the live export of animals, certain methods of livestock slaughter, and all systems of factory farming. It has received celebrity endorsements and been recognized by BBC Radio 4 for its campaigning. It has grown to a global movement with partners and supporters concerned about the welfare of farm animals.

      I think the growth of veganism could follow Rogers' bell curve which is not linear. It is usually used how people adapt new technologies.

    The biggest impact we as vegans can have on our planet right now is to spread love and compassion (just as animals can love us unconditionally). It's not about fighting for anything, it's about spreading more love and awareness. Being compassionate towards those that don't understand all of this yet. It took me a few years to fully grasp what's going on in the meat and dairy industry, and now my views on the world have changed. I would never go back to living that way, because I don't look at meat or dairy the same. Not everyone can or will be able to go vegan overnight, but I believe that as long as we continue to love and live by example, then others will want to do the same. 😊

    We don't want better welfare. We want their enslavement and suffering to END. /watch?v=GFMiljz1-mI ❤️ example: Would you ever campaign for people who beat up their wives to only do it once a week, instead of twice a week? No we would advocate for them to don't use violence at all ❤️

    • @julianwarmington1267
      @julianwarmington1267 6 років тому

      Yes, yes Gary Francione is entirely correct, and it's quite fair of you too to quote him.
      Thing is, the situation IS different simply because martial violence is not currently mandated as being acceptable within society, nor structurally nor industrially produced. Animal welfare is not a condoning of the violence, it's a stepping stone to make life ever more difficult for those producers of the noxious products; it's a warning shot that the system is about to collapse.
      Start focusing on getting subsidies and tax breaks for any producers of animal protein-based products cancelled, and big money out of politics (so to more quickly enable the former), and then we'll see the whole structure collapse from the inside out, and the difference between welfare and rights will be a moot point anyway.

    a while ago i asked a friend of me, how can she eat meat. she told me:"i try not to think about it, because the thing is:that meat is soooo tasty. so, when i eat bacon, and stuff,i just try not to think about the fact that its meat."and i tried to take it easy. but i freaked out inside. i thought to myself:how can she be like that?!how can you actually try not to think about what you are eating and not find it wrong that you need to! how can you not see that its so horrible to earth?!and i truly, TRULY, wish that people like her will change. because the situation cant stay like that anymore. the world must go vegan, as soon as possible.

    • @tobyhdr
      @tobyhdr 6 років тому

      Some can break that addiction, some can't. I think that's the weird thing TheNameisMai is addressing. I went vegan 5 years ago at 46 years old. My brother tries but can't quite make the switch, and he has me as a brother with all the info I can link him to! I think it would be helpful to understand why some are prone to addiction and others not so much. Understanding that deeply - and I'm sure it's very complex and there are hundreds of reasons - would mean promoting veganism could be more effective.

      Toby Russell I think it is about the taste. The other day I tried something made of soy that tasted like meat. Try browsing, maybe you'll find something and try to trick yr. brother into it. But try find the product that isn't packed in plastic, the other big source of environmental damage.

    I would very much like to see a much bigger effort of to dispel the protein myth rather than reinforce it. Labeling a small subset of vegan/plant foods as "protein" foods implies that there are non-protein vegan/plant foods and nothing could be further from the truth. All plant foods have protein and even more important all have some amount of all of the essential amino acids. So rather than push vegan "protein" foods as an alternative to animal foods, I think it would be much better to work to cure our society of its obsession with protein. Sure highly processed foods like Beyond Meat can really help those still brainwashed in the cult of protein to ease their way out, but it should only be a way station, not a final destination. There are so many more whole plant foods that are far more healthful than fake meat.

They have taken over those beaches! Honestly, how will people believe the rest when one fact stands out as a blatant lie?

    Hmm... This is a well conducted interview (although the mic on her could have been louder; her voice is a bit muffled and unclear at some points), but it feels a bit like sitting down for a polite conversation with the devil's PR rep.
    Perhaps some clarity is helpful: the greenhouse gas effect is having devastating consequences around the world already, and the largest contributor to it is industrial animal agriculture as practiced in developed countries such as Aotearoa New Zealand, where three times the natural number of cows per hectare are supported by importing feed such as palm kernel from Indonesia (which in turn contributes further to deforestation there).
    The greenhouse gas problem as caused by the western industrial nations' farms is now so dang 'bad' that it is not just that we need to stop artificially inseminating mother cows against their will (read: rape for profit) so to reduce the herd sizes to 'natural' numbers, but rather, we need to be actively inventing ways to remove about half the amount of greenhouse gasses from the atmosphere as quickly as possible (a scaleable technology that does not even exist yet) ... while also at the same time restoring vast tracts of land to forest instead of livestock grazing fields or hugely massive farmed animals' effluent ponds.
    So, chatting with an industry rep. who cheerfully talks of engaging with big business seems way counter intuitive, even if what she says is essentially accurate; sure it's lovely that Tyson Meats invested an initial measly 5% in plant-based 'meats,' but, what we really need to be seeing is her call for an international industry-wide revenue neutral greenhouse gas fee placed as a blanket across all forms of animal agriculture, and an immediate end to all forms of subsidies and tax incentives to all forms of livestock 'farming,' with a redirection of those funds to production and promotion of whole plant-based foods, reforestation, and, to a lesser extent, the support of the nascent processed 'fake meat' industry.
    - So anyway, PBN, how come no questions about subsidies for animal agriculture in developed countries, nor even mention of a greenhouse gas fee?

    People are eating more meat than ancestors because of urbanisation in India mainland. I don't think that in current phase Indians eat less meat albeit the political system is changing in India after the right wing government is winning elections after election without stopping and I think it would affect Indians eating habits and they will become vegetarians in near future. Meat is the taboo for the right wing of India in contrast vegetarian is the taboo for the USA. In USA a congressman can't say he is vegan but in India the leaders especially right wing can't say they eat meat otherwise they would soon lose their seat.

    hunting animals for sport is NOT the same as factory farming, but both are indefensible from different view points .
    animals living in the wild who are then killed by high powered rifles is NOT a life of suffering followed by painful death.
    however hunting for sport IS no sport as the animals only want to live,not be predated on and pose little challenge to a modern equipment.

    • @user-gu9yq5sj7c
      @user-gu9yq5sj7c Рік тому

      Hunting causes suffering too. It's often not a swift kill, but pelting animals with bullets while they're trying to escape, being left in bear traps for days, or poison. That's kind of often part of the point of hunting for sport, to stretch it out and enjoy shooting at animals. The clue is calling hunting a sport. Hunters also kill animals they don't eat like bears. Some of them just like to take selfies of it and boast about it.
