  • Corticosteroid medications are commonly used to treat many types of diseases, ranging from asthma to arthritis. Many people, after taking corticosteroid medications for long periods of time, begin to gain weight, have high blood pressure, and become weaker, a set of symptoms known as Cushing's Syndrome. Tune into this episode of Medicurio to learn why these symptoms occur and how Cushing's Syndrome is related to Addison's Disease.

    So I’ve been on steroids since last August, managed to come down from 40 mg to 13 mg but recently I’m feeling so overwhelmed and have so much an anxiety. I know it’s because of the steroids but my doctors not helping. I’ve gained so much weight, and every time I get up I get syncope type symptoms and a pressure headache that goes away after a few minutes. Shall I increase steroids back up or do I keep on my weaning plan.
    What causes these symptoms, I know you will say go and get checked but I’m wondering what your opinions maybe .

    I have all the symptoms except high blood pressure. I was 160 lbs and now 211 lbs in just 5 months. I have the moon face and a hugh belly with the stretch marks. How to test for Cushing's? Blood test or MRI?

    • @Medicurio
      @Medicurio  7 років тому +1

      Since Cushing's syndrome is due to elevated cortisol levels, the usual tests are to check cortisol levels in the urine, saliva, and blood. You can also test if your body is resistant to cortisol by administering dexamethasone (similar to cortisol). Normally, people's cortisol levels will go down after dexamethasone because it has negative feedback on the hypothalamus and anterior pituitary, but people with Cushing's syndrome will still have high cortisol levels. Talk to your doctor about your symptoms and get your cortisol levels checked at a hospital ASAP.

      Check cortisol and ACTH. But it also could be only a thyroid problem. First check your thyroid.

    Hi,I have gone through the use of very heavy doses of carticostoroid pills and shots both tougher at a very heavy doses for two months,that time I was not aware of the side effects,but after 4 year plus of that coure my life is getting more and more complicated,I always feel dizzy,less enrgy,anixity,pain in my cheast,severe weight loss and increased gloucose levels, after 4 year of that medication till now I have not recovered,so does it mean that my adrenals are permanently shut down or I have got primary Addison diseases

    • @Medicurio
      @Medicurio  6 років тому

      You should definitely go see a doctor about your symptoms and bring up the possibility of Addison's disease. Stopping heavy corticosteroid use may result in secondary Addison's disease.

    Why would low cortisol level decreases ACTH secretion ???!!

    • @Medicurio
      @Medicurio  6 років тому +2

      High cortisol decreases ACTH secretion via negative feedback. Low cortisol shouldn't decrease ACTH secretion

      Hahahaha... It must be because he's south African... Just like me!
      No.... Reducing cortisol is not the best way to manage this disease. The body naturally raises its cortisol levels in order to MANAGE the presence of Inflammation....Elevated glucose levels is ALSO A NATURAL RESPONSE of the body to Chronic Inflammation. The INFLAMMATION at its ROOT CAUSE must be dealt with, and the symptoms will slowely disappear... What many people don't know is that
      Cushing Syndrome is strongly linked to Intestinal Parasites....causing Chronic Inflammation... Raising Cortisol levels... Which allows proliferation of Intestinal Nematodes such as whip worms, tape worms, thread worms, pin and hook worms causing havoc to the Endocrine System. These nematodes also produce their own hormones further disrupting the delicate balance of hormones. The Species causing Spondylitis are very hard to detect in tests and often overlooked in stool analysis. Treatment that is usually effective is: Ivermectin & Albendazole Combined, and repeated after several weeks.... Messing with the endocrine system by taking medications to reduce cortisol and blood glucose will further upset the endocrine system. These nematodes rob the body of vital minerals,... damage the digestive tract..., so to the treatment regime should include natural Vitamin, mineral, Trace mineral and natural sea Salt supplementation. And soon followed by a healthy whole food plant based diet.... Animal products should be completely avoided for a period of time to avoid reinfection. This is a simple and cheap treatment anyone can try before looking at other factors....

    cushings can be causes by an adrenal tumor , not just the pituatary.

    • @Medicurio
      @Medicurio  7 років тому +3

      Absolutely. I talk about tumors in the adrenal gland a little bit (@1:54) but tumors in the pituitary are by far the most common reason for endogenous Cushing's syndrome and is known as Cushing's disease. Both lead to high cortisol levels, and both can be treated by surgically removing the tumor.

    • @Medicurio

      Perhaps your doctor meant that there were no significant side effects if taken properly at the right doses? You should ask him/her about it next time. It is important to have a good patient-doctor relationship where both sides explain everything clearly.
