SLC is such a special place. Even the roof of a parking garage has mind-blowing views.

I'm impressed you can talk so intelligently about this off the cuff for 20 minutes. I wish i was so informed about something!

It sounds like salt lake City wants to convert their light rail network into an above ground subway. If that is what they're trying to do, as a newly minted New Yorker, I can assure you that your community will grow to greatly appreciate that.

Pedestrian grade separations don't have to be underpasses. Look at 300 north. There are pedestrian only bridges crossing over the freeways all over Utah, with more planned. The Davis county I-15 expansion has several and they are planned to extend over the rails as well.

@railroader921 The 300 north bridge is OK. I'm glad it gives pedestrians options. But it's pretty useless for things like ambulances, fire trucks, or bus routes.

@@CSLenhart At the 6 minute mark you say that there are no plans in the works to grade separate the rail crossings down town. That is incorrect. There are plans to grade separate 800 south and 900 south, which would create underpasses for cars, and overpasses for the SUPs. There are also plans to for the Folsom trail that include grade separated SUPs.

I just want to add that this is one of the best videos that you have put out. We really need to start talking about the obstacles that stand in our way and you are starting to actually do that in the video. I have always said that I am a fan of your work, but RGP/Via Rio Grande in its current form wont work. I do believe that we will solve for all the issues and get there.

@@CSLenhart The plan is to have both, of course. Underpasses for automobiles, and overpasses for shared use paths (SUPs)

No build would be the biggest mistake of a generation! We must build the Rio Grande Plan! We can build the Rio Grande Plan! But that means citizens must speak up to their friends, neighbors, politicians, and business owners to push for this plan.

No build is a tragic option 😢 Utah and Salt Lake City have the ambition to be bigger and better than they are, the Rio Grande Plan would prove once and for all that Utah is not for small solutions, but for longstanding ones

Any system in its current configuration is set up to achieve its desired result. Our government is very reactive but also built upon private interest and upside down priorities. Sometimes you need to let the current system fail. It’s sad that it will take more time, money, and lives. Can’t win against fools.
More transit oriented development is inevitable as we approach a more energy scarce future.
We are just waiting for the old guard to figure that out or retire.

Fact check. The increases in train traffic from the SLC Intermodal Facility (called the "Ramp") and the UIPA - Northwest Quadrant project involve moving freight east and west, not north and south. The train traffic will increase on the Lynndyll Subdivision (west of 600 west going to Las Vegas) and the Salt Lake Subdivision (East of 600 west going to Ogden/Wyoming), but won't likely impact the Provo Subdivision (South Temple and going south to Provo/Colorado). If the automobile transloading facility (called the "Autoramp") were to move to the Northwest Quadrant, there would actually be a significant decrease in freight rail traffic through the Rio Grande and Granary neighborhood districts.

Fact check. Housing is already being built near Central Station. The tracks were not the sole reason that development has stalled in the area. I would argue that it was due to the large population of unsheltered people living there. Now that those facilities are being relocated, Salt Lake City planning has huge plans for the Rio Grande District that include hundreds of new apartments, an Olympic training center, and even new skyscrapers.
