Wow! So glad I found this concert posted! Listened to this very concert on Dutch radio and recorded it when i was a teenager. Love this version of Sunny Side of the Street.... pure joy!!
Wow! Absolutely magical! Whenever I play a recording of Lionel Hampton, I see him dancing on the stage. His energy infected everyone up there. Ray Bryant, one of my favorite jazz pianists, and Arnett Cobb!! What a great mood lifter during another COVID lockdown!
Here is a time index of songs and the (sax) solo's 00:35 - Airmail Special (Hampton, 05:00 - Ain't Misbehavin' (Hampton, Joe Newman, Arnett Cobb at 9:45, Cat Anderson) 13:30 - Moment's Notice (Paul Moen at 15:25, Hampton, sax special at 18:30) 19:40 - Blues (Band introduction, Ray Briant, Billy Mackel, Joe Newman, Charles McPherson at 26:57, Kai Winding, Arnett Cobb at 30:30) 33:48 - On The Sunny Side Of The Street (Arnett Cobb at 33:50, Hampton) 40:00 - Hamp's Boogie (Ray Briant, Hampton, Arnett Cobb at 44:33, Big party!!!) 47:22 - Flying Home (Pepper Adams at 48:30, Bennie Powell, Arnett Cobb at 51:34, Big party!!!)
wonderful to s e e my hero of my youth, michiel de ruyter!! thanks a lot. he was the one who teached me via his Geschiedenis van de Jazz into the world of jazz! thanks a lot!!! keep boppin´ marcel
Star line-up! The GREAT Ray Bryant on piano and ace horns (Joe Newman, Cat Anderson a.o.on trumpet) Arnett Cobb (ts) Kai Winding (tb) and Panama Francis on drums; hardly believable to see so many top players in one band! Of course Lionel Hampton is no slouch either... Was very fortunate to attend North Sea Jazz a number of times. Started in 1975 with the presentation of the (then) newly started Pablo album: Ella, Basie, JATP, Oscar/Niels/Joe, all the horns and I'm sure to be forgetting a few names. Absolutely TOP! Visited the consecutive 3 times and a number of times afterwards. A not to be forgotten experience!!
After such appreciation warming up, the gap at 39:58 is heartbreaking; would love to know why? Still, one of the best professional live jazz productions imo; the close-ups provide intimacy, the true feelings and wow, well done. inspirational. talk about capturing a live performance can not be complete without considering this............
Pure Magic . some of these guys are gone now , May they never be forgotten, Arnett Cobb giving 100% everyone is cooking here ,
Never has a musician deployed such energy for more than 70 years with such virtuosity, swing, groove as Mr HAMPTON ❤❤❤❤❤
And improvisation
IL GENIO DEL VIBRAFONO è di tutti strumenti a percussione !! Vero SWING, JAZZ !!

Lionel didn't just play the music, he lived the music. Pure gold.
