As I lay relaxing from a long couple days, couldn’t ask for anything classier, more timelessly perfect to hear. It feels as if Mr Lionel Hampton is serenading me personally. 🌠🎼
It was in Germany in 1965; Augsburg Germany, by accident in the early afternoon one Sunday, that we picked this up just before it began on the Armed Forces Radio Station. It was about three of us. We "understood" who we were hearing - But we didn't expect what we got...........It's been the "Anthem" of my jazz listening days. You guys (and gals) we all should meet up in a stadium, just because of something like this - We are in a special world as we listen. Blessings!
This Stardust is an iconic version...so are all the solos of every musician, but mostly inspired are Slam and L.Hampton himself. For me his best solo ever !
Willie Smith's (1910-1967) alto intro brought gasps from the audience. It gives me the shivers each time I hear it too. To think of all the jazz masters who are gone forever brings a tear to my eye. Thank goodness for UA-cam. Thank you for posting this Hoagy Carmichael masterpiece.
Even if Willie Smith had only recorded this single solo, he would deserve being remembered. Imo, this belongs to the 5 or 6 best alto solos ever recorded. He has been my favorite altoist since I first heard this. Nobody - except Johnny Hodges - had such a fire, such a deeply emotional playing style.
With you. I'm 80 now and could ask, "Why haven't I heard this before?" but I just thank my stars I'm hearing it now. Hope you are still with us lissening and grooving. 😄
Masterful. I have to believe that the great masters of the past - Bach, Mozart, Beethoven - all of whom did a lot of improvising themselves - would have been astounded by the ability of these jazz masters to improvise so ingeniously over the structure of this beautiful song.
I had this as a favourite many years ago... Then discovered both parents had their own favourite take on this HC track... In a disconnected life and world... I feel connected to two of the most influential heart-beats of my life... Despite their passing, I won't let them go that easily.
There's something magical about Stardust no matter whether it was played on a saxophone or the vibraphone. It represents the very best of the big band era of the 40s.
Lionel Hampton's composition of "Star Dust" is a Jazz Classic that time will never erase for generations to come as long as the music industry preserve music of this quality. Lionel Hampton truly was a "Jazz Master". I was fortunate to have met him when I was very young. My parents knew him and his wife Gladys Hampton. Naomi Clark - Jazz Singer
Thank you for your comment. I did not say that Mr. Hampton was the original composer of "Stardust", any artist can have compositions/arrangements on any tune. Their is a big difference. Stardust is a standard and many artist's have recorded Hoagy Carmichael's song.. Lionel Hampton is one of the many artist's who have recorded this magnificent standard "Stardust". Naomi Clark Jazz Singer
My first introduction to live jazz. Seeing the Lional Hampton Band when bands were travelling and taking their music around. It was a high school in Moncton New Brunswick , Canada. Hamp was the ultimate performer in those days. I was about 14 or 15 years old and we had driven a hundred miles to see this great band. At that time Hamp played the music as recorded on this album. I still love this form of jazz and continue to search it out. I'm 82 now and wishing for more of this type of jazz.
l was 20 and my future mother in law (a beautiful lady) used to play this, offer me a little wine while she'd cry. i'd be so confused then but l can understand how music affects us now. l wanna cry myself.
Quite possibly the ultimate version of this American classic. Every person who aspires to be a musician should be made to listen these magnificent artists.
I remember the first time I heard this, somewhen in the early '50s. My closest buddy at the time invited me to come listen to it. Man O man, I was floored, still am. And there's Slam Stewart too.
I heard this tune for the first time by the end of 1958 on the radio station Voice of America, transmitter Tanger. Since then I have been searching for the buddies featuring that tune. Unfortunately I did'nt find any information i.e. who plays the alto, the guitar, the tenor, the piano and the trumpet. Do you have more information on this issue? Thanks.
@@haraldrch04 Willie Smith plays the alto sax, Corky Corcoran the tenor, Barney Kessel the guitar, Tommy Todd the piano, and Charlie Shavers the trumpet.
I remember this song as a teen. I was truly captivated by it. Little did I know that I was listening to some of the best that musicians of all time. The momentum keeps building and Lionel takes it home.
One of my most treasured recordings out of hundreds (on 78rpm) how it isnt worn out by now Ill never know. If Im ever despondent about my playing I listen to this and I cant wait to get playing again !
One question Talbot, I remember hearing this song in my crib, my father played it a lot it was his favorite. The version he had and I still have was on a mono 33.3 RPM record, that I made still have? I knew where all the pops skips and noise was on the record. I was also given and played 78 RPM records when I got older, and this song is over 15 minutes, most 78's only played 5-6 minutes per side, and the longest 78 record ever made was almost 8 minutes by Frank Sinatra. Are you sure you have the 78 RPM version, or do you have to turn it over? Back in the in the 70's, I bought another 33 PRM version of this , and then the CD version in 1984 or '85 when jazz & classical CD's were produced more than rock and R&B disc.
Sorry rioleo8 just picked up your post on Google/Picasa ! Quite right Star Dust is mono33 with The Man I Love on side b.I had to dig out my old collection to check which has prompted me to dust off my record player to revive a few memories !!
Thanks Talbotvanman, I have the same one I believe, thanks for checking that out, I have the same one I believe from 1947 before I was born and the remake white jacket one shown on here. I've given away most of my vinyl collection when it was replaced with a comparable CD. I hate surface noise, ticks and pops. Plus most people alive today never played a record, and what stopped some of the playing of 78's were that the needle or stylus used were bigger than that of a 33/45 and or they stopped making players with that speed. I replaced and fixed many reversible needles, and when the 33/45 side stopped playing, they flipped over to the 78 side, and worst were the people who put coins on the arm to weigh it down. I myself used sewing needles or nails when the needles broke to play 78's my parents didn't want on some 78 rpm player I was given as a child that had no speakers. You put in the needles, and it had a large headed screw to hold the needles in place. I don't think I ever saw a 16 - 2/3 rpm record though, but I've seen that speed on some players.
Lionel Hampton's Music is without a doubt one of the greatest musician's of all time. This composition has all of the qualities of Jazz Greatness. Unfortunately many young musician's today are not aware of Jazz Musician's of this musical quality. What has happened to American Jazz.? Naomi Clark - Jazz Singer
As shiny shimmering and golden as BillyButterfield is Artie Shaw its not the last word....Willie Smith created a miracle. Stardust Hamp is profound here. This is a dance of the sphereson God's stage.

The BEST version....... if there is one. If you requested this, it was considered common and overplayed. RUBBISH. An absolute CLASSIC like Bunny B 's Can't Get Started. And all the time that chugging beat in the background (as Louis Armstrong's version of 1931)The Mother of all Vibe players

THE GREATEST EVENING IN THE HISTORY OF JAZZ
This Stardust is an iconic version...so are all the solos of every musician, but mostly inspired are Slam and L.Hampton himself. For me his best solo ever !
Yes Eduardo his best solo ever for sure he did not compose it but made it his own with this recording !
Willie Smith is great here, too
C'mon, do not forget about Barney! Great solo! This man was inspired always.
Genius. Elegance. Art. Life. Love. Breathe. Time Out Of Mind.

This record has changed my life...
@@Laurenzatto54 Ha! I'm so glad! Is there a story to that?
The amazing and super talented, Lionel Hampton. How I love his music! So smooth, so glorious! Such a delight. He is one "far out" musician!
Happy Birthday, Lionel Hampton! ❤

Mario Maciel Please allow me to make a correction- Stardust was composed by Hoagy Carmichael, not Lionel Hampton.

well then you'd have to rephrase it. It is a rendition, not a composition. And no, artist cannot have"compositions" of any tune.
l was 20 and my future mother in law (a beautiful lady) used to play this, offer me a little wine while she'd cry. i'd be so confused then but l can understand how music affects us now. l wanna cry myself.

The composition is a Hoagy Carmichael composition, written in 1927.
Hoagy Carmichael wrote it, and thousands of people have performed it. It's part of the standard jazz language now.
