All you need is a couple of tuners, strings, pickup, some wire and a shovel.
Yup! Or some scrap wood, a neck and a few parts!
All you need is any old pickkup, an output jack, some strings, some tuning heads, and some wire
Rob Scallon?
check out Justin Johnson 3string shovel! He's a really impressive player & sounds better on a fretless 3 string shovel than I ever will on any instrument lol.
Hey Tim as a long time subscriber and young woodworker with no access to big expensive tools, I really appreciate you throwing in some of the old school handmade stuff in. On that note I am not one that is totally negative on your new content. Everyone grows personally and professionally...especially with technology, totally understand the new stuff just appreciate the old as well. Keep it up.
Right on. I hear you. My YT work (which is still a hobby at best, financially) has morphed several times over the 7 years I've been making these vids I imagine you are also different than you were 7 years ago with different things and interests? Interestingly, my very first video was me rebuilding a bass guitar; I have plans to do a similar thing again.
The truth is the past few months, the videos I have made making furniture and other non-guitar related things have been my worst-performing and not particularly fun for me to make.
I guarantee with only a few minutes of searching, you will find other UA-cam makers who are doing now what I was doing then (but probably better and with better cameras! haha!) that will fill the void I left and I hope you stay here to watch the videos that interest you and skip the ones that don't.
That anyone at all will take 10 minutes of their week to tune in to my life is amazing to me!
@Zach Isley hey :) could we get in contact please ? i want to make guitars but I would like to ask questions...
I wish that I had this channel when I was a kid!
Thanks u so much boss
I don't know how to thank u enough ,but I pray that you live long
Such a good idea, wish you all the very best with this.
It’s great seeing the way your videos are evolving. Cheers Tim.
As a woodworker and guitarist, this got me excited!
i love this, The kits and videos are a good idea. I can imagine a teen getting one and opening up new worlds.
that's one of the main demographics I am imagining
Tim, this is simply awesome.
What a brilliant idea, mate. 👍
Kit form custom home made guitars. 👌
thanks! We'll see if the public agrees :)
Very cool Tim, this is great for people who like to build and want to try building a guitar for the first time. I build custom guitars out of my home shop and really love it. This is a great channel.
thanks! I wanted to eliminate some of the guesswork to help people get started - plus i give real detailed video instructions along with it.
Awesome Tim! Thank you 💚
Good idea!
I had a cnc disaster last night. Headstock I was cutting came loose, busted the bit and ruined the part. Ready for a redo tomorrow.
I've had that happen. It sucks.
tim sway today’s redo was a success
Awesome stuff Tim! 😃👍🏻🎸👊🏻
Cool brother I’m glad things are going good for you.
I love new perspective instruments , greetings from argentina !
Great job, Tim.
Thanks Cammie!
This is a super cool idea! The price point makes this a really attractive option. I'll be keeping an eye on these. Thanks for sharing!
thanks man!
You're just THA DUDE man... you've got the best criteria, (perspective actually) for making wood instruments. It's very remarkable the respect and conciusnes of WOOD itself that you've got by not only not covering everything with paint but also to make your best to... "immortalize" by showing the wood " accidents" that the tree sufered or just manifests according to nature... And last but not least RECYCLING... God bless...
thanks man
I remember the last 5 years using just forstner bits and a chisel to do all the cavities. Plus no band saw. Oh and using a junior hacksaw or coping saw for fret slots. In the last month i bought a fret ruler, fret saw, band saw and router. OMG HOW DID I MANAGE WITHOUT THEM . Lol
great guitar !, gotta love the recycled wood thing!
this is the coolest thing I've seen in a while!! way to go man, such a cool idea!
hey, thanks bro! wait 'til you see next week's (there are a certain pair of boots featured :)
@@timsway nice! I can't wait to see it!
Tim, this was another fantastic video, the track you laid down with the guitar is one of your best, the kits look super cool.
On that note, would you mind if I recommend one of them to another youtuber who builds guitars from kits? I think he would be really interested in acquiring one.
thank you. of course!
Oh man, talk about exciting stuff, I am definitely gonna check this out!
Cool! There are a few options available at newperspectivesmusic.com
Thankyou ----I will go-ahead and make mine --nice job !
note this was old growth pine, not the stuff they make 2x4s from nowadays.
Nice Work, very cool. Greets from Germany
Nice! I know I should be able to make a body, but the neck and electronics are a bit above me- Imma order one!! 🤘
Man, really cool Kits Tim & the pricing is amazing! That guitar that you were playing sounded great. Good luck with the sales, should sell out fast............... :)
I hope so. I have a few bucks tied up in them! lol
Excellent!
So rad! Gonna save up and order a kit 🤘🏻
awesome man! thanks! I'm slowly stocking premade, one-of-a-kind bodies at newperspectivesmusic.com, too, so in theory one could all the parts and basically only need to sand, finish and assemble.
Huge fan of this one!
Thank you. Now I'm a huge fan of you! :)
Nice video. Cool guitar kit. Mahalo for sharing!🙂🐒
perfect video to give someone the link for that always asks: what do I need to start building guitars ?
SOunds big and clear through your lil tube amp
Really appreciate this video. It's nice to be reminded sometimes that guitars are just wood. That you don't need thousands of dollars of machinery to build them.
Well said.
Is amazing, thanks for teaching.
thanks for watching!
Nice video man
thank you!
2:43 Tim you should’ve just left it like this 😂
Awesomeness
This is so cool! Need some wood for the body and lots of guitar lessons and I'll be a rock star in no time!
Yes, that's all it takes! Get on it!
Kit is such a great idea! You smart. Namaste! : )
This video makes me want to build a guitar; something that never entered my mind as a project. Long ago I knew how to tune one, but I don't know that I would know how to now. Still, I have some wood from what was once a bed headboard and footboard that I haven't figured out a use for yet, so I may have to seriously consider using it to make a guitar.
I'll warn you, making them is addictive; almost no one makes only one :)
@@timsway Good to know. I need to supplement my SS disability income to support my second, (and first love), woodworking career anyway. If I can sell the first guitar for more than I have in it, then I'm all for building more.
Sir you are great coz u give us access to create something new spending less money thank you sir
no, YOU are great! :) Thanks. I only have one kit in stock but am restocking them soon,
@@timsway Thank you so much sir for your kind reply🥰 yes sir plz restocking as early as possible
Would you possibly offer a Bass version of this as well? I would definitely get one!
You and several others have asked! If I recoup my costs on the guitar kits I will reinvest that in basses.
@@timsway I have no doubt you will easily recoup it!
I would totally jump on a bass version if you made one.
cheers! If this does well, I will.
Omg this is awesome
Nice one
Thank you!
Hey Tim, I checked out you’re website and I love it! Is this guitar on your website yet? You really did a nice job with the guitar!
cheers. I probably won't sell this particular one. yet, at least. some are for me :)
@@timsway that's okay that they're not in stock yet. They do look awesome though!
Bravo Bruddah !
thanks, Bill. You know there are other ways to lose weight...
Very Very cooool!!!! I super like this vídeo!!!
This looks like something I could tackle. I'm a lefty, would I simply flip the templates over to accommodate?
yes. This will work lefty. just turn it the other way! I'm left handed, too, but I learned to play right handed and I'm glad because finding good left handed instruments are hard to find. One solution is build your own :)
Extraordinary job! My God! Thanks so much! By Ricardo. São Paulo - Osasco BRAZIL!
thank you!
Looks cool. It does look tricky to get those holes drilled through for the wires at the right angle. Is there a trick to make it easier?
I imagine there is, but I don't know it! Haha! If you make a pencil mark on the top where the bottom cavity is, that would help you visualize it. And plan out the cavity so it's super close to the rear pickup. The shorter the distance the easier it is.
@@timsway Thanks, that helps!
thats a cool idea.
thanks!
When is the bass kit coming? :)
It is on the table, if guitar kit sales pick up a little I will expand the line.
Think I’m going to pick one of these kits up! Does the neck have a truss rod?
Cheers. Yes, it's a pretty standard 25.5" scale, 18" radius guitar neck. All maple. The pocket is a standard array style so the guitar and neck would he interchangeable with many other guitars and parts on the market.
@@timsway Awesome, thanks for the reply!
Any plans for a bass kit? I'd buy one!
If I recoup my investment on guitar kits I plan to reinvest in to bass. So help me sell these guitars! lol
The kit and templates make it seem very approachable. The only thing that got me nervous was when you started fine tuning the frets. 😬
I go into a LOT of detail about that in the full video that accompanies the kit. I was obsessing and trying to make it perfect without any fancy luthier tools for the sake of learning in the video. And it was not difficult. Alternatively, if you really wanted a good setup you could take it to a local luthier, too.
Cool idea. Where do the necks come from ?
I bulk ordered them from a Chinese factory. Over the past year I've bought from several places to compare price per quality, etc., and found these to be a pretty good deal and quality.
How easier it would be by having to plates (top and bottom), bore them separately and then glue them together ?
yea, or just make it from 1/2" material. But sometimes the thinner comes in handy. I talk a lot about the template n the longer series.
really like the sound of that, what amp are you playing it through
the pickups are stelar. We are making and selling those outside of the kit at newperspectivesmusic.com, too. I am using the infamous monoprice $150 Chinese tube amp (search it). The first one I got was defective but this one is great!
@@timsway thanks for the reply my man, really like your channel, though at the moment i'm not in the condition to buy new equip specially foreign equip as i'm in brazil (taxes, shipping and whatnot) however, these pickups will definitely be in my list of parts for when i (hopefully) build something for myself. thanks for letting me know about the amp as well, asked mostly out of curiosity
keep your stuff up! big ups for upcycling material
Tim I am so close to pulling the trigger a d buying a kit...but can you give me a template for a 3x3 headstock instead of 6inline?
The kit comes with the 6 inline tuners. I don't think I have a 3x3 set on hand so you'd need to buy your own, but I'm pretty sure I can cut you a template . You don't NEED a template, tho, you could copy a guitar from home or something, too.
Jeff Goldblum is versatile af
Is there a Bass version of these kits ?
If I recoup my expenses in guitar kit sales, I will absolutely reinvest and make a bass version. Encourage all your six string players to jump in!
If thats the guitar being played it sounds great.
it is! I'm not a good player, tho :)
@@timsway not to bad
I like the cool factor of making stuff out of old materials. I'm not an environmentalist type, but I don't like seeing useful things end up in the trash. Just trying to take full use of what's available to you is always a good thing. Fix your car with stuff from the salvage yard... fix your house with good material that may have formerly been used elsewhere... it's just good mojo.
yea man, you don't have to be a zealot like me. I was a cheapskate long before I was an environmentalist :)
Que estilo q estilo bellesa de gitarra😱
Is this only for this specific guitar or could u make something else using it like a telecaster
there are a couple variations for the kit, one with two single coil pickups and one with twho humbuckers. Not exactly like teles for hardware, but you could make the guitar shape look like anything you want.
@@timsway I see, thank you~
What kind of wood for body ? Is ORDINARY PINE OK ?
this is old pine
One question- when will you release a bass version?
I hope to put something together, but mYbe differently than this.
tim sway I’m a bassist primarily, so I deff want to build a bass. May just make a couple bodies to start, but would purchase the guitar kit as my first, since it’s available
How much is it for a kit and do you have a kit for bass?
No bass kits yet. They range in price from $45 for just the physical templates and instructional videos to $279 for the full shebang with custom humbuckers. Www.newperspectivesmusic.com for more info.
The biggest possible stumbling block that's not explained is how you got your square surfaces for gluing the body blank together.
The wood I used was ready to go off an old piece of furniture.. Sticking with the "hand tools only" theme, that could be done with a skill saw, a hand plane or a bunch of sandpaper glued to the table. If you're a reclaimer like me, you've probably done many of these already or are of the "close enough" mindset/level of woodworking. But if you go shopping, more than likely, the place you buy your wood can joint the edges for you and cut it to size.
Assuming you can get a pre made neck, otherwise you'd need alot more tools and clamps..
Inspiring stuff though 👍
YES. the kits I sell include the necks and literally every piece of hardware you need. The idea is, make your first guitar with a premade neck, then graduate to making your own necks. Trying to start from scratch is overwhelming. you can learn more about the kits at: newperspectivesmusic.com/shop?olsPage=t%2Fdiy-guitar-kits
Sweeeeeeet!!! You make it look so smooth bro ! Awesome... ? I have don't know what it's called.. to me it looks like a blueprint of a Puerto Rican guitar called "Cuatro"! I would like to make a electric guitar out of the way it looks? Cause to make it the way your suppose to is kinda hard! It's made by 3 types of wood "Spruce,Poplar&Mahogany" so you can see what I'm talking about I can send you a pic if you like by email?
you mean you want to make a solid electric version of the cuatro body style? that would work with this kit and be no more difficult than any other electric guitar. I will have a video on acoustics in a couple weeks, but I'm pretty new to that and my acoustic is, uhh, "creative" :)
yes sir and if you can make me the cutouts i'll gladly pay ya tuesday for cuatro cutout today? lol
Ship to Australia?????
sure! It's like $90 in shipping tho :(
This is great idea. But does anyone hate themself so much that they want to watch you for another 90min 😆😂 I'm looking forward to seeing what people make with your kits so please share on Instagram or make a short video of what people create.
if you watch on 2x speed it's only 45 mins. lol And I'm sure there are lots of parts you'll know and can skip over :)
Please restock some time
sorry, I am no longer offering this style kit, I'll be doing something different in the coming months. But you can still buy the templates and access to the tutorial (which will help you see exactly what parts you would need to source yourself): newperspectivesmusic.com/shop/ols/products/diykitplansanddownloads newperspectivesmusic.com/shop/ols/products/p90templates
Damn now I need a reason to have a guitar
no you don't. No reasons necessary :)
Hey Tim this is Tim Williams
Can you make a left handed
Electric
I can and I have. If you want to order one contact me via newperspectivesmusic.com. (I'm a lefty, too, but I play righty)
what about a bass DIY kit??
If the guitar kit does well I will certainly expand. Bass would be first :)
I'd be interested. I was gonna ask the same thing.
Listen this music, please.
✌👍
Wath's up, world? Be like art.
That guitar has a better cavity than my ibanez gio. My guitar body is built like shit. But the neck is good so im okay with it
Grow your beard and hair out some take off the glassed and you’d be my tattoo artist twin brother lol. Just found your channel very cool subbed.
that is me, in a wig :)
👍👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏💓🇮🇹
Can it play chicken in the corn tho?
Telecaster
I literally thought he was Eric Clapton
I dont consider a router a basic tool.
Buy? it is internet all can get free haha
sausage roll
basic hand tools..those are power tools.machines.
I'm not trying to step back in time, I'm tying to make guitar making easily and inexpensively accessible to many. Today, these types of tools are WAY more accessible to find and use than great-grandpa's router planes and the most affordable option to most people.
@@timsway things are way different here in our country..even china made lowend tools cost thousands lol.hope you're in neighborhood so i could borrow yours lol.great video sir
