  • Why this squirrel Adirondack feeder is more profitable than this full-size chair. Grow your woodworking business with "smalls".

    Often, smaller items are looked over by new builders looking to make a name for themselves because they are looking for "that one build" that they can sell for a ton of money. They aren't considering the cost of the build and the time spent making it. Ultimately any business comes down to profit margins. I'll give you a few examples of how selling items that anyone can afford can generate crazy sales with minimal cost of goods sold!
    Sometimes we overthink things when the most profitable items we are looking past. Let's change that.

      @@julieniemeyer925 really well. Mostly gifts but you can add paint to personalize the pieces for different dolls. I also too the basic garden basket idea, made the slats longer, attached them to the centers of the end pieces, and modified the tops of the ends for a doll bed (Some straight cuts and one with a jigsaw cut to resemble a castle). I haven't tried to sell much, but if you have 18' dolls in mind a tweak here and there gets you into the "rustic farmhouse" doll furniture business, and those people (my wife included!) spend big buck on that kind of thing!

    Matthew, I have a question. I apologize if you have already answered this (but I doubt it, as I look forward to, and watch your videos fairly religiously) Why do you flip your boards on medium rips as opposed to just pushing through? I know you have an outfeed table so I am curious if your method is beneficial? Thanks

    • @melodywilson5255
      @melodywilson5255 Рік тому +1

      That's so weird! I was going to ask the same question! I have noticed that from time to time. Is there a safety benefit? Or speed? I would love a quick explanation because you make it look so smooth! I'm afraid to try it.

    • @MatthewPeechWoodworking
      @MatthewPeechWoodworking  Рік тому +2

      Hey! I flip the boards for both speed and safety. By flipping half through the rip I keep my hands away from the blade and I dont have to walk around to get the piece to re-run or stack.

    • @melodywilson5255
      @melodywilson5255 Рік тому

      @MatthewPeechWoodworking I've done that for longer cuts because I don't have an outfeed table. So do you have to turn the saw off, or just flip and keep going? Those clips are usually sped up so I can't tell. Thanks Matt!!

  • @athomewithrobandtim
    @athomewithrobandtim Рік тому +3

    This one is tough. I mean, all 3 are winning designs! If I consider each of these as squirrel feeders as presented, then my vote goes for the Adirondack chair design with a modification of the corn cob screw location to be on the chair. My decision is based upon placement of the feeders and squirrels seem to prefer to eat high off the ground and more out of site of predators. However, if I consider these designs for creative uses, the Adirondack chair comes in last place because of the attached platform. It looks like it is required for stability. My winner for most uses other than as a squirrel feeder is the picnic table. Now, as a gardener, my personal favorite is the swing. I’d remove the screw and secure a small terracotta pot or two and fill with a fern and a vine. I may need to make the build a little larger or at least slightly longer. My decisions are from the customer’s perspective rather than the seller’s perspective which considers costs and profit. I can’t remember which one was able to get two projects from 1 picket or which one had the best profit margin, etc. I’m just very impressed with all of the final presentations. ~ Rob

    You know, I, like you,🤔 priced out what it would cost me to purchase the material and fasters required to make a popular, far more practical version of the Adirondack style furniture.🧐 I came to the conclusion, rather quickly that I wouldn't initially be making more than a 20%{at best!} on my investment in just the material. 🤨My labor, in comparison to what I earn at my day/night job, would essentially be free😕. 95% of People can't see past the shine🤓. At least 50% of them would happily pay the exact same amount for a job has deep 80grit sand scratches in it, so long as it's pretty at arm's length🤓. There's no way I can complete with chairs made in a country that pays pennies per day. Obviously, those $79.00 (wonder what country)chairs are only for this season and not for the 10yr life span I'd build my chairs for and that's where totally dropped the idea.😡 Plus I saw those chairs being unloaded at house I couldn't afford to buy, and reasoned, (if they're gonna settle for that crap, what chance does my stuff stand.?) 🥺 And plus, the house across the street from the one that bought 10 cheapies Adirondack chairs had the way more expensive version that has already been through a season or 2 and still looked good.(Yes, there's one born every minute, and they tend have to learn the hard way. I want to start this year, not wait until next year...)
    That was 6mos ago, when I'd have started production of the chairs, and being an older/middle aged fellow, don't have quite the energy, room and time to produce large projects and have any space for the small stuff that keeps this side hustle moving forward and gradually upwards.🤔🤠😎 3:52

    I keep saying and repeating myself, I don’t know where do you live and it has to be a good area where to sell them for 40 dollars. In my area in Ohio people barely want to pay 10 dollars, I need to move where there’s more money . Early spring I saw alot of the planters in the market then it went away , people don’t buy around here .

      I’d say $40 would be on the high side but my kids sold a less refined version of the picnic tables for $20 alllll day long. They sold like crazy.

But I might try this small projects .

    I like them all but I would say the chair is my favorite. Have several of your plans Mathew and love them. Already been selling planter boxes, garden baskets and trellis. Even made your garden arbor out of pressure treated lumber and sold it. Gonna add the chair to my projects. Thanks for all you do!

    I made a walnut slab coffee table with no metal...handmade ....52 long 25-18-33 width 18 high.....sterilized stabilized and finished with baby oil....ill take 4,800 for it....made it in two days......also it has epoxy c-channel inlay and artistically texturized where the reclaimed wood was damaged....beautiful table😊..........also crotch figure to die for😊. Also the four legs were mortise and tennoned 1inch deep and epoxied into the 1.5 inch thick slab.....legs are 2x3 inch thick 16.5 inches tall and solid as a rock😅

    These are all cool. I do love the squirrel swing, a great creative build. However, I don't think the squirrels would enjoy the movement too much. Love the Adirondack chair, especially with the screw or bucket option. This was too close to call. 😂

    i dont think your math was right on those profit margins. you had around 100% (90 something). if you spend $2.50 on the matls, then selling for $5 would be 100%. i think you missed a decimal, and its closer to 1,000% profit.

    Watching these videos drives me nuts. The word Profit is something that is being misused extensively on UA-cam. A man is compensated for his labour, and there is no profit as he just gets compensated better on some projects than others. Profit on the other hand is a business or merchant term. There is no labour or value added, just a mark up on the product they bought and are reselling for a profit. The point I am trying to make is that if operating correctly a man's labour is not taxable, but all merchant or business profit or income is taxable. It really comes down to understanding how to operate in this world or multiple jurisdictions.

    My vote goes to the picnic table. Fewest cuts and fastest/easiest assembly. And considering you can get 2 from 1 pence picket, best bang for the buck IMHO. Quick, easy way to make $40-$50 from a single $3 piece of material. Also, adirondack chairs tend to be regional (I'm not knocking them, that's what I make/sell). But everybody everywhere likes a good picnic table (which I also make/sell🤣...for that very reason)
