I live in New Zealand and major species that are having an impact on the environment are mustelids (Ferrets, stoats and weasel). These three species are another major contribution to the extinction of endemic bird species of New Zealand
@@theflyingdutchguy9870 Yeap that's correct. I'm trying to get into conservation I'm New Zealand. Almost completed my degree and have done volunteering up North. Its was ashame stoats weasel and ferrets were not mentioned in this video. To me that is a big miss in people the UA-cam community aware of the destruction mustlieds have here because in the U.K they are protected because they are native. Ecological role is important to retaining sustainability in biodiversity. Mosquitoe fish are becoming very abundant here too. Carp populations are becoming isolated. More abundant in Hamilton and Waikato. We have the Asian catfish and I've seen one huge specimen in Auckland at Western Springs. I couldn't get a photo so there are still none official reports in Auckland but they are more abundant than predicted. I agree with you on the rats. I'm happy to share a species list with the youtuber here. Sorry I forgot username.
As a Kiwi who recommends your videos to my customers (I work at a local pet shop as a fish specialist) it's so lovely to see a video about some of the dangers our native wildlife face and knowing that some of my customers will also see it.
Me to my cat: you're a cute little ecological disaster aren't you? My cat: I yearn for the flesh of the innocent, feed me human Me: I love you too little guy
I've had three cats in my lifetime. My last cat, Smudge, lived a really good life - he got to be 20 years old - but even in his later years, he was a surprisingly good hunter. I love cats, but I am aware of how capable they are.
Glad you're back! I took invasion ecology in my undergrad, it's my favorite sub-discipline. These videos are great and I often learn about invasive species I hadn't heard of. It's also VERY interesting to learn about invasion ecology in different areas of the world! I hope you continue the invasive species videos for other countries/regions.
Love Rudd, my Grandad used to have one in his pond and it was always the first to get the food. Also, glad you managed to get the issues resolved fairly promptly with YT too. :)
So glad your back. Your channel along with many others has encouraged me to get a bachelor's degree in marine biology. Keep up the great work. Much love.
@Tsuki thanks so much for making this being a New Zealand Resitdent myself its cool to no that you chose our country. I would love to do a video with you about the Native fish as I can get a lot of footage for you and have a channel myself so I could edit it too please reply if your interested. And again really cool video 👍👍👍👍
So glad you are back so quickly! Your channel has slowly become one of my regular watches, and watched a good amount of your back videos. I particularly like these, and the biome videos. Again, glad you are back and putting out new content!
As per usual EXCELLENT VIDEO!!!! I've ALWAYS WANTED TO VISIT new Zealand!!! Gorgeous 🥰 country!!!! Amazing history..... AND INCREDIBLE WILDLIFE! a shame about the invasive species.....
They really are he flightless bird they're called... I once saw this amazing documentary narrated by Sir Richard Attenborough on BBC it was awesome you need to check it out it's pretty cool they're really beautiful birds!!!!
As someone who lives in NZ, the main 5 would be rats, possums, ferrets, stoats and weasels, as they all kill native NZ birds. There are heaps of other invasive animals but they don't do much damage, the NZ government is just really cautious. Also cats.
@Tsuki Thanks for the video and link to the kakapo recovery programe DOC do great work! Soo i made a small donation. I have never seen a Kakapo but have seen a Kiwi in the Rotorua sanctuary it was very dark in the room as the tour was guided through it i put my hand over the guard rail with a sinny coin i had gotten as a souvenir and it flckered in the dim light , suddenly one of the Kiwi bird dashes up quickly and very close to my hand to see what was flickering it was great that little Kiwi was soo close! something i will never forget!
A cool thing about NZ is that, several years after the Polenesiions first settled there, they recognized that they were hunting birds to extinction. Long before Europeans settled there, the Polynesians were already trying to save animals from disappearing.
Great to see you back! I have a suggestion for you, if you'd like. I think it might be cool to examine which freshwater fish would thrive in a saltwater setting (theoretically, obviously), and which saltwater fish might be most suited to take over freshwater environments. For example, how might a school of giant groupers fare in the Great Lakes of the US.
I did the Queen Charlotte track near Picton and the second morning as I was heading out, I came across a possum with its leg stuck in a trap, alive, staring at me. I set down my pack, found a large stick nearby(about as big as my calf muscle) and said "sorry buddy" and crushed the little guys skull; it didn't even really twitch. I picked up my pack and kept going. Very beautiful hike.
new Zealand is my favorite island because of his weird birds, primitive forests and his beautiful landscapes i mean islands because there are more than one
What were the native species of fish you showing images of? Look like they could be lovely temperate temp fish. The way to save is to captive breed and re populate systems
If people would keep their cats indoors then they wouldn't pose a threat to birds and other creatures. I have 8 cats who never go outside. It's safer for the cats because they get preyed upon by other creatures, too.
I absolutely agree with you. If you keep an "outside cat" you don't have a pet. What you have is an invasive, destructive animal that you feed, and sort of care for, enabling their destructive behaviors to continue. They are nuisances to your neighbors, and will haunt bird their feeders for prey. I, too, have always had cats, but never have allowed them free range outdoors alone. Outside in my fenced garden, yes. But, NEVER alone, and able to leave my presence. I like animals too much to ever allow my cats to have access to kill and maim them for their amusement.
I never let my boy outside but my neighbors cat is an outdoor cat and she's so sweet I'm always worried for her. But in north America cats are more hunted than hunters
If you ever made a video about Australian invasive species, that video would be over an hour long because there are just so many no native animals in Australia.
When will we see Invasive Species : Australia They have one of the worst invasive species in the Cane Toad which has had a serious effect on wildflife in Northern Territory, and northern parts of Queensland
Professional wildlife biologists the world over know how much harm to the small, native animals feral and even temporarily released cats do. They can’t say anything because of fear for their jobs!
Koi are not just similar to common carp... They are the exact same species. Cyprinus Carpio.... At the most you maybe can speak of a variation. But that is debatable in taxonomie terms of is not even a sub species....
This is why my cat doesn't go outside and the closest she gets to the outdoors is an enclosed patio that she goes and sunbathes in. Only things she likes to hunt is bugs 😂😂😂.
Well I saw a while back what they do in Australia with the feral cats. Their way is probably the only way to handle that problem. In the U.S. all pet owners ( breeders it’s different) are supposed to neuter and Spay their cats or dogs at a certain point for reasons said above for example. Also, wild feral cats who aren’t euthanized by animal control here will get spayed and neutered then released back into the environment.
With all these flightless birds on the island, I am surprised no bird evolved to mirror the Terror Birds of South America. Seems like it's an open niche to exploit.
Nobody in this world seems to understand how much damage the common house cat does to the enviroment. They kill and hunt just for fun! I'm from the UK too, so do one on where I live now in Japan, or the country of my mother's birth, Jamaica....Oooh the mongoose!
No one will listen to me, but my educated solution is to introduce wedge-tailed eagles to replace the extinct Eyles's harrier. It died out because humans exterminated its prey, but New Zealand now has medium-sized animals for large birds of prey to hunt again. This is the best land solution in my opinion.
We suppose to be responsible, especially when it comes to cats. I try to keep ours cats inside and do a good job at it. You really aren't supposed to let cats outside for their own safety as well as that of birds and other animals. The outside world is dangerous to the cats as well.
You say it like it is and it's very sad. I live in a country with 4000 wolves, 30 years ago not one...And our government is so happy about this animal. The hunt and the live stock keeping in some good areas is broken down completely. The People of New Zealand fight against millons and we against a fistful of idi'ts.😅😅Like your channel, God's Blessings from Northern Germany Ludwig.

I was going to say the same thing why wernt mustelids mentioned?
MustardLids don't even really exist and stuff. I don't speaks the zoolander. Languages. Language.
Can you guys legally hunt any of these invasive species without any restrictions such as uses of firearms or archery equipment

The kakapo is also my favourite animal. Great video, it‘s allways very interesting listening to your commentary
The perch is also another invasive fish here in NZ but luckily they're only confined to a few lakes and rivers.
Me to my cat: you're a cute little ecological disaster aren't you?
My cat: I yearn for the flesh of the innocent, feed me human
Me: I love you too little guy
That exactly how it is with my vicious bobcat, he only gets love and affection after he's feasted on the flesh of his victims.

It is to late for that unfortunately there is already feral cats
I only keep outdoor cats, keeping an animal indoors 24/7 would just drive them crazy. If you aren’t able to provide for your pet, don’t get one.
