I am African American and I grew up in Miami. I used to see Cubans and whites landing great jobs but all I saw for my people was struggle in low-wage jobs. Though I had a masters degree and graduated at the top of my class from a state university, I could not find livable wage jobs in South Florida as a whole, and Miami specifically. It’s just sad. I had to move to the Midwest in order to live the upper middle-class life that I worked for. I will never live in South Florida again with a local job. Those jobs are typically for Cubans, not for me. Miami is technically a different country, when compared to the rest of the US. I will bring a remote job from a traditionally American part of the country though. I have a lot of respect for Cubans and the opportunities that they have created for themselves and their children, it’s admirable. I just wish that the black community down there worked better with each other to create opportunities for black people too, via starting new ethical businesses, etc.
Cubans wont be in power too long, too many have sold out to kiss up to the man. We are hard working, and I am in the mindset its not just cubans were ALL like that. They ran me out of Alabama for being hispanic, so know it goes 360. we live in a messed up world for sure man. I wish you could come back and make millions but sadly when cubans go 100 miles north of South Florida.. we get dealt that same card. I literally had to flee Alabama for being Cuban. so its not just one or another were all SADLY the same in this nasty world. I dont think all cubans are like that. Miami Cubans are not always the most enlightened folks.. they THINK they are american.. move to Alabama as a cuban and find out how american you really are. they have bought a ticket for a bus they cant ride.

I kind of feel the Cuban people of Miami and Broward County are a lot different from the Cubans who live elsewhere in Florida or elsewhere in the United States
Miami had a black city manager once, he tried leveling the plain field for African American but was ran out of politics. It's very unfair that someone with your education could not find a job in your city.
I am of Haitian/Barbadian decent and get along well with specifically Cubans here in Miami-Dade. If you have a hustle in you and are respectful , color doesn’t matter down here. For the FBA Black community, less marriage means less homeownership, and means less wealth
Little Haiti is facing gentrification and the crime rate is out of control. While traditionalism is still held in high regard in the Caribbean community, there is still an issue with out of wedlock children & lack of 2 parent households. How is that any different than what’s going on in the FBA community? While I agree that having a hustle & being respectful is key & 2 parent homes lead to wealth & it’s an issue with Black Americans, it’s absolutely disingenuous and dangerous to claim “color doesn’t matter” in Miami, FL (apart of the United States) & ignore the similarities in the Caribbean community as well. Meanwhile, Black Cubans and other Black Latinos face discrimination in Cuba and other Latin American countries & within the culture (colorism is a BIG issue) so trying to insinuate this is a lone issue the FBA community faces due to “lack of marriages” & “race doesn’t matter” is untruthful. I would never tell people to walk around afraid and paranoid, but I also would never tell people “race doesn’t matter”. Miami Beach is separate but even that place is a whole ‘nother tale of how it does show its face. Lastly, you do realize that a lot of who people see as “FBA” people from Miami are 4th, 3rd, 2nd generation Caribbeans, correct? A lot of folks are descended from the Bahamas.
I have a huge problem with these racial dot maps for so many reasons, but I particularly don't like their use because they imply that Hispanic is a race when we know that it's multi-racial. Hispanic is not a race; it's a term that oversimplifies a group of cultures that have both similarities and differences among them, but all with Spanish as their dominant language. At its core definition, it also excludes Brazilians since they are not Spanish speakers. As a MiamiDade resident, it's very obvious that many of it Hispanic and Latino residents are also White. If you look at the Census data for 2020, more than 79% of the county is listed as White, but only 13.6% of the total identify as White alone (meaning not Hispanic or Latino). In the end, I get that folks like to use data and maps to understand the world around them, but you are spot on that many of the presumptions around that data can't necessarily be applied to Miami-Dade. It simply operates differently than any other city I've lived in across the country.
I love Miami. I go there as much as I can. I wish I could live there but there are two things that prevent me from living there. 1- low wages particularly in my field (I'm in education) and the traffic. I just can't. I live in central Jersey, I am 12-13 mins to work and as a teacher my salary is not bad.
It use to be a lot of southern white ppl living in Miami. When the Cubans moved to Miami in the 60s white southerners left moved north to Central or North Florida so they don't have to be around the Cubans. Funny how white ppl leave when they don't want to be around a certain group of ppl. Even though Cubans consider themselves white they arnt the right white ppl to satisfy southern whites
Miami=is where I met my beautiful wife. She's Colombian/Nicaraguan descent, speaks perfect English and Spanish. I call her "Sweet Angie of Miami". She's got great values, good upbringing. I met her while I was working "remotely" out of New York. I never left ever since I stepped foot in Miami.
That's the problem with Miami 90% or more are from somewhere else no matter what race or backgrounds they use and abuse the city. loyalty is for somewhere else and they treat the city like a dish rag it's a tourist town and everybody even the ones that live here treated as such

The only thing that took me by surprise when I moved and still does to this day is the racial friction between latin people. I went to the high school that you probably passed by on 152nd St. in Richmond Heights. It’s a very interesting neighborhood because even though it is predominantly black, still has a diverse minorities in it, and doesn’t fall in the category of a “hood”. It has two very good high schools too. The area around Florida International University is a mix between commercial stroads and suburbs. Mostly locals commute to FIU. UM has mostly out of state students.
Miami is a divided city that's for sure. If you think about it, the Miami River is what divides the North section with the South section of the city. It appears that EVERYTHING is divided amongst that river (race/ethnicity, income, education, etc.). It is literally a great divide.
The Cuban Community isn't mostly white. The majority of the first wave of Cubans were lighter complected. Cubans are a muti racial community. We ran e from black to Asian and white. There are mixes of people. There are tons of Black Cubans.

Jose I am Miami born and raised and I will promise you I have never felt "attached" to the place or like it in any way. I was born in the wrong place. Once I left the place I decided that I really didn't like it because I saw how awful and screwed up Miami really is. It has terrible race relations, awful crime, bad public corruption, water pollution, police abuse and very rude people. Other cities/states may have their problems but I can promise you not too many places are bad like Miami unless we're talking about Detroit or Memphis.

We all need to share and care about each other. And Miami, it is just an interesting place to visit. The real estate prices are elevated but a lot of the properties are not quality. For example, an apartment will rent for about 2,000 per month but the apt looks like a motel room. You do not get what you pay for. The food is unique in Miami too. Something you would need time to get use to if you moved there. The weather is unpredictable. 😑 For me, Miami is just a place to visit but not to live. Too much drama in - Miami. A different world from where I come from.

MIAMI and SFL in general should find its own identity, I feel like this is the core of alot of problems, the problems when it comes to race relations aren't that there's alot of different people from different areas, but that all those different people have different Identities, if everyone in MIAMI and SFL called themselves Sfloridians instead of "cuban american" or "black Americans" or "white American" people would find atleast one way to feel connected even if they look differently, that happens in alot of South American countries where people don't seperate each other by race, they all see each other as one nation, when we seperate each other like this we are following the system impossed on not just the USA but the whole continents (South America and North America). We know that there is still much to do but in 1959 Miami was a sleepy town mostly inhabited by retired people and thanks to the arrival of mostly Cubans and the contribution of other communities Miami has become a megalopolis of great global importance and it is the de facto the capital of Latin America in the United States. Here in Miami Metropolitan Area,There are a lotta hoods Feom as far south as Homestate and as far North as Riviera Beach.

Jose I am Miami born and raised and I will promise you I have never felt "attached" to the place or like it in any way. I was born in the wrong place. Once I left the place I decided that I really didn't like it because I saw how awful and screwed up Miami really is. It has terrible race relations, awful crime, bad public corruption, water pollution, police abuse and very rude people. Other cities/states may have their problems but I can promise you not too many places are bad like Miami unless we're talking about Detroit or Memphis.
BRO, after living in Alabama I would rather be homeless in Miami. Its not perfect out here but its better. Well, as a Hispanics its amazing but i can see why blacks leave. we live in a messed up world.

The real estate prices are elevated but a lot of the properties are not quality.
For example, an apartment will rent for about 2,000 per month but the apt looks like a motel room. You do not get what you pay for. The food is unique in Miami too. Something you would need time to get use to if you moved there. The weather is unpredictable. 😑
For me, Miami is just a place to visit but not to live. Too much drama in - Miami. A different world from where I come from.

MIAMI and SFL in general should find its own identity, I feel like this is the core of alot of problems, the problems when it comes to race relations aren't that there's alot of different people from different areas, but that all those different people have different Identities, if everyone in MIAMI and SFL called themselves Sfloridians instead of "cuban american" or "black Americans" or "white American" people would find atleast one way to feel connected even if they look differently, that happens in alot of South American countries where people don't seperate each other by race, they all see each other as one nation, when we seperate each other like this we are following the system impossed on not just the USA but the whole continents (South America and North America). The problem is all the hard headed American wannabe cubans that kiss the feet of the white elite. If we can overcome those problems we can lead the nation when it comes to improving race relations.

... There are many inaccuracies and errors in the video and it does not speak of the great achievements of the community compared to other parts of the country. We know that there is still much to do but in 1959 Miami was a sleepy town mostly inhabited by retired people and thanks to the arrival of mostly Cubans and the contribution of other communities Miami has become a megalopolis of great global importance and it is the de facto the capital of Latin America in the United States. Miami is our pride and I wouldn't change it for anything ... !!! ... Peace and Love to y'all .. !!!
