I’m a full time M1 iPad Pro user. And with my Kensington StudioDock and a 32” 4K monitor I am SO HAPPY. I’m an accountant who travels a lot and my iPad Pro is powerful enough to work and unbeatably mobile. Well done Apple.
I honestly refuse to believe the 2018/2020 iPad Pro's can't support this considering the A12Z was what was driving the initial Apple Silicon Transition Dev Kit. Like you're telling me it can handle macOS but not iPadOS???
I guess the main issue is RAM as external monitor use requires Stage Manager and thus has to support 8 open apps simultaneously which might cause problems in edge cases on iOS devices with low amounts of memory. I think it’s highly likely there wouldn’t be a problem if you could use external monitors without stage manager or a “monitor only mode”/clamshell mode with stage manager. There’s pretty much only UX reasons why they don’t want to implement something like this, I’m pretty sure Craig Federighi pretty much outright stated so.

I am still dissapointed that the 2020 ipad Pros can't run external monitors. However I will say the ability to have the audio now play on the connected monitor or TV without having to use bluetooth speakers is appreciated. I was suprised by this when I plugged my ipad pro into my TV last week and it's a welcomed improvement. However, can't say enough how disappointing it is that the 2018 and 2020 ipad pros can't have true external monitor support.

It would be so nice if you would make a step-by-step video. Easy explained, like: "First, buy this or this; then, connect this here" and so on... Like normal people talk.
What I think this enables for many folks is the ability to shift to an iPad exclusively for personal use. I have a Thunderbolt Windows laptop that I use for work, and a docking station that I use with it. At the end of the day if I need to type up personal documents, I can now just unplug my work laptop, plug in my iPad, and have a big screen and nice keyboard for those personal items. The versatility of being able to use the same station for your work device and your personal device is going to be really nice. Thanks for the explainer for audio output devices, I hadn't understood that, but is there a similar option for audio in?
Yeah the audio in device is just the last connected device plugged in or paired. So if it isn’t what you want you have to either unplug it or power it off and then reconnect it.

My monitor doesn’t even see my m1 iPad Pro (iOS 16.2) :(. I’ve plugged the monitor into an HDMI adapter which plugs into the usb c port of my ipad, but the monitor stays black (doesn’t detect any input). I know that there’s nothing wrong with either cables as it works on my MacBook Pro connecting via USB C
The speakers issue is just beyond me. I tried this for the first time today using a monitor that didn't have speakers. Went to change the audio source to a homepod and it said it's not allowed and there is no option to use the iPad speakers. I just dont get how something so simple is overlooked.
The Homepod thing is annoying. It works fine if the source is just audio. It’s when you throw in video it gets weirded out. I gave up playing video audio to HomePods a long time ago because there was a delay. I just use them for music/podcasts.
Normally I use the HomePods every time as audio output with and without video. No problems at all, even no sync issues. But I`m really shocked that I can’t connect to the HomePods at all when using a external Monitor. Not even for audio without video. When I try I get the message „AirPlay ist not supported while external Monitor ist connected.“ That’s really not okay. Also I can’t think of a reason why this is the case.
I get this same message that HomePods are not supported when connected to an external monitor. On another issue, I noticed that your side tray on the left shows 5 app sets open. I have a 32-inch monitor, and I’m able to open 5 sets of apps as well on the external monitor; it was supposed to just allow 4, I thought.
I have a 32:9 monitor, and I’ve only been able to get it to give me a 16:9 picture on my external display. Hopefully we can have more resolutions/aspect ratios supported with a later update-I had seen videos of people during the 16.0 beta period of people using a 21:9 monitor with it. The picture quality is markedly better over Thunderbolt than over HDMI, but that’s the same as it was when mirroring before.
Great review, thanks. How do video calls work (Zoom, FaceTime etc.)? That is, can you use the external monitors webcam or another external webcam? Or does one still have to use the iPad camera for video conference / calls?
Can do a video the minute that iPad has control over the audio when using hdmi (I noticed it even did it using the serial port) if iOS is updated please. I’ve selected the bell notification

Can I use extended view on my monitor with my pdf sheets open while I solve problem exercises with the Pencil on the ipad laying on my desk (in other words, can I use extended view to browse files and the web while using it as a notebook for notetaking?)
External support is incredibly frustrating. It doesn’t display in the correct ratio with on my Samsung 34” monitor. Changed hdmi cables and even bought the Apple adapter to see if there was anything I was doing wrong. I think they should specify that this external display support is only available on very, very specific monitors!
Thanks for the Stage Mgr., info. I have an older monitor Dynex brand actually. I connect my M1 iPad Pro to the Dynex but nothing happens on the Dynex monitor. I am using a Zagg keyboard case for my M1 iPad Pro so I have the keyboard. I am seeing the little blue icon on the top right of my M1 iPad Pro so it is recognizing the plugin to the external monitor. I do have a Bluetooth mouse -would it need to be paired with the Dynex monitor for my setup to work? Many thanks in advance for any tips you can offer.
Apologies if this is answered already somewhere - but wanted to ask anyway since I might be getting a studio display to use with my M1 iPad Pro. When I lock the iPad, my current external display (LG 27UN850-W) will stay on with a black screen. I have to unplug my iPad for the monitor to go into standby, which is a problem because it’s also the way I charge my iPad. While I like that monitor, I wish I had better built in support with the iPad. Does the Studio Display address this at all? Does the screen turn off? I also have some USB speakers I use with it - Pebble V3. These are okay, but how are the built in speakers?
I have the exact same issue with my Samsung ultra wide. I have to manually turn the display off. Let me know if you get an answer. I’ve googled forever trying to find an answer.

Will the external monitor work with the a13 chip of the apple ipad 2021? How do I connect the ipad and monitor together ? What type of cable exactly it called?
Hugely excited, and watched this on an external display to celebrate. Also looking forward to seeing what happens with games- the extra screen space could do some cool things.

Hello, I have two questions: Does the battery last less using the iPad in this way? if so how long does it last? and the other question is if you can use the external monitor with the ipad turned off. Thank you and sorry for my English level
For your first question, all I can say is it does drain the battery (how long does it last? I cannot say, because I am always charging my iPad while using the external monitor, because the magic keyboard allows you to charge the iPad through the keyboard itself). But for your second question, there is a work around. Check my channel to find out how (its in my latest videos, and shorts, and you just need 40 seconds to find a workaround).
@@iPadChannel hello bro, a question unlike the iphone using the ipad charging doesn't harm the battery? I'm interested in buying the ipad pro to use it as the only laptop instead of the mac, but the battery is my big fear
@@franmottola_ Im not really an expert when it comes to battery life, but with my iPad 7 that I bought in 2020, I used it as my only computer for two years, and edited 67 videos and recorded over 100 songs with my guitar in addition to doing other things to help me with my daytime job (using reminders, photo editing, etc). When Im at the office (from 7am to 4pm) I do not charge my iPad. But when at home (or when I get home from work), here's what I do: if the battery falls below 50%, I charge and use the iPad while it is being charged. For example, I want to watch a movie or edit video when I get home, if the battery is already 50% or less, I charge the iPad while I use it. Then I will keep the iPad charging until it gets 100%. When the battery is full, but I still need to use the iPad, I still keep it charged even if it is already at 100%. Once Im finished using the iPad, then thats the only time I disconnect the charger. I've done this method for over 2 years, and the battery endurance of the iPad 7 is still great. With my new iPad Air 5, Im still doing the same. I recommend that you search on videos about maintaining battery health because there is a technical explanation on how to keep your rechargeable batteries last longer.
Very interesting video and thanks for showing how it works. However, you mentioned that you can easily unplug just one cable and switch from iPad to MacBook: I was wondering, why would I use iPad at all if I have a MacBook? I do use my iPad on the go, but at home I always plug in my laptop just because it is as easy to have on the desk and it is definitely more powerful.
I have a similar setup, I am using a 4k Samsung 42" TV, and it works great. But I can't figure out how to increase text size on the windows they look tiny and can't change the size. Any recommendations?
I actually cannot get it to work properly. I have a 34” curved Philips display and when I connect it to the monitor it does the same as before. I do have and use the smart keyboard cinnected. I have the 2021 Ipad pro cellular
Hi does your external monitor go to sleep once the ipad is turned off? I have an asus rog monitor attached and it never fully goes to sleep and the backlit appears to be on. Wonder if there are any workarounds for this.
I have camera rotation problem When using the Zoom or Teams app, my camera rotates so I appear sideways when I move between the iPad and external display
Is it okay to keep the iPad plugged in to the charger all the time while working or does it damage the battery? I was waiting though for a different sentence, perhaps we won’t be needing the mac
It’s a photo I recently. Those wallpaper packs are from previous years and before I took this photo. It’ll be in my next pack. I need a few more photos before I release that one.
Hey Chris! Been watching your videos for a year now and these iPad tips are very helpful and helped me work around my M1. Just a question regarding the external monitor mode, does it affects your iPad’s battery? Is there a difference or battery drain when you are using your external monitor compared when you are not using it?
Thank you for the video! Does Anyone knwo if you can turn off the mirroring as standard? If I reconnect my dock the Ipad always launches the monitor in mirror mode and I have to manually put it off in the settings and arrange the screens every time.
Very informative vid. I bought m1 mb air and my current monitor can’t scale it properly. So I should find some alternative to Apple Studio Monitor because it is pricey.
So I have been using this for about a week now (Beta). Has some glitches, but for sure heading in the right direction. The one thing that is super frustrating to me is that my HomePod cannot play sound. It says that it will not work on in “Extended Display”. However, I can play Music, Podcast, etc. Just not UA-cam 🤷♂️. All in all……Game Changer 💯 Thanks for your Content!
@@ChrisLawley True! So…..I found a work around ☺️ Unplug your Hub totally from iPad. Open up UA-cam on iPad and play….choose the HomePod, then, plug it back in and let it extend display, viola!!! Hope that helps 👍🏼
Great video I was watching the part where you said you want to be able to close the iPad with the keyboard and just use the display connected. This is already available if you turn on in settings always on display like it doesn’t fall asleep then you can just close the case but the iPad will still be turned on. If you do this then you can just use the monitor as the main one or set up in settings to where the monitor is mirroring the iPad completely and you can use it just like that in clam shell way whatever way you say clam shell.
Just realized that you can’t mirror the display and use the second display as the main one but you can just in settings under display and brightness turn off lock/unlock so that when you close the lid it stays on the display.
Thanks for the great video! A question: i can’t change resize the app windows on the external monitor, anyone knows the reason? All app comes with same size.
Thanks for the video Christopher. I’m thinking of getting back into the iPad. Would you recommend 16 GB of RAM on the iPad Pro? Would more RAM make any difference when it comes to external screen support?

Any recommendations?
does this work with any monitor aspect ratio? or can we use ultrawides?
Wow you just reminded me today 16.2 came out. Downloading now!!!!!!!!!!!!
I actually cannot get it to work properly. I have a 34” curved Philips display and when I connect it to the monitor it does the same as before. I do have and use the smart keyboard cinnected. I have the 2021 Ipad pro cellular
can I use an external TOUCHSCREEN monitor?
yes !
i can finally do this now that i downloaded iPadOs 16.2 but i'm wondering, is this also possible with the ipad screen off ?
Hi does your external monitor go to sleep once the ipad is turned off? I have an asus rog monitor attached and it never fully goes to sleep and the backlit appears to be on. Wonder if there are any workarounds for this.
Does it work with iPad Air 5th Gen M1?
I love that the iPad acting just as a display needs an M1 when sidecar was working with much less.
What connectivity do I need to connect to a pc monitor between the iPad and the Samsung monitor?
I hope next update, ipad have a off screen in a monitor. For minimal use batery
I’m still using 2018 Ipad pro
I have camera rotation problem When using the Zoom or Teams app, my camera rotates so I appear sideways when I move between the iPad and external display
Can you use external monitor support on an M1 iMac?
Is it okay to keep the iPad plugged in to the charger all the time while working or does it damage the battery? I was waiting though for a different sentence, perhaps we won’t be needing the mac
Was this IPad Pro 12.9 pls
does bypass the battery when connected to a monitor?
Hey @Cristopher,
I bought your wallpaper pack, but this wallpaper is not in the pack. Can you fix this?
It’s a photo I recently. Those wallpaper packs are from previous years and before I took this photo. It’ll be in my next pack. I need a few more photos before I release that one.
Can you game on the external display?
Bit of a shame that 4th gen iPad Pro can’t do this
Will this come to the iPad mini 6?
Highly doubtful
Hey Chris! Been watching your videos for a year now and these iPad tips are very helpful and helped me work around my M1. Just a question regarding the external monitor mode, does it affects your iPad’s battery? Is there a difference or battery drain when you are using your external monitor compared when you are not using it?
Follow up answer to my question, I tried it and, yes, it indeed made my battery drain faster.
Sharing screen on Discord can my friend watch me from an external screen ?
Thank you for the video! Does Anyone knwo if you can turn off the mirroring as standard? If I reconnect my dock the Ipad always launches the monitor in mirror mode and I have to manually put it off in the settings and arrange the screens every time.
60fps?
Very informative vid. I bought m1 mb air and my current monitor can’t scale it properly. So I should find some alternative to Apple Studio Monitor because it is pricey.
So I have been using this for about a week now (Beta). Has some glitches, but for sure heading in the right direction. The one thing that is super frustrating to me is that my HomePod cannot play sound. It says that it will not work on in “Extended Display”. However, I can play Music, Podcast, etc. Just not UA-cam 🤷♂️. All in all……Game Changer 💯 Thanks for your Content!
Yeah that’s annoying. I just use mine for podcast and music because there has been Bluetooth delay issues with video in the past.
@@ChrisLawley True! So…..I found a work around ☺️ Unplug your Hub totally from iPad. Open up UA-cam on iPad and play….choose the HomePod, then, plug it back in and let it extend display, viola!!! Hope that helps 👍🏼
That’s too much of a hassle. I’ll file some feedback tomorrow on this.
How can i adjust the brightness of the monitor ? I have the monitor settings on 0 brightness but its still too bright 😅
to bad i only got the 2018 ipad pro :(
I use a 24 inch Smart TV as an external display. This has provided an adequately decent audio output for me.
Thanks for sharing. This is a nice feature. Blessings on your day!
Neither do I, I don’t know the reason
This is has been part of iPad for a long time now
Thanks for the video Christopher. I’m thinking of getting back into the iPad. Would you recommend 16 GB of RAM on the iPad Pro? Would more RAM make any difference when it comes to external screen support?
Only if you are using heavy creative apps like Procreate or DaVinci Resolve. RAM won’t make a difference for external screen support.
@@ChrisLawley Thanks, that's helpful. My use case is more lightweight - productivity apps like Word, email, and zoom meetings. Might also try using the iPad for client Keynote/Figma presentations. Sounds like 8GB RAM should suffice... Great content btw, keep it coming.
Downloading 16.2 as I type. Can't wait! Thanks for the video Chris! 👍🙏
That’s awesome!
Anyone else having issues with notetaking apps such as goodnotes, notability etc? When I open the app on the iPad it is mirrored to the external monitor. So frustrating. Is there any way I can fix this?
Now only if they could get the screen mirroring to ipad from macbook working consistently!
Waiting for your DaVinci resolve iPad video
I’m still learning it but as soon as I figure it all out I’ll make a video!
