Even though the XSE version of this Toyota SUV doesn’t have more power than the rest, it can feel sportier and more fun. You probably won’t carve up any corners, but you can feel a little more aggressive with the upgraded suspension, exterior elements, and when you add the AWD system. If you want an SUV with more comfort and less sportiness, check out the higher trims of the 2023 Toyota Highlander.

The 22 Highlander got 22 mpg combined - ( 21-29) with a V6. Gas mileage is basically the same. A turbo may on the books get that, but when you stress a turbo it eats gas way more than a V6. I had a turbo 4 in an Acura. It was supposed to get 21 combined , I got less than 18 and I am light on the foot. I bet after all your fast accelerations your mpg probably dropped to 18 or less too.

Another great review! Having owned a couple of turbocharged vehicles, I think Toyota is screwing the pooch on this one. One reason consumers loved that V6 was Reliability and you don’t get anywhere near the reliability with a turbo engine vs a naturally aspirated one long term. For those people that like to keep their vehicles a long time, they need to have a non turbo option. I never could stand the turbo lag either. So Toyota switching to the turbo engines is a big mistake. Same for the new Tundra. I would have bought one if it had a V8 option. Main reason I just bought a 2023 Lexus GX460 for my wife was the silky smooth V8 and a 6500lb tow rating.

The GX has that tried and true V8 and from everything I could find about it seems to suggest that it’s one of the most reliable vehicles in the world. It is a little thirsty though. If you don’t plan on keeping a vehicle for 100k plus miles, a turbo engine car or truck is fine. Definitely wouldn’t want to buy a used one without a long term warranty.

And with each application it turns grey even faster again. I like the highlander but just how many 4 cylinder turbos will last 250,000 miles? Perhaps all of them? None of them? Just the turbo 4 with electric motors. 265 hp 310 lbft torque from 2.4L I4 Turbo and 45 hp 90 lbft torque from the electric motor. 310hp and 400 lbft torque using a properly tuned 8 speed auto. 0-60 would be in 4-5 sec range. They can also just use the hybrid powertrain and replace the e-cvt with the 8 speed, beef up the electric motors and tune the engine to put out more power. 210 hp 190 lbft torque 2.5L I-4 paired with 90hp 120 lbft torque electric motor using a properly tuned 8 speed auto. Total 300hp and 310 lbft torque. 0-60 in 5-6 sec range. MPG from 1st example is probably 26 mpg combined and MPG from 2nd example is probably 30mpg combined.

Thanks for your reviews. I have the LE model from 2017. The V6 has good power even for towing, but it does not handle curbs as I desire. I also added sound deadening to help reduce road, wind, and rain noise. I still get wind noise and a bit of road noise, but I turn the music on to have different noise.
I am developing a desire for the Direct 4 and VDIM with Dynamic Rear Steering developments. My real taste is for Lexus. I will get a Lexus next time I change automobiles.

I own a 2020 Highlander Limited with the V6. I love that engine. It's quiet, it purrs, and gas mileage is great on the open highway where I have achieved 29 MPG. In town, with things in Economy so I don't heavy use the accelerator, I can get 17-18 MPG in the City. I'm pretty sure the 4 banger will do a little better in the City, but based on the highway numbers, I'm glad I have the V6. The first thing I noticed when I purchased it was it's quiet. I'm sure the Turbo 4 will be noisier, but probably not obnoxious. If something dreadful were to happen with my current Highlander, I would have to still consider an identical Highlander or if I really wanted a V6, I would look at either a top trimmed Nissan Pathfinder or go with the Infinity Version. Honda Pilot is ugly, and having owned one before the Highlander, I prefer the quiet and softer ride. Curious to see the Lexus version of the Grand Highlander ends up being.

    BLACK FENDER THINGS (opinion):
Idk if a paint matching color would hold up to the abuse coming from the road?
I believe a color maturing the paint would look better on a new vehicle. My only worry is that they would end up looking prematurely old (making the car look old) because of the constant abuse dust & pebbles from the road.
Do they have these things in matching colors on other vehicles to know how a color would hold up?
If the existing black would hold up better to the constant stuff coming from the road, I’d rather have the black.

I wouldn't have a problem with Toyota slamming turbo-fours into everything, IF they offered turbo-six performance models, to balance out their lineup. The trucks lose all V8 power, for hybrid sixes, and the cars lose all V6 powertrains for hybrids. That's not enough, for me, but for the average Joe, that might be the right play. As the Taco and 4Runner get 4-cylinders, I'll enter the used Toyota market
