- In a gas turbine, the job of compressor is to adiabatically compress the air before going inside the combustion chamber. Intercooling is a process in which the efficiency of compressor is enhanced by compressing the gas with the help of two compressors keeping an intercooler in between. The intercooling improves the efficiency of compressor however it reduces the thermal efficiency of gas turbine, In this lecture you will learn the following points
1) What is intercooling in gas turbine
2) How intercooling enhances the efficiency of compression
3) Why intercooling alone cannot improve the thermal efficiency of cycle i.e., it must be accompanied with regeneration.

but when dealing with thermal efficiency which is simply the difference between the turbine work and compressor work . so in this case the the net work has increased because the compressor work has decreased which means an increase in the thermal efficiency of the GT. could you please clarify this point ? thanks.
compressor work is reduced on the expense of heat lost by intercooler so combustion chamber has to compensate that, profit loss becomes equals.. In totality eff. reduces

I think this inter cooler is more useful in aeroplane engines as they need both high pressure and high temperature to boost the plane.
