The cake was originally called grön tårta (green cake), but was given the name prinsesstårta or "princess cake" because the three Swedish princesses and daughters of Prince Carl, Duke of Västergötland (1861-1951) were said to have been especially fond of the cake. The original recipe first appeared in the 1948 _Prinsessornas Kokbok_ cookbook, which was published by Jenny Åkerström, a Swedish home economics guru at the beginning of the 20th century and an instructor to Princess Margaretha (1899-1977; later Princess of Denmark), Princess Märtha (1901-1954; later Crown Princess of Norway), and Princess Astrid (1905-1935; later Queen of the Belgians). These three sisters are granddaughters of Oscar II of Sweden (1829-1907) and first cousins twice removed of the current monarch of Sweden, King Carl XVI Gustaf.
i didn't even begin watch these videos because i wanted to bake something. i watched them because everything is so aesthetic and clear and pretty and now i know how to make a bunch of the cutest desserts i've ever seen
Guys, Im from Brazil and Ive never seen so many weird comments about a video of cake!!! Gosh, this is food!!! If u dont like any sweet food, so why are u here? But if u like it anyway, just enjoy!!!! Its not Masterchef!!! Hahaha In love with this cake.
Everyone else is right, just enjoy the process and let your creativity shine. I appreciate that you took time to make the traditional version of the cake. But I thoroughly enjoyed watching the other cakes you made too. They were beautiful and delicious looking cakes, which made me really really crave cake in the middle of the night.
Manuela Kjeilen My favorite part is always the cutting of the cake in the end. 😋 By the way, is the recipe for the Swedish princess cake included in your book?
i am from india, this winter i visited sweden. and OMG!! this cake is the best cake , i could cry upon this. i can never forget its taste. that was sooooooooooooooooo yummmm!!!
You totally nailed it! THANK YOU for putting regular whipped cream like it’s supposed to be and not some kind of icing or sweet cream like others do. And bless you for putting marzipan as well, and not SUGAR PASTE which some idiots do. Sorry for my rage but as a true swede I have my standards on princess cake. xD
It was soooo beautiful that when you cut the cake I just thought 'NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!'! I could never make this cake! Way too many things that can go wrong. I'd be stressed from beginning to end and would likely end up with a green pancake and a pink nipple on top...
Highly recommend trying to make Princesstårta though, it's a pretty forgiving cake. The only hard part for me is tucking the marzipan, everybody says it looks so good and all I see is the one small dent that's barley visible staring back at me
I have made this cake multiple times, and I have never seen it made with the a third cake layer on top of the whipped cream! I always just put the marzipan right on top of the whipped cream. Thanks for the new idea! I will definitely give it a try. 😁
I see people saying they "don't see a difference" comparing this to the other one, but there is. I myself don't support hate comments in any way and I think people were very harsh on her other video(since she's allowed to have whatever creative flow that she wants) but in constructive criticism manner I have to agree with that in her other video she didn't really do "swedish princess cakes". She did very delicious cakes, no doubt about it but they were not "princess cakes". It's the combination inside the cake that make it have it's name, otherwise it's just a cake with marzipan on top of it. That's the difference.
I have had the Swedish Prinsesstårta, and that along with the Cassata Siciliana (an Italian cake) are my favorite cakes in the world! Yours is absolutely beautiful! Love your videos, so peaceful, soothing, lovely background music, and of course, flat out the best looking (and I am sure tasting) desserts! Even if someone doesn't want to make what you make, your videos are amazing for de-stressing and calming down!
I thought the last Swedish cake video was beautiful! This one is too! I especially loved the blue lace cake with the pink bow on it 💙💙 That was my FAVORITE!! I've been baking for 16 years and have NEVER worked with Marzipan, so this will be new for me! Thank you for the tutorial 💙💙💙
I love it!!!!! It's so incredible, my grandpa is Swedish too!!! When you added so much pastry cream and whipped cream, I was like... that's gonna be super sweet! I really love it! But sadly, 😔 now I'm hungry 😋 Maybe I eat that?Just Kidding, but I would really like a big piece of it! Never stop making these incredible videos about you making the cake!
This is the most delish cake in the world x thanks for the recipe and for the memories of eating this gorgeous cake. It really is so elegant and light.
This is both beautiful and oh so delicious looking, sadly I'm waiting for the "you did it wrong I'm a Swede" rants that are sure to come. I really really want to dig in and pig out on this cake!
Baileygirl Smith actually, it was pretty spot on. If I would have a complaint it's that the sponges are way too thick, but that's more a matter of taste. All the correct ingredients and layers are there, so I think she did a great job! :) / A swede
Agreed, this is accurate and spot on! I have ZERO complaints whatsoever. Looks GORGEOUS, Manuela. Well done! P.s. For less misunderstandings - just rename the title of the other one to avoid the misunderstandings! Just add "inspired" somewhere. (This has nothing to do with being butthurt, at least not for me. I'm just saying if a famous baker was told to make some fancy, wellknown cake but made something else and still called it that - well.. I think chefs and bakers wouldn't approve, unfortunately. That also means you've failed the task. But ANYWAY! I voiced my opinions in the other one (and quite less rude than another Swede there). No one has to behave badly just to give your opinion or share information. There were lots of Swedes that were kind enough to share facts, and those were both correct and respectful. :) But I'm SO happy to see THIS one! :D And you also got me craving one. Bad! ;) Again - well done. :) /another Swede - now craving cake.
No complaints from this swede this time, as now our national dish is correctly presented. the other cake was very nice but not a prinsesstårta... like I would take swedish herring and say it's japanese sushi.
I'm a Swede (well, an immigrant who got Swedish citizenship) and my only complaint is that this cake looks really tasty but I'm on a diet so I can't eat one.
My question is: how on earth will a whipped cream dome hold its shape when you press a sponge cake on it? When I make whipped cream, I just have to look at it sternly and it falls apart
My first taste of a Swedish princess cake was in San Francisco’s Fillmore St 13 years ago. Hope the shop is still there. So well done, my friends had seconds. Then I discovered the box version from Ikea. Must say I was impressed. Thank you. Had no idea he dome shape takes skill.
Such absolutely pretty lil cakes!!! I watch your videos over and over haha! :) Going to make the swedish princess cakes for my granddaughters bday! Princess cakes for my lil princess! THANK YOU so much for the tutorials!!! I LOVE THEM!
Natalia Marquetti Wow...some ppl are way too nit picky about content creators these days. I liked it either way no matter the label. I wouldn't have known or cared about the difference other than it tasting good and learning how to make it. 😉
Lol. I always always always look in the description while, before or after watching a video. I think it's sort of expected, without having to say it, for the viewer to look in the description. Then again idk. Maybe some people need hand holding.
I have been watching your videos for a solid hour and am just mesmerized by your beautiful, delicious creations. What a true gift you have. Thank you for sharing it with those of us who might be brave enough to attempt one of these delicacies. 😂 You've got a new subscriber in me. Warm Regards. 💕
Looks lovely .. Made it once a long time ago and it wasn't easy! Should just mention though that the topmost layer beneath the marzipan should be cream rather than another layer of cake... Traditionally that is..
I see no difference except this one is bigger...I can't believe people actually slammed her for the mini cakes. I prefer the mini cakes anyway this is huge and would sadly go to waste in my family.
Treia Saint Yeah, only "poc" people's silly complaints matter on the internet. European people wanting accurate representation of their is such bullshit! :) /s Seriously though, let people defend their cake culture. 😂
people can defend their cake culture but some of the comments are downright awful. I defend my culture too, but im not going to be an asshole about it.
😍😍 it's so beautiful and elegant. You are 👍👍👍 This is my favorite cake of all... eaten it once, look exactly the same... give me a slice .. no...no... the whole cake please 😋😋😋😋 Thank you for sharing👏
This cake appears in the UK British Bake Off book and Im going to have a go, not sure I'll come close to Manuela's . Very skilful, helpful and charming video. R

Beautiful work! Gonna have to try this one day. Or probably two (god knows I'd rush assembling if I just spent 3hrs making the cakes and fillings haha).
I just made one of these for my birthday. They are my favourite. How do you get your marzipan to be so pliable? Mine always cracks and feels too grainy.
This looks so amazing! Would it be completely untraditional if I used beautifully cut and whole berries to decorate the outside instead of fondant or marzipan?
Thank you for showing the wonderful world of your cakes... I would just like to ask, when you say marzipan do you mean fondant icing? The marzipan in the uk is not as smooth as yours. 🍥
That looks simply beautiful love love love it 😙 😙 😙 😙 😙 😙 if you don't mind me asking you can you please make a video on how to marzipan would love to try it out.
I made this cake and I have to say, it's delicious. However, this recipe cannot survive my climate. I live in Malaysia and it's crazy hot right now. Every component; the pastry cream, the whipping cream, the marzipan melted too easily though I followed your guidelines to make sure they are absolutely cold beforehand. When I tried to assemble everything it became so runny that everything became a total mess. Well, it didn't become the pretty cake that I envision but it's fine. I'm not going to serve this to anyone else.😁
I have a few questions. I want to make marzipan and what can I use instead of egg white to make it ? How many kg marzipan do you use for this cake? How long can I keep marzipan in refrigerator? Thanks
My favourite thing to eat when I visit Sweden, thank you!!!! I hate negativity, But honestly your long sleeve districted me from enjoy watching the video :(

Whoever decides to hate on her even though she clearly stated the name of the cake, just go away. I love this cake!
thank you Tarantula

yes it is, both this one and the mini once
The most elegant cake ive ever seen
Inna Kanki well, it IS a Princess cake
i am from india, this winter i visited sweden. and OMG!! this cake is the best cake , i could cry upon this. i can never forget its taste. that was sooooooooooooooooo yummmm!!!
I gave this video a like because you said my hands are beautiful... thanks, yours are too!
You totally nailed it! THANK YOU for putting regular whipped cream like it’s supposed to be and not some kind of icing or sweet cream like others do.
And bless you for putting marzipan as well, and not SUGAR PASTE which some idiots do.
Sorry for my rage but as a true swede I have my standards on princess cake. xD
you are incredible, loved both videos on this cake. dont let trolls in the comment section limit your creativity.
thank you so much
I loved both videos as well, keep doing your thing
Thank you so much
Joscelyn Goelst someone's criticizing her? Why?
Katetanic she did another version of this cake and everyone was mad 'cause it wasn't the traditional recipe of it
your whipped cream dome making skills are some of the finest in the galaxy. jag är imponerad.
Baking is fun and so relaxing, i do fails many time, but i just re-do cakes until i get it right! you learn while you do!
S Sullivan lol u speak for all of us
S Sullivan haha love that
Pink nipple😂

Elli plays roblox Fannah
It's usually not that sweet because in sweden we don't put sugar in our cream when whipping it. 😉
This is the most delish cake in the world x thanks for the recipe and for the memories of eating this gorgeous cake. It really is so elegant and light.

I’m using this video to make my first classic Swedish princess cake for Christmas time You did a brilliant job of this. tack så mycket
I really love how elegant and beautiful this prinsesse tårta is.
I admire your work.
My question is: how on earth will a whipped cream dome hold its shape when you press a sponge cake on it? When I make whipped cream, I just have to look at it sternly and it falls apart
Tudy Cookings You could try freezing it for a short period of time so it keeps its shape before putting the cake on top.
Tulle Rules thanks, that is a good idea ☺️
Tudy Cookings Add a stabilizer. Like cream of tartar, instant vanilla pudding, or unflavored gelatin.
Tudy Cookings ... whip to stiff peaks and put in the fridge for at least 30 mins.
Appaddict01 Or mascarpone cheese. (Edit: I use BelGioioso brand.)
I especially like watching your delicious baking video's, because there are NO CALORIES, but they are fully satiating!
I think this and your White Prinsesstårta video are the best prinsesstårta videos I've ever seen
You are amazing. You don't even use a cake turner or drop any jam! . You're do delicate and do beautiful work. Yum yum yum.
My first taste of a Swedish princess cake was in San Francisco’s Fillmore St 13 years ago. Hope the shop is still there. So well done, my friends had seconds. Then I discovered the box version from Ikea. Must say I was impressed. Thank you. Had no idea he dome shape takes skill.
the deco is cool ! I also liked the one with heaps of strawberries on top . Well done .
I’m from Sweden and I have never seen that you put a layer of cake after the whipped cream but the cakes looks very yummy
Det är faktiskt så man gör :)
Så fin! Gör prinsesstårta varje år till min mans födelsedag då det är hans favorit 😍
takk Sofia

There, people. She made a classic swedish princess cake. Are you gonna stop bothering her in the comments?
Natalia Marquetti Wow...some ppl are way too nit picky about content creators these days. I liked it either way no matter the label. I wouldn't have known or cared about the difference other than it tasting good and learning how to make it. 😉
wynja77 stfu
She actually does say it in her description, so your argument is not valid nor wanted
wynja77 I don't think it was in "the" description, but she said somewhere that it was her take on it
Coffee Cup agreed!
Your videos are always relaxing to watch, so delicious with such nice music in the background.
Just as amazing as the last video! We shall be making this for a very special Swede very soon!
It's the cake of my dreams... I love this channel ❤ takk Manuela for a ton of inspiration

Lol. I always always always look in the description while, before or after watching a video. I think it's sort of expected, without having to say it, for the viewer to look in the description. Then again idk. Maybe some people need hand holding.
"adhere the marzipan to the shape with your beautiful hands" was my favorite part 😂
I have been watching your videos for a solid hour and am just mesmerized by your beautiful, delicious creations. What a true gift you have. Thank you for sharing it with those of us who might be brave enough to attempt one of these delicacies. 😂 You've got a new subscriber in me. Warm Regards. 💕

Lovely! Princess Cake is on my bucket list to try.
You are just awesome 👌Beautiful n yummy cakes 😊.. Can we skip adding egg for marzipan?
This looks so amazing! Would it be completely untraditional if I used beautifully cut and whole berries to decorate the outside instead of fondant or marzipan?

Gosh, it seems so easy when you do that!

I love these and the previous cakes of yours
Hi, excuse me, I'd like to know what are the two types of frostings you put on top of the cake. Mind sharing them please? Greetings from Mexico!
Read the recipe it is linked above!
Manuela Kjeilen Thank you, I'll look it up, I really love your cakes! By the way, my son Is writing for me, I really don't know much English

Manuela Kjeilen 😉
Manuela Kjeilen that sounds like a very interesting way to learn a language. Very clever.
