  • As we were looking for land around the Finger Lakes, we fell in love with a property that was near to Littletree Orchards, which is a U-Pick orchard that also sells to local markets, including Greenstar Co-op and the Ithaca Farmers Market. Started in the mid-1970s, Littletree is one of those destinations you have to experience for yourself. Their U-Pick typically opens in the late summer through fall.

    I really enjoyed this video. Apple orchards hold fond memories for me of my grandfather's orchard on the farm. He had done his own grafts so one tree would have two or three varieties of apples. To pick I would tuck my shirt into my pants and then drop the apples down the inside of my shirt. It was also my job to pick the fallen apples to make cider. We'd rent a press for the day and our apple cider was always so delicious.
    Thanks for taking me back for a trip in time. I'm a macintosh lover and I just purchased a macintosh apple tree.

    this reminds me of the really old apple tree just barely in the adjacent forest, it smells amazing in bloom. it's so old that it's sprouted from the ground several times, each reaching a dozen feet in the air at least. i'd love to one day encourage it to fruit to see what it tastes like

    Loved this video, a lot of useful information. I have several apple trees that we haven’t been taking care of very well, I guess you could say they’re extremely organic in nature☹️. Many people want organic produce but they also don’t understand that they’re not going to be getting a picture prefect product. I have a hard time with the timing of getting the trees sprayed, because it either extremely windy or raining. The wind is the biggest factor for us I guess. Now that the blossoms are gone I can spray if I can get out there on a windless day. The damage is probably already done, but I might be able to keep a few insects from feasting on the fruit.Thank you Ms. Summer💚🙃

    • @barbll000
      @barbll000 3 роки тому

      A beekeeping friend said that the best way to keep the bees off the clover in the grass under the apple trees at spraying time is to cut the grass first so the flower heads are removed from the clover.

  • @limenzest
    @limenzest Рік тому

    I love the dude at the end talking frankly about "organic" vs "synthetic" treatments. Most organic sprays on the market are more wishful thinking than actually doing something. Some are functional, but not as a market farmer because your inputs cost more than the product your selling. The ecological impact of small scale spraying is less than negligeable when done properly as he was saying.

    Just wondering If there is any possibility that you might be able to do a similar video in a peach orchard? I’m particularly interested in how to stop stone crop bores from killing my stone fruit trees. I’ve tried to grow peaches, and cherries unsuccessfully for a very long time. I’ve lost quite a few trees to the stone crop bores and I’m determined to successfully grow the new peach tree that I’ve planted.If I can succeed in keeping that one peach tree alive I would love to plant more and possibly some cherry trees.I live about twenty miles from some beautiful peach orchards but wouldn’t it be nice to be able to walk outside and pick a ripe peach off of the tree when it’s at its peak? I remember one year visiting my favorite orchard picking a peach off of the tree and eating it with its juice poring out of it as I took a bite. Oh was that delicious. Unfortunately the orchard is now a community of houses and I never was able to find out the variety of that peach. The owners wife passed away, and so did the orchard and I’m sure I’ll never know the name of that wonderful, beautiful peach. ( in my youth I assumed that the orchard would be there forever and I could eventually find out the name of the peach) I’m sure she told me at the time but I again assumed that since I had forgotten it, it would always be there for me to pick from.☹️💚🙃

    The mealy mushy ones I would image are good for making apple butter and
    ciders but when it comes to a fresh apple, consistency and texture dominates the
    pallet for me. Of the crisp apples I really have to try the rome beauty, the gobstopper of apples! The complexity of the favor profile is probably at its height when ripe but I do not like too sweet. I am partial to a tart apple. I am interested in trying the astringent apples.

    • @emalinel
      @emalinel 3 роки тому

      I think it was during their property hunting. This might have been adjacent to a property they wanted but there were some difficulties in purchasing it (whether there was a conservation easement, or there was another buyer that placed their bid first, etc.). Either way I doubt it was the fault of how they got along with Dennis and Anna, just the state of how fast-paced the real estate market is now

      Hi Maria, yep Emaline is correct (Emailine, you clearly watched our other videos!). We really liked a property nearby Dennis and Anna, but it was under a very strict conservation easement and we wouldn't have been able to do much with the land (e.g., cut any wood, do permaculture, or build anything that couldn't be disassembled). See video reference here if you're curious: ua-cam.com/video/3me5d-jw_c0/v-deo.html
