My son and I followed your video step by step and encountered the same problem you did with getting the old drain pump off the spindle. The plastic was fused onto the metal with rust and friction. We had to tear and cut the old plastic pump apart and cut and scrape the plastic off the spindle. Took an hour. Then sanded off the spindle with metal sandpaper. Everything else was pretty straightforward. Now the machine is fixed and works beautifully with no leak. We're so grateful to you for posting this video.
I am also a senior lady~~ of 74--I tackled this job and the only difficulty was removing the old pump. After soaking for a day I went back at it. Beat, pried , jiggled and finally off it came!! Whew! Of course the shaft was rusty--so I cleaned it and sanded and added a little petroleum jelly to ease the new one on. I held my breath when turning on the water~~ but so far all is good! Saved me a visit from a repairman. This is an older Kenmore and as long as it keeps going I am happy!!
Just fixed mine today! Thought I was going to have to take all the screws off the back but this video saved me the headache :) Took about 20 minutes to change out the pump. I spent another hour just cleaning all the filth in between the drums. Thanks for the video!!!
This was right on the money (and saved us a bunch of it). Your camera work was better than the great majority of UA-cam videos out there. Thank you so much!
@@SmartEasyDIYer me too. Ordered the part off Amazon and it's arriving tomorrow. It's like they all ready have this part in stock becuase it's the first thing people order 😂
@@SmartEasyDIYer update: this wasn't the problem. But I found another video that helped me on how to jump the machine so that I can remove the the outer shell and start the washer to find where the leak is coming from. Wish me luck. ua-cam.com/video/RgoKHeJXCb8/v-deo.html
Thank you so much! This was super helpful. I have now repaired both my dryer and washer that are over 25 years old for less than $60! I really appreciate you taking the time to post this. I couldn't have done it without you! My husband is thrilled.
Hey, so I do have a question. The bottom front is a bit higher than the back so the unit is tilted slightly back. I never noticed it before but its possible it was always like this. I took it apart again and tried to hook the lip underneath the frame in front, but it just wont go together unless I rest it on top of the frame. Does this make any sense?

Thank U so much this video. I actually ordered the pump and after I opened it, found out it was actually the hose coming from the pump that was leaking. I still wouldn't have been able to open it and repair had it not been for this great Video. U saved me money and time. Thank U so much for this video.. 👍👍
Ditto what Ruby said! My husband hates working on household appliances (Tractors, combines, etc. are his thing!) The thought of shelling out $$$ to a repairman so close to Christmas was really disheartening. Your video showed me I've got this! Thank you!!
I couldn't figure out how to disassemble my washer so I started looking up videos. You showed me exactly what needed to be done. AND my leak happened to be coming from the water pump as well. Very helpful video. Thanks!
This was great! I am not an experienced person repairing things at home and this was completely helpful. I had fun fixing my machine! Thanks for taking the time to share this with the rest of us!
Thank you soo freakin much! We were doing our laundry at the laundry mat for six months before I stumbled on to this video. $13 and 30 minutes later and our wash machine works perfectly. Thank you again!
This video helped tremendously. I am a 40+ female who is mechanically inclined and prefers to be self-reliant (appliance issues tend to happen at the least convenient moment, right?). I was able to disassemble my washing machine, clean it inside and out and complete the needed repairs easily after watching this video. I really appreciate your thorough instruction. Thank you for providing such useful content! Note to other gals out there: I am 5' 4" and my washer is in a tight space so very little room in which to work. All it takes is common sense, a couple of basic tools and patience to make this repair so if you're wondering if you can do this, you can! :)
+Jen G Wow awesome good for you!!! I'm so proud of you! Great job!! Looking back I wish I would've done a better job on the video but it was one of my first so Ive learned a lot since then too. :)
One of your first videos? You did an excellent job explaining and performing the repair in real time so good for you! I think you did a fine job making this video. I see from the other comments below that I am not the only gal who tackled this repair with your helpful instruction, too. Nice work! Thanks again!

It was my washer pump for sure, had a small crack in it and water was squirting out like crazy. Your step by step instructions was perfect. Thank you. I am now an official rock star appliance lady :) thanks so much to your video! last week i replaced my heating element on dryer ~ thanks to UA-cam help! in the meantime My washer had been leaking only a little bit for this last month, then today ~ there was a mighty creek flowing out of the garage coming from under the front of the washer! I cant say enough how helpful your video is! Thank you thank you thank you ~ happy Saturday & Happy Easter!
Worked as described. The only way to remove the old pump was to destroy it and it was near impossible to remove even then. Thanks for the walk through.
I just did this, it worked! The crazy part, I found one of my kid’s sock inside the pump!! I used needlenose pliers to pull it out (in shreds), unbelievable, I fixed it!!
Good video, please retitle: "How to change water pump on Kenmore 80 Series DIY" since this is the only issue that the video addresses and will not fix all leaks on the model.
Wow! This was so helpful, I really appreciate it! After watching your video, it was simple to take off the housing and discover that I needed to replace the same piece. I ordered it and will have a non-leaking washing machine in just a few days because of you! Thanks!
I guess this would be the same way to take a part of the 90 series. Mine just started leaking. Very good step by step. Now I got to order a washer pump.
Thank you friend for the excellent video. Just had a major leak with my Kenmore washer. I'm not as fortunate to have a drain in my upstairs area where my washer/dryer combo is located. These water leaks always ruin my upstairs ceiling whether it be a leaky washer, faulty toilet inlet hose, or a breach in the shower line behind the walls, there is always water damage even possible mold if not corrected. A ball shut-off valve at the side of the house at the main water entrance is always good to have and to use whenever leaving the house for even a day. Thanks again friend.
Thank You Paul!!! Awesome... You walked me right through it... I just ordered the part on Amazon... But... I J.B. Welded the broken pump... It works perfect!!! Everything I own is J.B. Welded!!! I love that stuff!!! My guitars, my guns, my truck now even my washing machine... Awesome!!! Thanx Again!!!
thanx for heads up, just knowing how to disassemble and diagnose a small leak has saved me at least a hundred bux (more than likely old lady would just run out and buy another new machine with no parts avail, lol).
Thanks for putting together this video. Most appliances are pretty easy to work on if you know what you're doing (ie where the fasteners are, what clips to undo). I interned at GE's washing machine plant doing quality assurance and tore apart a few hundred of those machines, unfortunately they are totally different than these Kenmore machines. anyhow, this video saved me a bunch of time and money.
Thank you thank you thank you so much you saved us alot of money and my husband was really impressed that i fixed it all by myself well without his help thank you again
Nice job, very helpful. One note, when you put the screws/clips back in (last step of assembly, at about 12:30) on the back of the washer, you didn't tuck the metal 'ears' on the inside of the plastic, there's a place to do that, they were outside, so the metal just past the screws bent out when you tightened them. But the video was very helpful, thanks.
Thank you for this awesome video. This is exactly what is happening with my Kenmore Series 80 washer! Now I will order the part and get to it. My wife will think I am a hero! lol...
Very good video. I would just like to suggest that a zip tie be placed around the discharge hose to the hot and cold water hoses. This prevents the discharge hose from backing out during the pumping out of the water during cycles. My motto, if it can happen it will.
Thumbs up for showing how the plastic pivot latches went in. Those were a head scratcher for a while. (tabs go behind the control panel frame so they don't get bent)
You're making a little tough on yourself. The two plastic pieces you take off first are the hinges for the top. You just need to pop off the end caps, remove the two screws underneath, and the control panel will flip back without hanging it by the wires. There's no need to pull the machine away from the wall.
I would have never thought they came apart like that! THANKS SO MUCH! How did you determine it was the pump? TIP MAYBE: It looks like the machine could be run with the housing off? That was be awesome way to see where the leak is coming from. (I'm going to try it on mine - things never seem to go the way they should when I'm facing a repair, LOL) Again, THANKS SO MUCH for the video. Getting the housing off is a puzzle few could solve.
Thank you so much for this video clips which help me to replace the Washer internal drain hose. It cost me only $15 for the hose @ Sears. :) Great instruction video.
How could you tell that it was the internal drain hose? My 80 series is leaking & I've already replaced the pump; it continues to leak water (a lot) that runs down the back internal post.
Great video. Mine is 21 years old. I see a very small amount of water in the center on the floor. Price of pump? Expensive? Or time for a new one machine? No chance of the tub seal? Thank you.
The front box may not simply slide off. Mine was screwed to the frame on the bottom rail about 1/4” off the floor. I suggest checking that FIRST before starting to unscrew the top area. Otherwise, you won’t be able to tip the machine back to access those bottom frame screws. 1:25 Why did you take the hinges off to flip the top back? Isn’t that what hinges are for? Then you just had to put them back in (backwards too it seems) and they never served their purpose. 12:30
Why the apologies? Please take instead a huge thank you from me instead! I've repaired a few items around my home but thought this was beyond my ability. With your help I was wrong. Note to Dads: teach your daughters this stuff. Where would we be w/o UA-cam and helpful people like you. God bless.
Thanks a lot for this video. It was the water pump (ebay $12.58) . Everything was easy to perform, except I did have some trouble with replacing the outer shell back. Nonetheless, you saved me $$$.....
Great video!. It helped me take apart my washer to replace the water valves. I have a sears washer and it was very easy to order the exact replacement part from Sears at a reasonable price. Thanks
Hello. Where exactly was your leak in the front? We have a leak on the top front between the top strip that’s about an inch tall and the bottom large part. Wondering if it’s the same problem or different. Thank you!
I don't take the washer apart, I just pull the washer three foot to the front and lie it to the back , put a towel and small bucket , and remove the old pump with a small chanel locks and put the new one, 15 minutes fix. I work in an apts complex, you make a lit bit complicated.
Thanks so much for helping me, a single mother, avoid incurring unnecessary costs! :) Some repair shops like to send us women down the river with the charges!
Hello, the shaft that holds on the water pump is really rusty and I’m having a problem removing the old water pump. Any suggestions on how to remove the old water pump? Thank you for the video
You’re welcome. Mine was very rusty too but it mostly just crumbled off I think. I had to use a vise grip pliers to just break the last bit of I think. Then I sanded the shaft again to remove the rust so the new one went back on.
I had the same issue and am very happy to have come by this video. Problem is that my pump will not slide off the motor to be able to put on the new one. seems stuck or rusted right to it. You mentioned you had some issues getting yours off originally, any advice as to how to get it off without hurting the motor?
Yeah mine was really rusted on too. I think mine the plastic had kind of broken around the shaft. So I was able just to kind of cut/pry it off of there. I had to use sandpaper to get the rest sanded off then in order to get my new pump back on.
Everything went perfectly until it came time to "wiggle" the old pump off. I can't get the darn thing off! Looking around it seems that the pump can become very corroded and stuck, any tips for getting it off in that situation? I see other people removing the motor as well and smashing it off but I'm not quite ready to do that. Thank you so much for the clear, concise video on how to get the machine apart, that part worked like a charm!
+Sarah Parker Thank you glad it was helpful. When was very restaurant to I don't know any tips really maybe you could try where the shaft goes into The pump soaking it with WD-40 then see if you can wiggle it off after a while.
I have a different brand machine and its dripping water inside it I might try this and hopefully that will fix it. It's annoying to have to turn the water off every time the wash is done.
Question: Was yours like a small leak? Mine is pouring out almost as fast as it goes in, and it started doing it suddenly. Suddenly as in the wash before the gushing fine, then run for higher ground!
Thanks for this very helpful video! One question: Can it be the water pump if the machine is leaking on fill up?. My machine Has a moderate trickle from the front center right on fill up
Paul... How did you know if was pump? I can't tell where the water is leaking from. Is it safe to run if I've got the case down? Great video though! I was able to take apart my washer without any trouble.
Yes it's safe to run as long as your hoses are still on. You will need to plug your wires in again for things to work. You probably will need to run it so you can see whats going on. I was able to tell because it was leaking right in front where the pump is...
Oh yeah I took everything a part and I was running it and the water leaks from the middle on top like in the middle I think it's a washer but idk how to get to it cause ima have to disassemble so I can get wright to the middle lol
Great video, I replaced the pump and now cannot get the cabinet lined up. I think I'll sleep on it and hit it again tomorrow with a bigger hammer. Thanks
I think I have the same problem; I can't seem to get the cabinet lined back up where it belongs; my washer continues to leak even after I've replaced the pump. I'm wondering if it's because it doesn't look exactly lined up. Have you gotten it lined up right by now? How did you do it?
@@SmartEasyDIYer Ok awesome. Im trying to troubleshoot the leak but i cant find it. I got a GE top load washer and the bottom panel is wet. I turned on the washer and let it run but im not finding the leak. Should i just let the washer run its course all the way through?
Wait. So, what was leaking? The old pump? Or one of the hoses, or what? I realize you replaced the pump, but did you ever learn what was leaking/ Thanks.

No need to remove the screws from the back of the panel. They actually aid when tilting the control panel up and it rests more gently.

Very good video. I would just like to suggest that a zip tie be placed around the discharge hose to the hot and cold water hoses. This prevents the discharge hose from backing out during the pumping out of the water during cycles. My motto, if it can happen it will.
Yes sounds like a good idea. 😊 thanks for sharing.
Thanks for the great video , Ordered the part and my son and I fixed it as per your video . Thanks again!
Awesome great job!!
Video was well done, very helpful, replaced my pump without issue and no more leak!
Awesome I’m glad it helped! Thanks
Thumbs up for showing how the plastic pivot latches went in. Those were a head scratcher for a while. (tabs go behind the control panel frame so they don't get bent)
You’re welcome
Thank you! I even love the calming music. Great video!
Thanks I’m glad it was helpful. 👍👊
This was a very helpful video. I have a Kenmore 90 series and the procedure and layout was identical to this series 80. Thanks a bunch Paul W.
Hey you're welcome glad I could help.
northtrader n,
Dude, that was a phenomenal video! Very informative and easy to understand. Well done
Thanks I’m glad if it helped!!
Thank you so much for taking time to do this! Much appreciated!
+Elizabeth Nielsen You're welcome.
Thanks man! This video saved me a lot of time and money.
Awesome glad I could help!
very good close ups. thank you. this was very helpful
+Bob Bard Thanks glad it helped!
Thanks for this great video! Was able to get the job done same day and for $150 less.
+M MV Awesome I'm glad it helped save you money. Great job!!
You're making a little tough on yourself. The two plastic pieces you take off first are the hinges for the top. You just need to pop off the end caps, remove the two screws underneath, and the control panel will flip back without hanging it by the wires. There's no need to pull the machine away from the wall.
Thanks cliff.
Cliff, indeed, I started from the two end caps. Thanks!
Great video, everything went together like a champ!
Awesome I’m glad it worked for you!
excellent calm manner ...thanks
ape man.
Unbelievably helpful! I can't thank you enough.
+Thomas van Geel Awesome thank you!!
Great explanation. Very well documented, in a friendly manner. Thanks!
Thank you I appreciate it!
That’s real nice that you have a drain there!
It was super handy! Lol
Awesome job, exactly what I needed!! Thanks so much for taking the time and effort to do this and post it. Cheers!!
Awesome I’m glad it helped! Thanks 👍👊
just got the part today. 20 bucks. 15 minutes to install.....AWESOME!
Awesome good job!!
funny, I have a second one now to repair, and that pump is only 10 bucks...lol
+9toesracing Yeah good for you!
I would have never thought they came apart like that! THANKS SO MUCH!
How did you determine it was the pump?
TIP MAYBE: It looks like the machine could be run with the housing off? That was be awesome way to see where the leak is coming from. (I'm going to try it on mine - things never seem to go the way they should when I'm facing a repair, LOL)
Again, THANKS SO MUCH for the video. Getting the housing off is a puzzle few could solve.
You’re welcome I’m glad if it was helpful. My pump ended up being completely cracked and I could see it.
@@SmartEasyDIYer Thanks for the cracked info! (I still can't believe how the body comes off that washer (!) ) Thanks again.
Hello. I'll echo many of these statements. Thanks for posting this. Changed my water pump out this afternoon. Smooth sailing all the way :)
Hey great job! Glad it worked for you!
Thank you so much for this video clips which help me to replace the Washer internal drain hose. It cost me only $15 for the hose @ Sears. :)
Great instruction video.
Thanks I appreciate that. I'm glad it helped!
Thank you.
Thanks. I didn't see this till now.. Pumps are cheap for these. Not sure if yours is the same problem as mine.... Any update?
I never would have figured out how to get to the motor. haha Thanks for the video!
Awesom glad it helped.
The front box may not simply slide off. Mine was screwed to the frame on the bottom rail about 1/4” off the floor.
I suggest checking that FIRST before starting to unscrew the top area. Otherwise, you won’t be able to tip the machine back to access those bottom frame screws.

Why did you take the hinges off to flip the top back? Isn’t that what hinges are for?
Then you just had to put them back in (backwards too it seems) and they never served their purpose. 12:30
Great video. Explains a lot. Thank you 😊
Thanks 😊
Thank you for the video, saved me a lot if money.
Awesome great to hear!!
Why the apologies? Please take instead a huge thank you from me instead! I've repaired a few items around my home but thought this was beyond my ability. With your help I was wrong. Note to Dads: teach your daughters this stuff. Where would we be w/o UA-cam and helpful people like you. God bless.
Thanks so much I appreciate that a lot! Great job I’m proud of you!! Blessings
Excellent video. Thank you for taking the time to create this.
+Michael Smith You're welcome I'm glad it helped you!
Thanks a lot for this video. It was the water pump (ebay $12.58) . Everything was easy to perform, except I did have some trouble with replacing the outer shell back. Nonetheless, you saved me $$$.....
+MARTIN JAQUEZ HIGNOJOZ Awesome glad to know it helped!
Great video!. It helped me take apart my washer to replace the water valves. I have a sears washer and it was very easy to order the exact replacement part from Sears at a reasonable price. Thanks
Mark Hilburger Thanks glad it helped you! Good job.
Thanks for the video. What condition what the pump in when you inspected?
You're welcome. My pump was in really bad shape when it started leaking.. It was rusted on to the shaft.. Pretty bad.
Hello. Where exactly was your leak in the front? We have a leak on the top front between the top strip that’s about an inch tall and the bottom large part. Wondering if it’s the same problem or different. Thank you!
You’re welcome. Mine was in the middle bottom front.
WELL EXPLAINED, THANK YOU SIR.
Awesome! Thanks
Does the problem ever come from the hoses themselves instead and, if so, what does that replacement look like? Thanks for a great video!
I've never had a leaking hose but if it was bad then it would be the same to take it apart to get done to the hose that's attached to the pump.
Thank you! This helped me a lot!
Awesome! Thanks
You saved us a washerful of money!
Thanks glad it helped!
I don't take the washer apart, I just pull the washer three foot to the front and lie it to the back , put a towel and small bucket , and remove the old pump with a small chanel locks and put the new one, 15 minutes fix. I work in an apts complex, you make a lit bit complicated.
Awesome thanks for sharing the tips 👍
Great help thank you so much for posting!!
jackson niemann You're welcome glad it helped you!
Excellent job
Thanks! Glad it helped.
Thanks so much for helping me, a single mother, avoid incurring unnecessary costs! :) Some repair shops like to send us women down the river with the charges!
Hey glad it helped you! Yeah I know how it is with repairs. Thanks.
Thanks for making this video. Saved me a bunch of time today. UA-cam University!
+Joe Hanly Awesome I'm glad! Yeah UA-cam is the best for that. :)
Man you save me alot of money thank you.
Awesome I’m so glad!! 👍👊
Smart Easy DIY I will try and break it off then. thanks for the video and your reply.
You’re welcome best of luck with it!!
I'll give it a try, thanks!
+Sarah Parker Best of luck!
I have a different brand machine and its dripping water inside it I might try this and hopefully that will fix it. It's annoying to have to turn the water off every time the wash is done.
Yeah it is annoying. I think they should be designed quite similar.
thanks you saved me time and money as well!!!! thanxs so much!!!!
SO glad I could help! Thanks for the feedback it means a lot! :)
Very Helpful Thank you for your time. Fixing it was easy. getting it apart was my problem...BobZee
Thanks. Glad you got it fixed!
Question: Was yours like a small leak? Mine is pouring out almost as fast as it goes in, and it started doing it suddenly. Suddenly as in the wash before the gushing fine, then run for higher ground!
Wow! Well mine leaked pretty fast too yes. Not as bad as yours I don't think. Sounds like yours might be a hose that broke.
You don't have to disassemble the top. You can access the pump by turning the washer on its back and access the pump from the bottom.
Great video, thanks for sharing!
+Michael Hamel Thanks.
Greattt video very helpful.... I changed everything by myself👍👍👍👍
+innocentchocolate Thank you awesome good for you great job!!
Thanks for this very helpful video! One question: Can it be the water pump if the machine is leaking on fill up?. My machine Has a moderate trickle from the front center right on fill up
You're welcome.. It sounds like it may be a hose or connection somewhere in your case..
Paul W
Thanks. I've ordered the pump, coupler, and plastic dogs for about $18 off amazon.
On the Series 80 washer, can you lift the top up and off instead of pulling the whole case forward and off?
Oh yeah I took everything a part and I was running it and the water leaks from the middle on top like in the middle I think it's a washer but idk how to get to it cause ima have to disassemble so I can get wright to the middle lol
Yeah good luck with it I hope you can figure it out ok..
Best on the internet
Thank you!
Great video, I replaced the pump and now cannot get the cabinet lined up. I think I'll sleep on it and hit it again tomorrow with a bigger hammer.
Thanks
Thanks and good job! I hope your bigger Hammer does the trick :)
I think I have the same problem; I can't seem to get the cabinet lined back up where it belongs; my washer continues to leak even after I've replaced the pump. I'm wondering if it's because it doesn't look exactly lined up.
Have you gotten it lined up right by now? How did you do it?
Can those red wires on the motor get wet? My washer was leaking so much water that they gotten wet a little.
I’m guessing they shouldn’t. Probably would hurt to use a hair dryer and dry them out somewhat if you can get to it.
Yes it was the actual pump that was leaking. It was so brittle the plastic broke around the end.
