I spent my 20’s trying to make a living and being creatively fulfilled as an advertising photographer. Fortunately I realised that the two were, for me, mutually exclusive, so I went into corporate life to earn a living and to be able to take extended holidays to do creative work. For 25 years I owned a graphic design agency that enabled a sufficient income to raise three children through independent schools and university, to take 6 week vacations to pursue photography and adventure, and now to retire and spend most of my time doing what I always loved, shooting images.
As Sean says, social media is a hydra monster. I share my photographs only with my family, friends and a few interested fellow creatives.

This was a perfect way to start my day. Two of my favorite photographers & UA-camrs talking about things that truly matter. Great job guys! And love those pics of Sean. "Authenticity" is how I'd describe him and the pics show that!

This interview is so good Tommy and I appreciate how transparent you both are. Comparison is such a slippery slope. Personally, I think that gratitude can be a powerful tool in combating the various slippery slopes we Creatives can find ourselves in. We have so so much to be thankful for and when we decide to shift our focus from comparison to gratitude, it is a real game changer!

Two awesomely motivational photographers talking in the same video and being honest and open about a subject which so many go through but don't really want to put it out there for the world to see for fear of tainting our own standing on these social media platforms, so refreshing and real to hear you guys speak like this, you guys rock!

I do enjoy this, and I’m grateful to have this platform, and also people like you... willing to share information with the world.

As you both say, creativity is the driving force, that's why we do what we do. I just want to say that I found Sean's channel back at the beginning of the year and I commented on one of his first videos saying that he resonated with me. You still do Sean, I love your material and I really believe that you will become a great speaker / advocate for photography. With your religious background you have a deep understanding of people and for me this shows in your videos. Thank you.

I believe that historically the creative person has always had to balance creativity and fulfillment with paying the bills. Call them "patrons," "art directors," or "clients," but meeting their needs only uses the technical and problem solving parts of the creative (mostly.) Almost all the creatives I know and have known are either doing exactly as you two or are teaching or (more rarely) as Sean says, "have won first prize." Many more of us feed our creative drives in our hobbies and work at other things to support our lives.

Very good discussion. Thanks you for having it and saying what you think about these kind of subjects.
"We all know it's the good stuff but we forget that in the pursuit of stupid things " :-) yep. Great !
Glad I found the channels of you both. Inspiring stuff, even for a more nature photography oriented guy. Love the discussions and deepness.

Great discussion! I think it’s also important to note that even if you reach the point where you’re getting paid for what you love to do, that could become normal and you might not get the same fulfillment as you did initially. For me, 99-100% of my creative fulfillment is completely detached from my financial fulfillment. It’s just the reality in which I’m in at this stage of my life. It’s tough to navigate at times.

Great video & very interesting ... especially how even pro-togs have to do the “daily grind” like most of us to be able to complete personal projects and be fulfilled as a creator.. great advice to about the confidence knocks most of us suffer from to 🙂

Great video Tommy I feel you guys pain.
I've been a photographer for many years now and a couple of years ago I had to diversify to survive.
Now I invest most of my profits into property which provides me with a passive income to allow me to photograph the things that I love.
It's a great position to be in to be choosy and not feel like you have to..but want to do the opportunities that are presented to you now.
