  • Some friends from church invited me along to do an overnight on the Appalachian Trail. The plan was to hike in 7 miles to a Lake just off the trail and do a bit of fishing for our dinner. Then, hike back down the Appalachian Trail to the car in the morning. Our starting point was up in Monson, Maine.

hi I am from Sweden and I have just started hiking / camping, one of the first proper things I bought was I cold steel shovel and I can honestly say that it is definitely not for hikers who are going far. but I usually walk for 5 to 6 hours and then I set up camp and stay in the same place for 4 to 8 days and in my case I save weight as I combine several tools in 1 I do not need to have an extra ax or knife with me as I can use the shovel for everything so for a hiker it is overkill but for a camper who wants a tool that you have several uses for it's really good. and a tip is if you want to save weight then unscrew the handle and only bring the shovel head as you can use the shovel to make a new handle on place but then you should have some form of screwdriver with you so you can fasten it properly I recommends some form of multi-pliers with a screwdriver in as there are examples that weigh around 100g + you can use the multi-tongs for so much more, so for that weight it is definitely worth taking with you to =)

As a hiker, I am always amazed at how even a short hike can whip your butt!! You never know what the will throw at you. Of course, being properly trail-ready always helps. The 100 Wilderness...no, have not hiked it yet, but other sections of the AT. Watching this makes me itch to get back on the trail. Waiting for cooler weather...I don't hike well in the summer heat. It sure is pretty there. Thanks so much. Watching every episode.

I just hiked to the Roman Nose Lakes here in Idaho. Beautiful hike & not too hard, but I think I am with you on the hiking adventures. I would rather just plunk myself in the woods & explore there.

Great video. I grew up just South of there and we camped/fished at multiple mtn ponds a little further North around Moosehead. Our hikes were 1/4 mile or less. ;-) Oh, most of the time you don't want to swim in those remote ponds. Typically they're full of leeches. LOL

Tip: dont boil the coffee. Bring the water to a boil and then take off heat and put the grounds in. Let sit a minute to strength and then do the cold water trick.

  • @iflanzy

Neat trick for your coffee but if you mix a whole egg with the egg shell in it, it will pull the grounds to the bottom when you boil it.

Great adventure! I enjoy a good hike albeit I'm sneaking up too quick for my liking on 60 and am overweight with a body riddled with arthritis some of the best adventures I've had were hiking in to remote locations with friends and enjoying a few days of primitive camping in the backwoods. Don't be to too quick to give up on a good hiking adventure it will allow you to get to, and experience places, you'd never be able to get to otherwise. ;-)

If you are reading this, remember that we are all born to run. Exhaustive hunting was the way of our tribe. Run easy and dont hurt yourself. Run light on the balls of your feet and try not to leave tracks. With enough practice it all becomes smooth and you run with an exhilarating smile. Easy, Light, Smooth ... run forever.

I know your pack is already heavy, but wouldn't it be cool if someone made a lightweight inner tube type float, you could paddle out and get to whatever water you wanted to. I've fished out of full on belly boats, it's popular for fly-fishing trout in the high Sierra, but they aren't really packable.

Thanks for another great vid. You use to own goats right? Just a suggestion to check out this guy that uses goats to help pack in and pack out stuff during his overnight camping hikes. This might help out with your 10 mile hike. Just search “firebox stove and goats” and you should see his vids... the goats just follow him and fend food for themselves
