Watched this one after your cost video. Love what you’re doing, love that these buses are finding new life. Just subbed.
Thanks you guys much for this video I’m about 2 months out from doing this to my bud and was unsure of how to go about making a template. This helps me out immensely!
I love the way you guys are building your own RV out of an old school bus that's awesome and you're doing a beautiful restoration very professional i can't wait to see it finish up. Thanks for sharing the video.
Thank you. We’re really enjoying this project and love sharing the progress.
I Love, Love, Love following skoolie builds, The creativity of some are Amazing! Yours will be in the top 5, I'm sure of it :)
Such kind words, thank you. We love watching build videos too.
Wow, you are such a lucky man to have your daughter to help you!!
Man you guys killed it! I have been watching every roof raise video I can find in preparation for my own bus build! This is the best raise I have seen! Good job!!!! Hope yuns get to enjoy for a long time!
Ya'll are awsome. stay the course
Thanks. We’re having a blast.
Just found you guys and your videos. You’re doing an amazing job with all your metal work and attention to detail. 👍🏼👍🏼
Thank you. We appreciate that you notice the details. Some call it a sickness but we call it fun.
I find this fascinating. The hard work is so impressive also.
We appreciate that. It’s definitely a labor of love.
Great job Team Artsy! Looks super clean, I can only hope mine will look this good. 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Thank you. Planning and patience were key to getting it right. Let us know if you have any questions. We’re happy to share our thoughts.
Loving your vids! I saw you welded the transition pieces instead of using rivets. I am trying to figure this out and your paper template really helped me figure out how we are going to do this.
Welding the top and bottom seam kept me from having to make compound bends. It was a little tricky because I could clean the metal well. It took a couple passes and I had to keep jumping around to avoid warping and burn through. But we’re really happy with the outcome.
Upon completion . . . create a family book where you can display your creation . . . for later review, and, reflection. Sorta like a family album. 🇺🇸
I never thought about doing it that far up however it does look easier to do the transition from that point
Thanks for the comment.
It wasn’t as difficult as I expected. I’m not gonna lie, I’m excited to try it again.
When I do my bus 🚌 I’m probably going to buy a couple sheets extra just so incase I make a mistake I will have extra metal to fall back on however i just might build a template and have a professional do it I’m not really scared to make the build it’s just the electrical is what im worried about myself I want mine to go off the grid but I still want it to be able to plug in to shore power if the occasion calls for it a bunch of over cast or rainy days
Having extra materials always comes in handy. We had the sheet metal shop shear the main pieces because it’s a cleaner cut, and cutting that much sheet metal is not a fun task. We had the shop cut the sheet metal for our smaller bus too. It’s worth a couple bucks to save the time and headache. We cut the transition pieces ourselves because we felt we would do a better job since we’re on site and I’m pretty good with a cut off wheel.
Our goal with electric is pretty consistent with yours. I’ve put the components in my shorter bus but I don’t have the batteries yet. Right now we are just using shore power.

What gauge sheet metal did you use? Awesome job, really looks great! :)
Awesome.... one of the most detailed videos thus far. What version of sikafelex did you use and is it strong?
Thank you. That’s a huge compliment.
We used Sikaflex 252. I learned about the product from another Skoolie builder. We did some experiments on scrap material. I can’t speak to it’s long-term strength but it’s performance convinced me to spend the extra money on this product. I’m definitely happy with it.
you killed it on that transition. what guage steel did you guys use? no oil canning at all.
Thank you. We used 18 ga everything but the center piece of the transition. That piece was 14 ga. We used the 14 ga for two reasons. 1) I came up short on material...so there’s that 2) as I was ordering more, we thought about the abuse the front could encounter. The sides get extra strength from the bend. Since the front was practically flat, we used a heavier gauge.
Oh, and it’s all my supplier had in stock. So reason #2 is just a way of rationalizing a miscalculation 😂😂😂😂
Love that you noticed the lack of oil canning. We’re super happy with the finish.
@@artsyreclaimed6821 oil canning is by far my biggest fear. ive been waffling all over the place on what sheet to go with. In my heart i wanted 18g but felt like maybe i was over doing it seeing so many recommend 20g.....but then i dont think people realize the factory stuff is all bead rolled on 2 edges which is what makes it stay flat. i dont plan to bead roll it so i figured 18 was the way.. Im glad you took the leap for me :D Im a metal guy by trade so the making it not fall apart aspect doesnt worry me at all. But the artsy aesthetic make it not look like a soup sandwich...yeah that has me fretting a bit. But i think thats what i like most about the skoolie community. Bunch of folks, nobody really knows what they are doing but are willing to become experts along the way. Something about the not knowing, but willing to fully commit and put sawzall to steel. lol. People are nuts, and i love it!
You’re gonna do great. We ran through some of the same thoughts you’re having. The 18 ga worked great. 20 ga seemed too flimsy to work with. 18 seemed like a good medium and I’m happy with our decision.
I also went with galvanneal for the corrosion resistance without sacrificing the ability to paint the surface.
@@artsyreclaimed6821 yeah i plan to run galvanized sheet, and cut it in with epoxy primer on the sheared edges before its hung. steel prices got me a little worried. i do a little cnc plasma art on the side and the prices of 10g have gone ballistic.
I’m afraid price increase aren’t stopping any time soon.
That's what I did- paper templates and ratchet straps
They work together well!
Would it have been possible to leave 1/4” of metal away from the roof hat Chanel of the stock bus roof you cut out so you’re not welding over the sealant so the weld lays down better?
this is am old video. how are those welds holding up? i would much rather weld mine like that vs rivet and bend it along those lines.
She looks more Eagle ish and way better then a Wonder loge. most do not a good looking transition when they raise the roof. Do you plain on loosing the 8 light system , it's not needed and it cleans up the body lines better to me.
Thanks for the feedback.
Yes, we plan to replace the 8 light system with something more streamlined. Definitely agree that it will clean up the body lines.
Hi what type of Metal sheet did y’all use, and where y’a located ?
We used 18 gauge galvanneal. We’re currently an hour north of Pittsburgh.
ugly welds but look like they will hold just fine. But the translon looks amazing.
hi guys, whats your build calendar/availablity like to do a roof raise for spring/summer 2021?
@micaupe I would be happy to explore this option with you. Message us through Facebook if you have that option. If not, we can swap emails to discuss further. FB is Artsy_reclaimed
Should have put glass in the middle.
